Westfield also was without QB Maximus Webster for a lot of the second and third quarter, after taking a hit early second quarter. Backup Cole Ballard (Colt's GM's son) threw three of the four pics, the last two when Westfield was knocking on the door to score. Westfield also had a TD taken away via a penalty after Ballard ran it in. The next play he was knocked out with a knee injury, and Webster came back in.

When the defense is swarming and knocks out QB1, it's part of the game. Irish D was nasty as advertised. No matter who threw the picks, it happened from a gnarly defense (and especially front 7) getting after the QB early. Not sure who might score on them outside of Cincy LaSalle and CG.

  2. 7 plays inside the Irish 5 yard line to start the 4th quarter. Stonewalled. #11gold is the real deal. Wondering who scores on them. Maybe LaSalle? Maybe CG?

Lots of nerves this game especially in the first half. Couple O'Neill passes that could have been picked were not. Two missed bunnies from our all-world kicker. Delay of game at the 3yard line in Q2. Etc. We'll work out the offense and kicking.

Westfield played their hearts out. Fantastic game. Any game that is 0-0 at half is my kind of football.

I'll be there Friday night.  It should be a good one.  I don't know if the Irish will be better than last year, that's a tough task imho, but they should be pretty good.  A lot of inexperience at the skill possessions, except at WR, but no lack of talent.

Two senior WRs (Page, Hughes) two senior running backs (Mencer, Tazz), junior WR1 (Tibbs) and TE1 (Wooten), senior TE (Spellacy).

Soph QB Danny O'Neill is our only skill player without experience. That said, the only non-senior starters on either side are O'Neill and Power5 Junior Recruits (Gilbert, Tibbs, Wooten).

  4. I'm interested to see the battle of Ft. Wayne between Dwenger and Snider. Either could pose an issue to Zionsville in the North.

The Irish are praying to meet New Pal in the Regional. Extremely bad taste in our mouth from 2 years ago that wasn't rinsed out last year. First thing's first: injury free regular season and blindness to press clippings prove to be Cathedral's focus.

Love this group of 40 seniors. Been together since 3rd grade beating on each other in CYO. Could go down as one of Cathedral's finest classes if they take care of business.

Based on what is coming back and if all stay healthy, I believe:

     - Ben Davis goes 6-3 or 7-2 in the regular season and wins their Sectional, possibly the Regional.  Semi-State is the ceiling as CG has one more loaded team to walk the halls in Greenwood.  I like them at 8-4.

    - Carmel I believe finishes 7-2 and wins their Sectional and Regional before bowing out to CG in the Semi-State.  I believe they'll finish 10-3.

    - Center Grove I believe runs the table and finishes 14-0 as repeat 6A Champions.

    - Lawrence Central finishes at 1-9.

    - Lawrence North finishes at 3-6 in the regular season.

    - North Central finishes at 5-4 in the regular season and is a legit threat to win their Sectional.

    - Pike finishes 3-6 in the regular season.

    - Warren Central finishes 6-3 or 5-4 in the regular season.  I think they get the win against BD (barely) to put them at 6-3 and I see them winning their Sectional, though NC will be a serious challenger.  WC bows out in the Regional.

    Center Grove 14-0 👀👀

Who will the QB be for the Irish?

Our biggest question marks will remain at QB and RB. Rising highly acclaimed Danny O'Neill is the favorite to succeed Nathan McCahill. The backfield will likely be filled with senior scat-back Tazz Garrett and speedster Seth Mencer. The WR and TE core are incredibly deep. I believe we have 3 D1 TEs on the roster. 6'4" 240lb Junior Brennan Wooten will be our primary TE, but senior 6'6" Parker Spellacy and 6'5" Jack Davis will push for TE1 catches. All three could be MAC or better TEs, and I believe will go Big 5.

WR1 will most likely go to 6'3" junior Jaron Tibbs. Tibbs already has an offer from Iowa, but will likely also get some D1 offers in basketball with aforementioned TE classmate Jack Davis. The best slot receiver in the state is senior Michael Page. He is used and can catch the ball from anywhere Julian Edelman style. WR2 will most likely rotate between senior Daniel Hughes and Junior David Ayres.

The OLine is the strength of the offense boasting book-end D1 tackles in Owen Wood and Cooper Koers with an average line size of 6'3" 285lbs.

The defense returns just about everyone. Look for a D-line anchored by Junior 6'5" Kendrick Gilbert (Purdue, Iowa, Indiana) and senior Dom Seibal; a linebacker crew headlined by seniors D1 Jeffrey Utizinger, Jack Goheen, Kyle Coleman, and Huddy Miller; and the secondary led by senior Bryce Llewelyn and a cast of other senior depth.

And, let's not forget special teams. K and senior Ben Gomez will likely break most of the Cathedral records this season. And, he has range from 50 yards.

if I forgot anyone, please fill in the blanks. Already looking forward to some revenge games with New Pal in the tourney and CG in the finale. Our away game at Cincy LaSalle and a tough opening stretch with back to backs with Westfield and Brownsburg will test the Irish out of the gates.

  7. Cathedral has 42 seniors next year. The defense loses 2 senior DTs but rising 6'5" junior DT Kendrick Gilbert steps in with offers from Iowa and Indiana already. Schedule softens quite a bit as the Ohio GCL schools dropped us after changes to the Ohio State Tourney Qualifier and weighted divisional games. We'll still have one of the toughest schedules in the state, but lose St. X and Elder.

CATHEDRAL AND RONCALLI TO RESUME FOOTBALL RIVALRY

Joint release from Cathedral and Roncalli High Schools

Roncalli and Cathedral High Schools announced today that the two schools will resume their football rivalry in the fall of 2023. Roncalli will host the first matchup on October 6, 2023, with Cathedral serving as the host school the following season. Existing contracts with current opponents prevent the schools from playing prior to 2023.

My presumption with these comments is that Cathedral returns many key players? Or are we banking on "Cathedral being Cathedral" and just reloading?

Cathedral has 43 juniors on this team. Only 8 starters from this state championship team were seniors.

On offense, 6 of 7 lineman/TEs back including two Power 5 recruit OTs. Major depth at WR. Question mark at QB and RB of all places. And we are on the road at the GCL half the season in Cincy.

5A is ours to lose, but sophomore QB Danny O’Neill will have immense shoes to fill. And the schedule remains brutal = will need an injury free campaign.

  10. All the MIC schools are the New IPS. When Broad Ripple, Northwest, Arlington, etc shuttered, all their students sprawled to edges of Marion County. Regardless of their size, these MIC schools are going to struggle. The patience level you need for a successful program at these schools is much to handle for coaches wanting a “destination”.

I watched one of the most successful coaches in Indiana Wrestling, Jim Tonte, leave a 15 year Perry Meridian legacy to go to Warren, get a sizable pay raise, win a state title, and then vacate the role for Franklin in under 4 years.
