  1. Rensselaer coming back down in 2A taking the place of Laville in that sectional will keep it more competitive. The Bombers have always been very competitive in 2A, are well coached, and I expect they will be again this year being back down. We always scrimmage them at Manchester camp and are always impressed with a lot of their guys.

I'd be a little bit careful predicting future successful/rebuilding years based on MS classes. There have been many programs across the state that have crowned MS groups "state champs" before entering HS only to see that same group fall short of the ridiculous expectations people build based on the performance of 12-14 year old kids. On the other side, there have been unsuccessful groups in MS at AC - as recently as the seniors that started the state appearance run - that have gone on to earn success when it matters most.

Never know what you can put together with 4 different classes of kids. Some groups can fill the holes others lack to turn out very good teams. I have no doubt Adams Central will be a threat in 2A no matter who they put on the field. Hopefully 2A can provide better competition and closer games than a lot of the ones AC played the last couple of years in 1A. Not a knock on 1A North either. Some great teams, the last couple of AC teams have just been special. Which makes those Lutheran teams even more special.

Anyone got any predictions on the South or what some teams bring pack. Did North Posey graduate a lot? Stockton, Triton Central, and Brownstown Central had some good teams last year. Returning any talent from those teams?

There are four on the IHSAA career stat site that I've seen in person:

    • Chris Mills - LCC
    • Clark Barrett - LCC
    • Mikey Kidwell - West Lafayette
    • Kyle Adams - West Lafayette

Hands down, the best of those four was Mills who graduated in 2009.  For last decade out of those above, I'd have to go with Kidwell who graduated in 2016.

Who was the 2009 QB for West Lafayette? Won Mr. Indiana Football if I remember right. Just remember watching him on film the week before our high school played him with my dad when I was a bit younger and knowing we were in trouble.

I'd like to know what Busco has coming back.  They took a shot at ending Luers run early last year.  If they weren't hit too hard by graduation, they'd have to be considered a contender in the North.

According to maxpreps a lot of skilled guys coming back with some decent stats. Would need to see them have regular season success against a schedule that isn't anything to write home about. Not saying you don't have a point. Just hard to put a team that went 2-8 last year in the conversation with some of the others.

My comment wasn't necessarily a dig at the 59ers, but they seem to lose some games they should clearly win.

Could you give examples? Just as an outsider of their schedule it looks pretty beefy to me. I'm also not familiar with some of the teams they play on their schedule but a third of it is Bishop Chatard, Merrillville, and Valpo. All very top notch teams. Hanover Central seems to be a program on the rise and Lowell is always tough with good athletes from the games I've seen.

I have a gut feeling that those Decatur Hawks are going to wax everyone in 5A this year. The only close competition out of the south IMO is EC and Whiteland. Those programs tend to reload every year. However I feel Decatur returns too much talent. Unfortunately I do not believe that my beloved Quakers have much of a chance but I will believe in them and hope that they do. We return a very good running back core and some offensive line starters but our offense will be one dimensional. We are likely starting a true freshman quarterback and we’re losing our “superback” plus 3 wideouts. We are also losing our three best defensive players. But oh well, I will continue to hope for the best for the Red Pride.

3 and a third yards a carry is our motto. If you can get that every play who needs a passing game!

I hate when the true freshman is better than the guy you redshirted the year before, but you don't see too many redshirt freshman these days in high school football. (just yankin your chain, couldn't resist 😉 haha)

  7. Saw someone wanted this topic, so here we go. Obviously some new faces coming up in Adams Central and Lutheran. Could make a very strong case for both being able to represent the North and South in 2A if they were there the last two years. Interesting to see how they fair this year. Plenty of representatives from both schools on here, so I'll let them talk about what they have returning. As far as the North goes, I like Bluffton, LCC, and you can't ever rule out Andrean for the North. Obviously not sure what Adams Central has, but they should be in that mix as well just because of what they have been able to accomplish the last two years. If I had to pick dark horses, I'd go with Eastside, Eastbrook, and Rochester in the North. All run offenses that seem to fair well no matter the conditions and always have solid defenses to go with it. Maybe someone can chime in on the South favorites or teams to watch. No Mater Dei in the South takes a huge contender out of the mix down there. What do y'all think?

Monrovia the lone Public School in this Sectional, and we play 4 of them during the regular season.

Every public school in the state is in your corner. Go get'em!

That's interesting. Not very often do you hear just Jefferson, it's Lafayette Jeff. Or Riley, it's South Bend Riley. Evansville Reitz. Indianapolis Ritter. I think when a city has more than one high school, it's common to label them with the city name in front. When there is one high school, it's just named after the ciy..............Warsaw, New Haven, Angola, ect.

Kokomo has multiple high schools(Kokomo, Western, Northwestern, Taylor), but yet there is just one with the name Kokomo. It is interesting how some have the city name and some do not.

I still think they are an 8-12 team based on performance:

They lost to #7 Snider (if they were in 6A) by 3pts. Difference in the game was two pick 6's for Snider

They lost to #5 HSE by 14. Difference was two pick 6's by HSE.

They beat #11 Warren Central by 4pts.

They wasted #20 Homestead ("mid pack") by 21.

I think all being said, Warsaw's victory over Carroll was impressive. I would call Carrall "upper level caliber 6A". I'm defining "upper level" as top third.

Isn't their QB going to Iowa?

This is so disappointing on so many levels. Shame on the IHSAA for being so hesitant/resistant to change. So 38 other States can have some sort of seeding/qualification - but we can't seem to figure out a format that works??? Give me a break.

And if you can seed the top 2, you can seed everyone

Good regular seasons need to be rewarded.

First, I want to say I agree with you completely, seed them all. But we won't ever do that because if you seed them all you might as well just take that first week of the playoffs out. Just going to be a bunch of blowouts. Even the sectional of death this last year with Chatard, Guerin, Peru, Tippy, Mac would have only had one competitive game in it maybe. The rest still would have been blowouts. So if you have a bunch of blowouts no one will go to the game or say we just shouldn't have it. Which means less money the IHSAA makes, so I don't think we will ever see everyone seeded. I agree that we should, just probably won't ever get to see it happen unless we just end up having a qualifier.

That is a huge amount of money, don't you think?  Could buy a lot of textbooks with that.

    Laptops*

    No one uses textbooks anymore

And I'll side with you on how great playing on a nice natural field is in in August and September, and my buddies and I still talk about the fun games in the rain when the field was completely trashed, jerseys stained, and mud just about anywhere there's a crack. But...

You gotta face the facts. A turf field is better for all athletics at a school. In the long run, you definitely cut down on a lot of expenses outside of the field, not just maintaining it. Turf doesn't stain jerseys as much if at all. Don't have to buy new jerseys as often. It also doesn't limit you. I know a lot of schools don't have white pants because you can't keep them completely stain free on a natural field. You can on a turf field a little better(not saying they will stay perfect). I hope one day Rochester can get added to this list.

The way I'm reading it, Bob is correct. The best Notre Dame can do is #5. The system already needs to be reworked though. I'm on board with the Big 10, ACC, and the SEC getting a first round bye. Each of those conferences are going to produce a legitimate contender. But with Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Washington jumping ship to the SEC and Big 10, I'm struggling with the Pac 12 and Big 12 getting that fourth spot. I get it, the NCAA wants the conference championship to mean something. But the Big 12 and Pac 12 aren't what they once were.

Long story short? It's time for Notre Dame to make a move. The Big 10 makes the most sense. If Notre Dame wants their brand to stretch from coast to coast, the Big 10 will provide that and secure their annual game with USC. Keep Navy, ditch Stanford for Washington or Oregon. Replace Clemson with (cough cough) Maryland or Rutgers. Play one of those games on the road when hosting Navy that year. That way their brand on the East Coast remains. Notre Dame's only concern at this point is lack of brand in the Southeast.

This last years playoff committee begs to differ!

  14. 2 minutes ago, BTF said:

Good point. Things are certainly different now than what they used to be. If I'm doing the math right, doesn't the risk for a player getting injured before the postseason go up approximately 10% by adding another game? Is it really worth it?

Yes, but I mean its a part of the game. We've had kids get injured in the scrimmage game. Heck when I played we went live in practice all the time. We spent more time beaten the snot out of each other and getting injured during practice than we did in games. Even going pro pads and thudding in practices nowadays there are still freak accidents that happen. I understand where you are coming from because it will be more wear and tear on the kids bodies, but injuries happen all the time, it sucks, but it happens.

Dumb idea to leave Lucas Oil.  Great Idea to go to 10 games by eliminating the worthless scrimmage game.

How about 40 team classes?  8 championship games....4 each day?

Just at first glance, other than the first 40 schools, all the other classes wouldn't have a difference of more than 200 kids. It wouldn't be terrible. Only problem is you then have to change the playoff format to something other than everyone in the class getting in. I could be wrong, but I think that was what was said at the beginning of this topic. 32 team class everyone still makes it in. Add a week 10. So 40 schools would help with that enrollment gap from what i looked at, it would create more obstacles with the playoffs tho.

  16. 22 minutes ago, Daniel_Bragg said:

No.  Absolutely not.  You solution to this is forget the small schools, or send a 6A Final to somewhere other than Lucas Oil?  Come on.  Let's be serious.

Because the kids care more about where they are playing rather than having the opportunity to win a state championship for their school? Because playing in front of touchdown Jesus wouldn't be cool enough? Playing at Ross-ade stadium where kids probably grew up watching games their whole life wouldn't be cool enough? Never did I say forget the small schools. I said the classes would be on a rotation. Some classes would play at Lucas Oil Stadium, some would not. The next year they would flip. You pitch a better idea Caption Insano, I would love to hear it.
