Would a child get threatened with arrest for missing the first 90 minutes of a physical school day?

Of course not.  That should be obvious from the "three separate occasions" part of the law if you bothered reading it.  The "90 minutes" part of the article is just a quote from a overreacting parent.

Do you even bother reading the articles you post?  Again, this article has nothing to do with science or covid.

"The law says any kid who misses three full days of school or is tardy for a 30-minute class period on three separate occasions can face jail time.

The policy was obviously intended to cover unexcused absences for in-person education, but the district apparently intends to apply it to virtual education as well."

Surely this will be on Jasper's channel...Southridge is the only Dubois county team left playing.

The Jasper feed on ihsaatv is run by JHS media.  The channel 18 broadcast is always tape delayed.  If there is a live feed it will not likely be either of those two broadcasts.

Why doesn't SR (or every school for that matter) run their own feed through ihsaatv?  If it is a equipment issue I'm guessing they could find some available for rent on short notice.  A laptop, camera, and dependable connection should do it.

Maybe your right - technically they didn't start with "mandates"......

    https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/10/it-s-been-so-so-surreal-critics-sweden-s-lax-pandemic-policies-face-fierce-backlash

Sweden’s approach to the coronavirus pandemic is out of step with much of the world. The government never ordered a “shutdown” and kept day care centers and primary schools open. While cities worldwide turned into ghost towns, Swedes could be seen chatting in cafés and working out at the gym. The contrast evoked both admiration and alarm in other countries, with journalists and experts debating whether the strategy was brilliant—or whether Tegnell, its main architect, had lost the plot.

I suppose it depends on the difference between a mandate and a restriction.

    -----------------------

Scally said the report also sought to tackle the “myths” that Sweden had not imposed any restrictions to curb the spread of covid-19.

The report highlighted that on 17 March, Sweden moved to online learning only for all children 16 and over and university students, and did not return to face-to-face teaching until the middle of June. Schools for children under 16 stayed open, but have had small class sizes, social distancing, and hygiene measures put in place.

It also noted that Sweden has had other restrictions such as a ban on travel from outside the European Union (in place until November 2020), a ban on visiting retirement homes until October 2020, and a continuing ban on gatherings of more than 50 people.

School Threatens 12-Year-Old With Arrest for Allegedly Missing 90 Minutes of Zoom Class

    https://reason.com/2020/10/23/school-zoom-class-arrest-lafayette-mark-mastrov/

Government, and that it includes the public school system, will take any opening it can to insert itself into the private lives of citizens.

To be fair this instance has nothing to do with science or covid.

    Brings up an interesting question.

If memory serves correctly an athlete could play in 3 games and still red shirt. Does that change this year with the decrease in the schedule?

All athletes have been granted an extra year of eligibility due to Covid.

  7. In Sagarin the SIAC finished +24 in the non-conference games.  (Bosse was +2...yippee)  That is a +90 point swing vs expected results.  The change in ratings for North (who was idle and played all SIAC teams) should tell us how undervalued the SIAC was during the season.

What is your solution then for the state of Indiana, whom the CDC has recently stated "is going in the wrong direction"?  Shut virtually everything down again?

Unrealistically I would remove all mandates and let people do as they wish.  This would result in a health care disaster this winter and most directly harm those that choose to downplay the severity of this pandemic or act like it doesn't exist.  I am fortunate enough to avoid high risk behavior and would benefit from weeding out the stupid.

Realistically I encourage targeted restrictions county by county based on hospital/health care stress.  Restrictions means limitations on crowd size and mask mandates.  As our understanding of COVID transmission improves I would adjust those restrictions accordingly, different rules for indoor vs outdoor etc... Most importantly I would keep politics out of that decision making.  I would also encourage a massive information campaign to target misinformation on social media.

  9. Sorry.  NASA says humans cause global warming.

"...solar irradiance changes cannot plausibly account for more than 10 percent of the 20th century’s warming."  NASA quote.

The Calpreps ratings show the problems with the closed conference, in terms of computer ratings.

    http://calpreps.com/2020/ratings/Indiana_league.htm

    Scroll down to Southern Indiana

Notice the ratings mirror exactly the final standings, with the exception of Castle being slightly ahead of Memorial.  Since their game with 0-9 Bosse was not played, Castle actually has the highest schedule strength rating and the best Opponents W-L record.  Central has the weakest schedule, while Bosse has the same as Castle (since they couldn't play themselves either.)

I'm not sure if this week - Lincoln, Mater Dei, Memorial, and Bosse will be enough to add some connections in any rating system.  But by week 2 when Central/Jasper play Boonville and the 5A teams play it will hopefully be enough.  If Lincoln and Mater Dei can advance to their respective finals as well (2 wins vs out of conference) then things will hopefully normalize.

The highest rated team in a closed conference will always have the weakest schedule and the worst team will always have the toughest.  The Castle/Bosse cancellation throws this year out of balance.

Will the 6 games outside the conference Friday be enough to "connect" all the teams in the SIAC for Sagarin?

If I understand the system correctly then just one non-conference game will connect the conference.  Castle and North don't play so there are just four connecting games this weekend (MD, Mem, VL, Bosse).  Those games will have an oversized influence on the entire conference's rating.  Future nonconference games will help normalize the ratings.

Can only be last year's ratings?

    Yes.

Winner of Jasper/ Central will go up about 20 rating points.

Though that is reasonable, this game will have little impact on the winners sagarin rating as it is just another SIAC game.  Same with Reitz/Harrison.  The loser of Jasper/Central will likely go up or down just as much as the winner does.  (Should Jasper lose by less then 12 they should go up more then Central does.)  The non-conference games will determine how much all teams in the SIAC move up or down.  My rough math shows Mem, MD, Bosse, and VL as a combined 66 point underdogs.  Should they collectively outperform or under-perform that number the entire conference will go up or down.  Yes, the statewide respect of the entire SIAC may be determined by weather or not Bosse can cover a 51 point spread.
