Quick Tempo offense

djbowzz

Question

Do officials research the teams at all to see what kind of offense they run?  For example, Eastbrook's quick tempo offense, do the officials know what they are getting into or does the coaches give them a heads up?  I would hate to show up to a game to expecting a standard offense only to realize I am sprinting when a certain team has the ball.

The short answer is some do, and some don’t.  But I will tell you that many years ago I was very publicly criticized by a very influential coach who was appalled that I, as a crew chief, was trying to acquire information about the teams I was seeing that week. He felt that it was unprofessional, in that if I got information about the teams ahead of time, I would enter the game with a bias, or “looking” for certain things. He’s still a very respected coach, mentioned often in these pages.

We generally work at the same pace regardless of how fast the team wants to go. The ball is placed and ready for play with 28-32 seconds on the play clock. Very rarely is a team ready to go when I step away. Some are faster than others after that, but very rarely is the ball snapped above 25 seconds. When most coaches are asking that question they are more worried about having a very slow crew.
