Like most problems, this one is multi-faceted.  In no particular order, here are some reasons I think coaching shortages are brewing in most places across the country......

#1 Less young males who played HS football entering the teaching ranks

#2 More requirements of classroom teachers that make it difficult to coach

#3 Coaches frustrated with travel sports based problems, and schools devaluing education based athletics because in part of travel sports leading to sport specialization and lower participation in traditional school based athletics.

#4 Coaches feeling like their program needs so much year round attention that they no longer feel that they can coach multiple sports

I will propose this question: How do schools improve coach retention ?

Have not seen this in the three different travel programs that my boys have played in ... the oldest will be playing in a new one this summer as he's too old to play in the one he played in last summer.  Coaches have all kept families and kids in mind in scheduling and working out and have continually given parents warning about NOT having kids doing too much outside of practices to make sure that they don't hurt their arms or wear themselves out.  Time off around holidays and consultations with families about travel have been the norm.  High school coach has encouraged my oldest boy to do something over the summer to keep active, but high school play wasn't condition of doing so.  I've heard some horror stories about travel, but haven't experienced it so far with my boys over the programs that we've been part of.

You are on the lucky side of the tally sheet.... too many pushy people with their own agendas gives the whole program a black eye. Sports are very important in many different ways and if a kid can participate in a positive manner then it is a win win situation.

  3. A public service announcement... the following statements will rub some people the wrong way. Travel ball in some cases gives kids/parents the false perception that little Joey is bound for success at the next level. Some of these so called coaches would not know a fundamental if it smacked them in the face. I have observed this in AAU Basketball for instance kids that can't shoot a proper left handed lay up. They can shoot the three and have that crossover dribble down but don't understand about passing to the open man.  I could go on and on but why? Too, too many promises of success at higher levels when they are playing at the lower levels. Why pump hot smoke when the truth should be told. Further, I have seen kids so tired they fall asleep in school because they are exhausted from too many activities.

Coaches that operate the travel circuit and coach at the school level telling kids they will not make the school team if they do not come to every open gym and participate in his program. This is absurd there are just so many positions so why lie ? My school of thought is let a kid do whatever he wants to do because HE/SHE makes the choice not your selfish wants and needs. If a kid is a stud, their ability will come out early on. Coach 'em up and see how far they can go; however, don't give little Joey false hope he can be a starter on you Basketball team if he is built like a Noseguard with non-skill abilities. That is just wrong on so many levels. Bottom line its your choice parents, make sure you have little Joey's best interest in mind.

What I run into is kids who are chronically over worked and under trained.  They walk into a Monday morning weights session in the summer and are so sore, tight, and tired they can't move.

BUT, that doesn't stop them from trying to go to 3 basketball open gyms, 3 weights sessions, a collegiate camp, and play 5-9 "travel" baseball or basketball games over the course of a week in the summer.   Then parents of the 5'9" 150 lb young lad can't understand why he doesn't get more playing time for his high school teams, after all, his travel coach says he is the BEST and he plays all the time!

Travel ball is a tool of the devil... prove me wrong!

Just a general observation from my local area, but we are seeing a trend of more females going into teaching than males with more open positions being filled by women than men. For Pioneer, only head coach Adam Berry works full time at the school while the rest of the staff work elsewhere.

Good observation... lots of schools could not operate a program without outsiders, sometimes volunteers participating.

No, they don't.  Only if you allow it to be so,  just the same as in a public sector job.

I'm sorry, I should have expressed that clearer... when I say the corporation I mean the public sector job not the school corporation .  Coaching took a back seat to my corporate job for many years. It was not until I retired I was able to devote more time to the job I truly love... Coaching. Believe me management positions in corporations own your soul. You don't dance to the tune of the man you get a bad evaluation, are placed on work improvement, and terminated since you are an at will employee.

  7. COVID has had a huge impact on education in both the public and private sector; however, I think the key is pay. There are just so many administrator positions to be had so people scramble when one of the positions comes open. There is a lack of desire to work the long hours of a coach with the low stipend amount or in the case of an assistant no stipend. You haver to have love of the game and be in the position for all of the right reasons, not using the job as a stepping stone to the private sector. The private sector may appear to be a better deal with better pay. It sometimes is all about the $$, once the transition is made the time investment is about the same. The problem the corporation owns your ass, you are told you have to invest at least one weekend day to the job, be prepared to travel in a moments notice, cancel vacation plans, miss celebrations with the family. Are are all corporate positions the same, no they are not. It takes a special individual to be a teacher/coach and oftentimes compensation can't be a concern. I think the decision is yours, do something you love or go to a job with more pay that you will hate within a year.

Young Carmel sisters spotted outdated 'men at work' sign. So they did something about it.

Disheartening, but not surprised,  to see young people so programmed.    Such signs do not "communicate the false and unacceptable message".  Only those looking to be outraged would come to such a conclusion.   Pure woke PC drivel.

WTF... is this the path our culture is taking?  A little over the top !!!!!

I don’t see that there’s a problem. The rules already prohibit any player from striking an opponent “with his fist, locked hands, forearm or elbow, nor kick or knee him.” An open-handed strike to the facemask — a “stiff arm” — does not present a serious risk of head injury unless the runner is some sort of Kung Fu master. It’s not at all analogous to a defender grabbing and twisting the runner’s facemask.

I can honestly say in all the football I’ve seen, I’ve never seen a tackler suffer a head injury as a result of a stiff arm.

Ahh for the old forearm shiver!

He’s going to be hard to replace.  His 2016 team was heads and tails ahead of any 3A and “Success Factored” 4A team at the time (in 2016, traditional 4A teams like Cathedral, Columbus North and New Pal had already moved on to 5A).

In 2016, Concordia was an absolute MACHINE.  As an ancient EIAC guy, I felt terrible that Lawrenceburg drew THAT short straw.

Even last year, he came up with a game plan (minus, perhaps, his top offensive player) that fought Chatard (who ended the year as the 6th ranked team in ALL, repeat, ALL classes per Sagarin) right down to the very, very end.

To be clear, the 3A State Championship games last year were ALL played in the North between Chatard, Concordia and Mishawaka Marian (the Lucas Oil “State Championship” game was an afterthought.........thanks Tri-West AD, btw).

Not that it needs reminding (but I will), the 3A State Champion defeated the 4A State Champion during regular season play.....

Back to the point,  BIG SHOES need to be filled at Concordia.

    MM was a beast.
