When to switch footballs is completely discretionary with the officials. However, when a new series of 4 downs starts, the offense should get a new ball if they want. There is no rule requiring a team to use a timeout to get a new ball in the game.
I suspect that what this is really about is the familiar “kicking ball” scenario. A team checks in several footballs before the game. One of them is the ball they want to kick. But they don’t want to play scrimmage downs with it. Sorry, there is no such thing as a “kicking ball” in high school. A team may be required to play with any one of their checked in footballs. They are all the same.
I was told once at the MS level by a ref. "You have to kick the ball you scored with."

Recall that they used to feed the Christians to the lions in the earlier events of the gladiatorial games. Wasn't all that sporting, but it did kill time and generate beer sales.
Food and local crafts as well.

The milk bottle and ball-peen hammer was always the reference that stuck with me ... always made me cringe and the hair on my neck stand up just thinking about that sound.
How many of you have had milk delivered in a milk bottle/ a bit off topic.

Having never coached football in my life, can someone tell me exactly how beneficial this would be?
You would see the team running plays just like you would by watching their game tape. A drone flying at that distance wouldn't pick up the conversation or terminology being used to call plays I wouldn't think. Maybe you see them practice a play you they otherwise might not have been expecting and preparing for it if they can gain insight on when it might be used. Also, if the team knows they are being watched, they could do things to send the other team on a wild goose chase by showing them things they never intend to use/do or even set them up for whatever it is they really do want to run. It seems like awfully extreme measures to go to for minimal benefit I would think. The time and effort it would take to do this would seem better spent on preparing your own team.
It is a two edged sword... its another paranoid factor too for a drone being flown over a practice field.

Maybe, spying is as old as the game itself.

... which won’t be worth squat if a drone is flying 200 yards above.
Most of the recon is done a low altitude in the mountains; however you make a good point on a higher altitude.

Unless you miss, and the bullet hits an innocent person.
Birdshot is not a bullet... small lead pellets, has a range of about 30 yards.

It is obvious you have never experienced WV Football...

This is a real thing in WV... this has been going on for the past several months. I would like everyone to weigh in on this topic. It is easy to swoop down from the hills over a practice field.

Good luck !

I was referencing a possible interview with the esteemed Chatard Head Football Coach.
There is no legion here. Its more like a squad or a platoon.
I would like to know how a Head Coach has time to be an Attorney... I would love to know his secret !

I think an instance of this resulted in a coach being ejected.
