Going up 14-7 is a pretty good momentum swing. I have no dog in the fight. That could have made a big difference. Discipline normally wins in the end. But it does sound like Merrillville had the talent to get it one. Coulda would shoulda. Westfield will always go down as the better team on paper.

Of course it would’ve made a difference. But don’t worry, Bob will say whatever he needs to justify horrible officiating in his own mind. He was asked point blank on that thread that night whether the call was missed and deflected and didn’t answer. Pretty cowardly, but a pattern.

What is the difference between a “horrible” call and one that is merely “wrong?” I guess it depends on whose ox is being gored. The back judge let a D1 player run by him, so he was in a poor position to make a call on the end line. He got it wrong. And I stand by my statement that Westfield was the obviously superior team that night. That TD might have made a difference in the score, but the outcome wasn’t in doubt in the 2nd half.

Merrillville literally was going to take the lead late in the 3rd quarter on that touchdown Bob. It was 20-16 Westfield at the time. So there goes “the outcome wasn’t in doubt in the second half”. Instead of 23-20 after the swing from the call it was 27-16. Even if you said Westfield would’ve scored on their next possession anyway, 27-23 is a lot better of a hole to be in at that stage of the game. Everyone on this message board that night (except for you, ironically enough) agreed that the call was really bad and altered the rest of the game. You were asked point blank on that game thread that night was the call missed and didn’t answer and instead deflected. I rest my case.

I was there that night. The back judge got one wrong on a bang-bang play on the end line. But Westfield was by far the better team that night.

The horrible call took a TD off the board for Merrillville. Westfield then took the ball on downs and scored against a pretty deflated Merrillville defense. Take away that swing and it’s 34-30. Hardly what I’d call “by far the better team”. Would the correct call have made a difference had the game theoretically played out? Well we don’t know, since a touchdown everyone watching could obviously see wasn’t called by the one guy who needed to see it. Should Merrillville have responded better to the bad call? Sure, but it shouldn’t be surprising that a call that bad took the wind out of the sails of a bunch of teenagers. “Bang-bang” maybe, but hard to claim that when only one guy couldn’t see it as a TD when it happened.

Also from the Region, agree on Noah Ehrlich @ CP, has a cpl D1 rec and a TE, with a huge Oline, Valpo's Justin Clark had a terrific 2022, but with 6 Td passes in 14 games with 6 pics and 1034 yds not quite a complete dual threat yet. Sebastian Boswell from Chesterton with 1400 yds and 12 Td's in 8 games is  formidable, but have to see what the listed 6'3" 215 lb QB can do with his legs and a full season.

Clark wasn’t the QB until second half of the MC game when the previous starter got hurt. Add in the fact Valpo will always be heavy run and his numbers look a lot better. Kid made big time throws throughout their run.

Those more in the know with football in the Fort, fill in the blank.

”If Snider can stay within ___ points of Warren in week 1, it proves they are a 5A state title contender.”

Whiteland beat LN last year who beat WC by 3 TDs. Transitive property aside, I don’t think the spread here is as high as it would’ve been 5 years ago.

look at Valpo a few years back. I believe they were undefeated going into sectionals and there coach was forced out by the players during the state tourney  and that’s how Marshall became the coach.. so I’m understanding.

It’s funny, I know you’re Parkurst just by the way you’re making stuff up. That coach was forced out by other teachers at Valpo after he posted motivational fliers across the school some felt “uncomfortable” with. The players were not happy about this at all and literally voiced their frustrations in the paper. This is well documented.

  7. Right now this is how I would rank the teams:

    1. Crown Point - Last year they lacked a passing game and they’re bringing in some transfers to address that. They return most of the O-Line and the Defense. They have the best coaching staff in the area. They are undoubtedly the team to beat in the DAC.

    2. Valpo - They return 19 starters and also boast a very good coaching staff themselves. The defense will be stingy and the offense will wear teams out. And Clark proved last year he can make the clutch throws needed to really put this team over the top.

    3. Lake Central - This team was really coming into their own towards the end of last year and you can see that in their box scores. 3rd year under Rick Goode and they’ll look to turn a corner. They return their starting backfield (the QB that transferred to Hobart was the backup). If they can play solid defense, they should be able to ride physical Big Ten commit RB Xavier Williams to victory in many of their games.

    4. Chesterton - They return their QB and their overall best player RB/LB Garrett Lewis. They always play solid defense and last year they were more physical running the ball which was nice to see from them. Think they’ll be a tough out.

    5. Merrillville - Lost almost all of their production from last year and QB is a big question mark for them right now. They’ll still be dangerous because they play in what is probably pound-for-pound the worst sectional in the entire state. If they can figure things out they’ll have a chance to make a run at the end. But I doubt they’ll be anything more than middle of the pack this year in the regular season.

    6. Michigan City - This team has the talent to be ranked higher than this. But their schedule top to bottom is very tough and even the “easy” games (Portage/LaPorte) look like they might not be so easy (Roy Richards knowing this team as their DC for the past several season and LaPorte being a rivalry game MC lost last year). I have a feeling a season like last year’s could be in the works again.

    7. Portage - This team will be better because they now have one of the best head coaches in the conference at the helm. But I just don’t think they have the depth, especially in the trenches, to really compete consistently.

    8. LaPorte - This program is even more of a mess than it was last year, when they managed two conference wins. I’d be surprised if they reached that total this year.

Carroll broke through last year and gave the Temp hope that his dream of a non-central Indiana team competing in 6A was a possibility and then the state title game happened.

Is Crown Point next in line?

Definitely an empty ending for their season last year, but also I don't think anyone up here had expected them to run roughshod through their opponents for the first ten games though. They just ran into a team with a good game plan and a D1 RB who they simply could not stop that night. They return almost all of the defense and the O-Line, and bring in a legit D1 receiver and a QB who maybe has the potential to play D1 if he can put everything together. I think this should help as they were very one-dimensional offensively last year, which really haunted them against Jeff. They have a very good coaching staff top to bottom, located in a growing, wealthy town with only one high school, have great facilities they are investing even more money in, and have a strong youth program in place with CP Junior Bulldogs. As long as Buz's health holds up, I can see them turning into a perennial power up north. Whether that means they can compete with the teams from down south is another story.

  9. To clear up some confusion, Davis did play against Penn last year. He got hurt week 4 against Chesterton. Big difference in the Penn game was Justin Clark was not at QB for Valpo, he came in halfway through week 3 against MC when the original starter got hurt. Big thing for Valpo was that Clark and Davis didn’t play a whole game together in the backfield until the sectional championship against Chesterton, and they really didn’t start clicking offensively until the second half of the regional against Merrillville. That’s when it became clear that the combo of Davis inside and Clark outside would be hard for teams to deal with. Which you saw against Snider and Whiteland.

As for whether Valpo should be considered a top 10 team all classes currently, I’d have to say no. Even if I give them that they weren’t at their full potential during those games, they played two middle of the road 6A teams last year and did not fair well against either of them. Right now, I think they’ll beat Penn (they had beaten them the previous 4 years before last), but I don’t think they will beat CP. Is CP a top ten all class team? Right now the answer is obviously no. Not just the 6A teams, is Valpo better than East Central, Roncalli, or New Pal? Probably not. They are a blue blood but they are not as good as they were when they took Carmel and then New Park down to the wire in back to back years.

I guess I get it, but playing a 6A Indy power annually would do wonders for them in terms of tournament preparation in my opinion.

Still can't get that Chatard game out of my head.

I think Seiss would agree with you, but I don't think there's really anything he can do about it.

Too bad Merrillville refuses to play us.

Pretty certain this has been said before, but Merrillville's admin won't let Seiss schedule any non-conference games other than Andrean and Hobart because they always get those games at home and the gate. Seiss has been pretty open about that fact.

Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit.  Call me a hypocrite call me whatever you like it doesn’t matter.

you’re not the only taxpayer and there are plenty of people who pay their fair share of taxes just like you and me who want their tax dollars to go towards improving the community.  Nobody likes paying taxes, but since we have to pay them, it would be nice to see them go towards tangible things that make a difference in the community.

Wisconsin isn’t a utopia and I’ve never said it was. For me personally it just provides the best opportunities for me at this point in my life.

Gibson County isn’t the only place in Indiana facing those hardships…but you know this already considering you always advocate for taking away sports for schools in the most impoverished areas. Go visit crawfordsville or Thornton…go to south Indy in places like Irvington…go to pike county and see the people whose kids go to pike central who you say should board up their football program.

shoot….just go to south bend…you have Notre dame and it’s world renowned school and absolutely gorgeous campus….but 5 blocks down every business has barbwire fencing around it

I don’t need to disclose any of my generosity and that doesn’t matter at all.  I have helped where I could and ultimately I’m only 27.  I’m trying to build my life for the future so that one day I can give outrageously and no desire to take wads of cash to the grave. I’m 1 person just doing my best with the goal of one day uplifting entire communities and restoring some humanity to this world.

What’s hilarious is that you’re the bitter old man who will tell people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps….but you’re telling someone who has done exactly just that to step back in line and implying as if I do absolutely nothing.

it’s kinda funny how that works.  You’re being confronted by the type of person you want everyone to be if they face hardships and in turn you are trying to shame me for it.

Money is only useful for providing opportunities and I think it’s ridiculous to let people like you go unchecked on trying to take away those opportunities.

one day, there is going to be a thread on this forum where one of us will have sadly passed away.  You’re going to be remembered as the guy who constantly sought out ways to take opportunities away from kids as it stands now….and I hope that when my day comes I’m nothing like you at all.  Absolutely nobody should look up to you and the ways you think about this world and I hope you take that to heart
