I am a long-time coach and volunteer in the Wawasee community. Wawasee is not looking to get out of the conference. That rumor spread because of an agenda item in a Head Coaches meeting that happened to be on the same night as a School Board Meeting. In this day of instant communication options that news spread and quickly got out of hand. Full disclosure, I heard the news about the two meetings and thought it was a done deal myself, so I took time to meet with the Principal. I welcomed that opportunity and his willingness to set time aside for any community members to visit with him. Here's the truth. Our leadership is doing its due diligence on all things related to athletic performance at a time when our corporation is evaluating academics, enrollment, finances, etc. Enrollment numbers don't tell the whole story; you must include socioeconomics and participation rates. Our Principal and AD are handling this the right way; it's open and transparent, which is a huge departure from the way things ran here under the previous superintendent's reign. My heart and pride, and sense of tradition are tied to the NLC. I played three sports (well two, I sat in one - ha) in it and coached in it in 2 sports across 25 years. But when you look up the success, or lack thereof, across all programs historically, it is not a pretty picture. This is an issue I have wanted to help address for more than a decade. Finally, it is being discussed. I want to know why we lose coaches in all sports at an alarming rate, why we are declining in enrollment, why kids don't participate in extracurriculars at a higher rate, why kids quit, etc. I have my opinions and want to hear what others in our community have to say. Right now, the loudest voices on either side of the issue are not current stakeholders. There are tons of alums who are quick to spout, "When I played ________," who in fact did not play and are sorely mistaken about their teams' success rates if they did.

I hated reading this news yesterday but was not surprised. Top-notch group of folks and I am disappointed for the kids who won't be featured on the Game of Week. Too many streaming options for folks to watch games on Fridays in real time now, so I am sure selling the ads to make this go got to be a bigger and bigger job.

I'd reconsider your approach here if you'd like to keep coaching. I've coached at both places being mentioned. Most recently at the school where you allege there were 3 IHSAA write-ups. This forum is the first place I have heard mention of these complaints. So, one of two things is true here. The AD didn't do his job and address it with this staff - and given the level of enmity he had for us I find that unlikely. Or, the complaints never happened. I honestly can't say which. But I will ask if you've ever seen that particular AD work the officials and table help in the sport he has coached. Actions speak volumes. And I will let my sideline/dugout demeanor over my 2-1/2 decades of coaching speak for itself. I care only about what my former players have to say about me. James Banksof Ben Davis when I was still doing radio. I was shocked that it was on offense when they rested him because of his playmaking abilities on D and in the return game. Wow. Played alongside Scot McDowell at Wawasee. Dude could change a game all by himself. But finding ways to contain Bronson Yoder as an opposing NLC coach was a bi&^%.

When it works we love it. But, week in and week out we have glitches. It's great to show kids on the iPad what happened, what they did, etc. as soon as they come off the field and to teach at halftime. Our frustration is we spend a lot of time each week rebooting, reconnecting, etc. to keep things running.

The solution isn't necessarily eliminating the 3 point stance. But kids don't need to be playing tackle football as young as pop warner allows or encourages. USA Football introduced a great model the Northern Indiana Youth Football League uses for 8U called Rookie Tackle. I think 10U, or even 12U, is where kids ought to begin playing tackle football as we know it.
