Did you notice that Saban’s Alabama teams came back to the field and were no longer superhuman once it became legal for EVERYONE to pay athletes? The man is a legend and one of the greatest to ever do it but even he benefited from “advantages.” -

Westfield has started the model because they CAN. They are “Center Grove Lite” just two decades behind. Growing population, great place to raise a family, similar demographics, commitment to the sport, etc (though Gilbert leaving gives me pause). You think just any school, regardless of enrollment or socioeconomic status can just be handed Eric Moore’s A-Z binder and duplicate what CG has done? Its not that simple. As for “KG”, once again NO one has said enrollment is the ONLY factor but it is A factor…a BIG one. A school of roughly 2500-3000 with less than 25 percent of its student body on free/reduced lunch can and has competed with a school of 4500 with 80 percent free/reduced lunch. I am always asked why I continue to bring these numbers up and am often mocked but look at it like this…15-20 percent of students at a school of 80% free/reduced lunch don’t even have basic needs met. Football, more broadly athletics, is simply way down the priority list for the majority of their student body…not to mention the financial burden. The homes they go to every day after the 3pm bell are broken in many instances and they have taken on unnecessary burdens that teens shouldn’t have to. The school with 2500-3000 and a free/reduced rate of less than 25 percent, has some kids in this boat but not nearly as many. Look at their participation numbers in sports across the board. With 4500 students, shouldn’t BD have 100 kids out for cross country, tennis and swimming? It’s not just their “feeder systems” failing. Bash, and others often downplay this and he actually gets offended as he views this as a slight to what CG has built and as a shot at their coaching staff when it’s simply rather common sense. -

The way they won was an exception Bash…two elite power 5 athletes combined for nearly 50 points. Look at the remaining schools that made up the top 10, in both genders. Track is no longer immune to the effects of socioeconomics. -

The good ole days of the GID involved a man with a special needs child calling people “retards?” Glad I missed it. -

Cannot believe it took me 6 pages to connect the dots…this is the dude whose son is/was all-class and taking photos with kids and signing autographs after basketball games while he is in the stands trash talking on Facebook isn’t it? If so, he’s not interested in/capable of actual discourse. -

You’re missing the point. He told me that the three west side suburban schools he mentioned, hadn’t “won anything” and that BD hadn’t take a step back in anything. Also, track is not a “country club” sport. Warren girls won the state title this year on the backs of 3 individuals. Helluva an accomplishment but the exception and not the rule. -

Why is reading so hard for you? It’s a BIG PART of why they are so good. You cut BD’s enrollment in half and keep its current SES and you have Arsenal Tech. Put your money/time where your mouth is. IPS is looking for coaches constantly. Head over to any IPS school tomorrow morning and volunteer your services and tell them how you’re going to “build a feeder program”…then report back to us in a few years. That’s not what you said. -

It’s not just that though… Hitting the rewind button, when Carmel and CG were exploring their options outside of the MIC, one of the reasons was due to lack of numbers in the country club sports at the remaining 6 MIC schools. Carmel, for example would be better served having an intrasquad meet rather than showing up to LC and their JV tennis players, cross country runners, golfers having no one to take on. If you can’t field a complete team, what’s the point for Carmel to continue this charade? Does LC, in this particular hypothetical example, just not have a “feeder program”? I see the numbers in non-ball sports down tremendously at the middle school level in Marion County. A variety of factors could be the reason why, but it sure as hell isn’t lack of effort. -

You are viewing things in black and white and being purposely hyperbolic. Enrollment is not the end all be all but in the ultimate TEAM SPORT like football, 4000-5000 kids have a tremendous advantage over those half their size. Center Grove has cracked the code, due to the culture and program/feeder system you speak of but their socioeconomics cannot be ignored. The “country club” sports are being dominated by the “rich” suburban schools and they have also narrowed the gap in the ball sports (see Fishers boys basketball). You have taken the most extreme example in America (Carmel swimming) and attempted to make a blanket statement based on the best program in America in ANY sport. If you think that simply trying harder to develop feeder programs is all that is standing in the way of IPS/poor Marion County schools winning state titles in non-ball sports, you’re way more lost than I originally thought. I will continue to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are just trying to stir the pot and start an endless argument because you seek attention. -

Keep shifting those goalposts. You said they hadn’t won anything, lol. The expansion of the west side has hardly affected BD FOOTBALL, for sure. Other than that, just stop with the nostalgia please. Success in the non-ball sports follows the money, it’s not hard to figure out. -

LOL, those three schools have won 3 of the last 6 boys track state titles. I’ve defended you thus far but I am running out of energy. -

Simple urban sprawl as you mentioned yesterday with Carroll, just at a slower rate. What’s happening in the suburbs now is what happened to the county schools in the 80s. -

Your first paragraph is spot on but can you expand on why for those in the back? (Do it in ALL CAPS preferably.) -
2024 6A Who can win it all?
temptation replied to KmartGiant's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Because their enrollment is SO much larger than the remaining schools in 6A. You can combine 6A schools at the bottom of the class and still fall short of 4500-5000 (Carmel and BD). Eventually that takes its toll as we discussed with Cathedral yesterday. People get too caught up in their feelings and feel personally attacked as if these statistics are intended to diminish the other factors that are poured into a winning program. It’s not that simple unfortunately. -

temptation replied to KmartGiant's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Not one person has claimed it is solely enrollment and this is one of a handful of cyclical discussions on this board. BD/Warren can overcome their socioeconomic disadvantage BECAUSE of their large enrollment. However, eventually enrollment reaches a point of diminishing returns. Carmel, the other “mega school” discussed in this thread has both socioeconomics and enrollment on their side which is why I believe 2024 is a put up or shut up year for the Hounds. Comparing 1990’s BD to 2024 BD is asinine by the way. -
