Arguably, the battle for the “Best Team” (All Classes) in the North is between Chatard v Marian and Merrillville v. Westfield (assuming 6A is the direct measuring stick)  -  truth be told.

If Merrillville (whom Chatard made relatively short work of) somehow defeats Westfield (or somehow plays closer than they did against Chatard) then just who is the best team All Classes in the North?

If Marian beats Chatard in this scenario - which ABSOLUTELY could happen, then is Marian the best team in the North?

I consider the Marian/Chatard game to actually favor Marian.  Long drive, cold night, another away game for Chatard....2 years in a row.  Great Marian team.

I admit to using the transitive value but that is, ultimately, what analytics do X 100.

Agree that Chatard will be the best team MM has seen all year.  Mishawaka game 1 is really the only other team worth mentioning.  Seen Penn on film... nope.

But honestly Concordia isn’t a great team but hung with Chatard.

Chatard 24-21.  Boys from the south will have a good shot at LOS

Most of my career on the field was spent at the Referee position, so I spent an awful lot of time on intentional grounding. “Intentional” means exactly that. You have to give high school QBs a lot of leeway when you’re making a judgment based on the absence of a receiver in the area. They really make some awful throws, especially when contacted, off balance, or as in your instance, falling. In most cases their mechanics aren’t nearly good enough to have any sort of accuracy if they get out of their normal arm angle. So, if there’s any doubt, it’s not intentional grounding.

It seems clear to me that he was not intentionally throwing the ball away but was intentionally throwing the ball to a receiver who turned out to be ineligible with no eligible receiver anywhere close.  We obviously don’t know whether or not he KNEW the receiver was ineligible or not.  Had he not thrown the ball he wouldve been sacked.  So was he grounding or just confused?  Does it matter?

This definitely going to be a great game.  As a former player at SA, I’m happy the Starfires played Southwood last week.  SW was a very fast and athletic team and could pass very effectively.

LCC may have issues with SA’s defensive line.  Miller, Gorney, Gilbert can all rush the passer with strength and speed.  Plattner, Kahn, and Summersett are very good LBs.

SA is definitely not your typical 1A team as far as size and talent go. Arnold at QB 6-3 210, Miller at TE/DE 6-4 240, Stutzman and Wanner both 6-2 180.

If Miller or Arnold played at a larger school, they would be getting Div 1 offers.

Can’t wait to watch tomorrow night.  Hopefully SA can pull this one off!

Miller yes... just based on measurables.  thought I heard IU was interested.

Arnold no... very good small school Qb but not close to D1.

If LCC can get after him it will be a game.  He’s not mobile at all.  If they give him time to throw to receivers 2x faster and or 2x bigger than their secondary it will be over quick.

Pioneer has a 1A enrollment and playing up in 2A. If memory serves correctly, the game with NH was a last minute addition to the schedule due to covid. I believe that the game was a week after Pioneer beat 6A Chesterton and had some key injuries but still scheduled up to 4A NH. Yeah, they lost but a 1A enrollment beating a 6A and losing in the closing minutes to a 4A isn't too shabby.

I know the SAC prepares Luers but Pioneer's schedule wasn't too bad either. Andrean was no slouch either. It's ok though, I'm sure Pioneer doesn't mind being overlooked or having their loss to NH being a sign that fans don't think they can beat Luers.

Good luck to both teams, I hope it is a great game and that both teams come out healthy.

No disrespect to Pioneer.  They are consistently a very solid team.  Will be a good game.

Just found it funny that a middle of the pack NE8 team was referred to BOTH as “the toughest team P has played” as well as “little sister to the East” in the same post.

“Big brother to the East” would seem to have been a more apt description.

I’m not too familiar with pioneer but I did watch some of their game with Andrean last night. They run a very similar offense to Fairfield. Run heavy, little to no pass game. Only loss this year is to little sister to the east (New Haven) 32-28. Tough group of kids. Probably the most physical team in the tournament the knights have seen yet.

Lol... NH struggled to finish middle of the pack in the NE8

No excuses because a loss is a loss, but that Eastbrook game was like a perfect storm for Marion. They weren't healthy and any time the county schools play Marion its like a super bowl for them. They've been playing much better as the season has gone on. Wasn't surprised about the Delta game, because they shutout a very good and very similar Delta team before. It should be a good game, sounds like East Noble has alot of talent, however in my clearly biased opinion lmao, I think Marion will be ok as long as they don't put themselves in bad situations.

Biased opinions is what is all about!  LOL... good luck tomorrow

I agree!  I don't know a whole lot about Marion myself but I dug into each team's schedules to try to get a better idea of the type of match-up it might be.  Not a straight forward comparison I know, but still fun to do.  This just leads me to comparing the NE8 to the NCC which I know nothing about, and I'm sure is not apples to apples.  The NCC definitely has some bigger schools.

    Just food got thought...

    Against teams with winning records:

EN 3-2 ... Beat Columbia City twice and Leo, while losing to Leo and Norwell(also lost to Penn who ended 5-5)

Marion 1-3 ... Beat Delta and losing to Eastbrook, Lawrence North and Lafayette Jeff.

    Combined records of teams beaten:

    EN 38-46       Marion 30-55

Combined records of teams lost to:

    EN 25-9         Marion 34-10

Seems to me that all of Marion's losses came to quality opponents, while EN's losses came to quality opponents also.  The team was banged up and still finding it's identity during it's 3 game losing skid mid season though.

So how does the NCC compare to the NE8?  From an EN fan, while our school has had some success in conference lately, the NE8 still seems very competitive.  You better show up and play well on Friday night or you could lose to pretty much anyone.

Kindve strange Marion could loss to Eastbrook and then turn around and beat Delta who had smoked Eastbrook  by 40.  Never expected Marion to beat Delta.  I got EN 21-17

All good questions. That’s why I think you really have to see a play to call intentional grounding.

Just watched film again.  The QB was 2 yds deep in the end zone and fell / falling down backwards to avoid a tackler when he threw. he was not hit and fell to his back.  Threw  a nice ball sidearm to his offensive guard in the flat, 5 yd line, between the hash and the sideline.  Closest receiver down field was at the 24.  Next Closest receiver was on the 6 ya line center of the field.  I guess thought the guard was eligible and unloaded it....Should’ve been a safety.

  9. 48 minutes ago, Bobref said:

    Close, but not quite.

There is a foul for illegal touching by the ineligible. The penalty, if accepted, is enforced from the spot of the illegal touching. But there’s no replay of the down. The penalty includes loss of down.

Now, as to whether this was intentional grounding or not, there’s an awful lot of judgment that goes into that call. So, all I can say about that without actually seeing the play is that if it was intentional grounding, it would be a safety.

Ur right.  Was loss of down.  So if he wasn’t trying to avoid a sack then it was the right call.

  10. 2nd and 10 from the 6 yard line.  QB drops back into the end zone and in order to avoid the sack completed a forward pass to the offense guard (ineligible) on the 5 yard line who runs to the 10 before tackled.  No eligible receiver within 15 yards.  I believe this should’ve been called a safety.  Was called Illegal touch.  1/2 the distance, replay 2nd down.  Correct call?
