  1. Week 5 Picks BNL (2-3) at Terre Haute South (1-4): This one could go either way. The Braves have been smoked in all four of their losses but they have a solid win over their rival, Terre Haute North (2-3), who lost by seven to Bloomington South and by three to Bloomington North. The Stars have two wins but they’re Jennings County and Madison. I’ll take Terre Haute South. Connersville (1-2) at Jennings County (0-5): The Spartans got their first win since 2017 on Saturday night when they easily defeated a winless Rushville team. As luck would have it, they get another winless team to play and this one might be worse. Not much more to say here. Connersville beats the Panthers easily on homecoming night (Is that still a thing this year?) in North Vernon. Mitchell (1-2) at Madison (1-4): The Bluejackets had a bye last week so they’ll have had two weeks to prepare for Madison come Friday. Nevertheless, their one win was against an Eastern Greene team whose only win came against a winless Springs Valley team. Meanwhile, the Cubs have some offense. Aside from the shutout loss to Seymour, they’ve put up at least 26 points in every game. Madison is my pick. New Albany (3-2) at Bloomington North (3-2): Unlike the Cougars, New Albany has a win against Bloomington South this season. However, that seems to be an anomaly as the Bulldogs haven’t looked too impressive since then and Bloomington South has gone on to win their next four games. As for Bloomington North, they’ve stomped their opponents in wins against BNL and the 5A Terre Haute schools. I’m picking the Cougars. Seymour (3-2) at Brownstown Central (3-1): I’d have a much easier time picking this game if the Braves hadn’t been upset by a 3-2 Salem team in week 3. On the flip side, you have a Seymour team that has looked impressive in three straight wins after opening the season 0-2. They’ve gotten things figured out. However, this will be the first time Coach Moore has played Brownstown and their unique offense. If he has the answers to it in just his first game against them then I’ll be shocked. The Braves get the W. Columbus East (3-2) at Floyd Central (4-1): Saved this one for last. The Olympians have won 92 straight conference games as well as 103 straight games against conference opponents when including postseason play. I was a senior at East the last time they lost a game against an HHC team. The program turned around in 2004 and I was at the game for their week 2 win at Columbus North. When it happened, I felt like we had something special. We began HHC play against Seymour the next week and from that game on, I’ve never felt like East was going to lose a conference game (even when they lost at BNL in 2006). Have I been nervous going into games at times? Yes, but I always figured East would find a way to win. I say all of that to say this. I’m picking the Highlanders to beat East. Might get killed for saying it but I’m saying it. Other than the win at Columbus North in week 2, I haven’t been that impressed with my team. Offensively, Floyd Central is a less-talented Elkhart team and we really struggled against their two-dimensional offense. Defensively, I thought we did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage against North but I was completely underwhelmed last Friday when New Albany ran all over us. If they didn’t keep stabbing themselves in the foot in the red zone then it would’ve been a closer game. That’s the key against Floyd Central. If our defensive line can’t get any penetration, plug the holes, and get pressure on the QB then we’re sunk. Based on what I saw last week and against a two-dimensional offense like Elkhart’s, I have almost no confidence. Maybe Coach Gaddis pulls something out of his hat like he has done with tough opponents in the past and has the boys prepared. However, I’m not going off of what we’ve done in past seasons. I’m going off of this season.
  2. Pick ‘Em Standings (after week 5): @Fkfootball 12/16 (.750) @boilerfan87 20/27 (.741) @Frozen Tundra 19/27 (.704) @starbacker 18/27 (.667) @mamasa 17/27 (.630)
  3. Based on what I saw out of the East defense tonight, I think Floyd Central has a very good chance. New Albany got it in the red zone on almost every possession. Just couldn’t finish. I think your two-dimensional offense is going to give us problems.
  4. Who isn’t looking at a long playoff run? The point is, if Elkhart can make the 3+ hour drive on a Friday then Merrillville can on a Saturday at the very least. Also, who’s to say Merrillville has to make the drive? Columbus North was supposed to be the road team this Friday anyway. They were still willing to play a road game last I saw.
  5. Elkhart played at Columbus East in week three and East is making the trip up there next year. I don’t see why Columbus North and Merrillville can’t play.
  6. Anybody know if Jeffersonville is trying to find a week 6 opponent? I noticed Crawford County and Springs Valley are open that week too. If they want to play an Indianapolis team in that slot again then I saw Scecina was available.
  7. Cornell uses that song too except they call it “Give My Regards to Davy”
  8. Jennings County and Seymour both use Wisconsin’s fight song. Kind of weird when they’re rivals. Columbus East uses USC’s fight song. I don’t remember what Jeff, New Albany, Madison and BNL use. I’m curious to know.
  9. I believe Seymour used Temple’s old owl logo for awhile (before Temple moved to their current T logo). I don’t understand why Temple would be ok with it but not Rice.
  10. Sure seems that way but it wouldn’t be the first time a college or pro logo was “ripped off” by a high school team
  11. Pick ‘Em Standings (after week 4) @Fkfootball 12/16 (.750) @boilerfan87 16/23 (.696) @Frozen Tundra 15/23 (.652) @starbacker 15/23 (.652) @mamasa 14/23 (.609)
  12. Yep and here’s the brand new entrance to Jennings County’s football field. It just opened up this week.
  13. We’ve probably talked about Jennings County the least on here thus far this season so let me give them some attention. After four weeks, it has become evident how very bad they are this year. They’re averaging 8.5 points per game while giving up 36.5 points per game. Both numbers are the worst in the conference. Granted, this team lost A TON of starters and talent due to graduation so this shouldn’t be an indication of what the team will be like in future seasons. Nevertheless, this team is likely going to be 0-10 this year. If so, that means the week 6 game against Connersville will be the first win for the Spartans since 2017 (if they don’t defeat a winless Rushville team in week 5).
  14. Jeffersonville is actually playing at Columbus East due to field construction. Also, Jennings County is at Seymour rather than the other way around. Regardless, I also have all four of the teams you picked to win. Seems like another easy week of pick ‘em.
  15. Can’t go against @boilerfan87 nor @Fkfootball here. Seems like the consensus will likely agree with all five picks here.
  16. Just a pet peeve of mine. Even I like to be a heel and yell at the sky every so often.
  17. Right but the polls are only supposed to rank a top 10. For some reason, John Harrell and members of the media will rank the teams outside the top 10 that received votes. So if 13 total teams receive votes then they’ll rank the teams out 1-13. If 17 teams receive votes then they’ll rank all 17 teams. And so on. There should just be a top 10. If you want to note a team received votes then you can do so without attaching a ranking to it. There have been several years where teams with no business receiving votes have done so. It’s like the voter wasn’t paying attention. It happened to Seymour during one of their bad years a few years back. They were 2-5 and received a vote so Harrell and the media referred to them as the #19 team in 4A when they were nowhere near being the 19th best 4A team.
  18. Right but they don’t say those teams are #26 or #29 or what have you.
  19. As far as I’m concerned, there is only a top ten and East is unranked. We don’t give a number ranking to those outside the top 25 receiving votes in college sports. Why do we do this with IHSAA football? Not a knock on you but I’ve seen the media do the same here.
  20. Still doesn’t beat last year’s schedule when we took the Ohio state champions down to the wire in week three last year. I’m still mind-blown that we were able to even be within 21 points of them.
  21. Remind me again but who are the players on Floyd Central getting D1 offers?
