Now Harrison has to pull off the win in 5A just to mess things up ... they are north of Lafayette, but playing in IHSAA 5A South.

I put this on here, so Harrison will win state this year.  🙂  If Harrison wins, that is a win for the north, even if the IHSAA has them in the South.  I think there are some people on here that would like to see anyone north of Lafayette win state.

  2. My "OH MY" teams of the week are all the teams in and north of Lafayette.  In the last 4 years there have been 24 teams win championships, and only 3 have been in and north of Lafayette.  LCC in 2019, Andrean in 2021, and Valparaiso in 2022.  No team north of Lafayette has ever won state in 6A.  In 5A there was Valparaiso in 2022, Fw Snider in 2015 and Penn in 2000.  In 4a there was Fw Dwenger in 2018 and 2015 and Lowell in 2005.  In 3A West Lafayette won state in 2018, Fw Concordia in 2016, Andrean in 2013 and West Lafayette in 2009.  In 2A Andrean won in 2021, Rensselaer in 2014 and FW Luers 2009-2012.  In 1A LCC won state in 2019, Pioneer in 2017-2018, LCC in 2015 and LCC 2009-2012.  This year it might be a clean sweep for teams south of Lafayette again.  In 6A this year you have Brownsburg, Ben Davis and maybe Center Grove.  In 5A Bloomington South looks really good.  They beat Brebeuf  51-26.  In 4A there is East Central.  3A you have Chatard and Gibson Southern.  In 2A there is Triton Central and North Posey,  and in 1A you have Lutheran.

In the 1940's -1970's, South Bend schools and Gary (area) schools had some of the best teams in the state.  South Bend Washington won state in 1973 and was 10-0 in 1943 and 9-1 in 1942.  Their only loss was to East Chicago Washington.  Mishawaka Marian won state in 1975 and 76.  Portage won state in 1977.  I was just thinking about all the good teams in the north through the years.  Penn, Jimtown, Griffith and many others. There doesn't seem to be many great teams north of Lafayette these days like there was years ago.  South Bend schools today, Oh My!

I’m curious as to how many people on here actually know who Wilbur Snyder is. The young folks have probably never heard of him. Heck, most don’t even know Dick the Bruiser which feels like a crime if you’re a Hoosier.

I know all about Dick the Bruiser.  His name was William Afflis and he played football 4 years at Lafayette Jeff.  He played guard and was an All-State player.  His Senior year, in 1946, the Jeff football team went 7-1.  Jeff's only loss was to Indy Tech, but Tech had to forfeit.

As I recall (though I might be wrong) the HCC showed all three Lafayette teams the door out of the conference; it was not Jeff, McCutcheon, or Harrison wanting to leave. Though in hindsight, all three are probably better off for it.

I think all 3 Lafayette teams were shown the door and wanted to get out all at the same time.  Jeff wanted to play in the best conference in the state and the NCC was not the best anymore.  None of the Lafayette teams could compete with most of the teams in the HCC.  Jeff went 0-10 one year.

6 HCC teams out of 8 in this poll.  Franklin Central with the 8th toughest schedule in the state per Sagarin, the lowest of those 6 teams. Westfield at #2 is the highest.  Not too shabby, considering they tend to beat up on each other. Noblesville could make some noise. That offense that they run is very difficult to defend if you're not used to going against it. That showed last Friday against Brownsburg. Guaranteed they will give either Westfield or Carmel a game if they get by Zionsville.

Lafayette Jeff knew the HCC would be the best conference in the state in 2004.  It has taken a few years, but that year is here.  Lafayette Jeff couldn't take the heat and had to get out of the HCC.

  6. Greensburg - Greensburg has had bad teams before, but this year might be the worst ever.  They lost 74-0 to South Dearborn in week 5 and they are 0-7.  Greensburg plays East Central this week.  Oh My!  I am sure EC will be getting ready for Roncalli starting today.  After playing Louisville Male and Cathedral, Roncalli will look like they have been through the ringer when they play East Central.  East Central should be fresh and ready to go and beat Roncalli 42-14.

Brownsburg - This is the best Brownsburg team I have ever seen.  To beat this team, you will probably have to score over 30 points.

Yes... it can happen... I wasn't alive 2 c it... but ther was that Milan BB Title thing in 54'  And with school choice and mayb pay to play gaining steam it could happen in small school future... who knows... btw.. that was an Awesome Sheridan Team!

Milan only won that game because they held the ball for a long time.  That would never happen today.

LCC had the 47-game streak, and Sheridan had a 44-game streak from 2005-2008.

Assuming LuHi doesn't fill it's week 9 opening and doesn't draw the sectional 47 bye, it would take a third state title win to equal the Sheridan streak.  Tying the LCC streak would require 2024 wins over a steadily improving Beech Grove team, Cardinal Ritter, and a Triton Central team that may be the defending 2A champions at the time.

Can anyone confirm the longest streak in state history?  Bloomington had a 59-game streak from 1968-1973.  Not sure if that's the longest, but it sounds like an untouchable record.

I think that 59 game streak is the longest.  Where is Rudy?  I think Lutheran will win 50+ games in a row before the streak is over.  There is nothing LCC and Linton can do about it because they have been in 2A.

No worries... I respect the AC program... they won a State Title... so they Know what it takes... i've been around since 3 class FB... sooo when someone like BTF puts his credibility on the line making a bonehead statement like 90/80% of 1a Titles would go to this AC squad... its just absurd... the closest thing to that I can remember was when 84? Sheridan fans thout they could win the BiG School Title... 😄  I'm sure their staff knew better... but hey it's alotta fun to speculate!  😊

It was the 1988 Sheridan team that said they could beat Ben Davis.  Ben Davis beat Marion 43-0 for the 5a title that year.

With week 7 in the books... id guess Triton Central has an edge to win 2A... not to say someone else in 2a south couldnt knock em off.. 2a north is an absolute free 4 all... id give a slight edge to Luers right now if I had to choose... as for Lcc... sag has them way up ther right now... n im not sure they can get by the Zebras with the way Tippy Valley dismantled WL... too bad TV is in the Sec of Death... that Sec is absolutely loaded... maybe more so than I can recall... n dats alotta yrs!!   Id still say 2a overall is not as strong at the top as in yrs gone by... jmho

I agree with you about 2A not being as strong this year.  Sagarin Ratings has 1 team in 2A in the top 80.  Triton Central is ranked 49th.  Lutheran beat Triton Central 43-13.  1A has 3 teams in the top 80 and 3A has 13 teams in the top 80.

I think LCC can beat Rochester.  TV beat Twin Lakes 35-7.  LCC beat Twin Lakes 43-0.  🙂

Very sorry for the confusion. I was only talking 2A. Not a comparison of classes. Is 2A supposed to be rated higher than 1A? Fill me in please.

If 2A had great teams, I think they would be rated higher than all the teams in 1A.  You said 2A South was loaded.  If that means 2A South has better teams than 2A North this year, that might be true.  You should list all the great teams in 2A South, and then maybe everyone can decide if BendNotBreak was right when he said 2A was down this year compared to other years.

Great week to get a gage on what appears to b a down year in 2A... Lcc taking it on the chin vrs Guerin, WL and couldnt score vrs Ham Heights.. with Tippy Valley vrs WL (Tippy having blown out Rodchester) and Andrean vrs Chatard.... 2a north may get a little clearer...  aaaaahhh gotta love the transitive property of HS football... 🤔😄

LCC has a good chance to win sectional and regional.  They would probably play Luers in Semistate.

  13. 1 hour ago, Tin Cup said:

I know nothing about Andrean this year.  Just that they are a program with a lot of tradition and I think Chatard's coach is an alum.

Is this going to be a good matchup?

No!  Andrean is not as good as last year.  I think the score will be something like 35-7.  Chatard will be mad this week.  It is hard to score on Chatard.

  14. Good news for Tippecanoe Valley fans!  TV seems to be on the rise.  In 2014 they were 1-9, but they look really good this year and are playing better teams.  Tippecanoe Valley plays West Lafayette this week.  I never thought TV would play WL.  Tippecanoe Valley might not win against WL, but I bet they play WL better than most of the teams in the HC.  Oh My!

Indy Tech!  Tech lost to Richmond 19-0, and Richmond was the only team Tech beat last year.  I think this is as bad as it can get at Tech.  They are the worst team in 6a and I don't think they can beat anyone in 5a.  Tech plays Harrison (WL) this week.  Oh My!

If anyone has an Oh MY! team, post it.

  15. Indy Lutheran - Just how good is this team?  Lutheran beat Lapel 38-7, and that is better than Hamilton Heights did against Lapel.  HH is 5-0.  It sure looks like Lutheran is going to win 1a again, and I'm not sure Adams Central can put up much of a fight.  This is the year Lutheran should be playing West Lafayette instead of LCC.  OH MY!

North Newton - What has happened to North Newton?  They were good in the 1990's and gave West Lafayette a game in 1993.  1993 was the year WL won state.  West Central beat North Newton 68-6 this past week.  NN has only scored two td's in 5 games.  North Newton hasn't had many great teams over the years, but I think they have hit rock bottom this year.  Is there anyone in Indiana that North Newton can beat?  Well, they do play SB Clay this year.  "OH MY"

I hate to speak an absolutes, but I’m sorry…

You can’t in one breath question, a teams ability to get to state, and then, in the next sentence claim they are a serious threat to East Central, lol.

(Furthermore, Ringer of East Central could possibly be the fastest player on the field in a potential New Haven/East Central matchup at Lucas Oil.)

    Just stop.

If Center Grove beats Ben Davis and wins state and East Central wins state, maybe by a score of 35-7, some East Central fans are going to say they are the best team in the state because they beat Moeller by more points than Center Grove.  New Haven is good, but I don't think New Haven will make it to state.

  17. One more WL Story!  I knew Gene Swank, and he was the QB for the 1932 WL football team.  I talked to him a few years before he died.  On Sept. 23, 1932 WL played Lafayette Jeff at Purdue's Stuart Field.  Shortly after the second half started, Swank received a bump on the head that left him semi-conscious for a time.  He did not return to the game and Jeff won 20-0.  I asked Swank about that game, and he just kept telling me, "that was a bad mistake."  I never did find out exactly what happened.  Maybe he went right when he should have turned left.
