I believe that the rumor I'd heard is that Vlahogeorge and Keller attended Catholic elementary schools before settling at Jeff. Don't know if anyone can confirm or not.
I'm not sure about them. Bob Downing was Catholic and was assistant football coach and head coach from 1985-1994 at Jeff. His sons Joe and Doug Downing played at Jeff from 1979-1982. Paul "Spider"Fields was the baseball coach at Jeff for many years and his teams won state in 1969 and 1973. Paul was Catholic. The 1992 Jeff basketball team went to state and lost in OT. Courtney Harris and Brad Knoy were Catholic and were both stars on that team. Carson Harris went to St. Lawrence grade school and was the best player on the 1996 Jeff basketball team that went to the final four. Chris Deno was Catholic and played football for Harrison on the 1989 and 1990 teams. Jason Sowders went to St. Lawrence and played football for Jeff in 1991 and 1992. He was their best D player. These are just some of the names off the top of my head.

People leave p/p education much more often for public pastures than I think folks realize. I've posted a few times on the p/p "break" points in education. A break during high school is less likely than the other break points ... after K/1st, after 2nd/3rd grade, after 6th/7th grade, and after 8th grade ... but it does happen and is more common than folks might think. In my experience, the flow OUT of p/p to public often nets out in favor of the public schools in terms of bodies. The main reason that you don't hear about it as often is that, in the scheme of things you typically only hear about it with sports, but I can almost say that for every one student-athlete that you hear that leaves a p/p in high school, I bet there are at least another 3-4 non-athletes that you don't hear about.
I know Lafayette Jeff can thank the Catholics for a lot of their success in sports over the years. When Jeff went 10-0 in 1981 and 1982, the best player on those teams was Catholic. There is a list a mile long of Catholics playing sports at Jeff.

I don't think this should happen but I think a lot of people would agree with all P/P schools having to be either 3A or 5A, then implementing the success factor.
That would solve 99% of the groping.
That's very interesting!

Fair share…seriously? If we received the same number of kids from those areas as we did last year every year for the next 20 years we wouldn’t even approach the number quality student athletes our local P&P friends have gleaned from local corporations in my day. But that doesn’t bother me…transfers aren’t an issue to me…neither is “recruiting”. The problem is enrollment alone doesn’t work when comparing grossly dissimilar student populations. We all know it…but beating up year after year on schools with less homogeneous student populations is fun isn’t it, intoxicating, even addicting. Why are some of you frightened of competing on an even playing field? If the paying field was even we wouldn’t have these punitive systems like the success factor. Eventually one convinces oneself of all kinds of reasons for the success other than the truth. P&Ps win a disproportionate amount of championships than their number of state association schools would indicate in basically every state in the union. That’s why states try to find equitable ways to offset the difference in student population types as opposed to enrollment alone. No reasonably intelligent person believes enrollment alone is fair. Even privately educated ones.
What do you want to happen? Have all the p/p's kicked out the Ihsaa? Move all of them up to 5a and 6a? What do you think would be fair?

Yes...I know the history.. pop graduated WL May 43... was involved w opening LCC....
Wow! You sure do know the history. I am not going to say any more about it. My uncle was in the LCC class of 59. Went two years to Jeff and two years to LCC

IND is past alot worse than that... least I'd like to think so...
Of course they aren't going to do that, but that is what some people want.

I got him making light of it... However: It's gone on since day one.... "They" r well aware it's been n issue... Since Day 1 "They" have designed a Systemic System that perpetuates it. I don't believe "They r that Ignorant" It's way past time to Fix it.....
They are going to fix it! They are going to move all the p/p's to 6a and if they win in 6a they will kick them out of the Ihsaa just like they did to Cathedral and other Catholic schools until 1942.

They did pick up a state title in 1999 and then promptly turned around and had a pair of back-to-back 5-5 seasons.
I think what folks don't realize is that, prior to LCC starting their youth program, LCC overall win percentage was a bit under 54%. In the time that the first group of youth players were seniors to this year, that percentage is a bit over 71%.
What year did LCC start their youth program? I know you were involved with the youth program for years and did a great job.

LCC was 91-133 over that time. 7 winning seasons, 14 losing seasons, and one tied season ... one sectional title in 1989.
Thanks! I didn't want to look up the numbers. One of the winning seasons was 1987 when LCC went 7-4 and lost 42-0 in the sectional to Frontier. I guess the advantages for LCC didn't start until 2009.

Why don't these same advantages show up in other sports? NP routinely beats MD in basketball and baseball. Or are there only "advantages" in football? I use NP as an example because they have similar enrollments and very similar kids. they have kids in their hallways right now that went to westside catholic feeder schools and are now at NP. In some cases there are siblings at each school. With all these advantages, wouldn't the parents opt for MD? I realize that MD has a different enrollment from some other 2A schools. But the teams they have beaten to win sectional, regional and semi state are not significantly different.
What year did these advantages start? LCC didn't win anything in football from 1977-1998. They had one good team during that time. I never heard anyone say anything about advantages in the 1970's and 1980's.

Really? To me, excellence is never boring.
It's only boring to some people because their team didn't win. Nobody ever says anything about Center Grove going for their 3rd in a row.

When ther were 3 classes this prob didn't exist.... the public numbers buried the PPs ... but That wasn't good enuff..... Peeps want their cake and eat it too......
Let's go back to 3 classes. That would be better than what we have now. Some people are never going to be happy until the p/p's don't win anymore.

Here's the topic Lysander proposed. Can the Success Factor be improved by Gerrymandering Sectionals?
They should get rid of the success factor. It's a big mess, and some of the P/P's are still able to win.

I agree we should remove the success factorAnd stop handing out fake state championships
I don't like the success factor. Everyone seems to be in the wrong class.

Just stop. No moral victories at this stage but Carroll has noting to lose or prove to anyone at this point.
They beat the undefeated HCC (best conference in the state) champions last night and have done something no other Fort Wayne area school has done in the 6A era.
BTF knows I don't mean anything by that. I think I gave him a hard time about this before. I know he wants someone from Fort Wayne to win really bad, and there is nothing wrong with that. 🙂

Is Andrean not the favorite?
What about the most Northern team in the state, Chatard
Andrean is the favorite, but its hard to beat the same team 2 years in a row at state. Chatard is in the north, but they are in Indy.

Lol, didn't learn anything last night?
You better hope Carroll wins next week because they might be the only team north of Indy that does win. The game last night reminds me of 2015 when Penn beat Carmel 16-10 and then lost to Center Grove 28-16. Carroll has never been to state and Center Grove is there every year, that might make a difference. Carroll could be like a deer in the headlights. It's hard to beat Center Grove because of the way they play.

What are some of the worst weather games in Indiana high school football history? It will be about 24 degrees at game time at WL tonight. I can't remember anything this cold at game time for an Indiana high school football game since 1991.

Judson still has natural turf, correct? Frozen turf can neutralize an advantage in team speed. Forecast calls for game time temperature in the low 20s, with wind chills in the single digits for most of the game due to a 12-13 mph breeze.
I don’t know what the line is, but I’ll take the under.
I know you have been to a lot of high school games through the years. Is this going to be one of the top 10 coldest games ever for an Indiana high school football game? 24 degrees at WL when the game starts.

Have Memorial and Linton every played in any of the big three sports -- football, basketball, or baseball?
Memorial and Linton have never played in Football. Memorial did play Cathedral in the 1920's and 30's.
Congrats!! And breaking news!!

I thought of some more Catholics that ended up at Jeff or Harrison.
Larry Larrabee - Assistant basketball coach at Jeff in the 1980's. His son Mike also played basketball at Jeff in the late 1980's.
Tim Rody - Played football at Jeff 1981-1982.
The Yeoman twins - Basketball stars on the Harrison girls team 1985-1986.
Vince and Andrew Harris- Played football at Jeff in the 1990's.
Here are some other names. I don't know if they played sports, but they were Catholic and went to Jeff.
Vince Larrabee
Jennifer Dillard
Mike Petgen
Rebecca Knoy
Brian Clark
Autumn Sowders
I am sure I will think of more names later.
