I wanted to say this but haven't had time.  My son is a Junior football player on the current team.  We played the VL guys in the same class (2024) no less than 8 times from 3rd through 8th grade (I think we had the edge on wins in that time but just barely).  During that time we got to know their staff/Dads really well.  I can tell you that they remind me a lot of us when we started our stuff in the TYFL in 2001.  They are good men doing the work of God if you ask me, cultivating young men to be great leaders, husbands and fathers.  We formed a competitive bond and they still communicate with me to this day. The fruit of their labor is paying off.  Coach Salters should be grateful for them and I am sure he is.  Look for good things from VL in the coming years.

I'd concur with all of this.  Those that have been around me since the sectional realignments came out know I've not written off VL for a second this year, for all the reasons you just stated.  I felt that Sectional 30 was going to feature GS/VL at some point, no matter the draw.  They grind out a tough regular season schedule, have great athletes, excellent coaches, supportive community, nice feeder system, etc.  I thought (hoped) Friday would be a 2-, maybe 3-score affair and, technically, I wasn't wrong.

Tangentially, with the score being what it was and still being where I'd expected/hoped, it sort of reminds me of a quote from Joe Carter describing Toronto's game 4 World Series win over Philly in 1993.  Down 5 at the end of 7 innings, the Jays put up 6 in the 8th and ended up winning 15-14 in an overall wild game.  He said (paraphrasing here), "They say great teams win those one-run ballgames.  Well, this was a one-run ballgame."

Yes, I just compared a 1990s MLB WS game to an Indiana 3A first round sectional HS football game.  Sue me. 😂

Owen Valley was 1-9 just 3 years ago and 0-10 just 4 years ago. I think their current schedule is a reflection of what they were. I heard the new HC at OV Robbie Gibson has already told the administration that he wants Cloverdale and Eastern Green off the schedule and they honored it. He is trying to beef up the non-conference schedule.

I would agree that their current schedule is indicative of who they were, not who they are, as well.  Changing that kind of thing takes time and a lot of planning.  It sounds like Coach Gibson has the support of the admin behind him, which can help to go a long, long way towards a program's success.  I suspect with this monumental turnaround in the program, the community is gravitating back as well.  I'm wishing OV the best moving forward.  ...next year.  Their season hopefully ends in three days. 😁

You're right, my mistake, this was discussed already in the other thread. 3 big plays by Vincennes accounted for all 600 yards. Two of which were mistakes by the officials and the third the lights from the stadium got in GS players eyes. Somehow they managed to score 3 more TDs (unless my math is off).

    My apologies.

Honestly, VL's reported yardage was nothing more than an intentional clerical fudging.  It was actually tabulated well into the red, and GS loaned Vincennes 42 points out of their 105-0 victory so that folks wouldn't think they were running up the score, resulting in a nation-wide "cancelation" of the rest of GS's season by the non-competitive woke crowd.

I should know, I was there.

That natural grass field looks to be in great shape. I've been told here on the GID that comes playoff time all grass fields are practically unplayable morasses.

Not to be argumentative, I mean I like a good grass field as much as the next guy, but when was the last time you saw any measurable precipitation? Hard to tear up grassy concrete.

I haven’t had the chance to watch them this year, but with them having such a weak schedule and getting blown out badly by the only solid team they’ve played (East Central is great), I can’t put them in that conversation.

All I know of them is what a great game they played at the Jewell last year. They did have Yoon and Patel (I think I have those names right) graduate, but then again GS may have had a couple guys graduate, too.   😉

The boys on the field have zero control of who they play, but they are winning when it is expected of them. It can definitely be tricky to directly correlate regular season play/record with post-season potential. And getting hot at the right time can be all that it takes to make a big run.

All that said, I'd put them in the periphery of the conversation, but still in it.

I’ve been following along all the different threads tonight and continue to read your messages making excuses and trying to belittle what sounds like an incredible game by both teams. Just go drink the crystal clear waters in Gibson county and enjoy the opportunity to play another week.

With 3-4 players out with flu, I picked Boonville to beat Harrison. We will see how Boonville does against Reitz. And I'll be rooting for them without question. But how does GS give up 42 and 600 yds against 7th place SIAC team?

How does no one in the SIAC beat the 7th place team in the SIAC by more than 20 points, yet a PAC did?

How does the #1 team in the SIAC only beat the 7th place team by 3?

    So many ponderables.

Yeah, it could mean that or it could be a despicable act that is intended to be degrading.  🤷‍♂️

I always have to ask my son what these things mean....in context, I got a pretty good idea on this one.

I thought this game would be close, after this, it may be a blow out.  Pun intended?

Yeah, I'm fairly confident I can get this one without consulting the urban dictionary.

Anytime I ask my son something like that I usually get, "If you needed to know, you'd already know." Brutal.

I like a good pun now and again. Nice JOB. Usually only get them for my birthday anymore...

Last week Merrillville pulled all of their starters in the regular season finale and inexplicitly lost to Chesterton.

Is this anecdotal via GID alter egos, or is there evidence this occurred before the game was already out of hand at 35-10?  At least from what I can tell on Digital Scout, Merrillville's starting QB and RB (and at least a couple of the WR's, a bit hard to tell if it was all of them) were still in until at least their second to last drive, which ended with less than 5 minutes left in the game.

Now, was there a mass defensive substitution early in the game? Maybe. Seems off to pull out all the D but leave the starting O in.  Or did everyone on offense except most of the starting skills get subbed out on offense?  Also possible. But if you're leaving your starting QB/RB in to get waylaid behind a JV, I mean a frosh offensive line before heading into the playoffs, you should maybe think about your game planning a bit better.

But I do have it on good authority that Merrillville's Junior Football League Flag Football kids got some quality reps in that contest though.  From TWO completely different people that support two different teams and aren't actually the same person replying to themselves in threads to perpetuate their own exaggerations and lies.

Self-admitted stat nerd so decided to take a look at/rank all 48 sectional according to Sagarin.  Simply averaged the field's overall rating and divided by the number of teams in each sectional.  Interesting to see the in-class breakdown and 1-48.

Interesting. What happens to the list if you use the median?  I'm guessing more often than not they'll be similar, but curious if there are any outliers that jump or drop quite a bit using that method.

It's been awhile, but since my AD is on vacation and won't chastise me for posting what I think here here is my thought.

We should take our sectionals and play a round robin.  Then seed the sectional from that data.  The last games of the season would be against a natural rival who lives close by.  I would love to see our Rockies take on the Glenn Falcons or the CMA Eagles.  Both of those game make more sense than the current games against East Noble and Kokomo.

Each school still gets that one opponent who they love to hate or just have someone who isn't too far away and save the kids a trip.

But more importantly you get true seedings for the sectional.  After that play the rest of the rest of the tournament on the home field of the team who plays the least number of away games as we currently do.  Or if you want to use a computer ranking then let the sags determine the home team.

Having coaches vote is not the answer.  I agree with FootballKing16 in that the bias would creep in and not give a best case seeding.

Let's be honest, the conference championships are a joke because in most cases the same teams win them every year.  So drop conferences and play a round robin in each sectional to seed the tourney.  How much fun would that be?

A very novel idea, to be sure. A snowball's chance in Hades of happening, but I applaud the originality (I think? At least I don't think I've ever heard of such a system).

At first I thought you meant something like a typical  or even abbreviated regular season followed by a pool play type of scenario to seed the overall tournament. Again, novel, and fun to think about and discuss. But I've a better chance of shacking up with upcoming divorcee Giselle Brady than this being implemented.

Appreciate the idea and you can throwing it out there tho! Sure beats the crap outta me just scratchin my butt and hoping everything figures itself out. Fodder for discussion if good.

Not necessarily. Are you referring to this play by the Packers in 2016? I believe this play resulted in an NFL rule changes. I scanned through the NFL rule book but didn't see anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't there somewhere. The NFHS rule was changed about the same time. This would still result in a free kick out of bounds foul against the kicking team in NCAA.

The video isn't available to me, but I'm 99% sure we're talking about the same play. Or at least something that is close enough for horseshoes. Kicked near the sideline, gets OOB, lays down and reaches the ball. I assumed this was still the rule.

Frankly, I sorta liked it. Gaming the rules, smart stuff. But I do get why you wouldn't want to penalize the K for otherwise being legal.

    3. the stats above being I was there. Merrillville had 2 fumbles. 1int but the also had 3-4 Turnover on downs. I consider those turnovers. So that’s 6-7 turnovers right there

So are not conceding on 4 downs not turnovers? Because they didn’t convert on 4th down 3-4 times in that game.

    LMAO

No, no one in their right mind considers a TOD a turnover when talking about losing he ball or getting it from the other team.  Well except you, @Andrean4life, and yourself, @Piratefan101.  There were two turnovers b by Merrillville that game, period.

It sounds like you are a pretty cool step dad.  I'm one myself and I know it is a struggle sometimes to make those tough decisions.  That is admirable and obviously not something any of us here on the GID could ever refute.

Except... Cue Columbo: "Oh, just one more thing..."

I find two things that would additionally keep you from holding down that double agent spy job.  The first is neither you, nor your alter ego know when to use the word "their".  The second is the proclivity that you and your alter ego both have in ending paragraphs and posts without using punctuation, like this

Go ahead, look back.  I'll wait.

Anyway, I honestly don't know why I'm bothering to call you out about this, it really means nothing to me.  I just find it fascinating that someone would go to such lengths to perpetuate *there* [sic] own exaggeration, at best, or lie, at worst.  Fascinating.

Either way, I'm getting bored with this Columbo business, although I could probably take three minutes to refute this one if I put forth a modicum of effort:
