Just did some research on this guy and here’s what I found.

Luella High School Lions (Luella, GA - 45 minutes south of Atlanta)

    2010 (5A): 3-7

    2011 (5A): 4-6

    2012 (6A): 2-8

    2013 (6A): 5-6 *clinched playoffs*

    2014 (5A): 5-5

    2015 (5A): 4-6

    2016 (4A): 5-6 *clinched playoffs*

    - 28-44 (.389) record over seven seasons with two playoff appearances.

    - First coach in school history to clinch a playoff spot more than once.

Mount Vernon High School Bulldogs (Mount Vernon, WA - 1 hour north of Seattle)

    2017 (4A): 4-6

    2018 (4A): 8-3 *clinched playoffs*

    2019 (4A): 5-5 *clinched playoffs*

    - 17-14 (.548) record over three seasons with two playoff appearances.

-Ended the school’s 21-game losing streak to their rival. Went 3-0 against them during his tenure.

-First coach in school history to clinch back-to-back playoff appearances.

Totals: 45-58 (.437) record over ten seasons with four playoff appearances.

My takeaway is that this guy has a track record of taking over bad programs and finding some success with them. Whether he can do that long-term is a reasonable question as his coaching tenure has never exceeded seven years at a particular school. Nevertheless, the short-term results are there and I think this is an exciting hire for a school that is in a similar situation as Vasilchek’s previous two head coaching stops.

Looks like JC hired exactly what they needed. I hope he can turn that program around.

  2. I was researching the EG job and came across this old thread. Is it the same school board? I'm curious if because of the way things went down last time, it will cause some to still see this as a good ol boy situation and not apply.

Obviously things took a turn for the worst, but any insight on what the program currently looks like? Returning starters? Youth program? Numbers?

Agreed! These kind of lists always makes me wonder what would the GID look like in the mid-90s.

Jerry Brewer and Bob Clayton. Will they get bored winning against their competition and step up to coach an Indy school? No way do the up and coming coaches Mike Goebel and Reed May spend their careers at one school.

HS football coaches don’t think like fans (that’s a good thing) and always look for the next big thing.

I agree with the fact that not all coaches want to move on to the next "big thing". I agree that I personally enjoy seeing coaches stay at a place their entire career.

However, I don't see anything wrong with these lists. All they really do is give recognition to these coaches. Saying that they done such a fabulous job, that other schools may try to poach them.

One could come up with a list of guys who had success at one place. It also wouldn't be hard to come up with a list of guys who had success and then moved on to a larger school or a school that some may think is a better job.

In regards to Crawford county I read the aforementioned story and also checked John Harrell basketball site to see basketball record. I correlate basketball success to having athletes. I was shocked to see they went to the state championship recently. What’s the story behind that? Once in a lifetime talented class?

Another case where I think the right coach could make it a competitive program.

I can attest for Pike that 4, 5, and 7 are not relevant.

Administrative support is very present as is the community support.  7 is a direct result of 3 or vice versa.

Our current coach is working his tail off to fix the issues that do exist.  Numbers were higher than in years past this year.  We had a small senior class, but a large freshman class.  I cannot speak to what is coming up from the middle school though.

I've always been a believer that PC could be turned into a decent program. It would certainly take the right coach. I don't know him, but hopefully they have that guy now.

Ok....I'll be the guy to call out the elephant in the room.  Did the MIC just say....hey CG and Carmel....we hear you guys think you are too "culturally" uppity uppity to play with us?  Does this have racial and socioeconomic overtones....or at least perceived ones that the MIC perceives CG and Carmel have?

I think the shooting at the Carmel/BD game was the straw that broke the Camel's back. Carmel's fans weren't going to put up with that. I heard this rumor immediately  afterwards from credible sources.

Also, FC isn't going to the MIC.

Looks like South Warren is the KY 5A state champs after another dominant win

@vicvinegari see you laughed at my previous comment about wanting to see them play cathedral and being a contender. Any comments now? 5A vs 5A….indiana vs Kentucky…14-1 vs 14-1

I thought you were referring to GS, not SW.

So does Admin want to do the coaching?  I have little to no knowledge of the situation.

I have no idea what they are thinking, but for the kids sake, I hope they have some type of legitimate plan to turn that program around. However, with it posted as "Coaching Position Only", I highly doubt it.

Has Pike Central made any progress towards hiring a HC? Feels like dragging this on puts more strain on a already struggling program

In the post it says "coaching position only". The last coach wasn't in the building either. How can they expect to get many quality applicants, without a teaching position? I was interested in the position, but I can't move my family for a coaching stipend.

It's tough to win as it is. It's even tougher when you're at a school that's had so little success. It's impossible when a school with that history has an Admin doesn't care.

I truly feel sorry for the kids.

  10. Just to be clear, there is a teacher shortage in SOME subjects. Primarily Math, Science and Special Ed. I know several PE/Health, History and Elementary teachers who have struggled to find jobs.

Now to the coaching. There is never one answer to a question like this, but I believe the biggest problem is Admin. Willing to coach should help a teacher get a position. I actually feel like it hurts candidates more than it helps them. I've had multiple interviews and NEVER during those interviews have I been asked "Are you willing to coach?". It's not a factor for most admin. A lot of coaches do/are willing to coach multiple sports. Until Admin makes it a priority, a coaching shortage for a lot of corporations will only get worse.

I may need help to verify my answer to this.

A big problem getting teachers to coach is their teaching workload may be too big to handle all.

Example, in a big school, a math teacher may only be teaching Algebra all day.  The same teacher in a small school may be teaching Algebra, Geometry, Trig, and Calculus.  That's 4 different preps daily.  A lot to put on a plate.

Also, some coaches may get an extra prep during their season...That's shorts the department one class someone will have to cover.

For the experienced teacher, may not be a problem, but the new teacher...very difficult to master in the first couple of years.

I agree that some teaching positions make it more difficult, especially in the first year. Some of it depends on when they are hired. I was lucky enough to be hired in June. So all summer once practice was over, I went to school and worked on lesson plans.

Once school started, I obviously had to make adjustments, but I at least had a majority of lesson plans completed.

There are other things that can ease up the workload. HC's should realize this and give them less responsibilities. An athletic class, allows the coaches to spend more time focusing on teaching/lesson plans/ grading as opposed to going to weights after school during the off-season.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but at the end of the day, I think that teachers that want to teach ________ & coach _________, are willing to find a way to do it.

  12. There obviously isn't just one answer, but I think for SOME of these school's Admin either doesn't care or have given up.

First, make practice convenient for players. Have an athletic class. Students no longer have to find a way home after workouts, plus it allows them to work after school during the off-season.

Adding an activity bus would also increase participation. It would allow students a way home after practice in-season. This doesn't have to be difficult. Coaches can't drive players home after practice in their personal vehicles (at least aren't supposed to). So get them licensed to drive the activity bus and I'm sure a lot of coaches will be happy to take players home themselves.

Secondly is coaching. I feel a lot of these schools fall in one of three categories. Either they hire a coach and fire them after 2-3 years if they haven't turned the program around. Coaches need more time than that to turn these perennial losers. OR hire a coach that averages 2-3 wins a year and the Admin allows them to stick around for 10-15 years. apparently they aren't a good fit. OR they hire a coach that has been to 2-3 schools and failed. It honestly puzzles me. I assume they feel that they are hiring someone that "knows" how to run knows how to run a program, keeping the Admin from having to deal with any day to day headaches.

Admin should also take coaching into consideration when they are hiring teachers. It should factor in if a teacher is willing to coach one or multiple sports. Obviously not every teacher is going to be a coach, but I do feel like coaches are judged in a negative way by a lot of admin. They believe coaches just want to coach and don't care about teaching. Are there bad teachers that coach? Sure. Are there bad teachers that that don't coach? You bet! This would actually allow HC's to get talented assistants as opposed to having MAYBE a teacher or two, then hoping for lay coaches to fill out the rest of the staff. There are plenty of talented lay coaches, but work schedule keeps a lot of guys from coaching.

Once again there are multiple reasons why some programs struggle year after year, but I feel Admin is one of the main factors.

You might as well submit it all.  If you don't give it to us, someone else will.  We should share all film. IF you don't share it all, there are ways to get it all. Someone always owes someone else a favor or has a connection.  I don't think we had any less then 6 films of any opponent we played in the playoffs.  Share it all, Endzone and sideline.   May the team that prepares the best win!!!

This right here. There have been very few times when we haven't been able to get a film we want. Rivals of the team you're preparing for are also usually happy to give whatever they have. 😉

Will there be (or have there been) coaching changes for Fall 2021?

SS, MV, and WAS all have coaches going into year 2, if memory serves, but this off season has been quiet.

According to the list at the top of the page, Pike Central is open. However, I haven't seen anything official, nor has it been posted on the school corp website.
