You have to know that a list like this, without Eastbrook, is a complete falsehood!  Eastbrook would beat every team on this list.  It’s the same thing every year.  Blah, blah, blah.

I'll tell you like I tell other people, if you don't like it, take it up with Sagarin.  These numbers are from his computer rankings.  I am NOT making these up.  I just look on his rankings and then compile a list.  Last week someone complained that Andrean wasn't on the list.  I won't argue, just tell you these are Sagarin's numbers.  I don't agree with some of them either, but there it is........

Sorry my friend Im not a next year guy. Shoulda worried about next year 3 years ago

Whatever that means.  They WILL be better next year.  Just too young this year.  They make too many untimely mistakes.  Penalties, missed blocks, missed tackles, etc.  I deal mostly with realty.  Reality = this team isn't playing Thanksgiving weekend.  If they do, then that will mean 4 or 5 teams (out if 6) they should have played, had to forfeit due to the virus.  Sectional 40 is still tough.  Tell City is tough this year and Mater Dei is still the team to beat in spite of their record.  They play the second toughest SOS in all of 2A.   You can never count them out.

Whats to write about? Big Dan is the guy for Miner Football ( Well and Rex Tuttle our Historian). I expect writings will increase when we figure out who this Miner Team is

He's always done write ups for games regardless of "who the team is".  I imagine it may have something to do with his work schedule and he hasn't had time the last 2 weeks to do one.  At any rate, I miss reading them.  I've always liked his insight and getting a heads up on the other team.

I won't predict a score  Linton should win though. Look at the Teams our Miners have played. 3-2 actually very impressive after the Blowout week 1. Boonville was a game of the last 5 years. ND is really doing well is that SOS probably I think. Just like Linton was for years. I do think that ND has the potential to highly rise in 1A just like Linton did thru success not so much enrollment. With the schedule my Miners  have already played I want to see something. I wanna see domination. Dont confuse that with a blowout. They are not the same. If we dominate in all areas the score doesn't matter we Win. I highly regard the Cougars. ND doesn't really have to do well or not in this game. Wont see Linton again this year. Linton has to dominate to be a real threat in 2A. If we keep improving but dominating in the latter half of our season I can possibly see another nugget round Turkey Time! Just a thought

I think the Miners will make more noise in the tournament next year.  With only 5 seniors on the roster this year, they will be another year older and experienced next season.  The team is mostly sophomores and juniors this year.  The running game is really starting to click.  They have 4 solid ball carriers.  Any of them can get 100+ on any given night.  Most of the games have seen 4 ball carriers get between 60 - 80 yards.  So there is no one guy they have to depend on.  Makes it tougher on defenses.  Now that the tough part of the schedule is over (first 5 weeks) the Miners should be favored and win the last 4 games.  I think we'll probably see a couple of games where a couple of backs get 100+.  It's already happened once (if I remember right).  The easier games should also give the Miners a chance to work on the passing game too.

  5. Here is this week's list with the state rank of SOS:

    1)  Fort Wayne Luers - 33

    2)  Mater Dei - 62

    3)  Speedway - 88

    4)  Monrovia - 98

    5)  Cascade - 99

    6)  Providence - 103

    7)  Rensy Central - 106

    8  Shenandoah - 113

    9)  Eastern Pekin - 115

    10)  Woodlan - 116

    11)  Winchester - 124

    12)  Lewis Cass - 125

    13)  Linton - 129

    14)  Triton Central - 138

    15)  Scecina - 144

Read every post over the last 4-6 weeks regarding this game.  Pretty much everybody on both sides is ambivalent.

Do some of you only read the GID annually?

I’m only repeating what has been said.....err....repeatedly.

I admit to being equally incredulous.

Someone give this guy a cookie and tell him to sit down.  I guess we aren't permitted to have a discussion about a game.

It's an inopportune time to have the game right before the start of the playoffs, but it still matters to an extent as bragging rights are on the line, nobody wants to ever lose. But given the all-in format where you actually know your first round opponent before week 9 kicks off and the fact there's no seeding/qualification/conference title implications on the line means it's only bragging rights for one team. For instance, I suspect if Indiana had a qualifying format, last years 4-4 Center Grove heading into their week 9 match-up with Cathedral likely would have needed a win to get into the postseason and someone like Carsen Steele who was sidelined most the year with injuries would have played.

But sans 2018, all these games have actually been terrific to watch. Each game (other than 2018 blowout) has been decided by a touchdown or less. There's been high scoring games, a 7-0 defensive slugfest, even an OT thriller. With Cathedral and Center Grove likely both being head and shoulders better than the rest of their class peers, this game probably declares the best team in the state. I don't know what the coaches plan on showing or who they will choose to play/sit, but I do know that both teams will give it their all.

That's what I'm thinking, too.  As you say, It will be for nothing other than bragging rights however, it will also be for the #1 ranking in the state (yeah I know, still bragging rights).  I know Center Grove has been ranked in the national polls this year.  Should Cathedral win, can we assume they will move into the national polls?  I mean it will be the last week of the season so maybe not.  I haven't checked for a couple of weeks, so maybe they are in it already.  But I haven't heard anyone say anything about it.  It's great for the state of Indiana.  I may be just a fan of a 2A team but I like all of football and think it's great when Indiana gets recognized nationally, regardless of who the team is.  Cathedral's schedule does a lot to promote Indiana football with their interstate games.  And I doubt it is just Ohio and Indiana paying attention to their games.

Apparently, Linton's best lineman, Donovan Debruhl, will not play tonight.  Concussion last week.

Well that stinks.  Hopefully he recovers fast.  I'll still say the Miners win  36 - 12.  This is the best team the Cougars will play all year.  I think the Miners rushing attack will be too much for the Cougars to handle.  Probably see a couple of Miner rushers over the 100 yard mark.  I wonder if Miner Pride will do a game write up today?  He didn't post one last week for the Boonville game.

Dunno....all the folks here seem ambivalent about that game.  I think a few of them are likely a little credible.

Could be they are just trying to keep it on the "down low".   Or maybe just being respectful towards each other.   Regardless of how things appear, I only know that the week 9 winner will be the definite #1 in the state.  Cathedral pretty much plays one of the top schedules in the state.  They always play a few of the big dawgs in Ohio.  Being independent allows them to do that.  They can load it up and have to play through a meat grinder.  At any rate, they are always tested by the time the tournament rolls around.

Honestly really have no idea what you are saying.  I just pointed out the polls and their differences. Pity that you don’t care about analytical ranks...

I’m not riding anybody’s bandwagon.  I could care less.

From what I’ve seen so far previously on the GID is that BOTH Cathedral and Center Grove don’t really care about their late season game and will sit on their hands in that game.

We really won’t know who is No. 1.....based on most of the comments I’ve seen heretofore.

Its all about the Blue Rings.

Aren't we just having a conversation?  I said I get what you were saying about the polls. I check them regularly.   I call BS about Center Grove OR Cathedral not caring about that week 9 game.  Maybe their fans don't care but you can bet your sweet potato that the teams do.  And Center Grove and Cathedral should get their blue rings.  Unless someone in either of their classes pull off a major upset.

You act as if teams have a total choice as to the strength of their schedule.  It’s pretty much dictated by the conference that you play in.  I just think that there is too much emphasis on the SOS when determining rankings.  Every year there seems to be a number of teams ranked ahead of Eastbrook in the north and then Eastbrook beats said teams in the tournament.  I’m sure it will be the same case this season.

Unless you don't play in a conference.  Then you can schedule whoever you want (as long as they agree to play you).  But even teams in a conference can schedule good competition for their non conference games.

    Here’s the deal.

Sagarin only counts In-State Games.  Out of state games are a black hole as far as Sagarin.

MaxPreps/CalPreps calculates ranking inclusive of in and out of state games.

I’m a huge Sagarin fan but for teams who play out of state games Sagarin has historically chronically underrated them (or simply not been able to rate them).  Despite my leanings towards Sagarin the lack of inclusion of out of state games is problematic.

Sagarin has the Top 5 currently as:

    1. Center Grove (6A)

    2. Cathedral (5A)

    3. Brownsburg (6A)

    4. Chatard (3A)

    5. North Central (6A)

MaxPreps/CalPreps  has the Top 5 currently as:

    1. Cathedral (5A)

    2. Center Grove (6A)

    3. Brownsburg (6A)

    4. Chatard (3A)

    5. North Central (6A)

I’m likely the last guy here riding the Cathedral bandwagon but Sagarin takes NO consideration of their win against St. X Cincy (which is a bit significant).  Sagarin takes NO consideration of the fact Brownsburg beat St. X as well.

Right now, I think the Big 3 are Brownsburg, Cathedral and Center Grove (in alphabetical order).  Both polls agree...just a matter of whether it’s Cathedral or Center Grove that’s #1.

I get everything you're saying.  I'm riding the Indiana bandwagon.  Anything to promote Indiana high school football.  Wasn't that the main reason that Tim started this website?  So I don't care who it is exactly or where they are ranked.  It's all about  beating those guys across the state line, right?  But Cathedral is #1 in 5A.  That week 9 game will tell us who's top dog in the state and we won't have to speculate or depend on polls.

  13. It's looking like the state champion in 2A this year will come out of the North.  Several teams in the South this year seem to be having "down" years:  Western Boone, Scecina, and Mater Dei are just a few that come to mind.  Not saying they won't make some noise in the tournament, but I don't see them winning the title.  Of course, any team can get hot and end up getting to Lucas Oil even with a few losses.  Some times luck of the draw helps.  I guess we'll see in a few weeks.

I swear, one of these days I’m going to wangle an observer’s assignment to a game at LS! The way people talk about that place ... I’ve got to see it for myself.

Wait until the virus is over and go see a game during the tournament.  The air in Linton is electrified at that time of the year.  It is one of those situations where the town is behind the team.  When I moved to Linton in 1995, I couldn't believe how much they loved their football.  I figured it would be basketball in Indiana, but in Linton, it's always been about the gridiron (to my delight).  And as the AD told me many years ago,  "Once a Miner, always a Miner".  My son graduated in 2003 but I STILL follow the Miners every week, every season.  It's been a joy and sometimes hellish watching this program grow.  It has been great to see them earn and gain respect around the state.  Their SOS these days is much, much stronger than it was even 5 years ago.  No more, "you guys don't play anyone".  And don't forget:  there are signs hanging up as you come into town that says, "you'll like Linton".  C'mon down, Bobref!

Yep, a Cathedral poster brought up in a recent thread that since the Irish have begun using Arlington's field (they have no football team), a local Cathedral supporter who owns a landscaping company takes care of the maintenance of the field. I'm sure his company receives something in exchange, either a banner, game program ad, or radio ad spot... I think it's quite common and is part of what makes sports (and some other activities like industrial ed/technical classes with partnerships with local businesses) a community endeavor

I used to be against businesses/companies getting involved with amateur sports (mostly high school) but any more with budget cuts, etc, I would think it could help in some ways especially with the smaller programs.  It's one way to get things you may need for your program without giving up a lot.  As long as there are no "shady" deals and things are transparent.  As you said, "a community endeavor".  I like the sound of that!
