  1. Hopefully they adjust and get some mojo back with the Idaho game.  If not, Cincy could be a mess, and it won't get much easier.

Penix looked really out of sorts with missing reads and just not with it.  The underhand toss over by the sideline when flushed out of the pocket was especially nice.....how about just flick the ball like a normal forward pass out of bounds??  Throwing into double coverage, while missing the open receiver...my favorite was throwing it into the running back's back, while he was engaged in a block.  Penix looked like a true freshman.

O coordinator is taking the blame.  We shall see.

Let's hope it was a one game poopfest and they will turn it around.  If not, it may be time to develop the youngster.....

If they want to. Not sure IPS wants to sell. After all, we've seen former high schools that became middle schools be resurrected into high schools again.

Attucks closed as a high school and came back

Shortridge closed as a high school and came back

Washington closed as a high school and came back

Marshall closed as a high school, came back, then closed again

Northwest and Arlington are middle schools now, but a different administration and different financial priorities might make those buildings reopen again in the future.

The only one I don't ever see possibly coming back is sadly Broad Ripple (where my dad was assistant principal for 18 years). I think that property is a gold mine for IPS.

I love the architecture of Howe High School.  Can you foresee that school return?

I know its a little further away...but would it be a playing option for Cathedral?

Good start to the season, Great to see Indiana’s Mr. Football , Steele, in action.  79 yards, 7 carries.
“Preferred walk on” offer from Purdue or Scolly from Ball State.
Nice for us football fans to see our state “cream” play.

Yes...enjoyed seeing his 37 yd TD run from various angles on social media this morning.  That young man is a Warrior and a great role model.

All I did was celebrate ONE lonely first place vote in Class 6A for Merrillville and a torrid of bashing was unleashed.

I sincerely apologize. I know Merrillville isnt the equal of Center Grove .

I was just happy they got one vote.   Again, please accept my deepest apology 😢

Uncle Mark...no need for apologies...you are absolutely entitled to your opinions.  We all are...that's what makes a forum fun and interesting.

I really enjoy reading your thoughts....I hope very much you continue to share them.  Your passion for high school football is fantastic.

    Happy Labor Day weekend!!!

Might have something to do with the suburbs?  I can't speak for programs outside of Indiana, but the stats do not lie.  A lot of "inner-city" flight to the suburbs in Indianapolis hence the reason that Brownsburg, Avon, Center Grove, Carmel, Westfield, etc are emerging/established powers?  Just spit balling out loud.  Are kids (regardless of address) flocking TO those programs in Detroit and Miami?  That used to be the case in Indy, but now Marion County talent is showing up in the suburbs more often that the other way around.  Ben Davis used to attract talent from Brownsburg and Avon and now its in the opposite direction.

I've stated for years now that the Indy suburbs will catch up and eventually pass the Marion County schools and it looks great in August/September but just hasn't happened yet in October/November which is the reasoning for your insults.  Ten years ago, I'd have been called crazy, yet here we are again with the HCC dominating the MIC as the season opens.

Once again, I'd like to remind folks reading this thread that we have a poster who publicly backs CATHEDRAL speaking to the specifics of socioeconomics.

Never trust a skinny chef nor a poster who backs a P/P to lecture you on the impact that socioeconomics has on athletics.

Hey Temptation...just having some fun.  I love your passion for Indiana HS football.

Man, its ok if we see the world differently, or perhaps just a topic differently....makes the forum so much more interesting.  Keep the posts coming and my apologies for the hi-jack.

Now back on your topic....always tough to take a game at Carmel stadium.  But I am going with the Trojans and their streak.

Detroit King is as “public” as Cathedral.  In fact, they probably have more future D1 prospects than Cathedral.

A football factory factory first and foremost.

    Keep trying though.  It’s cute.

If you have some "exceptions" to your theory, you need to post them so we all can see.  It seems like you change your theory when its convenient.

"Schools with lower enrollments and higher % of free lunches can't compete with the big boys.....unless they are a football factory...."

    Seriously??

I agree that ESPN does not deserve a break here; the game being on ESPN is on them. But let's not ignore the folks at IMG. Did they have game film going into the contest? If so, they should have seen PLENTY of red flags that said this would be ugly. Not hearing or reading that anyone at IMG said a thing. Did they go into the game with no film? That should have been a red flag too. This is about exposure on a big stage; even for the BS program. As someone said even bad publicity is still publicity.

They both own a pretty signficant error IM...no disagreement.

But ESPN should have some level of quality control to verify programming before they offer it up to the nation.  Without ESPN televising the game, no one really pays much attention to it, do they??

    I agree with your picks.

We'll see exactly how good Center Grove is this week. Personally, I think Carmel will give them a game for a while. In the end, CG wins somewhere in the neighborhood of the score you have. Give me 31-14.

Warren Central continues to improve under Mike Kirschner this week. Not sure how good North Central is, but I hear they are young. Warren 35-14. Incidentally, Kirsch has never lost as a head coach to North Central. He was a perfect 11-0 at BD.

Pike plenty of times has come into Ben Davis in the last 15 years or so looking like a dud and left with a win or an inspiring performance. If the Giants play to their potential, this shouldn't be a game... I'll take BD 45-14.

LN finally got over the hump against LC, and I think they do it again. LN 31, LC 14

Will LN have most everyone back from Covid protocol and able to play?

  10. Hounds knocking off 2 great programs to start the season.  Did I understand the QB throwing the winning TD was a backup playing JV last Saturday??  That's a great story.  Congrats to the Carmel program.

Hosting CG in the Copper Kettle game this friday.  Gotta give the Hounds credit for that opening schedule...LVille Trinity, Detroit ML King and Center Grove all in the first 3 weeks.  Wow!!

You’re catching on.  It is more important then enrollment though.  Thanks for the reminder.

No..I am not really catching on.  My comment was tongue and cheek.  Nothing has changed from my past comments...it may very well be a variable in the equation for success.  You and I disagree about the size of that variable.

I am not sure why we overreact at the beginning of the year.  First, most teams don't play their best football at the beginning of the year.  Secondly, talent is absolutely cyclical, and sometimes the young ones need to develop.  New Pal can absolutely more than compete in 5A....their history has shown it.  Just a few years ago, they knocked off 6A CG twice in back to back seasons.  The second time NP beat the Trojans, the CG team was being criticized for being down.....the young Trojans developed, played their best football at the end of the season, and went all the way to the 6A final and dang well could have won it.  So why we try and draw conclusions based upon such a small volume of work early in the season leaves me scratching my head.

Have followed European soccer for years. Teams being promoted from lower leagues get a massive revenue boost and can subsequently go out and buy top league level players. Doesn't work that way in Indiana High School football.

That's fact....plus promotion and relegation is built on a long, long season of work....not just from the results of a single game.  A long season playing all teams in their league multiple times...not teams from lower level leagues.

I’m not sure how it isn’t irrelevant? Despite being significantly outgained Cathedral still had the ball with the lead and one play to win the game.

I guess what probability would you give then for a team to:

    a) get a 4th and 1 stop

    b) go 50+ yards with no TO’s

    c) not only score but score a TD

all with just over a little minute left to play.

If I would have offered you even money prior to the 4th down play that Center Grove was going to win the game would you have seriously taken that bet?

Gotta give you an A for perseverance....

I would have absolutely taken that bet on 4th and 1 when you coach elected not to punt.  No way was Cathedral going to put the ball in the air and CG was sending everyone and the kitchen sink.  With the level of D talent...absolutely would have taken that bet. Now if your coach had punted......that's a different question about odds...

Once the stop was made, momentum completely changed. Cathedral's heads went down and CG was a ball of fire.  It was like a hot knife going through butter.  Not only scored, but left time for Cathedral to get the ball back.

Look, we are hijacking the thread and I don't want to be that guy.  Plus I notice how you argue and it turns into a vicious loop.  No interest in going there.  Let's just agree to disagree on your probability odds, and how everything else in the game was inconsequential to the outcome.

  14. 3 minutes ago, Footballking16 said:

I'm not arguing whether Center Grove dominated the stat sheet or not. That's really irrelevant from the point I'm making. Despite being outgained, Cathedral had the ball, leading, with a half yard to win the game with a little over a minute left. If that scenario occurred 100 times the likelihood of Cathedral winning occurs ~90 times. Absolutely everything had to go right for Center Grove to win that game and everything wrong for Cathedral to lose given what transpired.

You're right it is all history and nothing that happened last year has an effect this year.

Thank you for your response.  We will simply agree to disagree about the depth of an entire game being irrelevant to its final outcome.  I am also not sure I agree on that 4th and 1 that CG only had a 10% chance to win the play.  That sounds like pretty subjective probability to me. (but I am no statistician....just enough during college years to be dangerous)

If I follow your logic that its really about one play, bottom line one team got it done and the other didn't....that is as simple as it gets.

Good luck to the Irish tonight and this season...they continue to have an outstanding team.

  15. 1 hour ago, Footballking16 said:

I'm saying Cathedral ran a terrible 4th and a half yard play instead of running it behind their offensive line. Or simply punt.

To win that game Center Grove had to:

    a) Stop Cathedral on 4th and half a yard

    b) Go 50+ yards with no timeouts with a little over a minute left

    c) Not only score, but score a TD

To win that game Cathedral had to:

    a) gain half a yard

If you don't understand probability and how it relates to the likelihood of an outcome occurring at a certain juncture of time that's fine, just say you don't understand. Cathedral absolutely should have won that game. They didn't.

Interesting view.  I might contend you are oversimplifying the game and basing it down to one play.  As Grover pointed out, had there not been a 70 yd interception return earlier, your comments about the game end don't even come into play.  There were several factors in that game that led to the final outcome...not just the last series of plays and decisions.

Cathedral had difficulty moving the ball during the game.  They had one offensive TD, that occurred from a missed tackle on the sideline.  Cathedral had a total of 183 yds....60 of it rushing.

At the end of the day, it was a great game.  Kids were not injured (a great thing given its a year end non-conference regular season game, with nothing at stake other than bragging rights) with both teams winning their class state championships.  It was in 2020...as someone else said...its history.

Question...why the tone above? Isn't it ok on a discussion forum for people to have different takes?

  16. Wow...a heavy week of MIC teams on the road, with exception of WC.

    My picks....

    CG

    BD

LT - would love to see the Hounds pick up the win out of state for Indiana football

    HSE

LN (they go on the road and pick up the upset win)

NC (they do the same at Fishers and start moving upward)

Z'Ville  (although I think Pike makes this a game)

    Its finally here fellas!!!
