  1. I agree that in the past Linton has been very successful in keeping a featured running back under control. They took special pride in that but this Miner defense may not be up to the task. They'll certainly be challenged by the coaches this week. Hopefully, Linton's usual multi-back rushing attack can keep us in the game.
  2. The last time I was at Boonville for a football game was 75 years ago in 1945. That undefeated Miner team beat a strong Boonville team 20 - 6. Not sure but I think that was the only time Linton played at Boonville. I was a LHS freshman.
  3. The interest has dropped off a bit since the move to 2A. In the past there was excitement about how far the Miners would go in the playoffs. And for several years we made a good run. Now there's no serious talk of even winning the sectional. Another factor to consider, there is much excitement about the basketball team success with eight straight 20+ win seasons and two state final appearances. Up until nine or ten years ago basketball was an afterthought.
  4. Greene County Sports Network is still free at this point. One fair way to charge, if it could be worked out, is to charge a fee for viewers in the local area and allow it for free for viewers out of the area. They wouldn't be attending the game anyway. The Linton games have a lot of viewership from around the country. The live stream has been hurting attendance to some extent for years. I don't know how much. The school is aware of it but for the aforementioned out-of-town viewers, they have allowed it. That applies to all major sports at Linton.
  5. Maybe someday things will get back to normal but that may be too late for me, although I may have another season or two left in me. One year at a time. I'll soon be 89. (hey, that rhymes). I really do hope they get this mess cleared up so I can watch our girls basketball team go for two in a row this year. The boys team will be pretty good too. Two Div I commits on the starting five.
  6. Probably a bit of both and the fact that NV doesn't appear ready to make much of a challenge this week. Got word that no fans, except for player's family, allowed at the game this week also discourages me. I try to make sense of this color coded nonsense that makes that determination. Something about number of cases per 100K population in the county. Greene county is a large county with relatively few people. If some person gets the virus 30 miles away in eastern Greene county then we're screwed. Maybe there's more to it than that but it's too complicated for me. Anyway, as of today they at least get to play so I guess that's a plus. 😞
  7. I believe one of the injured seniors, Levi Grounds, played some last week. I haven't heard about Lannan's status for this week. Starting WB Padgett hasn't made an appearance yet. I think it's a family covid issue.
  8. Monrovia has a proud football tradition and that terrible season last year had to be a tough pill to swallow. From what I have heard, a multitude of things went wrong that contributed to the downfall. I don't know details but they had a new coach which, for whatever reasons, didn't work out. They now have a new coach who was on staff during the seasons you mentioned. Linton travels to Monrovia this evening for the JV game. I'm interested to see how that comes out. I'm also looking forward to watching the Miners in person this Friday (except for the scrimmage). I'm not traveling to the away games this year. I think the young Miner team may have turned a corner last week at Sullivan and realized they can actually compete and win games. As far as the SR game, Linton played well enough defensively to have made that score a little closer but the offensive mistakes cost them. No question, though, SR is better than Linton and so far in the series, they always have been. But one of these years... 🙂
  9. Pretty proud of the Miners in their OT win over Sullivan Friday night. The defense continued to play well and maybe the QB change gave the offense a little more spark. Kudos to senior QB Goodman for playing well at the wing position after being the starting QB. It was good to see Monrovia get the win over Edgewood after 8 straight lop-sided losses. That should give them a burst of confidence when they visit Linton Friday. Looking at the stats , it appears Monrovia, like Linton, doesn't have a passing game and also, .like Linton, doesn't have a kicker. Should be a good game. I think Linton wins it.
  10. Tre Goodman is the Linton QB, a senior 3 year starter. We may see soph Hunter Gennicks taking some snaps also. Drew Smith is a fullback and linebacker. Linton is also young...and we'll see. the broadcast options are answered below. I'll accept your score prediction because I don't have a clue.
  11. I think the Linton - Sullivan rivalry is the "oldest" rivalry in the the state but not as far as number of games played. The rivalry is second in that category. The first matchup between the two neighboring schools was in 1904. they missed nine years from 1911 to 1920, '21, and '23 to '25. This year marks the 95th consecutive game beginning with 1926. This year brings the total number of games between the rivals to 104 and, believe it or not, the series stands at Linton 51 - Sullivan 51 and two ties. GO MINERS !!! I've seen most all of the games in the last 80 years. I'll be watching on the TV this time. Biggest thrill. 22 -0 win at Sportland field at Sullivan in 1945 after a 13 game losing streak to the Arrows. Oh, yes. Until the playoff system started, the game was an annual Armistice day (now Veterans day) afternoon game on November 11 to close the season.
  12. I'm wondering if Harrell didn't get the score turned around on his prediction. Sullivan is 15 points better on the Sagaran rankings and John has Linton winning by 18. Something doesn't look right there but I would surely take that score.
  13. As I sat on the sidelines at Roy Williams field watching the Linton Miners practice last evening It occurred to me that I was starting my tenth decade of watching my Miners practice and play on that hallowed piece of turf. As a small boy in the 1930's I lived near Oliphant Field as it was then known and spent nearly all of my time at the field during football season. The Linton field was named after Elmer Oliphant, Linton's most famous sports graduate. Although his memory has faded many of his national football records still stand at Purdue and West point. I suggest you Google Elmer Oliphant and read for yourselves. But I badly digress. That's the way with us old-timers. I know I shouldn't blow my own horn as they say. But I'm still playing my trumpet and I first played in the marching band on that field 76 years ago in 1944. Anyway, I've watched Linton Miner football in every decade from the 1930's up until now, the 1020's. I've seen some exhilarating highs and some horrible lows and everything in between. I've seen practices this season and the scrimmage last week so this season is in the books. I won't be traveling to Southridge this evening although I'll be watching on my big screen via the Greene County Sports Network. I hate to not be there. I rarely miss a game but these are unusual times. The verdict is still out on this year's Miner team as it is with most teams before the first game. We've got some good-looking young kids that lack varsity experience. I know Linton has a great coaching staff that has been together for many years. If the miners take their lumps tonight at Southridge, that'll just be a step in getting better. Now about that ten decades, if anyone can tie that I'd like to hear abut it. If anyone can beat that, I'd sure like to meet the guy (or gal) :-).
  14. I know the streaming guy said blood on the jersey but it actually was a badly torn jersey that necessitated the change.
  15. You did see three QB's but not as you thought. Goodman had a jersey change to No 22 which was confusing. Goodman is the starter but you'll see a lot of soph Hunter Gennicks as well. Gennicks seems to be the QB of the future but you also saw freshmen Ty Boyd #9 take a couple of snaps with the varsity and ran the JV series. He's a big kid, 6' 190 and looks good. Last year's 8th grade QB and now the JV QB. Junior Drew Smith was the eighth grade QB and JV backup to Goodman but now is a bruising 6' 2" 215 lb WB/FB/LB He had two impressive TD runs Saturday night. Personally, after seeing the Miners' personnel Saturday evening, I've gone from semi-despair to semi-confident. 🙂
  16. The young Miner team looked very good in the scrimmage both offensively and defensively. Five or six running backs showed hard running and produced good yardage plays behind the OL. However, as usual, the Linton passing game was nothing to brag about. Bosse also has a young team and they actually didn't show much resistance to the Miners on either side of the ball. A much better indication of the Miner future success will come Friday night at Southridge. The JV looked very good in their set of downs both on the O and D. They followed that up with a 40 - 0 victory at Owen Valley last evening. Linton has only 5 seniors on the roster and two of them are currently on the injured list.
  17. I'm not sure what that means but, if so, it's a road less traveled. 🙂
  18. As you know, Linton is playing a much stronger schedule now than they played a few years ago. An inexperienced group could still post an impressive W/L record against the teams we were playing. Not many "show up and win" games on the schedule now.
  19. I don't know much. Of course we graduated 17 seniors from last year's team and that is lot for a small school. JV was pretty good last year so there will be some quality replacements. Two starters from last year have chosen not to come out. A three year starter on the defensive line and a two year starter at DB. All the backfield except the QB will be new. The top two receivers are also gone. So I really don't know what to expect for this year. Scrimmage at home against Bosse two weeks from tomorrow. First two games on the road at Southridge and Sullivan will answer some questions.
  20. Linton has to get good enough to win a 2A sectional before they can get in the "win it all" discussion.
  21. Thanks much. No cane but I'm a bit unsteady on the bleachers, especially without a handrail. We'll be hitting the road in about 15 minutes.
