  1. A few years ago, the National Federation added the following to the rule book: “A state association may create instant-replay procedures that permit game or replay officials to use a replay monitor during state postseason contests to determine if a decision by the on-field game officials is incorrect.” So, it’s up to the IHSAA. At present, the IHSAA is firmly against the use of replay.
  2. MATCHUP neutral field [2023] Washington (Massillon, OH) 21 (60%), [2023] Archbishop Hoban (Akron, OH) 17 (40%) Just for comparison purposes, St. Ed’s beat Hoban 14-7 in Akron. Massillon Washington gave the Eagles their only loss of the season 15-13 in Massillon. The Eagles starting QB sat that one out with a knee injury sustained the previous week at Elder.
  3. And we haven’t even discusses the subject of capital improvements in public school facilities … and how it also adds to the local tac burden.
  4. A travesty? Sounds like for every kid the State uses vouchers on, Mr. Taxpayer’s burden is lessened. You ought to be championing the use of vouchers. Or you can look at it this way: if vouchers were eliminated, every kid who goes to a public school who would have gone to a p/p under the voucher program increases the tax burden.
  5. First off, be aware that the distance penalty for any foul can be declined by the offended team. I don’t recall ever seeing a high school team do this on a punt. I’ve seen it many times on a kick try, most recently in the New Prairie @ Kankakee Valley game in the sectional this past season.
  6. I do not understand the mentality of “recruit the best high school quarterback we can get,” but then surf the transfer portal for a new, veteran QB every year.
  7. Third straight year for this matchup. Let’s hope the outcome is the same this year. As always, it’s a great day to be an Eagle.
  8. Man, would this guy look good in a Bears uniform. What are the odds he actually plays in the bowl game? https://www.on3.com/teams/notre-dame-fighting-irish/news/notre-dame-football-joe-alt-outland-trophy-finalist-fighting-irish-offensive-line/ Notre Dame left tackle Joe Alt named one of three Outland Trophy finalists Tuesday was confirmation of what we all already know. Notre Dame junior left tackle Joe Altis one of the best linemen in college football. Alt was named one of three finalists for the Outland Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation’s best linemen on offense or defense. The other nominees, selected by the All-America Committee of the Football Writers Association of America, are Texas defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat and Kansas State guard Cooper Beebe. A winner will be chosen at the Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 8. The show will be televised on ESPN starting at 7 p.m. ET. Notre Dame has had three previous winners of the Outland Trophy; defensive end Ross Browner (1976), guard Bill Fischer (1948) and tackle George Connor (1946). Connor was the very first recipient of the coveted award. There have been many great linemen to come through Notre Dame, especially on the offensive side of the ball in recent years, but none of them have stood with the trophy at the end of the year. Alt has a very good case to be the first to do so in a very long time. Alt’s season-long Pro Football Focus grade of 90.4 is the best in the FBS when accounting for a snap minimum. Of every FBS tackle who met the threshold, none of them came close to Alt’s score. Oregon State’s Taliese Fuaga came in second with a mark of 86.9. Alt is regarded as a surefire top-10 NFL Draft pick per most of the reputable draft coverage outlets. He’s got all the physical tools at 6-8, 322 pounds. Ever since he took over as Notre Dame’s starter at left tackle midway through the 2021 season he has been the most consistent, durable and downright productive player the Irish have had along the offensive line the last two seasons. It’s very possible, perhaps even probable, Alt has played his last game in a Notre Dame uniform. Top 10 money is tough to pass up. Of course, Alt would likely be a top 10 pick in 2025, too, if he returned to Notre Dame for his senior season, stayed healthy and played up to the standard he set for himself over the last two and a half seasons. But monetarily, there is not much incentive to stay in South Bend. And he can always return to get that coveted Notre Dame degree.
  9. Ordinarily I would agree. But they don’t usually have 2 out of the first 5. But if lots of GMs feel that way, they could always trade down with that 4-5 pick.
  10. So, the Bears have two picks out of the first 4 or 5 in the draft. And 2 second round picks as well. They are getting a very nice season out of the rookie tackle, Darnell Wright. I think Joe Alt would look pretty good in a Bears’ uniform. Last night Fields was really good … but he was pressured, if not running for his life, on nearly every dropback. Imagine what he can do with a competent offensive line.
  11. They certainly did. But how good is good enough? No game is easy to officiate, but some are more difficult than others. Don’t you want to have the best chance of getting the big call right? The only question ought to be whether a 7 (or 6) man crew is likely to do a better job than a 5 man crew.
  12. I have an example closer to home. My last year on the field I worked the North-South game in July. It was a 7 man crew. I had worked 7 only a handful of times in my entire career. But we had no problem in the game. Of course, there are going to be some mixups. But I believe with officials of that caliber, the benefit of increased coverage outweighs the risk posed by the unfamiliar mechanics.
  13. In fairness to the IHSAA, their unwillingness to add officials in the upper levels of the playoffs is not irrational, or based on some silly reason like economics. There are sufficient numbers of very good officials sitting home after the sectional final for us to go to crews of 7 at the Regional level and above. The IHSAA’s unwillingness to do so is based on the belief that adding two new officials to a crew, in the most important games of the season, that has been working 5-man mechanics all season, is unwise. There is no doubt that 7-man mechanics differ in a number of important ways from 5-man mechanics, including positioning, movement, keys, and coverage responsibilities. You can disagree with the IHSAA’s conclusion that the risks of such a change outweigh the potential benefits. But that’s a judgment call on their part.
  14. Fields playing great so far (end of 1st period), even though the OL is employing the “sieve” blocking technique.
  15. And to think, I got downvoted by @temptation for this. Ironically, he’s the one who introduced me to the concept of keeping “receipts.” Quarterback Danny O'Neil decommits from Colorado The Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral passer had been a verbal to Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes since March. Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral quarterback Danny O'Neil has decommitted from Colorado, backing off a verbal to the Buffaloes he gave back in March over Illinois and others. O’Neil was especially close with Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis, but with the change in responsibilities within the Buffaloes program, that altered the way O’Neil looked at the program. Northwestern is in the mix for O’Neil moving forward led by the efforts of offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian. Wherever Lewis lands next could also be a major factor for O’Neil who ranks as 247Sports’ No. 34 quarterback. “The landscape of college programs and coaches will be dramatically different by midweek,” O’Neil’s father Mike told 247Sports over the weekend. Cincinnati, Houston, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Purdue, Syracuse, Toledo, Tulane and Wake Forest were among the schools that also extended O’Neil a scholarship the first time he went through is process. The 6-foot, 185-pound O’Neil has been one of the Midwest’s top signal-callers the last three seasons. In his time as a starter at Cathedral he’s won a state championship and threw for 7,786 yards and 98 touchdowns, completing over 62 percent of his attempts. O’Neil has also rushed for 1,326 yards and 27 more scores. “He’s an incredible competitor,” Cathedral head coach Bill Peebles said. “Incredibly intelligent. Obviously has great arm. Great accuracy with it. A complete deal.” O’Neil competed in the Elite 11 Finals this summer.
  16. I really thought this fiction had been thoroughly debunked.

    IU 2023

Unless, of course, Fitz needed a few years as a buffer at a place like IU to put some distance between him and the hazing scandal.
  18. Friday was 15,000 something. Didn’t hear Saturday’s.
  19. Anyone else get a better view of the play in the corner of the end zone where the BD receiver caught the pass but was ruled out of bounds? I didn’t see the covering official give a “juggle” signal. That’s the only thing I could come up with, because it looked like a catch from where I was sitting.
