13-17 for 201 and 3 TDs no picks against Lapel in Regional tilt last week.6'2 165 and a junior... not as big as Willis... but he's not some 5;9 freshman either. I'm amazed how Noah Bryant had 176 yards rushing in Monrovia's 1st meeting and then had 48 in their sectional meeting. Also....Wilson clearly is a monster running the ball, and lots of athleticism happening at wide outs... not to mwntion 6'7 250 McHaney and 6'5 230 Kennerk up front...

Linton will absolutely need pressure on the QB and not let him slip out ala Greencastle's QB.... With all that speed and talent on Lutheran's receiving corps I can't expect to cover them while the QB scrambles. Obviously there have been concerns there. The South Vermillion game was how we will have to come out.. but I think Lutheran is a different talent level all together. Our Kids won't back down...not in their nature, and they won't give up if they get down. We will have to be able to move the chains, eat the clock and get scores to offset Lutheran's offense. I know they can run as well....I feel good about our run D. I know the weather is likely gonna be a factor. I will be in he broadcast booth.. my first trip to Lutheran.

I thought we were talking about end of the game...FG or not... that was way too far out and chancy. I see the discussion is about going for it at 14... a 31 yard shot earlier in the 4th... yeah... that would have been much more thought...3 more points would have mean 24-16 and linton would have had not only scored... but gotten the 2 points just to tie.

Spot on Bobby. I seriously didn't think they would consider a FG... too much can go wrong. I figured they'd keep grinding it out either using the clock to the end or scoring. And man...#1 Garrison was gone... I thought he was endzone bound... and Oliver running his down AND making the tackle without any doubt won that game as much as anything. I did wonder how BC would deal with grass field...that was wet from rain all week. Just as I would be concerned about Linton playing on Turf... altho we have been on turf more this year on away games. Like MOnrovia...the grass field...practicing in grass, dealing with mud... we do it all year. I did see Linton guys slipping as well. It affected both teams...I did see Brave runners try to cut back and go down... I saw McBride slip on the 2 point play and his knee definitely was down... and I know we won by 1 so that's naturally gonna be a topic.. but it was early early on. I agree on the holding call. I see it looks legit, but as has been said.. you could call holding on about every play LOL. It was a killer to Linton tho.. wiped out a huge TD play going into the half with BC getting the ball to start 3rd. Going down 21-8 I really thought that was it. Can't forget the pass play to Oliver that looked like sure score inside the 5 that Hehman jarred out and was a touchback... Jesse Voigtschild # 8 refused to let it be so... altho the whole team responded.

I am only now recovering from Friday's Linton win. But I do know Lutheran will be heavy favorite. Linton will have hands and legs and guts full dealing with Lutheran Speed and Passing attack. We've been in this position before with the Saints. It's just awesome to still be playing....

Saw a lot of action last week at Greencastle. 7.0/1.0/0 Walker and James seem to be in about every special teams tackle with Andrews and Sparks. Miners have featured the passing game much more prominent in 2024. With Oliver at WR, along with Feltner it has given Linton a couple guys who can make plays and helps to open up the running game more. Yes, there are a lot of 2 way guys going with Linton. Depth has been an issue all year, and avoiding injuries key. 8 guys play both sides of the ball. There are guys who can come in an spell one or two of them..but at this point I doubt much changes. #44 is a freshman who played a lot in week 1 but broke a leg in the 1st JV game. he was back on the field last week.

QB 17 Micah Sheffer 11 6'3 175 FB 29 Grayson Cassidy 11 5'11 190 WB 40 Gregory Hutcheson 12 6'0 190 WB 1 Preston Garrison 11 5'9 145 WR 10 Easton Branaman 12 5'11 160 TE 4 Lane Pendleton 11 6'5 180 Sheffer is 45-83 for 741. 7 TD 2 Int. Garrison has 3-8-100 Oddly their stats don't include TDs... which there have to be a bunch... 40 Hutcheson is their mule. 121 carries is 28.8% of their 420 rushing att. He as 1,260 yards, 10.4 per touch! He had 396 and 366 yards in each previous season, so this must be his year. He's had 5 100+ games, his high being 193 yards on just 9 touches vs Silver Creek. Sheffer at QB started as Soph as well... definitely a runner and big at 6'3 175. He had 131 rushing yards against Paoli. #1 Garrison is next up with 39 carries 595 yards, a whopping 15.3 per carry. He has had back to back monster games with 141 against Paoli, and 133 last week against Tell City on just 4 carries. 29 Cassidy lines up almost on the line in front of the QB....Looks like he could be snapped to... but he has only 6 carries (35) all year. When they pass... it's #10 Branaman (and there are 3 Branamans on the roster!).. with 19-304 yards, #4 Pendleton is huge at 6'5 180...he lines up as a TE, and he has 11 catches for 235. Hutcheson has 8-86, Garrison 6-159. LT 55 Jason Disque 12 6'2 225 LG 68 Sloan Stuckwisch 11 6'1 235 C 71 Drew Shelton 11 6'2 245 RG 60 Jairdyn Kiser 12 5'9 235 RT 56 Ty Brown 11 6'0 225 Notice that they are not giant. That means they are very quick. With BC's offense there is a lot of movement. A lot of pulling... and #29 leading the way too... Thh QB Sheffer, Garrison and Cassidy will lead into the hole ahead of Hutcheson.. in addition to the OL... so...its power... with the idea of having more bodies that you can defend. North Knox kinda did this the year they ran over us. but you have to have the talent to do it.. They do... year in and out. Other Offensive guys: 15 Evan Stahl 11 5'9 170 20 Brock Dean 10 6'1 155 28 Jack Pace 11 6'0 175 26 Landon Ault 10 5'11 150 12 Trevor Branaman 11 5'10 170 27 Hunter Troppe 10 5'9 145 Don't imagine we'd see any of these guys unless someone gets hurt or needs a rest. 28 Pace has 48 carries though, 323 yards, #12 Branaman 41-318. Stahl and Dean each 20_ for 170+... but I suspect a lot of these guys have seen action because most every BC game has been blow outs. Defense LB 29 Grayson Cassidy 11 5'11 190 LB 31 Owen Wischmeier 11 5'11 175 LB 28 Jack Pace 11 6'0 175 DE 78 Caden Wischmeier 11 5'11 200 DT 66 Joe Roberts 11 6'2 255 DT 76 Isaac Hutcheson 11 6'5 285 DE 54 Cameron Markel 12 6'0 200 CB 3 Rochaun Hehman 12 6'0 175 S 20 Brock Dean 10 6'1 155 S 23 Jaxson Johnson 11 5'11 150 CB 1 Preston Garrison 11 5'9 145 This is what I saw last week Tell City and the week prior with Paoli. They must be pretty harsh on the stat keeping for tackles because all the numbers are low. However--- it could be that these guys didn't play nearly as many snaps because of the blow outs.... The leader tackler is #76 Hutcheson...he's huge, and must be #40's brother? 77 tackles, 18 for loss 5 sacks. Must be a load at DT. #29 Cassidy is next with 64/11. He,ad #1 Garrison are the ONLY 2 way players I see for the Braves. Roberts (66) at the other DT is 3rd with 47/23 and 2 sacks. #54 Markel at DE has 40/13 with safety #20 Dean also at 40. #23 Johnson has 3 interceptions. #31 Wischmeier is in the middle of the LB corps... but just 23 tackles (3 ints too). Once again... the opponent has a strong kicking game. #8 Nathaniel Conyer, a soph, has 48-54 PATs to his credit (88.9%) and is 2-2 in FG... not sure the distance. They even have another kid who is 6-6 in PAT (#7 Mason McKeown). The Punter is the QB Sheffer; Conyer the kick off guy. We have never played Brownstown Central. We are so similar in many ways. Linton used to rarely pass, every play was just grind. This is also a rare occasion that our schedule strength is higher than who we play! We are at 205 they are at 225 in rankings ,but Sagarin still has the Braves at 74.69 over-all, with Linton 63.12. BC with 13 sectional titles all coming from 1995 onward. Coach May came aboard in 1993 had a 5-4 season then 8-3 in '94 and The Braves have not come anywhere near a losing season since. May is 312-64 in his 31st year. 19 of his 31 seasons they have won at least 10 games. The only "Down" year I see was in 2022 with a 6-5 year. The other area that differs with us is that they have never gotten past the Semi-state barrier. Linton has 11 Regional Titles, and has made it to the state championship game twice. The Braves have 3 regional crowns, but have fallen in those 3 semi-state games. The closest they came was a heartbreaking 41-40 loss to Lawrenceburg in 2016, and a 24-16 loss in 2008 to Heritage Christian. The Schedule certainly started easy for the Braves, a lot like our last 3 games. Corydon Central was 3-7, Charlestown 2-8 and Eastern Pekin 1-9. But CC is 3A, C-town 4A. They also faced 5A Seymour (A natural rivalry), 4 A Silver Creek and 3A Scottsburg. In fact they only faced a 2A team twice before sectional. They took care of 9-3 3A North Harrison (9-3) 41-3. Scottsburg (7-4) 42-7. The only game BC scored less than 40 was 27 against Seymour...who scored 0. Everyone talked about that 47.3 per game scoring...but more amazing is the 8.3 points allowed per game. Paoli put 25 up, but surrendered 48. Paoli was undefeated coming into that game, and the Braves had 464 yards of rushing....rushing only. 3 players with 100+ yards in what was a huge statement game. The Rams had the most yards by far of anyone against Brownstown with 162 rush and 178 pass (340 total). Scottsburg had 193 passing, nothing on the ground. North Harrison had 153 rushing, with a kid having 100 yards...the only one all season... but all three were hammered. Last night I decided to really dive into Brownstown games. I learned a little more: Seems 29 Cassidy hasn't been the blocking back most of the year... and 15 Stahl has been much more involved that I gave credit. Looks like 15 and 12 (T.BRanaman) alternated at that position most of the season. I didn;t see any of Silver Creek game, but the 1st 7 games 29 was never at BB. I saw 29 at LB coinciding with 31 (Wischmeier) evidently being sidelined... 31 clearly the starter in the MLB but the North Harrison game 31 was out... and 40 (Hucheson) /29 alternated until 31 came back in Paoli game. 29 has been BB starting in the Paoli game, 12 was active on both sides but not since 31 is back. I see he is the holder on PATs. I haven't seen 15 either on the field last 2 games (I did see him in street clothes on sideline vs TC). speaking of which.. 16 (Sweany) started week 1 at corner....but he's been in street clothes ever since. The lines..both O and D have been the same all year! 28 (Pace) and 20 (Dean) have seen more action at WB than I gave credit for... the both spot 1 (Garrison) on some series. One game I saw 12, 29 and 15 as LB's (Switz Co). I've seen wildcat with 40 direct snap with 29/20. I've seen the unbalanced line with 10 (E.Branaman) lined up beside 4 (Pendleton).. which looks odd as hell LOL. I've seen 17 (Sheffer) throw some nice passes, and 10 and 4.. make great catches. Looks like 31 has a good sized cast on his right arm.. i assume that was the injury. The lineups I post earlier were valid the last 2 games. But they've done through some changes to get there. The line has been the same from game 1 through game 12. On both side of he ball. The QB Sheffer does a spin move when snapped he ball...some times he spins all the way around and goes oppose the flow. He is also very involved in the blocking, as he will lead into the play. They don't pass alot but it sure looks like 17 can throw. Pendleton #4 is 6'5 180 at TE. 10 is fast and athletic with good hands. I also saw a lot all season of the Blocking Back get the direct snap and make big plays up the gut. 15 was that guy most the year, along with 12. 29 has only been at BB for a couple games. I don't know 15's status...he wasnt on crutches or with a cast when I saw him on sidelines... so he may be back this week. I'd image the Roy is wet...and slippery. Could affect both teams traction both in running and blocking.. not to mention throwing and catching.... special teams.... Ball protection will be big tonight! A side note to all of this... When Dad got the axe at Sullivan... of course they wanted him to resign, and he declined.. but I regress... He did get other job offers from the area. He took me with him on to visit a couple of them ... Paris, Il... Linton.. and Brownstown Central. I can recall sitting in the car in the parking lot. Dad came out and said well.. the guy who had this job before was killed in this parking lot... LOL... not really funny.. but at the time I was like.. well.. we don't want to come here..

In the SW7 Days... that's all we heard too.... a schedule of small 1A teams pretty much our schedule.. course we ourselves were 1A. South V had a great team. They had their chances against Linton... 2 early redzones.. and another at the 21. Had they scored that opening drive it would have ignited that fan base that truly showed up...

what an atmosphere it was at the ROY. The SV folks definitely showed up. might be the biggest opponent turnout that I've seen locally..... miner D was just on target. Serious pressure on Dom didn't allow him to see his targets...but the DB's for the most part did awesome. 1 blown deal...which resulted in a score. Miner offense couldn't be stopped. Everything that had to happen for Linton to win... happened. SV had short field many times. Red Zone 0-2 21 yards line 0-1... Linton had three 90+ grind it out drives all for points. Definitely the more physical team was in Red. No Question Garzolini could throw... he put a couple right on the hands in crowded situations. He tried to get time in the pocket by moving around. Wallace Weir and Coleman all made great catches. No running game didn't help the Wildcats. Linton's Voigtschild had game of his Miner Career 200+ rush yards. I was also impressed with 25 Shyrock and 59 Higgins on the defensive side. Rough night for Vermillion County.... Congrats to SV on an amazing season....10-1.. best record in history I believe? They can be proud. hurts now ..but they did alot this year and they will be remembered for that for years.

Ahhhh I get to talk football with my buddies in the WRC.. how I've missed you! Well... I will tell you I didn't expect the...um.. Visors... to come out of that game with the W....but I am suitably impressed. They keep coming back..answering, and now that I'm digging into their season... the passing numbers are truly astounding. Multiple 5 and 6 TD passes in games... 400+ yards... multiple receivers who can make plays. It's no secret that Pass Defense is an achilles heel, and hard to defend when you don't see that level of passing much. That's the thing... Pass D is so much like life... you can be spot on 9 plays and then the 10th someone blows assignment and a kid is streaking for a score. How Linton responds to that will be what I want to see. THe offense will have to be able to drive and be very physical in doing it. This is a rare year where our passing game has been important, so the rushing numbers are lower... but there still are solid skill guys out there who can break a run from anywhere. Like SV with Garzolini, SHyrock, Coleman, Weir, Wallace and Hill... Linton has McBride, Voigtschild, Goodman, Smith, Feltner and Oliver. SV is the bigger team..OUr biggest kids are Gennicks at 6'2 and 250 and Andrews at 6'2 250. I see Wildcat OL is 6'2 240, 6;6 295, 6'0 255, 5'10 180 and 6'4 270. I am sure the 5'10 kid is quick and has his technic good. Defense is where Linton hangs their cap...this year is no exeption. LB's are very good with Andrews and Goodman on inside and Oliver and Smith outside. I remember these SV seniors when we came to Clinton in 2022... I recall thinking these guys are gonna be monsters come 2024. Its gotta be exciting for the school and whole community. The Roy should be an exciting place for football..small town fever.... I can't wait to call the action...

South Vermillion with an incredible win... they earned a ton of respect from me, and I'm sure a lot of folks...who like me, wondered about schedule strength come time to march deep in post season. I say this with the complete memory of people saying the same thing about Linton year in and year out when we were in Southwest Seven and on a huge run of unbeaten seasons etc I remember the frustration. The back n forth with the Vikings was awesome, and I thought NP had gotten the win with that last score so late. The poise Dom showed, and the receiving unit and Oline as well... that was truly an awesome thing to watch unfold. I know it was terribly hard for NP and their fans... but this senior class from SV is in uncharted territory. Linton came out strong against Sullivan, jumping up 14-0 quick... and up 30-7 at half. That's how it ended... so the 2nd half wasn't as dynamic. Defense for the miners was very stout... but I have to admit Sullivan's QB didnt play due to concussion on the final play of regular season. Defending the pass with SVwill be a task. Miners will have to be able to put points up, and hopefully in doing so utilize time off the clock and keep #1 off the field. Clearly... he doesn't need time lol... 43 TDs against 4 ints is impressive. I also think Miners need to pressure and hit the QB. Greencastle has to be favored against BC... and I honestly know little about the Eagles. Greencastle has been hit n miss, but they may have hit their stride at the right time for sure.

A little late but never too late-- Sectional 39 in Southern Indiana begins friday. A new configuration of teams, but still some old rivalries. 3 of the current top 10 in class 2A find themselves in the bottom bracket. First a little history-- From the sectional 39 roster of 23-24 only 1 team remains! The Brown County Eagles. Brownstown Central, Clarksville, Eastern (Pekin) and Switzerland County got moved to Sect 40 joining existing members Paoli, Crawford County And Tell City. Salem, down from 3A joined them. From 40 to 39 went Mitchell and 2023 2A Runner ups North Posey. Mater Dei went up, and both Forest Park and Perry Central went down. From 39, Triton Central went up to 3A Christel House disappeared from the tournament. From Sectional 37 to 39 came Greencastle, Linton, South Vermillion and Sullivan. I could go on but it gets crazy. I mean 37 is completely new as Cascade went 3A, North Put and Southmont to 34, North Knox to 1A and everyone else to 39. NOW.... 37 has the likes of Lutheran, Scecina, Monrovia, Heritage Christian etc... I guess the days of being in a sectional year after year have gone by the wayside. The draw was what it was. I'm not a fan of blind draw but am a fan of all inclusion. I would think any of the teams that landed in that top bracket are ecstatic about their draw. Greencastle starts off travelling to Petersburg to face the Pike Central Chargers. By Sagarin rankings the TIgercubs are 4th ranked in Sectional 39 (S39) with a 44.42 with the Chargers at 6 (33.03). Schedule strength certainly favors the 3-6 Cubs. They have been up and down, but you gotta think they are feeling confident after a 49-28 win on the road over 7-2 North Putnam in week 8. NP had only previously lost to unbeaten Cascade. This ended a 3 game skid for Coach Stephens. Of those 6 losses, 5 are to ranked teams in various classes- 4A 8-1 Northview, 3A 9-0 Cascade, 2A 7-2 Linton and 7-2 Monrovia, and 1A 7-2 South Putnam. Besides the topple of NP, they own wins over 4-5 West Vigo and an overtime win over 4-5 Indian Creek 17-14. Coach J J Howard's Chargers, in his 2nd year, have a chance to reach 4 wins in a season for the 1st tie since 2016. The big win for these guys was a 22-0 win over 4-5 Tell City. They opened 2-0 with wins over Clarksville 35-0 and 1A Tecumseh 49-20 but those 2 are a combined 0-17. Still, these were games they had lost in the past. Playing in the Pocket meant games with 7-2 3A Southridge and 7-2 North Posey both big losses, and Mt Vernon (3A 5-4) and Washington (4A 5-4) had 20+ point wins. They were in games with 1A 5-4 Forest Park (28-21 L) and 1A 5-4 South Spencer (27-19 L). It's about a 2 hour jaunt to PC high school and it will be just the 3rd road game of the year for Greencastle. History wise- The Tiger Cubs last sectional crown was in 1991 (2A) after they had captured 1A in 1990. Pike Central is still searching for a Sectional Title in football. They actually played for a title in 2022 after going 1-8 in the year, reaching the finale with 2 wins before a 569 loss to Owen Valley in Championship. The two lowest sagarin ranked teams drew each other in the next matchup. 5-4 Brown County hosting 1-8 Mitchell. By Sag numbers the Eagles would be favorites with a 16.78 to 2.41 rating advantage. But we are all 0-0 with fresh starts in post-season, and a draw that could have been bad for either team has to give each hope. In Coach Tony Bell's 1st season, the Eagles vastly improved from a previous 2 year mark of 1-19. Granted, their wins came against a combined 4-38 opponent WL. They were outmanned in games versus 7-2's North and SOuth Putnam 59-6 and 55-6. Also lost to 4-4 Cloverdale big 42-6 and 4-5 West Vigo 50-29. Wins came over 3A Owen Valley 30-21 1-8 Crawford County 24-0, winless Irvington Prep 57-0 and...well.. Mitchell. The Blue Jackets are also under a 1st year coach with Zach See. Their lone W came against 1-8 Crawford County 45-21. that 45 was about half the total points they scored all year. Looking at their scores for year, the one game that looked competitive was the 21-12 loss to the Eagles in week 6 at BC. In fairness, there were losses to 8-1 1A Springs Valley, 6-3 3A Scottsburg, 5-4 1A Perry Central and to 9-0 Paoli. Neither team could have asked for a better pull of the ping pong balls because a win in this game sets up a game with either Greencastle or Pike Central... which is better than perhaps a game with unbeaten South Vermillion, or 7-2 Linton/North Posey. But Post Season is where crazy things can happen. I suppose it's the whole point of the blind draw. historically- Mitchell has a 1983 Sectional title, Brown County has 1 as well in 1995 (3A). The bottom bracket starts off with a doozie. Probably the game in Sectional 39 on Friday Night. Unbeaten South Vermillion to host the Vikings of North Posey. The Wildcats under long time coach Greg Barrett have run the table in 2024, Barrett's 8th at SV. They average 44.0 points a game while holding opponents to under 10 (9.9). They have Clinton fired up. Yes, I am that old. It's not that SV hasn't been successful in recent seasons because they have- 8-2 last year, 7-3 in 2022, 7 wins in each 2019 and 2017. I've not seen a 9 win season in their history...or at least as far at John Harrell goes back. I've not seen SV hoist a sectional trophy in school history. They've come close a couple times- 2019 losing to WeBo in championship 56-14, in 2003 losing 34-6 to Cloverdale as well...in a 2-8 season under Rene Foli. The last 4 years have been one and done with losses to Cascade (24) and Linton (23). They will have the sentimental pull for the region. North Posey has been on a run since a 9-3 2021 season, with another 9-3 season in 2022 both ending with losses in sectional championships to Evansville Mater Dei. We, in Linton, can sympathize. in 2024 Coach Waylon Schenk led the Vikings as well as all of Poseyville, Griffin, New Harmony AND my momma's home school of Griffin (Go Tornadoes) on a ride to the state finals. Unfortunately they ran up against Fort Wayne Luers who won with a dominant 40-3 win. Still...as with all small towns hitching up for the ride, it's always a lifetime experience that gets talked about for generations. Coach Schenk had his Vikings hot with a 4-0 start with a 7 point win over 5-4 4A Mt. Vernon 35-28, 48-7 over 1-8 Princeton, 28-16 over 5-4 1A S.Spencer and 34-14 over 4-5 Tell City. The first big test was a failure in a 43-7 loss to power house 8-1 3A Heritage Hills. The 2nd big test was another blowout loss in a 42-0 battering from 3A 7-2 Southridge at Huntingburg. The Viks beat up 1As Tecumseh, Forest Park and 2A Pike Central last week 45-14. Course it goes without saying that both the Raiders and Patriots have put the hurt on many a quality team over the years. Folks will say they won 5 games against teams with sub 500 records, and 2 others over 5-4 teams. They still beat those teams with dominance. You can't talk about schedule strength without mentioning SV's trek in 2024. They have been in the Wabash River Conf for as long as I can remember. That is a conference mainly of small 1A schools, and thus their schedule locks them in 7 games vs 1`A schools. So you know schedule comparison favors North Posey. Not that SV plays nobody, and again, in these games the Wildcats generally dominated. The put the only loss on 8-1 North Vermillion easily 48-6, and had a dominant 49-0 win over 4-5 West Vigo to start the year. The only games that looked liked challenges were in week with 3-6 Sullivan, a 34-25 win, and a 20-7 win over 6-3 1A Riverton Parke. They also dispatched 5-4 Covington 48-14, and 4-5 Fountain Central 55-14. Look at the Sagarin numbers and you see dang near even numbers. SV 123rd in state at 57.53 NP 124th t 57.46. That makes it a pretty tough pick. I would imagine Anderson Field would be hopping rowdy which should give the Cats a boost as well...but the Vikings have been in big games, so I doubt that rattles them. As mentioned, no titles for SV, but NP has 5 including last year. but you gotta go back to 2005 for the next one. The Football Gods must have conspired in Football Heaven to pit these two long time rivals against each other in the opening week of Sectional 39. If you live south of Terre Haute, West of Bloomington and North of Evansville you probably are aware of the Sullivan/Linton rivalry somehow...be it Golf, Tennis, Girls Volleyball, Baseball, ....anything. Purple and Gold, and Red and Blue just don't mix well. This will be the 112th meeting between these schools, a mere 15 mile trek separating them on Indiana 54. For the Arrows, this is divine opportunity to end Linton's season at the Roy in Linton in the face of adversity. The Miners have taken the last 7 meetings, including a 42-20 win in week 4 at the Roy, as well as 10 of the last 11 games. Some of these games have come down to last possessions, or a single big play that changes the outcome. In terms of Rivalries, it's hard to beat this one; especially in small town football. Sullivan fan block showed up at the earlier game with a huge sign stating "Nobody Likes Linton...But you"... a play on the infamous Youll Like Linton signs coming into town. Well that may be true. Coach Mike Caton is in his 3rd year at command of the Golden Arrows, and it surely hasn't gone as he'd like it. A promising start with a hammering of 1A 2-7North Knox 48-6 bode well, but they lost their starting QB in that game. Next up a battle with the aforementioned Wildcats of South Vermillion fell to the black n gold 34-25. thus begun a tough stretch of 4 total losses, but very good competition- 8-1 4A Northview 35-0, 7-2 Linton 42-20, and 9-0 3A Cascade 42-6. that's a WL opponent of 33-3. Against lesser quality Sullivan thrived and dominated in back to back wins over 0-8 3A Owen Valley 56-0 and 2-7 3A Edgewood. THey've been in battles in the last 2 games of the season, each 1 score losses- 4-5 Indian Creek 21-14 and 4-5 3A West Vigo on a last second 1 yard plunge for the Vikings to pull out a 12-6 win. The Arrows have h ad recent success, having won a sectional in an 8-4 2020. They also played a whopper of a game against Linton losing 33-24 in sectional finale 2022. Reality says that this 3 win season is their lowest since a 3-7 2010 season, but no doubt the chance to turn the tide on Linton will have them more rejuvenated that had they drawn anyone else. Linton opened up with a doozie facing Marion Local from the cornfields of western Ohio. Who were they you ask? Just a small school from Maria Stein that had won 3 state titles in a row, 10 of the last 12 years! They came in with the nations longest win streak at 48, which now stands at 57. Certainly a challenge, and the Flyers demolished the Miners in front of the home folks 45-6. Like Sullivan, Linton saw their returning QB leave the game with injury. Linton's turning point came the following week in a 22-20 tough hard fought win over always stout Monrovia (7-2). They would have run the gauntlet except for a hickup at Boonville where the Pioneers (4A 4-5)nipped the Miners by one 21-20. Now, to be sure you don't accuse me of favoritism...I will point out that Linton's wins have come against a combined 11-34. Slightly improved if I count Phalen's win in week 9 as the Falcons were 5-2 I believe (16-36). But yes, Linton played only 2 teams with +.500 records, but as I have said with other teams...they took care of business when they were supposed to. THe Miners had a lot of success as a 1A school coming up the ladder of respect. They moved up to 2A with success factor in 2017 after 14 1A sectional titles, and it took to 2022 to get their 1st 2A title. They did reach the championship last year losing in an eternally memorable OT to Southmont 36-34 at Linton. Mater Dei has been the thorn in post-season 3 years straight 2019-2021 as well as Regional 2022. Coach Brian Oliver will undoubtedly have Linton ready in his 12th season at the helm. The thing is....these two teams know each other so well. 112 meetings. There really are never any surprises. Linton has the top Sagarin ranking in this sectional at 64.34, but the 3rd lowest Schedule Rating. THe Miners are 89th in the state of all classes in that rating. Sullivan is 5th in S39 at 42.30with the 2nd toughest rated schedule in this group behind only Greencastle. You have to look at the first meeting as well... I know a 42-20 win looks convincing, but Sullivan had taken the lead with 32 seconds before half on a 77 yard pass play, and were going to get the ball to start 3rd. All the momentum in purple. But Voigtschild returned the ensuing kick off 95 yards in one of those momentus talked about forever plays that put Linton up 14-12. Linton came out strong in 3rd with 2 scores to jump up 28-12. But as usual the Arrows did not pack up shop. They would score with just under 10 minutes left and bring the game to within 8 on a 2 point run. After a Miner punt they drove to the Miner 32 before imploding with a couple penalties and a bad snap. They punted to play field position, but Linton drove 69 yard scoring at 2:10 and taking a 36-20 lead. Linton would add a late TD after Sullivan fumbled the following kickoff for the final margin. Total yardage wasn't a blowout--366-295 Linton. First downs 20-16 Linton. miners with 177 rush 189 (surprisingly) passing... Sullivan 155 rush and 140 pass. It sets up for a classic rematch between old rivals whose older brothers, Dad's, uncles, Grandfathers....all could have played against each other at some point in this long history. Should be mighty electric at Roy WIlliams. There ya go.. just like the old days of super long posts by your old pal Miner Pride!!! Be Safe!!

Yeah... it was a challenge... I think we all knew that going in. 18 seniors...almost all going 1 way... but... I'll say we had a chance.. they drove initial drive 74 yards to score but had to work for it. We then started at our 7, converted 3 third downs, and go to their 37. We missed a wide open receiver that could have tied things... then failed on a 4th and 8. Then the bottom fell out. Next play 63 yard bomb to a wide open receiver. We had melted down on the coverage. All downhill from there. Int's fumble.. blocked punt... just one thing after another. They all put the Flyers deep in Miner territory, and blamo before you knew anything were were down 42-0. They scored on the half's final play as well. Add to it... starting QB/OLB Paul Oliver is hurt on a scramble near the end of the half as well. Shoulder injury that kept him on sidelines 2nd half.. but I'm told it was precautionary. Kudos to Marion Local tho... they didn't play a starter in the 2nd half. Starters would have certainly rolled in a couple or more scores. And I think they could have passed at will. We couldn't get to the QB at all. We did OK against their rush. ended up with a late score for us that felt good...and kept their 2nd's out of the endzone. YOu always look for the positives... but even more you learn the negatives. Look who gives up... who seizes an opportunity. I'm sure this week was gut check time with Monrovia next up... whom gotta be the best non ranked 2A school out there (!!!).... WB Jessie Voigtschild stood out... 90+ yards... ran hard to the bitter end... and ILB Corey Andews seemed to be in on every tackle.... it will be an interesting week. Nothing but praise for Marion.... they nearly filled the visitor stands.... nearly 4 hour drive. I saw no ridiculous dances or overly celebration... just hand the ball to the ref with some handshakes.. and to the sideline. I really like that program and wish them well on their quest for 4th straight title in Ohio. As much as it pained me to watch my Miners get humbled.... it is still better than pummeling someone 73-6 year in and out. Other than letting every kid get to play... there's nothing to be gained but a W,,,,

well.... I know Linton has wanted to beef up the schedule for years....and it's getting harder to find opponents.... with no disrespect to Phalen.... that is a useless game for us. last year we brought in St.Theresa from Decatur IL... and that was a heck of a game.... This year.... well... I think we know what we are getting in to. This is the type of team and community that is hard to root against. Back to back to back state titles in Div VIII Ohio. 14 state championships starting in 2000.... the most in Ohio. Current 48 game winning streak---longest in Nation. 66 players on roster from a school of 286... 18 seniors 32 total upperclass. They have 53 kids on their junior high roster. Check out this NY Times article posts on the pro football hall of fame page https://www.profootballhof.com/news/2019/12/how-one-ohio-town-keeps-football-thriving/ Not only have they won the last 3 VIII titles and who knows if they might have won in 2020 (covid).. but they also had a state title streak from 2011-12-13-14, runner up in 15, won again in 16 and 17... runner up in 18... then won again in 19... 20 was covid.. and the've reeled off the last 3. That's an incredible run. I don't have stats on the Flyers... just watched what I can. They look to be deep and have just 4 maybe 5 2-way players. Return QB Justin Knouff at 6'2 185 and tremendous skill guys in Drew Lause 6'0 205 Victor Hoelscher 6'2 180 and Griffin Bruns 6'0 175. They lost a RB who was player of the game in the final last year... but PArker Hess 5'11 185 looks solid..and with lead blocking from FB Ethan Heitkamp 5'10 190.. they are powerful. Up front....starts with center Colten Ahrens at 6;3 220, left side with Winner at 6;185 G and Muhlenkamp 6;4 240 at T... the on the right Grieshop 6'4 250 and Kinkler 6'3 196. Winner and Muhlenkamp both play DE on the D. Speaking of which... they ended their year with with 3 shutouts....we're talking playoffs... allowed 1 TD in last 6 games. allowed 1 TD or less in 13 of their 16 games. And I'll throw in that their return game is potent... seems like I've seen 4 or 5 punt and kickoff returns end up TDs... so that's something to watch. in short.... they are damn good...and deserve the accolades and ranking of #1 in VIII in ohio.. and I think got a rank of #10 overall in state... For my Miners. We got players. We return alot talent... I mean... having 3 players on the all state class 2A preseason defense is pretty cool. I think defense will be our strongpoint at this point until the offense can catch up. We did return Paul Oliver 6'4 215.. still just a junior, at QB... 1,164 yrds rushing last year with 17 TDs. WB Jesse Voigtschild 5'7 165 is back for his senior year (941 yrds rush in 23). But we graduated some stellar experienced linemen, two of which headed to play in college. Tonight will see the inaugural start and 1st genuine varsity appearances at Center, guard and tackle for 3 Miners, and a couple others that will get rotation as well. At least a couple are gonna have to grow up quick tonight. Unfortunately we lost a couple kids in addition to graduation that transfered....both starting spots, and that creates a depth issue in some cases... but 6'2 250 senior HAnk Gennicks along with 6'3 215 Corey Andrews will anchor the line and be the focus I'm sure of defenses. We also lost both FBs TO graduation but feel good with 6'2 185 Russell Goodman back there... he doubles at ILB. He missed a lot of 2023 after leading the team in tackles as a freshman. The passing game has to be more of a factor in 2024. it accounted for 74.33 per game last year. SE is the one spot we have depth at even with starter Cooper SMith 6'2 175 moving to WB with Voigtschild. 6'3 170 hayden Felter returns.... He and Cooper combined for 19 catches last year. BRaylon McBrde 5'9 165 senior and 5'9 155 Collin Webster will both be out at SE... McBride could see QB snaps... WIll Oliver have time to throw will be the question against a very stout Flyer D. LInton is down to 40 players on the roster this year. There are only 6 seniors, and 11 new freshman faces. The big class is the 16 juniors. A game like this is a monster test for week 1. For years Linton's week 1 was a yearly heavy one sided affair that saw the bench clear and starters in street clothes by 4th quarter. Other than seeing live action and oiling the machine a bit... nothing really gained in that. When we had Southridge for 4 years... it was a much much better scenario for us. The Raiders were and always are a tough opponent. I was glad we finally got a single W in our last meeting and miss playing them. St. Therese was coming off a state championship in Illiinois last year, and it was a dog fight that saw Linton win...and set the impetus for a great year. Marion Local is driving a good 3 hours plus and I am sure they will want to show everyone what they are all about. We will have some areas where we need to see how kids react. But regardless of the outcome, it will be a learning experience for sure... and with a very tough Monrovia on deck...a long road trip to Western.. .and Greencastle and Boonville after than.... we will need to solidify and keep healthy to reach the post season with momentum!

Miners host Marion Local........ from Ohio. in week 1. A huge task to open the season. CANTON — The winning streak continues for Marion Local. The Flyers won their 48th consecutive game and took home their third consecutive Ohio high school football state championship with a 38-0 win over Dalton in the OHSAA Division VII finals at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on Saturday. Marion Local has won 14 OHSAA state championships, most out of any program in Ohio. The Flyers take home the Division VII trophy after winning the Division VI state championship last year and Division VII in 2021.

Seeing as how Mater Dei took us (linton) out for several years in a row...I with they'd of been up a class a while back! not that we'd of been at Lucas.. but a couple of those teams woulda given anyone a battle.
