  1. Yet, had he been a Bear, his stats would dwarf any 2 other Bear QBs.
  2. They actually called it “Black Jeopardy.”
  3. Now that Spring ball is winding down, and all the recruits are signed, we can turn the page and look forward to the 2021 season. First note: for all of those who thought a kid from a 1A school in Indiana had no business on the roster of a powerhouse D1 program like ND, here’s the assessment of Pioneer’s Jack Kiser heading into the season: Some wondered what Clark Lea was thinking when he zeroed in on this Single A high school quarterback/linebacker out of small-town Indiana. But in addition to leading Pioneer High School (enrollment 444) in the town of Royal Center (population 833) to a 15-0 record and a state championship his senior season, Kiser proved himself to be a savvy, gifted athlete whose humble beginnings did indeed translate to big-time college football at Notre Dame. After a transition year as a freshman in ’19, he served as a backup Buck linebacker in ’20. He stepped into the starting lineup against South Florida and excelled. Now, under Marcus Freeman, he is showing quite well at Rover this spring. If there’s a football and Kiser is on the field with said football, he’ll be around it. He looks like a three-year starter from 2021-23. (Emphasis supplied)

  5. Please. There’s only one legitimate successor to Trebek.
  6. Observations after Day 1 of the draft: What’s the over/under on how long it will take Justin Fields to supplant the Red Rifle in Chicago? I make it 8 1/2 games. The Raiders continued their tradition of reaching in the first round, taking the Alabama OT who was rated as a 2nd or 3rd round prospect by most. Somehow, the Patriots ended up with the QB who is a great fit for their system. The haters are still trying to figure out how Belichek masterminded that one. They know he cheated. They just don’t know how. The Cowboys will pair #1 pick Micah Parsons with Jaylon Smith to create the fastest pair of linebackers in the league. Love the Steelers’ #1 pick Najee Harris as a player ... but taking a RB in the first round is of questionable value. They certainly need to find a running game to protect Big Ben. But with the retirement of Marquis Pouncey, they should have bolstered the running game by addressing the offensive line first.
  7. I think Rodgers is dissatisfied with the organization. That’s not a news flash. But what Tom Brady did has emboldened him, and others. The paradigm used to be get with a good organization, and stay there. Now we are in a phase where players think they see greener grass elsewhere, but very few of them have the power to do anything about it. Rogers is one of the few.
  8. Did not see that coming! But I am all in on Justin Fields! When the dust clears, the Bears may well have made the move of the entire draft here.
  9. The numbers are what they are. The problem comes when correlation and coincidence are confused with causation. The point reflected in bold escapes me. Are you saying that two of the conference schools are different in some ways than the other conference members? Because I suspect that there are a lot of conferences whose members are not homogeneous.
  10. So, the City of a Chicago has filed suit against Westforth’s in Gary, claiming that the store is funneling guns to Illinois gunslingers through “straw man” purchases. https://abc7chicago.com/gary-gun-store-chicago-lawsuit-sues-westforth-sports/10550506/ This is “scapegoat-ism” at its finest. But I’m interested to see what happens in the initial legal skirmishing, because Indiana law prohibits any person from bringing or maintaining an action against a firearms or ammunition manufacturer, trade association, or seller for: Recovery of damages resulting from, or injunctive relief or abatement of a nuisance relating to, the lawful design, manufacture, marketing or sale of a firearm or ammunition; or Recovery of damages resulting from the criminal or unlawful misuse of a firearm or ammunition by a third party. Furthermore, if a court finds that a party has brought an action under a theory of recovery described above, the finding constitutes conclusive evidence that the action is groundless. Upon this finding, a court shall dismiss the claims or action and award to the defendant any reasonable attorney’s fee and costs incurred in defending the claims or action. In addition, a person is immune from civil liability based on an act or omission related to the use of a firearm or ammunition by another person if the other person directly or indirectly obtained the firearm or ammunition through the commission of a burglary, robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, or criminal conversion.
  11. According to this story, his 3 preferred destinations are with the Raiders, Broncos, or 49ers. The story sets out the contractual situation. Sounds like if the Packers were ever going to trade him, it wouldn’t be until after June 1. https://lasvegassun.com/news/2021/apr/29/report-aaron-rodgers-pushing-for-trade-raiders-on/ Report: Aaron Rodgers pushing for trade, Raiders on his list By Mike Grimala (contact) Thursday, April 29, 2021 | 2:11 p.m. As if they weren’t busy enough with preparations for the first round of the NFL Draft, the Raiders’ war room no doubt jumped into overdrive on Thursday afternoon as reports surfaced that Las Vegas could be on Aaron Rodgers’s short list for trade destinations. Rodgers, the reigning league MVP after passing for 4,299 yards and 48 touchdowns in 2020, is on the outs with the Packers and has reportedly told the team he doesn’t want to return to Green Bay for the 2021 season. According to Pro Football Talk, the Raiders are among three preferred destinations for Rodgers, along with the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers. Rodgers has been named MVP three times during his Hall of Fame-caliber career and quarterbacked Green Bay to a Super Bowl championship following the 2010 season. He is heading into his age-38 season, however, and the Packers were cognizant enough of his age to select his replacement, former Utah State star Jordan Love, with a first-round pick in last year’s draft. Rodgers has three years remaining on his current contract, with cap hits of $37.2 million, $39.8 million and $28.3 million in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively. The Packers would assume a massive dead-cap hit of $31.5 million if they traded Rodgers before June 1; after June 1 that figure would drop to $14.3 million. The Raiders have one of the league’s longest-tenured starting quarterbacks in Derek Carr, who is heading into his eighth season at the helm of the silver and black. Only Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons), Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks), Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Rodgers have been starting for their teams longer. Carr performed well for Las Vegas in 2020, completing 67.3% of his passes for 4,103 yards with 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions, but Rodgers would obviously represent a massive upgrade at the game’s most important position. Carr is set to count $22.1 million against the cap in 2021, but the Raiders have some flexibility with his contract should they choose to pursue Rodgers. The team could save $19.6 million on Carr’s contract by trading him, incurring a dead-cap hit of just $2.5 million. It is unknown what the Packers would want in return for their franchise quarterback, but it stands to reason the cost would be heavy. Green Bay reportedly turned down the 49ers’ offer of the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft; the Raiders own the No. 17 pick this year. When Raiders general manager Mike Mayock was asked after the season about the possibility of attempting to upgrade at the quarterback position, he said the team is happy with Carr but that there is a professional responsibility to investigate other options. “Obviously, I can’t talk about anyone else’s players, so I won’t,” Mayock said. “I’ll just talk about Derek and I’m going to tell you the same thing I’ve told you guys the last couple years, which is I think Derek Carr had his best year yet under Jon Gruden. I think he’s one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and we couldn’t be happier with him, and I tell you every year, we evaluate every position, every year. I have no idea who might call me or who might not call me, so you have to do the evaluations both on your own players and every other player in the league and you got to stack your boards and understand what league value is all around the league, and we do that.”
  12. Barajas didn’t work out, and the jury’s still out on Kiser. But Bilal, Tranquil and Jaylon are in the NFL. That’s pretty good for being “undersized.” Notre Dame’s base defense is a 4-2-5 set. The 5th defensive back is actually a hybrid safety/linebacker known as a “Rover,” rather than the team’s 3rd cornerback in a traditional “nickel” set. That’s the position they all play. That’s also the position played for the last 2 seasons by Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who will get drafted tonight in the first round, listed at 6’ 1” and only 215#.
  13. “Undersized?” Kid’s only a sophomore. He’s still got some growing to do.
  14. You know, when it comes to recruiting strategy, I’m willing to give the SEC schools the benefit of the doubt. They do pretty well.
  15. So, one day before the draft, the Broncos trade for Teddy Bridgewater. Presumably, that takes Denver out of the first round QB sweepstakes. Atlanta is most likely going to go with Ryan for another year or two, so they’ll likely draft a skill position player, rather than a QB. So, after QBs go in the first 3 picks, it remains to be seen what will come of the other 2 QBs who are projected first-rounders. The Patriots are #15, and they are definitely in the hunt for a QB, as are the Bears at #20. Minnesota (#14) and/or Washington (#19) may well get into the act as well. Going to be an interesting Thursday night.
  16. Is he likely to get bigger? He’s only a sophomore now, which means he’s got 2 more off seasons in the weight room before he steps onto a college field.
  17. This has been discussed many times. “Suburban mega-schools” success formula is simple, but it has 2 parts, both of which must exist at the same time. First, there have to be “advantages” that the size and demographics provide. But second, they must capitalize on their advantages, which means a committed administration to support them, coaching that is both skilled and can get kids to come out and play, and a supportive community, including a well run feeder program. Socioeconomic or other advantages by themselves do not translate to a successful program.
  18. Tayven Jackson has committed to Tennessee. https://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/college/university-of-tennessee/football/2021/04/28/tayven-jackson-tennessee-football-commit-recruiting/4876197001/
