Edinburgh High School canceled its homecoming football game on Friday night as it investigates a formal harassment complaint filed late Thursday involving members of the football team.

Jim Halik, the interim superintendent at Edinburgh, said the harassment complaint was filed to the superintendent and principal, Kevin Rockey. Halik cited FERPA, a law that protects the privacy of student education records, in declining to discuss the nature of the harassment further.

“As a result of that, we are taking it seriously,” Halik said. “We have zero tolerance on any harassment. It doesn’t matter what kind or what it is. I think it’s important for people to understand that there are consequences for those actions. Right now, we are still working on that.”

Halik said the police are also investigating the harassment complaint. He said he is hoping to have a compliance officer assigned Monday morning to begin an independent investigation.

“I’m looking for someone outside the district so there is no prejudice involved,” he said. “I think everyone involved deserves a non-biased investigation.”

Edinburgh announced the cancelation of the game on Friday afternoon, posting the message “due to unforeseen circumstances, tonight’s homecoming football game and all related homecoming activities are canceled.”

Edinburgh has four games remaining on its football schedule. Halik, who has worked more than 50 years in education and 28 as a superintendent, said he is “not sure” of the immediate future of the football program.

“That will be a decision Kevin Rockey and Luke (Robertson) will be in conversation on for sure on Monday,” Halik said. “We’ll have to wait and see. Dealing with the complaint was the number one priority.”

Hmm.   The beginning of a disturbing trend, that we have seen in other states, or just a stupid "trick" played probably by a teenager?

EDINBURGH, IN — This small town sitting 40 minutes south of Indianapolis on I-65 clearly has great pride in its school district. Coming off the highway, the first marker isn’t for the town itself but for the Edinburgh School Corporation, the home of the Lancers.

One family moved here this year, excited about what their new life would bring them and their kids, with one son smiling for the first time in a long time.

“He felt like everything was going perfectly, and he was super excited about being on the football team,” the mother said.

Less than two months into the school year, however, the sophomore is taking classes online after he was sent a video of two teammates saying “kill all n------" and a Snapchat message warning him not to come to practice because some players were planning to "jump" him.

The school's homecoming football game was canceled, and police and school authorities launched investigations.

“We have zero tolerance on any harassment,” Interim Superintendent Jim Halik told IndyStar. “It doesn’t matter what kind or what it is.”
