I have one darkhorse and it is for all 6 classes:  Covid 19.   How much of an impact will this have on the tournament?  We know there have been games and seasons cancelled because of it.  And it WILL affect ALL of the classes.  Week to week you just never know where it will show up.  So in this weird year, I am calling Covid, the darkhorse.

Congratulations.... u were able to turn a really good post / discussion into more meaningless covid ramblings.

I was going to start a thread on 2020 conference champions, perhaps needing an asterisk if conference by laws don't address such cases 🤔

I'll wait until Sunday and not distract on game day. Even state tournament champs at all rounds may need an asterisk given that some teams can't participate due to COVID-19 and related issues...

2020 in general is an *

If it is truly to protect the player from returning too early, why can't the IHSAA give Athletic Directors waivers for guardians to sign off on any liability?  There is nothing fair about a kid having to sit out 14 days because his sister had Covid, then add on another 6 days before he can compete when he has been heathy the whole time.

Exactly... or not even his sibling.  Just sat 5ft from the wrong person in study hall.

  4. The return to play rule requires 4 or 6 practices to be completed prior to return to play depending if U missed > than 5 or 10 straight practices.  The purpose is to protect players who have been INJURED or are SICK from returning too quickly.  Quarantine is neither.  All the IHSAA had to do was to allow virtual practices to count.  A player under 14 day Quarantine could attend 2 virtual practices with a coach or trainer while under quarantine and save games for players across the state.  Easy, sensible approach to our new environment.  Superintendents have reached out to IHSAA for leniency / virtual practices and we’re shot down. IHSAA got 90% of this season right... wish they would’ve hit a home run and addressed this gap by amending the rtp rule.

  5. Columbia City at Norwell - this is going to be a very tight game.  Norwell 21-20.

Dekalb at Leo - Leo 21-0.  This lack of offensive fire power may catch up to Leo in sectional.  Northridge and a rematch with EN?

East Noble at Bellmont - EN 35-0

New Haven at Huntington North - HN runs the ball 95% if the time and runs the same play 75% of the time.  NH 28-14

I'm less plugged in to LCC this season due to retiring from youth coaching after 18 seasons, but my daughter was telling me that a friend of hers from LCC was saying that the team is running short of normal numbers due to quarantining and also some of the starters are some of the ones quarantined.

I don't know if there's more testing going on via the schools or not, but I know that, in some cases, it's just folks reporting their own outcomes.  As an example, my son plays football for one of the local public schools and we just received a call from the school that he was exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID ... so he's now on quarantine.  I don't think the kid was tested by the school, but instead was tested on his own and reported results to the school who then used contact tracing to quarantine the others.  I'm not sure if some schools are actively involved in the testing ... for example, Purdue does random testing of students ... or if it's just plugged in families that are keeping the schools in the loop.

I agree that the two stints don't bode well, particularly from a small school situation.  There's a lot less opportunity for "next man up" and also a lot less opportunity for continuity as you are losing a chunk of line then another chunk of line or backs then another set of backs, etc.  Hard to get started and hard to get any traction.

Most schools are not doing testing.  They rely on family to communicate to school when a positive test occurs.  If it is a member of the football team then in most cases the team gets shut down 14 days.  If it was someone who sat within 6 ft of a football player at school then that player is quarantined 14 days.  A positive case in a school typically results in about 25 kids quarantined.  U only hear about the TEAMS that are shut down ... many teams are playing at less than full strength.... just like injuries in other years but much more prevalent.

  7. The mighty bluffton tiggers hung 70 on prairie heights Friday.  Offense set a bevy of records.  Amazing!  Full page spread in the local paper!   Seems there is no stopping this juggernaut. Eastside ... BEWARE as you must to travel to the tigger den.   Luers and Fairfield have deployed their scouts in anticipation of the inevitable showdown.

I'm liking Ohio's COVID tournament set up currently. They normally play 10 game regular seasons with playoffs that you have to qualify for and are seeded. This year they're playing 6 regular season games before the tournament that is all in if you opt to participate. It is still seeded like before, but after losing in the playoffs you can schedule up to 3 regular season games depending on when you lose in the playoffs to get the normal 10 games. I think this could really be beneficial for programs having tough years with young teams. More games those teams get at the end of the year, the better. Not necessarily would you have more games, still the same number, but most likely with teams in similar circumstances allowing teams to improve instead of getting throttled by 35+ to end their season.

In order for change to occur the pain associated with staying the same must exceed that associated with change.... don’t think we’re there yet
