Head Coach

Coach Gilbert

Question

Ruling?

situation

Team A kicks off to Team B.  Receiver catches and runs, defender knocks ball out of receivers control, ball intercepted by kicking team and player runs 25 yards for touchdown.

on field, Ruling 1:  ball is dead when fumbled, kicking team does gain possession.

then there is a meeting of the minds as the officials spend 6 minutes discussing

on field Ruling 2:  touchdown

which is the correct rule? I was puzzled as I thought you could not advance a free kick fumble.

K can not advance a kick. Once the ball was possessed by R, K can advance. In the play described, R possessed it, then fumbled allowing for K to advance for a touchdown. Correct ruling.

If R would have muffed the kick, thus not securing possession, by definition the kick would not had ended and k would not have been able to advance after recovery.

Now the question back is: was the play ever blown dead prior to K crossing the goal line, because then we would have an IW and it changes the result of the play.

The question here is whether the kick had ended. The kickers can never advance a recovered free kick. But if the kick had ended, it’s a fumble and can be advanced by either team. A kick ends when the ball is possessed or declared dead by rule. So if the receiving team player clearly had possession, then it’s a recovered fumble advanced for a TD.
