That’s news to me. I didn’t know he ever got back into coaching. How far back are we talking? In 2019, East honored the 1979 state championship team with a 40th anniversary recognition during the pregame and Stafford was there.

Just a follow-up to your question, East still has Jonathan Martin as an assistant coach. He’s been at East since the John Stafford days. I believe he’s been there about 30 years now.

I would think they’re patient and they should be. They also have a younger team this year. Give Haston a few years to get something going. I know it took Gaddis four years before he could catch fire at East. That should be the norm timeframe unless the team regresses drastically.

This is going to seem like I’m taking a shot at Columbus North but I promise you it’s not. I was not impressed with them when I watched them play East. They won the turnover battle and field-position battle. However, they didn’t march down the length of the field and get TDs. They just took advantage of a ton of mistakes East made. I think they’re average at best. I’m guessing they go 4-5 or 5-4. They’ll lose to Chatard, sweep the Terre Haute schools, and maybe split with the Bloomington schools.

I thought I’d heard that awhile back and wasn’t sure if it was an exaggeration or not. Someone had said they’re in North district despite being able to see South from their house.
