I wasn’t in favor of bringing in a transfer, but I’m not sure Notre Dame plays for the championship, or even makes the playoff, with Angeli. The receivers weren’t as good last year, and the offensive line was much better in the run game than in pass protection. Angeli was sacked on about 14 percent of his dropbacks and Leonard was sacked on about 5 percent of his. Not to mention that, while Angeli led a needed scoring drive against Penn State, we’re a lucky bounce away from that strip sack being PSU ball around the 50 with a little over a minute in the first half trailing 10-0.
None of that is to say Angeli is bad, clearly he’s not, but I think the staff was correct that he wasn’t going to be the right QB to get the most out of the offense last year.
