Common sense and hard reality override "sufficient interest" for schools on the contraction watch list.  Many dont have the intestinal fortitude to pull the plug and let football die.  Its the right thing to do under certain circumstances.

Common sense says that it's an extra-curricular activity for kids and if there's enough kids wanting to play it, and the school is willing to sponsor it, who are you to suggest they shouldn't have that opportunity?

  2. Recruiting rankings factor in volume.  Far more taken for the East (141) than the West (114) if my math is correct.  Over half the West had 15 or fewer while nobody in the East had fewer than 18.

Also, the head-to-head comparison over the past few years suggest it is pretty balanced.  There are 21 crossover games every season and I think I've seen they've been 11-10 the past 2 full seasons.

The big difference is the BTCG but that's pretty much a reflection of just Ohio State and it's been rare for anyone in either division to top them until this year.

Because momentum in both recruiting and progress in each program is going in opposite directions and losing a top flight in-state recruit with Purdue ties to a rival school who historically hasn't recruited all that way would not have been a good look.

As an IU fan I can get on board with this and hope it plays out this way.

You were right.  That momentum from the Strickland commitment propelled Purdue to an 8-win season and made IU go winless in conference.  Just imagine if he had chosen IU and all that momentum went the other way.  IU may well have been playing in the upcoming BTCG for a spot in the playoffs.  #LEO

I realize that because WEBO has played and lost to Danville, Tri-West and Brebeuf.....Gibson Southern should probably just save the gas on a bus ride.  That said, any other thoughts on the outcome of this contest?

Gibson Southern is the pinnacle of high school football.  For anyone to even consider the notion that they could lose is absurd.

There.  Is that a little better for your ego?

Iowa didn't have much of an offense...and it showed.

Michigan State didn't have much of a pass defense...and it showed.

Ohio State has both.  Although Stroud can be shaky, they have great WRs and decent running backs.  I also fear their defense and just hope Purdue keeps it respectable.

Ohio State's passing defense isn't exactly a strength.  Middle of the pack in the BIg Ten.  But, to your point, better than MSU.

Still, they are on a 24-game Big Ten winning streak for a reason (Purdue in 2018 was their last conference loss).  It would be a very big upset for Purdue to go to Columbus and win.  That hasn't happened since John Cooper was patrolling the sidelines for Ohio State.

But Purdue is playing with house money in this one.  If Ohio State gives them an opening, AOC can get hot and the Purdue defense is salty this year.  It could be a game if OSU isn't on top of things.  If they are, they can blow out most teams in the country at home.

That sounds like you're describing a certain head coach from Iowa,. Ferentz fits all the description in your 2nd and 3rd sentence.

Him.  Alvarez.  Fitzgerald.  Even Tiller.  All had opportunities to move on from their Big Ten program and chose to stay.  I can't say I know what's important to Coach Brohm, but I do know he's already turned down opportunities to leave for Tennessee and Louisville (alma mater) to stay at Purdue.  Those aren't national powers but both had some appeal I'm sure.

Last I knew, their family still maintains a home in Louisville and his parents still live there as well.  It was where he grew up.  I think staying close to Louisville is important to him as well which I think is an advantage for Purdue in keeping him compared to all but a handful of programs, a couple of which he's already been pursued by.

Their pace is like Paul Westhead’s system at LMU and the other places he coached basketball. It goes something like this, they are going to run their offense as fast as they can run it and during the course of the game they’re going to run about 30 more plays than you. They think by running fast and running more plays they are going to out score you based on percentages. They have a great system, maybe one of the most unique approaches in the state. Yes it is difficult to play it, but you can match it with physical play and passing deep down the sidelines and influencing their defensive alignment to your advantage.

So it's going to help them in games where their offense is more efficient (every single regular season game against bad competition) but just the same it will hurt them when the play a better team.  All it does is lengthen the game so the benefit really goes to whoever is more efficient that game.  Most of the time that's going to be them but after regionals it could just as easily be their opponent

Drumming up some interest: Boilermaker coach making a name for himself with upsets: https://deadspin.com/drumming-up-some-interest-boilermaker-coach-making-a-n-1848025516

If the Boilermakers defeat OSU this Saturday will this be Mr. Brohm's last season in West Lafayette?

Depends on who wants him and what he wants.  He could be Purdue's coach for the next 20 years and if all he does is go to bowls and beat IU 3/4 of the time he will never be in danger of getting fired.  Winning the Big Ten West or the BTCG would make him a legend.  If he wants to put himself in a better position to chase a national championship and someone like Florida comes calling, he probably would take it.  It really depends on what he wants.  I don't think anyone is going to offer him a salary Purdue can't match.  He's already 26th in the country.  If Purdue wanted to bump him up a little more they could.  Is someone willing to throw a top-10 type salary at him based on this season?  I doubt it.

I realize coaches and ADs have little control over what overzealous parents do.  But, if I was a coach, one of the first things I would do is assign an assistant to get every player’s social media accounts, follow them, and let them know that the coaches will be aware of everything they post on social media.

I’ve seen firsthand some things put out there by players that, if I was their coach, would have them watching at least a game or two from the stands.

    This is an excellent idea.
