  1. The operative word being “could.” There’s no denying that the road back to full participation after a program is shut down for a few years is much more difficult than after a pause, or a “step down” fo a JV program.
  2. Canceling a single game due to a temporary situation, even a bowl game, is not nearly as big a deal as shutting down a program. But I certainly agree that safety comes first. Isn’t there a compromise between contraction and playing a full varsity schedule? Perhaps a “pause,” a term we’ve become all too familiar with in the post-COVID world? Or compete with only a JV schedule? Contraction is a permanent remedy for what may be a temporary situation.
  3. Thinking about it, I bet he made as much $$ in his career from EA Sports as he did as a coach and broadcaster combined.
  4. So was Joe Theisman … and some guy named Montana.
  5. Didn’t realize this, but of all NFL coaches who coached at least 10 years, he has the highest winning percentage … just ahead of Vince Lombardi.
  6. He and Summerall are the standard by which all sports broadcast teams are measured. And don’t forget his coaching career. Won a Super Bowl and over 100 NFL games as coach of the Raiders. A real giant of the game.
  7. I’m sure you realize that the finalists in the 6A game the last two seasons have both been from what would be your small 6A group. So much for the hypothesis that schools from the bottom half of 6A can’t compete with the top half.
  8. I find the inconsistencies here fascinating. Players take pride in “taking one for the team,” subordinating their own wishes for the good of the team. Players who sacrifice for the team are praised for it. Conceptually, what is the difference between playing in a big game when you’re not physically 100%, and getting vaccinated so that you’re available to play to the greatest extent possible, rather than sitting unavailable in extended COVID protocol because you’re unvaccinated? Is it because the whole COVID thing has become a political football (no pun intended)? Or because there is some difference between being out because of COVID vs. being out because of a sprained ankle? Either way, you’re unavailable to help the team. I don’t get it.
  9. I hope you’re right. But the reason he’s starting is that Josh Lugg, who started all 12 games at right tackle, hurt his knee in practice and is having surgery.
  10. I don’t want to slight anyone, as my memory isn’t as good as it used to be. So, I’m undoubtedly leaving some very fine coaches out. But the others that come immediately to mind are Mark Hoffman at Valpo and Craig Buzea when he was at Portage.
  11. Coach Wimmer’s 1987 Zionsville team’s 3A state championship victory over Elwood was my first state final. I subsequently worked games involving his teams at Merrillville, Greenwood, and Fishers. He’s among the 2 or 3 best in-game coaches I saw in 40 seasons. Always classy.
  12. I know it’s a small sample size, but Nick Foles played pretty well yesterday in his only appearance of the year. But if Foles can still play, why did the Bears need Andy Dalton in the first place? Is this just another case of lousy talent evaluation by the Bears? Foles’ contract was restructured when he came to the Bears, and they still owe him a bunch of guaranteed money. If Fields is ready next week, do they play him or showcase Foles, trying to find someone who will take on what was previously thought to be an untradeable contract? This is just another example of the Bears’ organization making it up as they go along, rather than actually having a coherent plan.
  13. For me, the scariest ones were shots when the player on the receiving end went into “Fencer’s Pose,” which you knew meant they were really unconscious. Very creepy.
  14. Don’t sleep on this guy. Brian Parker at Hanover Central. NWI Times Coach of the Year in the Region. https://www.nwitimes.com/sports/high-school/football/sustainable-success-hanover-centrals-brian-parker-is-2021-times-coach-of-the-year/article_d55373c2-bf9a-5919-b83f-5d8299637187.html
  15. One of my favorites is Tommy Lasorda when he was asked after a game when Dave Kingman hit 3 homers against the Dodgers, what he thought of Kingman’s performance. Very NSFW.
  16. Just go to YouTube and search Earl Weaver. Hours of entertainment.
  17. Female variants of male nicknames don’t count. See above. Also … are you kidding? Squaws?
  18. Plymouth, though, can still boast that they are the only high school in Indiana with 2 nicknames: the Rockies and the Pilgrims.
  19. Today we celebrate the birth of The One — He who has shown us The Way — who provides the template for our lives. The One to whom we can turn for words of comfort or inspiration. The One to whom so many owe so much. Please, keep on doing what you do. Happy Birthday, Jimmy Buffett!!! Merry Buffett Day to all my GID friends!
  20. Notice that all the current SCOTUS Justices are skinny. 😉
  21. Par for the course for Jimbo Fisher.
  22. Discriminatory and unlawful are not the same thing. There are all sorts of discriminatory practices that are perfectly legal. Body size is not a “suspect classification,” like race, sex, religion, etc.
  23. Yes, I seem to recall Rex is something of an expert on feet.
