  1. The first battle of these two great Indiana programs. It will be Cathedral’s 161st new opponent.

Can emerging Mr. Football candidate Nathan McCahill match the touted Ron Powlus, Jr. In a QB shootout? Are there any other Penn defensive standouts that match up with any of the Irish skill players or O-line?

Excited to travel to Mishawaka! Irish Express will be there most likely in the student lot. Look for the Cathedral flag. With our storied rasslin’ heritage, I’ll expect Henry Wilk and Coach Harper to swing by for a Chick-Fil-A and a beverage pre-game. Go Irish!

    Cathedral fans,

Would you say this team has the ceiling to be as good as some of those mid 2000 teams? This team seems to be on an excellent path so far this year, and I remember many fans last year talking about how excited they were for this years team.

I’ve long contended the 2000 Cathedral offensive line was the best the state has ever had. They set the single season rushing record that held for 15 years with Otis Shannon. That O-line had 5 D1 players and 2 NFL guys on it: TE Mathias Kiwanuka (BC/NY Giants), LT Jeremy Trueblood (BC/Tampa Bay Bucs), LG Rufus Sanders (Western Kentucky), C Andrew Loehrer, RG Joe Byrne (Indiana St.), and RT Matt Hasbrook (Notre Dame). They also won 3 IHSAA titles in 4A.

This year’s line has very similar talent, but plenty left to prove. I believe we have two NFL potentials in TE Brennan Wooten and LT Owen Wood. But, I also know we have at least 2 other firm D1 guys in RG Chris Farah and RT Cooper Koers. And, the real beauty is these guys are all juniors.

This junior class is extremely special by our standards. They had the most insane freshmen schedule you could assemble and came out undefeated. Other than 1 TD victories at the Pit at Cincy Elder and a barnburner finale with Center Grove, they beat up the best teams in the Midwest. 38 juniors from that team are still part of this year’s Irish team. The future is bright.

  3. Another fantastic performance for the Irish. The defense started a little slow the first two series and much credit given to an enormous Carmel O-Line, but the D tightened up nicely. Zane Hill had some nice stops in the first half. No huge defensive standouts in my mind. It was a true 11 Gold experience.

Where do you begin offensively? The 3rd quarter breakout was as good of a performance in one quarter as I can remember. Cathedral took their first teams out with 10:20 in the 4th up 41-13. At that point, we had 557 total yards to Carmel’s 162. And, by the way, i absolutely love the Carmel statistician that tracks that real-time.

The jock from Sr. Roch, McCahill, proves that he is an all-around player. His passes are crisp and accurate, but his field presence is his biggest asset. Spreading the rock to 8 different receivers and using his feet when he had to. The real MVP and the growing story is the Offensive Line. The protection was fantastic and they wore down the Greyhounds. Even with OT Cooper Koers out for the last 1.5 quarters w cramps/ankle, they delivered amazimg holes for our very strong and quick RBs Jake Langdon and Seth “don’t call me Spencer” Mencer.

Also a shout out to kickers from both schools, all three kicks (2 from Carmel and 1 from CHS’s Ben Gomez) would have likely been good from 50 yards. 3 absolute accurate bombs by these boys.

Can’t wait to travel to Penn for the first meeting of these two storied programs. It will be Cathedral’s 161st new opponent. See you in South Bend.

  4. Cathedral is full schedule and in-person and has been since August 17th.

Also, as of today, August 28th, the 3234 Indiana deaths out of 6.7mm Hoosiers puts the death rate at 0.0004. Further, of these deaths, less than .01 percent are coded as Hoosiers under age 19.

  5. Last’s year 6A Champs vs. the Fighting Irish.

Can the Irish match the depth of the state’s biggest school? What are the match-ups? IndyStar is advocating for the Carmel D and their assault on Plainfield last week. Should be an interesting test to the Cathedral O-Line and Jake Langdon and the jock from St. Roch. Can they run the damn ball against the stout Greyhounds D? Or will the aerial game feed the fellas again. Who you defending, Greyhounds?

Irish Express will be in the lot by 5:30pm. Anyone from Carmel is welcome to come catch up before the game for some chicken and beverages. #cate #pendoski

  6. We’ll have the Irish Express in the parking lot by 5:30pm. Anyone from Westfield is welcome to stop by for a beverage. We love hanging out with the Home Team before games. Look for the Cathedral flag flying over the red bus. Absolutely thrilled for a small return to normality. Let’s have a great game!

    Go Irish!

Miss a week miss a lot.

Man.....spent the last week wading hip-deep in a grease pit working on several true, great American muscle cars (like any real red-blooded American should)..........working hard for a living....no Wawasee coupon-clipping.......or even Cathedral recruiting visits.

Summers always remind me when me and the Old Man in the 18-Wheeler were hauling real American steel to the Gary mills my Senior summer.  I’ll never forget hauling American steel through the week and on the weekends when I wet-sanded and painted my wife’s (wife-to-be, then) 1968 Nova with Imron airplane paint back in the day.  Frickin’ Imron paint was like titanium....until someone broadsided her at a stoplight.  Absolute TRUTH in this paragraph, btw.....no kidding....

She’s lasted a a fair bit longer than the paint....or the car.

Still.......wish we had the car too.

Chatard v. Northwood was a fun game last year.  Great hosts.  Think that game might still be on YouTube.

Seriously, as hardscrabble folk as me and the Old Lady might be (she’d never admit it, though), thank God my kids got some understanding at Chatard of a life earned vs. a life given.

They’d never got that at 56th and Emerson.

Just sayin’ .....as they all seem to say these days.

Funny. You're assuming I haven't already outworked you for your lifetime. As Drake would say, "started from the bottom, now we here."

Feel free to make as many personal digs as you want though. It won't ever change the fact that Chatard will always be the bridesmaid on the Northside.

Jeez,  IWG, do you take the little blue pills whenever you see the word “Chatard”?

It’s like you are responding to yourself.

I get it, though,........most of you wealthy antiquarians at Cathedral occasionally need a bit of an “assist”.  Good on you Irish for keeping on keeping on, though.

Excepting me, of course, we all need a bit of an occasional “lift”.

You’re wrong per your earlier self-responding post, of course...no shock there.  You belittled comparing the size of schools earlier as regards Chatard v. Cathedral (which in most years is twice as large as Chatard...despite recent declines in Cathedral student population....you guys need to switch some of that financial “need” dollars to regular students) yet you were happy to step out of 6A after you didn’t make the cut.

The reality here is that Cathedral can reach out and talk DIRECTLY to every individual archdiocese student and parent by phone and tell them they can be a star and win a State Ring at Cathedral (or, not mentioned during that phone call, simply be gold helmet fodder....).  Chatard can’t call anyone (about ANYTHING)....including their own Archdiocese kids.

That said, it would be hard for me to imagine that the rest of the state could dislike Cathedral more (as in “hate”) if they recognized Cathedral’s full advantages......

OK...Cathedral is 15-5 v. Chatard the last 20 years.  You were wrong (no surprise).

I'm thinking Chatard’s 10 State Championships the last 20 years vs Cathedral’s lesser number might have addled you.

So many excuses, Little Bro. I wouldn’t trade our state title numbers for your 3A title numbers ever. We both know if you had to go through Cathedral or Roncalli in half of those title runs, you wouldn’t have 1/3 of dem rings. It’s kinda like J/V state. You have the same access Cathedral does. You have half of the IndyWest Deanery on your roster this year. So, don’t poor mouth your Chatard Recruiting ability...

Hardly anyone saw this anyway.... all the old money is still working on their tans at lake Wawasee.   🤭

Actually brilliant. I wrote my original post standing waist-deep in the clear, blue, natural waters of Lake Wawa.  Hopefully CHS - Penn happens so we can pre-game at the Frog with all the “old money” dive bar Cathedral parents and fans in Syracuse.

Speaking of the Frog, I frequently bump into the Northwood coach. If Rona swipes the Penn - Cathedral game, my Amish friends are ready for the challenge. And the word in the street is Northwood is stacked this season.

OK, I’ll bite....add that this is an actual thread about football and not the whole Corona/politics BS.

I find it a bit funny that some here are actually thinking Chatard declines when last season they were ranked 6th ALL CLASSES  (That’s 1A-6A for the MENSA members) per Sagarin .  Sagarin’s Predictor ranking had them at 5th ALL CLASSES with only Carmel, Avon, New Pal and Brownsburg ranked ahead of them.

Chatard’s strength of schedule (SOS) ranking was Top 10 or 15 throughout the regular season but fell to 21st at season’s end largely due to 3A playoffs.  During the regular season, Chatard played an effectively “MIC-like“ overall schedule per comparative SOS rankings..  BTW, I followed the Sagarin SOS rankings throughout the regular season - it was well within the range of the MIC team’s SOS rankings pre-playoffs.

Somehow, neither Cathedral, Brebeuf, Guerin or Roncalli squeeeeeeeeezed ahead of Chatard as to Sagarin rankings last year....some weren’t even in the same solar system.

So before y’all declare Chatard dead and buried (while Chatard is “desperately” clutching those State-leading 14 State Championships in hand), I am quite honestly thinking Chatard (though roughly 1/2 the size of Cathedral....just to remind you folks...lest you forget) will offer even more challenge in the future as to being THE top Indy Metro Parochial (They REALLY should have beat Cathedral last year)

    1. Chatard will STILL be the North Indy Archdiocese school.  Say what you want about Hamilton County (Okay, I’ll say it..much of Hamilton County can be a bit....errr, well....... “soft”).

    2. Chatard NOW actually has their own football facility for home games which only Roncalli has previously had to offer as an Archdiocesan school (that said, Roncalli football, these days, may well be too cisgender male for them moving forward....I’m expecting them to drop football...I’m hearing they have some great Riverdancers on the South side these days).

Pretty nice facility, for the record, at Chatard.  FYI - Cathedral still has NO home game facility....nope...none whatsoever.

    3. Chatard NOW throws the ball around just a tad (and Coach Doyle was a HS and College QB......add that Rob is a pretty d@mn smart dude) which means Chatard now ACTUALLY competes for Archdiocesan QBs and receivers (and by default gets an upgrade to safeties and defensive backs) which they really didn’t previously.

    4. Chatard is still arguably the best Archdiocesan  (and anywhere else for that matter) home for prospective college lineman to make their bones.  The Big’uns are looked at like Chris Hemsworth by EVERYBODY at Chatard....just keep the shirt tucked in.

    Truly, truly sexy dudes.

    5. Chatard still RUNS the ball like few teams do.  Running backs can make a name at Chatard.

    6. The apparent (and unsurprising) decision by Brebeuf to now focus on artistic swimming, gender studies and navel gazing means that even more actual football players will be available for a real Catholic school like Chatard (yeah, Cathedral too, unfortunately, even though they aren’t a Catholic parochial...life is yin and yang I guess).

I’m sure I am missing tons of new reasons but I think Chatard actually (without any decline by competitors) does nothing except becomes significantly better.

When you factor in the actual expected decline of Brebeuf and (further decline of) Roncalli as they both drill down hard and focus on their social justice street cred, Chatard (maybe Cathedral) does nothing except get better at playing football....as well as college and career relevant studies.

PS.....Again, Chatard is roughly 1/2 the size of Cathedral and a lot smaller than Roncalli.

Chatard is only about 100 students bigger than Ritter just to give some of you folks some perspective.

Lots of excuses here @Lysander. Since you are coronating Chatard as “the Northside P/P power“, don’t you think it would be wise to share the heads-up record between Cathedral and Chatard the last 20 years?

Also, when you strip out the Martin brothers from Chatard’s resume, you guys are pretty pedestrian with your linemen. The Irish have as many NFL lineman and have at least 1 more heading to the league next year (Alabama’s starting RG and CHS grad Emil Okifor). And, in my opinion, we have 2 more NFL prospects on this year’s incredibly stacked O-Line (Owen Wood, Junior Left Tackle) and Brenden Wooten (Sophomore TE phenom). Cathedral’s O-Line has to be the top in the state this year and only 1 senior on it. Keep an eye out.
