  1. Saw him play when I was a freshman at Notre Dame and IU came up and beat Austin Carr and the Irish 106-103. What a player!
  2. Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the death of George Gipp.
  3. Craig Osika has resigned at Hobart. 52-20 in 6 seasons, including a state runner-up finish.
  4. I don’t know. But then again, I’m not the GM of the Bears, being paid several million $$ a year to know the answer. I bet he’s better at it than me. At least, we better hope so.
  5. I don’t usually listen to that stuff, because all you get is “coachspeak,” but I heard part of an interview with Coach Eberflus today. Honestly, listening to him butcher the language, and struggle to complete a thought, made me yearn for Dave Wannstedt. Incidentally, little known fact. Wannstedt was the model for the bust outside the International Bad Mustache Hall of Fame.
  6. The procedure is exactly the same at all 3 levels of football. If it’s close, you may give the offender the courtesy of a warning. But if it’s blatant, you’ve got to call it … especially in a nationally televised game at that level. I mean, think what the narrative would have been like today if he doesn’t throw that flag. Do you think no one is going to pick up on the fact that Toney lined up in the NZ? It would be going viral before the crew got off the field. Think about sitting in the film room with your supervisor having to watch it on video … over and over and over …. In other words, think about it from the official’s perspective. It’s a no brainer.
  7. Jason Grunewald has resigned as the 3rd HFC in the 57 years of the program at Munster. The Mustangs have not had a winning season since 2014. Time for a program reset.
  8. So, was Elkhart a single school, then it split, then consolidated? During the time there was both Elkhart Central and Elkhart Memorial, which was the rival?
  9. One step closer to college athletes becoming university employees … followed by unionizing.
  10. Tarblooders made it back to back state championships. Coach Ginn is really something.
  11. Since 1903 Crown Point and Lowell have battled each other 117 times. Winner gets possession of The Old Leather Helmet trophy.
  12. Results do have to mean something.
  13. The CFP is not an NCAA championship. It’s an entertainment venture. Their charter says the goal is to get the 4 best teams in the country, so as to maximize the entertainment value of the events. Given their objective, I think they got it exactly right.
  14. That’s almost as funny as 4 star QB CJ Carr — grandson of former Michigan HFC Lloyd Carr — committing to ND.
  15. The mighty, mighty Eagles of St. Edward pull away late to defeat Springfield 31-21 and win their 3rd consecutive Ohio Div. 1 title. On you mighty Eagles, You’ll have to fight to win a victory! So fight, you mighty Eagles, and raise Saint Edward’s green and gold on high. And when the game is on the record, No matter what the final score may be, With all your heart, With all your strength, You played the game and won a victory!
  16. Don’t remember the play, and I don’t recall anyone talking about it. As an aside, the high school rule on that play is different from NCAA and NFL. In high school, if the receiver has voluntarily gone out of bounds and then returned to the field of play, he remains an eligible receiver, but is guilty of illegal participation, a 15 yd. penalty. So, you could have a situation where the receiver steps out of bounds, returns, and is then a victim of pass interference, resulting in a double foul, requiring an offset and replay.
  17. That’s what happens when you go to 7 classes. Can’t play them all in just 2 days.
  18. No offense taken. Shouldn’t be any surprise. Pro and college players are better than high school players. No reason to think that officiating wouldn’t work the same way.
  19. That’s because there is no “across the board.” That’s why the success factor is the best solution. A multiplier or a class bump treats all P/Ps the same, and that does not reflect reality. In what universe are Chatard and Bishop Noll to be treated alike in order to level the playing field? The success factor (at least, conceptually) identifies those programs that traditionally punch above their weight class and moves them into the class where history says they belong.
