  1. You are absolutely correct. It was a starting point. Blue rings identify the top of the house, no doubt, but it’s only part of the story. The list from JH’s site is pure wins versus losses. It is important to put value to those programs who win a lot of games from year to year. Also, another stat that should compliment the full data set is what was the enrollment trend for those “successful” schools during the same time period. Maybe the most successful programs are the ones who were challenged with declining enrollment while still winning games and championships?
  2. Here’s a little food for thought… Pointing out Tipton and Eastbrook, and Linton on this list from JH’s website.
  3. I do believe they belong in this conversation. They were just a couple of years later to the party.
  4. Great topic. A good place to start looking at data is IHSAA enrollment numbers and then John Harrell’s website on the “combined yearly records” page. Going back as far as the data goes, which is 1984 here are the results. The smallest schools on the list are Linton, Eastbrook, and Tipton. This data speaks volumes for those programs. To be in the top 20 in winning percentage of all schools in Indiana in the last 38 seasons, is quite a statement. I imagine a lot of people will argue for Mater Dei, Andrean, and Chatard, but there is no way a private parochial belongs in this conversation, ever.
  5. 1988 - Tipton at Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, 3A Semi-State. The old Zollner Field was an absolute mud pit. It had rained a lot leading up to the game. Hard fought battle for both teams. Tipton was down 15-16 in the 4th quarter. On 4th down of their last possession, the Blue Devils kicked a 47 yard field goal to win the game 18-16 and go to their first state championship game. 1994 - Griffith at Tipton, 3A Semi-State. There was nearly 3000 people at the game. The city brought all the bleachers from all across the town to accommodate as many people as they could. They were lined up 2 to 3 people deep all the way around the track against the fence. Tipton was up 25-18 in the 4th quarter. Griffith managed to score a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock. The score was 25-24, Tipton. Griffith decided to go for the two point conversion. Tipton tackled the ball carrier on the 1 yard line to win their second semi-state an go to their second state championship. All of the Blue Devil fans rushed the field to celebrate with the team.
  6. Yes, the last two weeks have been full of good football. Hats off to all the winners and losers. Very well played and coached games.
  7. Their pace is like Paul Westhead’s system at LMU and the other places he coached basketball. It goes something like this, they are going to run their offense as fast as they can run it and during the course of the game they’re going to run about 30 more plays than you. They think by running fast and running more plays they are going to out score you based on percentages. They have a great system, maybe one of the most unique approaches in the state. Yes it is difficult to play it, but you can match it with physical play and passing deep down the sidelines and influencing their defensive alignment to your advantage.
  8. Right, and there is no doubt Luers and Eastbrook have two very different approaches. I would like hear from someone who has seen the QB from Eastside play this year. Based on his stats he sounds like “the real deal.”
  9. Eastside’s QB has 1500 passing and 20 TD to go along with his 1800 rushing and 27 TDs to go with it. I am going to say Eastside will be able to pass the ball. Eastbrook won’t take both threats away.
  10. Eastside over Eastbrook. The panthers wont be able to stop the pass. Eastside has played a tougher schedule too.
  11. (Devilpride95 clears his throat)…I will be an football official at some point, just not done coaching yet…
  12. I think you have great passion for the team you like. I think everyone on here has great passion for a team. The difference is this. Most people think that there is more than one really good football team in the state of Indiana. Week in and week out, the passionate opinions about their team are shared with everyone. I think that most conversations have an understood level of sportsmanship mixed with mature banter. I’ll be the first to admit it is fun to have those conversations. But when my team loses I can say with a clear heart, “good game” to the other guy. Yes, it hurts and we might looks for excuses sometimes. Even when we win we can humbly tell the other guy, “man you guys played a great game.” And at the end of the day we look for other conversations to have about the amateur sport that we all love, high school football.
  13. That’s what we thought. It should have been 3rd and 5, but they ended up giving them an automatic first down. Just unfortunate…I don’t think they scored on that drive but we would have gained significant field position.
  14. This video is from the Tipton/Eastbrook game. The flag was for roughing the passer. Is this correct or not, please explain your opinion. FullSizeRender.mov
  15. Same here. Eastside over Eastbrook. I seen the Hudl film of the Luers/Eastside game last year and they had Luers beat then, just couldn’t hold on at the end. Can’t remember the number of the player but I believe their RB and MLB was a very good player. I can tell you that we would have been concerned about having to play Eastside (after losing to basically the same Luers team in regional last year).
  16. I would not say they got it right... However, I have never been in their situation, either (and I would say the same about many people on this topic). In games that include two top teams, maybe the best two in 2A North, there is little margin for error for the players and coaches, but also the officials. That play happened to be “the play” that influenced the outcome of the game. It was 2 and 20 with close to 2:30 left in the 4th, 21-21. The previous play, Tipton nearly intercepted the option pitch. It’s how EB got in that situation. Even though Eastbrook stopped Tipton on their previous drive, they were very gassed and Tipton was not, and had some momentum. On the pass, a Tipton defender hit the QB at the moment he threw the pass, two Eastbrook receivers and two Tipton defensive backs were going for the ball. The two Eastbrook receivers hit each other while going for the ball. The ball was not caught. One Eastbrook player had the awareness to quickly grab the ball as he was rolling over. Now, here is where my heart goes out to the officials and the team who does not benefit from the call. The one closest to the play did not signal the catch, and he is the one you can see in the video clip. The sideline official is the one who called the complete pass. Unfortunately, it was missed… There was no doubt that he questioned whether he made the right call or not. For the record, I am not complaining about the call. The game went like it went and it ended the way it did. He made the call and we had to live with it. Like I said previously, it was a very well played game between those two very good teams. I don’t know the officials, not sure we have ever had this crew before, but I wouldn’t consider this great officiating, the call was missed, period. I will say they let the kids play, not a lot of penalties throughout this game… And, I am sure they are great guys! Here is my question back to you… How do you do justice for the players, coaches, schools, parents, and fans in such a game? Are we behind in using similar means to verify calls as the “next level” does? I believe high school football, and other sports, are progressing enough that it has to be considered. 17. The ball is clearly seen on the grass by the possession arrow next to the 20.
  18. That was a GREAT high school football game… Both teams played to their potential with very few mistakes… The coaches for each team had great game plans… The atmosphere was exciting… The teams were evenly matched with athletes… It was as good of a match up as you can get, and both teams delivered. Heartbreaking to lose a close game, but Tipton can say they played every down with no regrets. Good luck to Eastbrook.
