I wanna say Carroll (Fort Wayne). This opinion is pretty bold considering the Chargers haven't even made it past regionals in 12 years under Dinan. His record is 90-45, but many of those victories came against schools with much smaller enrollments. That being said, he's had a few teams that were pretty good. Last year was his best, but he unfortunately ran into Westfield's best. He tutored under Russ Isaacs for ten years, so he knows what it takes to build and maintain a program. And Carroll just continues to grow in student population. I wouldn't be surprised if they surpass the 3000 mark in five years. They have outstanding facilities. I think the Chargers could be a player at the 6A level for years to come. But they need to prove that last year's defense wasn't just a one year fluke.

  2. Was little surprised to see AC’s 1st 3 games.  Could be tough sledding early for a team that lost a ton.  I’m sure the younger kids are good but the difference between jrs and seniors is significant.  Win with seniors.  That being said the ACAC is down a little given SA is in rebuild mode for awhile… Bluffton lost bunch of seniors.  … maybe Heritage or Jay Co can put something together.  Regardless, plenty of time to “get right” before tournament.  Am predicting “dark horse” 1A rep from the North at LOS this year… am going with Triton.

    19. (8): Angola, Columbia City, DeKalb, East Noble, Fort Wayne South Side, Fort Wayne Wayne, Leo, New Haven

5 NE8 teams in the same sectional with close to possibly 6 if Norwell would have went 4A.   Is this the most conference teams that are in the same sectional in the state?

Looks like NE8 gets it’s own post season tournament.  I suspect there was a desire to delay or eliminate a Maconaquah sectional match up with Wayne / NH.

    Looking at the brackets

6A: Pretty much as I expected. Two schools had to go north, and HSE/Fishers being paired with the two Fort Wayne schools made a lot of sense because of their proximity to I-69.

5A: Again, a pretty easy map. The big question was which pairs would go with which in the south. IHSAA opted to put THS/THN with Whiteland/Franklin and BHSN/BHSS with East/Seymour. I'd have flipped the Johnson County & Bloomington schools and created an I-65 sectional and a SR 46 one, but the IHSAA was clearly looking at latitude instead of longitude.

4A: The big question was, who was going to go into Sectional 23, which was going to be a spread-out mess no matter who got sent there. The big question was which schools would go into 23 and which into 22 among EC, Connersville, Shelbyville, Beech Grove and Greenwood. Again, the IHSAA went with latitude - East Central to Edgewood to Silver Creek to Greenwood is going to be a doozy but there was really no way around it. A bit of a surprise to see Logansport go north and Huntington North go south. Sectional 20 is largely centered around SR 26 but Frankfort to Jay County or Frankfort to Huntington will be a bit of a haul. Frankfort was likely going to go into that field because there was no place else where it would fit.

3A: A few surprises that make a lot of geographic sense - West Lafayette in Sectional 25, Chatard in Sectional 28 (which was clearly created as a US 31 sectional) and thus in the north.  It's a good map as you see the fourth northern sectionals are all centered around major highways (25 - I-65, 26-Toll Road, 27-I-69, 28-US 31), but somewhat surprised Delta/Yorktown go up to Fort Wayne instead of Oak Hill/Tippecanoe Valley.

In the south, West Vigo & Owen Valley being sent to Evansville while Southridge/Heritage Hills get sent to southeastern Indiana is a bit interesting. What I might have done is leave Southridge/HH in southwestern Indiana, put WV/OV in with Monrovia and Crawfordsville and move Purdue Poly/Speedway into Sectional 31 (likely bumping SD/Lawrenceburg to 32). But you can see the mapmakers really considered travel and major highway corridors - Lawrenceburg/SD with schools along I-74, WV/OV moved south because they are on US 41/SR 67, Southridge/HH are close to I-64 and thus it's fairly easy to access the Louisville area.

2A: Really makes a lot of sense when you look at the map. The sectionals are about as compact as they can be and the dividing lines are sensible.

1A: As compact and sensible as 2A is, 1A is one of the weirdest maps the IHSAA has ever put out. Park Tudor and Gary Bowman could play in the same regional? Sectionals 41 & 42 aren't geographically contiguous. The sectional fields themselves largely make sense, although I would've flipped Sheridan and Park Tudor to make those two sectional fields more geographically contiguous. The change I would've made is the regional round - Sectionals 41 & 43 should be together, 44 and 45 should be paired together, as well as 42 with 46.

Here are the maps, with each sectional color-coded (the northwest regional in reds, the northeast regional in oranges, the central regional in blue/green and the south regional in black/gray): https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1O6J1oaoKWSgPWgPhsL7-eng1-_vqyqEr&usp=sharing

The decision in 3A north to bring Delta and Yorktown to Fort Wayne and to add Tipp Valley to 28 is very odd.  Almost an extra hr drive for everyone? Makes no sense to me.  Decision to move West Lafayette complicates Marian’s yearly waltz to semi state.

In reading this topic I see some questions are being asked.  Here is what I see as someone who is around a lot...

    1.  We have had a couple of classes in a row who don't play football.  The kids in those grades are good kids but they aren't football players.  I wish they could've got some wins but if you look at them through the years they just haven't been successful in football.  So lack of talent is reason number one.

    2.  Our move from the option based offense that worked in the early 2000's to shotgun spread (when Coach Barron's youngest was QB) to wildcat (Jake Reichard at QB), to this past season where we didn't have an identity.  The offense switched from game to game.  None of them worked.  But we had an offense we hung our hat on and changed it for the coach's son and we still are searching for an identity.

    3.  New AD over the last couple of years who had a well-known outburst after a boys basketball game that has made it difficult to get coaches to apply for open jobs. (Girls/Boys Basketball).  We will see about Football.  But on a side note even though we had limited people apply to for the Boy's Job they seem to be showing improvement and hopefully we will turn the corner there.  Joel Grindle and his staff of former basketball players are doing an excellent job.  But still there is a lot of distrust from the coaches on staff for the current AD.

    4.  But our Junior High teams were both very successful this past season and things are looking up.  Will we be competitive next year?  Not unless we can get some more athletic kids to play.  But there is a chance for us to get better with the right person in place.  Patience will be key for the new hire.  I haven't heard any rumors about where the coaching search will go but I do hope we get plenty of people to choose from and if any of you are looking to apply please do and if you want any info about the school that can't be asked here, DM me on the digest and I will try to get you your answers.

I want us to be good at the major sports.  When schools see success in Football and Basketball in Indiana they seem to have better overall school culture.  So please if you are coach looking for a challenge please apply!

Agree talent key.  Assuming there is talent in the building, the coach can either pull those talented kids into the program or drive them away.  After a long stint of losing seasons the new coach will need to find a 7th or 8th grade team to invest in, endure 4 years of misery and then hopefully see the turn around.  See Norwell High school past seasons on John Harrell as an example.  Watched the fall and resurrection first hand.

    Yes.

This is what can happen when you simply shift the biggest top-bottom enrollment imbalance from 5A to 4A.    And is yet another example of the stupidity of a primarily enrollment based classification system for high school tackle football.

Not sure they would “dominate” 4A but would probably be the favorite to win sectional 20 if that’s where they land.  That would require a couple Fort Wayne schools to shift to a Northern sectional to make room for Kokomo and Norwell who will likely be moving up.  Am interested to see how the 4A sectionals shake out in the North.

Pioneer has a very successful program and was, in the past ten years, in the bottom 20 of enrollment for the entire state. The enrollment is now in the top 20 for 1A. 35% of the Jr/Sr HS receives free lunches, while 98% of the elementary enrollment receives free lunches.

So the 2 keys are 1) be a 1A school and 2) have Jack Kiser

Interested in what criteria people used or would use to nominate an individual,

Follow up to this… 15 years down the road… what criteria is used to evaluate whether or not we were right about these guys?

    answer: Ws

the criteria used to evaluate a potential coach should be directly related to their ability to produce Ws.

    imo:

ability to communicate and build relationships with kids. parents and coaches is the most important characteristic.

Much more about Jimmys and Joe’s than Xs and Os.

  9. East Noble has a very impressive program.  I believe they finished 3rd in the NE8 the last 2 years so not sure where the “weak conference” comment is coming from.

Grant Moser has done a really nice job over the past few years at SA. They had a ton of talent roll through.  He has his work cut out for him over the next few years.  While the ACAC guarantees 4-5 conference wins per year it could be tough sledding at SA for a few years.

Colby’s time at Mac was puzzling.  They returned a ton that year including their do everything back.  Guess one could blame it on covid like everything else but that was a very disappointing year for Mac.
