Possibly the travel had a little bit of an effect for some of the players being off. 3 and a half hour drive (roughly) for a Friday night game. We see that sometimes when teams choose to make long travel on Friday nights here too. They also may not have fully expected the fight they were going to get from East who can be physical. Pick Central was very talented, they were when I watched them in 2017. The best talented teams I have seen were a couple of St. Edwards teams. In 2006 I made my way to the Herbstreit challenge one Saturday at Nippert University of Cincy. I watched 4 games that day in 2 different sessions.

Byrnes (South Carolina) vs Moeller (Cincy)

Lakeland (Florida) vs St. Xavier (Cincy)

Don Bosco Prep (New Jersey) vs Centerville (OH)

De La Salle (California) vs Elder (Cincy)

Some great games that day. The Lakeland team though HOLY COW I had never watched a team so talented prior or since. Featured Mike and Maurkice Pouncey, Chris Rainey, Ahmad Black, Jamar Taylor,  among others. St. X was pretty stout too. Lakeland ended up winning 25-22 in OT.

Luke Kuechly was the FS for for that St. X team.  Loads of NFL talent on that field.  I remember watching that game on TV.  On a side note Chris Sale (Red Sox ace) was also in the graduating class with the Pouncey twins, Rainey and co.  Pretty special group of Dreadnots.

  2. Recruiting is not an exact science, but for the most part, guys who can play get found.  Coaches get fired when players that they fail to recruit go on to do great things elsewhere.  In the climate that we live in today, if you want to be seen, there are great opportunities that exist to preform in front of coaches.  The mega camps that they hold in the summer at places like UIndy and Lindenwood are examples.  The College Exposure Showcase event this weekend at the Colt's facility is another.  There will be coaches from several levels, and several states in attendance to see 175+ young men showcase their skills.

The bottom line is that recruiting has evolved tremendously over the last 15 years.  Right now more than ever, if a player wants to be seen, they have every opportunity to do so.  From participating in camps and combines, to getting highlights out on social media, probably the least important part of recruiting is where you live and the size of the school you play at.

2009 RCHS vs Wheeler game.  Wheeler had some sick dudes on offense, was running up tempo,  a bunch of formations to keep you scrambling.

We got down 12 to start the game and clawed back to make it 14-12 at halftime then got the ball to start the 3rd quarter.  Held it the entire quarter and scored on 1st play of the 4th quarter.

    https://www.nwitimes.com/sports/high-school/indiana/rensselaer-plays-keep-away-from-wheeler-defends-title/article_82a8f050-71d5-5e55-bb1b-cdf66f8946cd.html

The drive featured 22 plays, all but one of them runs, three fourth-down conversions as well as another on third and 11. Bohannon tooted the ball 14 times on that possession alone.

This line from the attached article made me chuckle a bit!  Seems to be many more of these types of typos than in yesteryear.

This will have nothing to do with Friday's outcome , but Bart Curtis is 0-8 the last 8 meetings with Penn . Knowing how to beat Penn and actually doing it Must be two different things .

2-11 career wise I believe against Penn if you scroll back through the archives from Mishawaka to now.  Absolutely knowing and doing are two different things.   I guess my point should have been that he has beaten Penn and been very competitive with them at times when Penn was rolling everybody else on their schedule.   Penn is always going to be Penn. A record like this year is reflective of the Valpo squad and the two out of state powers Homewood  F and St X. and a rolling New Prairie team.  Beating Penn is a season maker for most schools in Northern Indiana.  Your point is noted and well-taken.   Good luck to both teams.

Just curious, how many of those 13 times has Coach Curtis had the better team on the field?

to get a fair representation of ranking the 2 divisions then you cannot count those games as true conference games.

Look at it this way:  The conference ADs got together, I am sure Principals were involved too, and said hey, its a pain to find non conference games, so instead of trying to find 4 non conference games, lets each help each other out and 2 teams will play these games and saves 2 other dates for other non conference games.

It would NOT be fun if the Hoosier went to a SAC Model of all 9 games being CONFERENCE Games.   For instance, if that was the case, RCHS would then lose out on playing our county Rival, Kankakee Valley week 1, lose the "Cracker Barrel" game that week as well and the travelling trophy would have been retired.  Nobody in our community nor KV community would want that.    Same with playing North Newton.  Our two schools played since the 60s and even before when it was just Morroco High School.   Only 20 minute trip and game the locals on both sides love to play.

WL would not been able to start a series with Lafayette Jeff

LCC would not been able to play Guerin for the Bishop's Cannon

Benton Central and Seeger long time series would of come to a halt.

    Just some examples.

I wish you would have explained this to the SIAC ADs!  Instead we went the lazy route and now have a nine game conference schedule.  We have effectively built a wall around our league and said, "We are better than all of you, see you in the playoffs."  If that is not the message than it is simply, ADs unwilling to recognize that playing out of league games is beneficial for everyone in the league.  Sorry for not feeling bad that it might be difficult once in a while to get games scheduled, but that is part of the job that they signed up for.

  6. You think the West Cannon Coyotes ever road on a yellow bus ... Doubt it!  This is proof that they charter planes in Texas!

On another note ... I had a roommate in college that moved from Thermopolis, WY to Crown Point.  She played basketball and their first road trip was to Merriville.  When she showed up to get on the bus with a pillow, she became a target for ridicule.  By that time, she laughed at the situation, but she said that the shortest trip they ever took in Wyoming was an hour and a half plus.

Sometimes I think that we are just looking for things to complain about.  Some people are not satisfied unless they are unhappy.

Perhaps in 2001, they would have been on the field together? I played some DL as a sophomore and caught Tichenor trying to cut back on a sweep... Paridean could've played a role on Friday Night Lights. I graduated in 2004, so 2003 was my senior year. HH and Boonville still played in the Coca-Cola Classic or whatever it was called at Castle at the time. All I remember is the free pizza!

Getting back to this decade... It's a shame the new PACs and SIAC can't do any Friday/Saturday crossovers ...  4 games in Evansville on Tuesday, 4 on Saturday (boo to soccer). So many of these out-of-conference games are no longer possible. I think Reitz and Jasper will return to the status which they once had. Boonville is improving ... Boonville-Bosse games always seemed to be some wars and I think they are natural opponents. I worry the new SIAC may further isolate SW Indiana football. Should be an interesting experiment.

Tichenor was younger than that.  I played for Boonville in that Coca-Cola Classic.  3 pm on a Saturday afternoon, 20,000 degrees, playing the defending state champs and get the ball inside the 20 yard line three times in the first half, but come away with no points. Only game in my life where I had cramping issues.

Ahh, how could I forget the HH grad. Gibson Southern at that time was always very tough at the JV levels, but couldn't translate it to varsity. Schemes were very basic like Mount Vernon used to do with 1 foot splits and just pound the ball.

Frank Tichenor was the scat back and one of the Parideans (Joey had already graduated, I believe) was a bruiser, but he went out early with an injury.

Tichenor transferred from Princeton and I am not sure that he ever played with Ace (Adam) Paridean.  I played against Coach O and Ace in the backfield as a senior at Boonville.

There was discussion on the old board. I remember reading a lot of banter about Steffanich's 2002 team with Paredain and the other RB. His name escapes me. Good skill players, but the line wasn't very good and the Titans couldn't pass.

Coach Obermeier was still the HC in 2002.
