Most vulnerable to a team with balance that can use the run to set up the pass. I don't think a 2A team will beat us being one dimensional. Corners have struggled letting receivers get behind them, safties are aggressive and like to hit, so over commitment by the safties with corners on an island vs quality receivers is our biggest weakness.

The same can be said for most/many high school teams.  IMO, DB & SS are the most difficult positions for high school kids/teams.  Need to be fast and able to make quick adjustments at speed and, oh yeah, and then come up and make hit on a RB coming at you full speed who often outweighs you.  Where do I sign up?   Good luck this week.

Not to mention their strength is Linton's supposed "weakness".

Curious, what in your mind is Linton's "weakness"?  My guess might be pass defense but that would be just a guess.  Remembering last year's game, LS seemed to have a lot of speed and size on both sides of the ball in their returning Jr class, now Srs.  They are many people's pick from South in 2A this year.

  3. Once again, Mater Dei will be travelling to Triton Central for the Regional championship.  Should be a good game and there is certainly some background "bulletin board material" for fans to talk about leading up to the game.

Per IHSAA rules, the visiting team picks the day and home team picks the start time.  The last 2 times MD has travelled to TC, they have chosen to play on Saturday due to the longer bus drive.  TC, in turn, has picked a late morning start time instead of a more typical noon or early afternoon start.  Supposedly there were conflicts with other home sporting events - possibly a girls basketball game(?) - that created concern about limited parking thus necessitating the earlier than normal start time.  Max Preps currently lists the game for 6:30 pm Friday but I believe that is the standard time they post until the home team gives them an update.

Curious if MD will once again pick Saturday or go with the more traditional Friday evening game?  If MD chooses Saturday again, will there be similar gamesmanship by TC with the early start time?  Stay tuned...

Football Fanatic mentioned it in the Sectional 24 thread. I have not seen any film myself. It looks like Vera was a non-factor in the game. Was he injured? I thought Burnett left with an injury?

Not certain about Burnett.  I listened to the broadcast and don't recall anything being mentioned about an injury.  Vera as a non-factor was a big surprise to me too.  He was the difference against MD.  Offense had much better rhythm with him at QB and his threat to run changed the game.  Kept thinking he was going to come in at any pt in the 2nd half to give RHS a boost.  Reitz had a couple of HUGE plays down the stretch but ran out of time.

Glad to hear folks talking about the extra point attempt being tipped.  Spread the word...   It would be a difficult thing to live down on the Hill if you were the one who muffed a kick and lost the game back in 2022...   Some Big Blue fans can be rather unforgiving and unkind, at least in my 50+ years of dealing with them.

Definitely a huge letdown for Reitz. They have to be disappointed. Most people had them going to regionals and maybe even semi state. Usually teams that have both a great offense and great defense make those long playoff runs. However, we all suspected that the penalty bug was their weakness and would eventually be their downfall. Besides that, they missed opportunities and could not catch any breaks against Boonville. But we shouldn't forget that a majority of their team is juniors, and a sophomore QB. While they do lose some talented seniors (especially Thomas and Burnett), they return a ton of talent. I believe they return 7 starters on offense and 7 starters on defense, that includes their 3 DL that combined for 37 sacks which is tops in the state. Having 4/5 OL back with the Summers/Vera combo will be huge. We can also assume their sophomore QB will get healthy and improve. It looks like the main areas they need to replace are at RB and defensive backs. Considering their freshmen and JV both did well, they shouldn't have any problem replacing those spots. Losing early in the postseason is surely not acceptable in the Reitz community, but they have a lot to be happy about and look forward to. I expect Reitz to be even better next year.

Having watched Reitz play several times this year, IMO, their QBs became much too dependent on simply throwing the ball downfield and having one of the excellent WRs go get it, which they often did.  This did not play out vs Boonville however with the 3 INTs sealing the Panther's fate.

I have no heard this mentioned anywhere here on GID or local paper but from people at the game, they said the last extra point attempt was tipped.  Any one able to confirm this?

Had to been 8500+ strong in this one

As someone who has attended the annual West Side rivalry game for more than 40 yrs, I was disappointed in the crowd, to be honest.  The end zone area was only about half full and there were empty areas easily visible in most sections of the bowl.  The visitor side stands were mostly empty too.

There was a larger than normal Reitz crowd, likely owing to this being their best team in a decade and the fringe fans who have been pulled back in but I think the MD fans were the ones missing.  I think many felt this was a potential blow-out and stayed away.   There is a lot of commentary that flows back and forth among the opposing fans of these two teams and it can get heated at times and some simply choose to avoid it.

The DL isn't as good as last year without Boots and Ralph, but everywhere else on the defense I think we are very solid.  On offense we don't have that explosive receiver like we had with Eli McDurmon, but the receivers are generally sure handed.  They rotate in 5-6 WR and they are all pretty interchangeable.  Isaac Goebel played on Friday for the first time since the VL game, Cody Wells should return to C/DL in time for sectionals.  Pierre looked fine in his return to the lineup on Friday, didn't get a ton of carries, but looked fine.  Luke McDurmon should be back soon too.  They are getting healthy at the right time of the year.  We shouldn't be challenged much in the sectional, but I expect a good, tight game with Triton Central/Scecina in the regional.  Linton may have a cake walk to the SS.

I still have concerns about our overall speed on defense.  We seem a step slow vs SIAC teams so maybe just a 1/2 step vs 2A teams.  We have a lot of people going both ways at RB/WR & LB/DB/S so some concern about fatigue in tight games.  Agree we are getting healthy at right time but playing teams with speed like VL, RHS, etc will be a challenge IMO.  Few 2A teams have that kind of speed but certainly  L-S is one that does.  Paoli always gives us a really tough game so nothing guaranteed in Sect 40.

The Regional is going to be pretty tough for MD, as the Cats will either face Brownstown Central or Scecina, or Triton Central. And if you make it out of there, a pretty tough Semi-State

I think L-S has to be favorite coming out of the South this year.  They have a lot of returning players from last year and plenty of speed at skill positions.  MD could get taken out by Paoli in Sectional 40.  They always play us tough.

    SIAC has some futbol teams!

Memorial and Jasper wins their Futbol sectionals

Since Linton-Stockton has been moved to a completely different sectional, I don't think Mater Dei has much of a sectional challenge this year.  The soonest they would cross paths with the Miners is the Semi-State round under the new 2A format.  Not certain MD has the horses to get that far this year but if we can get hot again as we enter the playoffs, anything is possible.

At least we covered. LOL. Hoping you guys can get 'em in Wk.9.

Heard you lost your kicker?  You guys are having a decades' worth of injuries in one season!  Cannot help but think the game might have gone a little differently if you are able to kick the extra pts and don't get down by 9 late.

Not certain if we can hang with their speed, esp at WR.  I was watching on phone while at the Bowl (Thanks TigerFan20 for the link to the IndianaSRN broadcast you posted!) Those last couple of catches to close out 1st half were amazing for a high school kid.  Vera just threw the ball in his general direction and counted on WR to go get...and he did.  Best WR in So Indiana, IMHO.

Good luck the rest of the way...hoping to share some more of your chili on a cool fall afternoon here in a couple of wks

@MDAlum82Just can't pick Reitz can you?  LOL.

As you know cousin, Mom was a proud graduate of Memorial and she adopted the Wildcats as all of her children and most of her grandchildren passed through.  Over the years of competition across a number of sports, she developed, hmmm, how shall we put it tactfully...strong feelings about our west side brethren...

She would come back and HAUNT me if I picked the Panthers over her Tigers.  Plus, I have a feeling about this one😎
