I thought we all agreed that Sagarin doesn't make any sense when it comes to three of the better teams in 5a north............Snider, North Side, and Dwenger. So why are we taking that into consideration?

Let's not underestimate the Pirates for losing to a pretty good Crown Point team. Mishawaka might actually be a pretty darn good team. And no one really knows how good Snider and North Side are until the tournament gets here. I wouldn't underestimate them though. "Extremely weak" is extremely naive in my opinion.

I don't know man, others seem to agree and I've seen it said on other threads on the board. Not trying to disrespect the teams in the class but I would say its much more naïve to not recognize that 5A as a whole is down this year.

Elaborate a little more on "extremely weak." Please don't say "because Zionsville moved up to 6a." Give us more than that.

Just look at the Sagarin Ratings for 5A. It’s not a strong class. Whoever wins 4A would run through 5A and I don’t think it’s crazy to say whoever wins 3A likely could win 5A too. For schools that size the level of play is definitely subpar this year.

Do I need to send you the link from the post where they said coach buzea?

Yall can keep talking and when merrillville is the only team left standing we can revisit this. Crown point is so over rated. Kinda like y’all thought merrillville was last 3 years. This crown point team won’t make it past regionals. And that’s if they can make it past there sectional

Except you won't be able to send me a link for that because Buzea literally didn't say that lmao. You took the QB's quote and added the stuff about Merrillville being 'more talented' and how they 'don't want to see them again'. I mean jeez man if you're going to make stuff up don't make it easily disprovable with a 30 second google search. Gonna have to do better than that to fool me. Honestly it's just completely pathetic that you tried to make a quote up just to make yourself feel better. And Merrillville WAS extremely overrated the past 3 years, and they got their butts thoroughly kicked every time they had a shot to prove otherwise. Merrillville going further than CP in an extremely weak 5A would be nothing to be proud of.

Soooo, national studies are better than our players' safety? Hard sell to the kids who lost the rest of their careers.

National studies tell us natural grass IS safer. Just because you claim at your school it hasn’t been doesn’t mean it isn’t. How about you tell all the many more players that have been injured on turf that it’s safer than grass just because you think it has been at your specific school.

Not at all........on our grass field, I know of 3 players whose career ended with serious knee injuries, between the game field we played on and our practice field.....have not had a single serious injury in the 5 seasons the turf has been in place.

Anecdotal evidence vs studies done by medical professionals…

    Wonder which is better

Post tribune yes there is look at it how. And here is buzea quote

Basically we needed to be tougher than them to win,” “They’re faster than us, everyone knows that, at every single position most likely. they are more talented than us. We needed to beat them with what we had: size. We definitely got away with this win tonight and I wouldn’t want to see them again down the road”

    your welcome

LMAO that's literally the QB's quote from the NWI Times article, and you added the stuff about not wanting to see them again.

I ask again, do you live in a fantasy world?

When did carpet come into the mix with concrete?  Most Catholic school kids probably recall that there really wasn't a true "playground" for recess in elementary school.  After the cars dropped off kids in the morning, the parking lot became the playground.  To make matters worse at our school, the school uniform required hard-soled shoes unless your class was on "gym day" ... then you were allowed to wear tennis shoes.  You learned very quickly how to make cuts on concrete and oil slicks when you were playing and how to control your body to keep from ending up on that concrete surface.  And God forbid it had rained before recess.  Acrobatic catches are all the rage on ESPN, but try making those on concrete.

I think we've finally cracked the code on why the Catholic schools are so successful

We should probably make the distinction that NFL non contact injuries are not exactly comparable to HS.  Size speed strength are at an entirely different level.

the most common injury for Hs football is probably sprained ankles from running on uneven surfaces.  Nfl teams also have entire departments dedicated to preparing the field to make sure the conditions are as ideal as possible.

basing an argument against turf using Nfl data is so flawed.

Except they've done studies specifically focused on high school and found the exact same thing.

Edit:  Completely overlooked Chatard and Brebeuf.  Make it 18 teams.

    1.  Roncalli

    2.  Crown Point

    3.  Carroll

    4,  Snider

    5.  Merrillville

    6.  Chatard

    7.  Fort Wayne North

    8.  Brebeuf

    9.  Martinsville

    10.  Whiteland

    11.  Franklin

    12.  Mooresville

    13.  Evansville Reitz

    14.  Dwenger

    15.  Homestead

    16.  Decatur Central

    17.   Vincennes Lincoln

    18.  Valparaiso

You won't get an argument from me on how the DAC should be one of the best conferences. It should be at worst 4th (I don't think its unreasonable to accept that the SAC will be better some years, especially starting next year with the big school division). If I had to do a top 25, without copping out and doing ties (because I think some of these teams are extremely close), it would look something like this:
    1. Roncalli

    2. Carroll

    3. CP

    4. Chatard

    5. Snider

    6. Merrillville

    7. North Side

    8. Reitz

    9. Brebeuf

    10. Whiteland (I know they just lost to Martinsville, still think they're the best in the Mid-State)

    11. Martinsville

    12. Franklin

    13. Mooresville

    14. Dwenger

    15. Homestead

    16. Valpo

    17. Memorial

    18. Castle

    19. Decatur Central

    20. Lake Central

    21. Vincennes

    22. Mater Dei

    23. Chesterton

    24. Michigan City

    25. Leurs

As others have stated Sagarin cannot compare teams that are not connected.  Both conferences will not be connected until the playoffs.  Last year the same happened only in reverse.  The SAC was over-weighted during the season and the SIAC was under-weighted.  Playoff results will have outsized influence on both conferences final rating.

Last year's rankings for both conferences top five teams were as follows:

                             After week 9                           After state

SAC                3,8,11,12,19                                20,48,60,68,70     (yes, Sagarin thought 5 of the top 20 regular season teams were in the SAC)

    SIAC               65, 83, 88, 113, 137                  25, 26, 31, 44, 69

One year ago there was a discussion on this board about why the SAC was valued so highly.

Yes, we all know that Sagarin cannot compare closed conferences until they play noncon opponents. That doesn't explain why two closed conferences are being treated so differently. This just shows the problem has been ongoing. The fact that it was reversed last year makes it even more bizarre.

Crown point is overhyped.. and there own coach said they don’t want a rematch with merrillville 😂😂 but I never appointed them favorites for state I said they are the north favorites. But if Mishawaka falls this week merrillville is back to #1

Where did Buzea say that? Please provide a source. I'm waiting. Also, that "overhyped" team man-handled your Pirates 27-6 in the second half of that game.

    Not even close.

Let's go head to head with the DAC, Mid-State, SAC and SIAC.

    1.  Crown Point/Martinsville/Carroll/Evansville Reitz  (I'll take Crown Point out of this grouping slightly ahead of Carroll.)

    2.  Merrillville/Whiteland/Snider/Evansville Mater Dei (Top three here are a push in my opinion.)

    3.  Valparaiso/Franklin/Fort Wayne North/Vincennes Lincoln (I am taking both Franklin and Fort Wayne North over Valparaiso.)

    4.  Chesterton/Mooresville/Homestead/Castle  (I'll be kind here and place Chesterton in 3rd of this grouping, though possibly fourth.)

    5.  Lake Central/Decatur Central/Fort Wayne Dwenger/Evansville Memorial (Lake Central is a distant fourth here.)

    6.  Michigan City/Plainfield/Fort Wayne Luers/Evansville North (I'll give you Michigan City here.)

    7.  Portage/Perry Meridian/Fort Wayne/Wayne/Jasper (Gimme Jasper here.)

    8.  LaPorte/Greenwood/Fort Wayne Concordia/Evansville Harrison (Don't know enough about this group to make an educated guess.)

Right now as I see it.

    1.  HCC

    2.  MIC

    3.  Mid-State

    4.  SAC

    5.  SIAC

    6.  DAC

    7.  Circle City

Like I said, the conference is down this year. Still think you're being a little unfair though, the past 3 years before this you could make a strong case that the DAC was a top-3 (AT WORST 4th) conference in the state. The DAC lacks depth this year but I'm still not convinced it doesn't have the top 2 out of the Mid-State, SIAC, and SAC (side note, I think you're underrating the Circle City here). We'll see as I think there's a good shot the top 2 in the DAC and SAC will meet in the playoffs.

He's using different datapoints to estimate how to weigh them. He's probably looking at previous year's tournament success or something similar.

Using different data points would seem to contradict the whole purpose of the Sagarin Ratings to begin with. If teams aren't being judged on the same criteria, how useful are they?

  15. 6 minutes ago, hhpatriot04 said:

Sagarins system can't deal with unconnected conferences until they become connected in the playoffs. His ratings are based on common opponents.

Yes, that has been established. But then why are two unconnected conferences rated so wildly differently? They should either both be overrated or both underrated. One being overrated and the other underrated doesn't make any sense.

The last 2 years the SIAC has been pushed down on sagarin for their rankings.  This year they seem up a lot…especially when I’m looking at Vincennes.  They are very good this year but they are currently ranked higher than Chatard, West Lafayette, and Gibson Southern in 3A.

Reitz is listed as #9….which….maybe….they look awfully convincing this year and 4A is up…. but I’m not convinced they can beat Memorial and I’m not sure anyone is pounding the table saying this memorial team is a top 10 team in the state.

when Memorial was a top 10 team in the state a few years back they were steamrolling their way through the SIAC and Reitz hasn’t been that level of dominant.

i think the postseason will fix sort this out.  7 teams in the top 67 overall….which is basically the top 20% of the entire state.  Something is going to give for sure.

I just don't understand how simultaneously one closed conference is overrated while the other is underrated. The ratings should deal with both in the same way. This makes it seem like there is a hole in the system.

  17. I believe this has been discussed before, but does anyone have any idea why the Sagarin Ratings seem to have such a discrepancy dealing with the SAC and the SIAC? Both are closed conferences, but Sagarin seems to overrate the SIAC while underrating the SAC. For example, taking the teams currently leading each conference, Reitz is rated #9 overall in the state (and 1st in the predictor), while Carroll is 50th in the state and #74 in the predictor. Does this make sense to anyone?

So is saying merrillville Will be the only team to get past regionals a pipedream? Because they will be lol 😂

Not sure what you mean because CP could easily be getting further than regionals with a much harder path to get there. Merrillville has a JV sectional and every potential regional opponent is in the midst of a down year, if they don't win regionals that would honestly just be pathetic. Also, with the way Merrillville anointed themselves 5A state champs before the season even started, they better win the whole thing. If not, they'll have badly embarrassed themselves for the third year straight. As @temptation put it "From 'best in state' to second best in conference".

Actually if you see my inbox there are crown point fans messaging me saying they couldn’t believe they ran away after the half. They also said Valpo was without 2 of there main RBs? That I don’t know.. I know merrillville is down a RB right now

They were without their starting RB but I assure you that would not have made any difference. CP completely dominated that game in the second half and honestly the first half too even though it was only 14-7 going into the break. Thinking Valpo was going to beat them then lose to Merrillville was a pipe dream.
