    Tippy,

This thread was shared with me and it's incredible!  We're not from Lafayette and all I've been able to really get my hands on is our history in the MaxPreps era.  I would love to sit down and learn more about our program's history!  If you're willing, please get a hold of me so I can get put more of this history together!  bnay@lcss.org.  Thank you for considering!

Thank you!  I would love to meet with you, but I won't be able to until January.  What day in January would be best for you?

I didnt know LCC was that big back in the 60s/early 70s... what caused them to lose enrollment numbers ?

Enrollment started to go down after St. Ann's grade school closed in 1968.  Some of those kids from St. Ann's went to public school after they closed.  In 1990 some of the reasons were a bus system that was inadequate to handle many pickups outside the city, where most of the growth was occurring at that time.  The cost of tuition.  In 1970 LCC tuition was $200.  In 1991 the tuition was about $1600, a 743 percent increase.  There were only 2 Catholic grade schools feeding into LCC compared with 4 in the 1960's.

What strikes me as odd is the number of safeties that these teams had ... and some cases two in a game by a team.

SW got 2 safeties in the 4thQ of the 1964 game.  The first safety came on a blocked punt, out of the end-zone, and the 2nd came when Combs was nailed in the end-zone by Ed Mahan while trying to get away a pass

  8. Wainwright and Southwestern consolidated into McCutcheon in 1975.

Southwestern first played Central Catholic on September 18, 1959 at SW new field.  It was SW 3rd season of football and LCC's 2nd season of football.

    Gotcha... All very interesting..  thx!

I do think ther was a rivalry w SW.. Lcc n SW/Wainwright/McC all on the South side of Laf.. carried over w McC for a couple yrs..  the Mavs were very good.. I do recall Lcc went 2-0 vrs some very very good Mav teams at the start of that series..  it was important to beat SW... no matter what they called themselves... LoL

LCC played Southwestern every year from 1959-1974.  It was a rivalry game.  Playing SW back then is just like LCC playing McC today.  LCC went 12-4 against SW during those years.  It was the last game of the season from 1968-1974.  In 1969 both teams were 9-0 and LCC beat SW 26-6 that year.

Tippy... im confused... enrollment was dropping... but they were close to being moved up to 2A by enrollment? How is that??

They were not close to being moved up by enrollment in 1980. They were close to being moved up in 1980 because HC would not let them back in the conf. if they didn't move up.  They had to wait a year to move up because the IHSAA only moved teams up in odd numbered years and LCC thought they were in 2A in 1980, but they were not.  LCC was in 2A in 1981 and 1982, but it didn't have anything to do with enrollment. Sorry for the confusion. I only put a little bit of the story on here at a time, and that is not a good thing.

  11. 1 hour ago, BendNotBreak said:

But in the 80s u say they were almost 2A by enrollment?????

LCC was always class A by enrollment.  I don't know how close they were to ever being in 2A by enrollment.  They were only in 2A in 1981 and 1982 because the HC wouldn't let them in the conf. if they didn't move up.  LCC was in class A in 1976 and they had almost 400 students, but there was only 3 classes at that time.

  12. 55 minutes ago, foxbat said:

That's a significant drop off when you go from four K-8 schools and a high school in the area to the equivalent of two K-6, a JH, and HS.

LCC went from about 500 students in 1970 to 200 in 1990.  In 1978 LCC had 392 students and in 1992 they had 207 students.  That is why LCC withdrew from the Hoosier Conference in 1992.  I think the LCC JH opened about 1987.  That is probably when St. Mary's went to K-3 and St. Boniface 4-6.

That's interesting as St. Ann's doesn't have a school associated with it nowadays and St. Mary currently only goes K-3rd and St. Boniface only has 4th-6th.  I'm assuming that that split between St. Mary/St.Boniface may have happened later on and both might have been K-6 originally.  Given that LCC almost closed in 1990 on numbers, I suspect that K-6 being split between St. Mary / St. Boniface might have been the canary in the coal mine on eventual high school numbers given that LCC numbers used to easily be in the 300s at one time.

St. Ann's grade school closed in 1968.  All 4 schools were K-8th in the 1960's.

Kevin O'Shea was the QB on that 1982 McCutcheon team.  McCutcheon beat LCC 47-13 that year.  Franklin Central beat McCutcheon 40-13 in the finals, but FC only beat Crawfordsville 9-6 in the Sectional playoff game in 1982.

Lcc petioned up to 2A for 81 n 82 Really??   I only heard of MM and Scenia doing that on their own... hmmm.. nice catch!

They petioned up in 1980, but in October 1980 they found out they were still in 1A because the IHSAA only moved teams in odd numbered years.  The other teams in the HC were not happy about that but they understood.

Tippy.. u should clear that up if ur gonna do a history thread. Miss Anthrop would not approve.. lol.  It would b a surprise to learn that Lcc was ever anything other than class A... i believe enrollment was in decline.. n headed for the chopping block...  Mish Marion is special.. I beleve they petioned all the way up to 3A from 1A.. perhaps they fell back in line with their enrollment when 4A was introduced??

Miss Anthrop would probably give me an F for lack of clarity.

Fact:  LCC was in 2A in 1981 and 1982.  In 1975 the Hoosier conference wanted LCC to move up to 2A so the teams that beat LCC would get 2 points instead of 1 playoff point.  The other teams in the Hoosier were all in 2A.  LCC said no and they left the conference.  In 1980 LCC had a new coach and wanted back in a conference.  The Hoosier Conference said they would only let LCC back in if they moved up to 2A.  LCC said ok and they moved up to 2A.  When the Cluster System went in effect in 1983, LCC went back down to 1A.
