Unfortunately in a lot of 1A and 2A programs around the state, football is becoming a dying breed. It’s too easy for kids to say they just want to focus on basketball or baseball all through the year, or quite simply just not play sports. Thats fine if you are going to the gym and getting 1,000 shots up a day and living in the weight room 365 days a year. Kids aren't actually doing it tho. What's even worse are the coaches in different sports are encouraging kids to be 1 sport athletes. Just an absolute shame.

You’re not wrong. Sadly in most cases more and more, they just don’t play anything.

    My way too early picks:

    1) Adams Central - 3rd time is a charm for the Jets.  They head into 2A with a blue ring.

    2) Providence - South sleeper.  Young team in '22 bounced by Lutheran in the regional.  They avenge that loss in '23 in what will be considered an upset, but really isn't.

    3) Lutheran - Name a single 1A/2A team in the last 20 years that graduated 15 seniors and were as good the following year.  I can't either.

    4) South Putnam - Strong program, but won't make it through a tough sectional.

    5) North Judson San Pierre - Advance based on returning experience, despite losing a lot to graduation.

    6) North Decatur - See above.  I think they would have won it all had they made it past Lutheran in semi-state.

    7) Carroll (Flora) - Someone has to win sectional 43.

8 ) Sheridan - Someone has to win sectional 45.

    9) South Adams - Gets beat twice by big brother.  Again.

    10) Milan - Not much size, but scrappy.

    North:  AC over NJSP

    South: Providence over North Decatur

    State:  AC over Providence

North Decatur graduated some big pieces. I think they take a step back.

There was a time when Indy metro would have been mercy ruled by the likes of Penn, Snider, Ben Davis, Carmel, and Warren Central. Balance of power has made a major shift and now it's Indy metro doing the dominating with programs like Carroll heading down that same path.

Snider has slowly dropped from 2200 students to 1800 over the course of three decades while the percentage of free lunch students continue to rise. That being said, they're still a strong program with one of the better coaching staffs in the state. The 5-5 covid year was really they're only down season. Add to that the rise of Carroll and less is being said about the Panthers. They're still on solid footing and look for them to compete with Valpo and North Side for the right to represent the North at Lucas.

Agreed on Snider, but once they get to Indy… the metro schools are a different level. I don’t care who the north sends down, if they face a Indy area team, it’s like showing up to a gun fight with a knife.

I remember the good ole days in the 90s on the region we used to get the south bend news and it seemed like Penn and Jimtown were powerhouses with massive rosters

It’s not a Penn or Jimtown problem as much as it is a northern problem, Hobart to Snider and everyone in between. The Indy metro area is light years ahead of us all.

Not sure about LaVille and Triton...LaVille returns some quality players but they only return one OL, lose 85% of their offensive scoring in Dewitt and Smith.  Having LaVille in week one might be beneficial for Bremen.  Don't get me wrong, LaVille will be a tough game for anyone, they just will have a lot of kids contributing for the first time at a lot of position at the varsity level.  They will get better as the year progresses for sure.  As for Triton, they will not being playing with one of the states leading rushers in Schue.  He decided to not play.

What is up with these kids choosing not to play?

I assume 1A will look about like it has last 2 years

    1. Lutheran

    2. Adams Central

    3. North Decatur

    4. North Judson

    5. South Adams

    6. Sheridan

    7. Covenant Christian

    8. Providence

    9. Tri

    10. South Putnam.

I'm not as well versed in the North so maybe someone is losing alot im unaware of. Does feel we will have a 3 peat of Lutheran vs Adams Central.

North Decatur graduates a ton of talent, doubt they will be a top 10 team.

yes and no. NP outgrew the old NSC; when the NSC disassembled NP, Glenn, Bremen, Jimtown didn't have much of a choice other than landing in the NIC. Not ideal but it worked for the time being. It was pretty apparent that it was going to be a temporary conference affiliation for certain members and honestly lasted a little longer than I originally thought. The NIC is NOT the best fit for ANY of the old NSC schools and with Elkhart forming and Mishawaka leaving it's created a bigger gap between the big schools (Elkhart, Penn, Adams) and medium sized schools (NP, St. Joe, Marian, Riley, Washington, Jimtown).

Unfortunately, NP sits in "no mans land" when it comes to conference affiliation. You have the NCC that's just a little too far to west to be apart of (man would it be great to play Hobart, Lowell, Andrean for a conference title every season) and you have the NLC which would be way more realistic and doable to the east.

I said it before and I'll say it again, but this is the most balanced/stable conference's the michiana schools could create:

Penn, Elkhart, Warsaw, Mishawaka, Goshen, Adams, Riley, Washington

Northridge, Northwood, New Prairie, Plymouth, Concord, St. Joe, Marian, Jimtown (or if CMA wants to play)

Bremen, Glenn, LaVille, Wawasee, Tippy Valley, Knox, Rochester, Fairfield

On paper I think you’re correct. But gate receipts also need to be considered.

I understand your point, and never said I'm a fan. But there has been programs that have ended regular seasons with losing records in Indiana and made long runs. Usually because they were one of smaller schools in bigger conferences. At some point Indiana will most likely change it's all in concept, but until then this is what we got.

I don’t believe so. They want to keep the all in concept the same for all sports. You change football are you going to ask the same for basketball or soccer or baseball or volleyball or golf?

So if those 3 count it as JV games, would that mean their varsity forfeit their conference varsity game against Clay? So would each of these 3 start out with a lose in conference and does Clay start their season 3-0? I'm just not seeing how they can cancel a conference game and it not count as a forfeit. Someone help me out on this.

Probably. But I don't have the answer.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think a school can play 2 varsity games a week. So did Clay agree to just play a JV game and cancel the varsity game? If not how can a team just decide not to play a conference game? If someone skips a varsity game, is it considered a forfeit? Interesting situation going on with Clay closing and those 3 leaving conference next year.

They will probably count it as a JV game and Clay will count it as a varsity game.

  11. Demographics are changing drastically in the state and the trend will continue for the forseeable future. Every pocket of the state is seeing changes. The size of families is part of this, this generation is having less and less children. Economic factors are also shifting and rural and old rust belt cities are seeing an exodus. Some pockets of the state are seeing growth, while others are seeing an outflow. The confrence changes we are seeing are more or less a sympthom of this. Traditional 1A schools are now 3A. Some 4A and 3A schools are now closer to 2A. If I was a betting man, I would wager a guess that we will see more changes for years to come. I have no issue with it, school admin have to weigh their options and give their students the best home to field teams on their equitable levels.

Track, cross country, baseball and softball, wrestling, basketball, tennis, volleyball, golf.  Basically everything but swimming and gymnastics.  Not all schools participate in all sports.

Argos offers Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, partial Cross County, no track.
