  1. Linton to face unknown in Regional Tilt with Lapel Bulldogs. First things first. Linton has reached the Class 2A Regional for the 1st time in program history. The Miners moved up because of the IHSAA “Success Factor” in 2017 after back to back 1A state final appearances, and the big win in 2016. I know I’m not the only Linton fan who feels there were really good Miner teams in these 2A years that could have made deep runs in 1A. Linton stayed in 2A due to enrollment (by last count we were 8 students above the 1A Cutoff), and did not back down from the challenge. Coach Oliver and the Miners have had to deal with Southridge (before they bumped to 3A) and Evansville Mater Dei both in their 2a Sectional losing to the Wildcats in sectional championship with an 8-4 2020 team, and last year’s unbeaten team losing 28-27 in semi-final. 2019’s team was 9-1 before a cold journey to the Reitz Bowl ended the season. The move to Sectional 37 opened up new horizons, but it was anything but a given that Linton would waltz through that group of 8. The Miners went the hard way facing 7-2 South Vermillion (47-21 Win) then hosting 7-3 Southmont in what was a 35-7 halftime blow-out ending with a Miner interception at Linton’s 15 to hold of the Mounties 35-29. That list of 8 included Linton’s oldest and bitterest rival in Sullivan. The Arrows at 7-4 were geared for upset hosting Linton at Sportland Field, and held a 24-21 lead going into the 4th quarter. However, the Miners ground out a score, and Hunter Gennicks closed out the Arrows with a 35 yard run for a 33-24 Linton win bringing Linton’s 1st 2A sectional title back to Miner City. Tim Miller is in his 12th year at Lapel, starting in 2012 with a 2-9 season. For 4 years the Bulldogs finished under. 500 but yet won a sectiional in 2014 losing to LCC in regional play 54-12. From 2016 onward Lapel has had winning seasons, losing to Ritter in sectional championshin of ’16. They won back to back sectionals in 2017 (9-4) and 2018 (8-5) win wins over Shenandoah each year, then being eliminated by Eastbrook on both occasions. The 2020 edition of Lapel winning another Sectional beating Frankton, but one more their nemesis Eastbrook took them out 46-13. Miiler, who has a 70-57 record all at Lapel, replaced Nate Andrews who won sectional in 2008 (10-3 losing to Ritter in regional) and Woody Fields won in 1995 with a 5-6 squad. Lapel has never advanced past the Regional level. Linton, in Class 1A for most of their history, has 14 sectional titles, 10 Regional wins, and 2 trips to Lucas Oil to their resume. However, until last week, post-season success hasn’t resulted in hardware. Linton has gonee 6-5 in post-season play since moving to 2A. Like Sullivan last week, the 7-5 Bulldogs cannot be judged by their W-L record. Those losses were in week 1 to 3A 8-3 Hamilton Heights 34-7, and back to back losses in week 4 and 5 to unbeaten 1A’s Indy Lutheran (52-14) and North Decatur (43-18). The other losses came to 5-6 Eastern Hancock 29-22 in week 9 and 7-4 Heritage Christian 42-38 in week 7. The Bulldogs avenged both losses with a hammering of the Royals 41-13 in Sect 38 semi’s then a big win over the favored (by many) Eagles of Heritage Christian 21-20 last week. Lapel has quality wins over 6-5 Shenandoah 33-21, & 6-4 3A Heritage 32-37, as well as the sectional wins over EH and HC. They beat 3-7 Frankton and 4A 2-8 Jay County but each wasn’t big margin (21-7, 29-21). The dead hammer 4-6 Winchester 49-19 to open Sectional 38 action. Linton has wins over 7-5 Sullivan twice (40-20 & 33-24), 4A 8-4 Boonvill in a 50-40 shootout, 42-7 over 1A 6-5 North Vermillion 64-14, 7-4 1A South Putnam 35-10, as well over a 52-27 win over a full strength Monrovia team in week 3. Monrovia plays in regional action tonight against unbeaten Owen Valley. Add to those quality wins the victories over 7-3 South Vermillion and 7-4 Southmont. The Miners blasted though Parke Heritage (1-9) North Daviess (5-5) North Knox (4-6) and Eastern Greene (2-8) by a combined 202-20. The Miner offense averages 46.5 ppg , 426.7 per game, 305.1 of that on the ground. The Offensive line is led by 3 seniors with Center Nathan Watson (6’0 255) and guards Wrigley Franklin (6’3 225) and Aiden Giles (6’3 200). Soph Hank Gennicks (6’2 250) and Junior Jacob Breedlove (6’7 300) at tackles. Last week we saw Junior Ty Boyd (6’1 210) and Freshman Russell Goodman (6;2 180) at Tight End on occasions. They will face off with Lapel defensive front and LB group that has allowed 350.3 per game, 27.3 ppg. I don’t have anything stat wise from their Winchester win but I suspect that would lower those numbers since the Bulldogs stuffed them 49-14. The Bulldogs have DE’s Chandler Lowes (11 6’2 180) and Matt Carpenter (11 6’5 195) with DT’s Jaydon Rodriguez (11 5‘9 215) and Anthony Prater (12 6’2 320). The Linebackers are Bruin White (12 5’10 175), Ethan Hewitt (12 5’10 175) and Luke Sundheimer (12 5’10 170). The Db’s are Rylie Hudson (10 5’10 185) and Landon Brown (11 6’0 165) at corner, and leading tackler with 93 Tyler Lutz (12 5’10 170) and Nick White (1 6’0 150) at safety. After Lutz, B.White has 88 stops with 9 TFL, and Carpenter with 72 stops and a team high 12 TFL. Sundheimer adds 67. They will have to contend with Hunter Gennicks, the Miner QB (12 6’0 195) who leads Linton with 1,707 rushing yards, 158 carries, 10.8 per run and 29 TDs. He is surrounded with other weapons who have proven each to make big plays-Hunter Johns at RB (12 5’8 180) 109-712-12, and wing backs Braden Walters (11 6’5 190) 63-419-4 and Jesse Voigtschild (10 5’7 150) 59-446-5. Gennicks has passed for 1,459 yards on 105 of 193 (54.4%) 19 TDs to 3 picks. He had a season high of 209 yards mid-year at North Daviess. His rushing total bolstered by a 239 yard performance against Southmont, and nine 100+ efforts. Considering he and other 1st teamers got little in any action in 4 games, those number would certainly be higher. Linton has a trifecta of height in receivers led by 6’4 205 senior Logan Webb with 33 catches for 367 yards and 4 TDs. 22 catches each for Paul Oliver (9, 6’3 205) and Walters (11. 6’5 190). Oliver has 5 scores, 372 yards; Walters 5 TD 393 yards. You can’t discount Voigtschild with 10-187-2. When you look at Lapel’ offensive numbers it becomes apparent that Senior Tyler Dollar (5’10 185) is central to their success. He has 239 carries of the team’s total 379 (63%) 2,108 of the team’s 2,977 rushing yards (71%). 26 rush TD (team 38) and 8.82 per carry. He’s coming off a 21 carry 251 yard performance against Heritage Christian, and has 6 games (of 11 played) of 230+ yards. He missed one game, and looks like limited action in the loss to Eastern Hancock in week 9. He looks to be back to 100% with 507 rushing yards and 6 TDs in the last 2 games. He is the workhorse with over 21 carries averaged per game, eclipsing 30 a couple times, and is a 191.55 per game. This means their O-Line has done a great job, and it seems soph Karson Kinsinger (6’5 315) is one to watch at left tackle. Keegan O’Connor (12 5’9 225) joins him at LG, J J Baxter (11 5’10 260) at center. The right side is manned by G Ryan Carpenter (12 5/10 230) and T Chandler Lowes (11 6’2 180). The Bulldogs also have a supporting cast in WB’s Nick Witte (11 6’0 150) and Ryline Hudson (10 5’10 185). Hudson adds 3 TDs on 36-274 rushings, Witter 9-93-2. Bruin White (12 5’10 175) filled in for Dollar against Jay County and had 94 yards rushing. For the year he’s a 43-295 with a TD. The Bulldogs turned to a freshman at QB Devin Craig (6’0 150) in week 4 (against Lutheran of all opponents). I don’t know if it was injury that forced that move or not. Luke Alexander (11 6’0 190) was QB the 1st three week with 210 yards passing on 22-55 but 0 TD and 4 picks. He also seemed more a runner with 18 carries for 60 yards and a TD. Craig has 67 yards on 18 carries over his 9 games. He has however thrown for 1.469 yards a 62.5% clip on 130-208. 9 TD and 9 Interceptions. Colin Jannings (12 6’1 175) and Logan White (11 6’0 150) are wideouts as well as Landon White (11 6’1 150) but it is Witte with 70 catches-over half the completions!- for 833 and 3 TDs. Hudson, also at Wb, is next with 38 for 414 and 3 TDs. Jannings is 23-196-0, Lo White 7-93-2. Clearly Lapel can pass the ball, but it looks like the wings/slots are the target, particularly #20. The Miner D allows just 17.2 ppg, 223.7 per game… and only 86.0 per game rushing, with 2.63 per carry. Something certainly has to give! Monrovia, behind the power running of Belcher, is the only opponent over 200 rushing years, and only 3 other games did opponents crack 100 yards. Pass Defense has been tested but has weathered the storm, allowing 147.2 per game. However there have been games where receivers have found success with Southmont’s 273 a couple weeks back. Sullivan aired it out 33 times -last week hitting 16 for 179, but only 2 passes out of 11 20+ yard passes connected. The efforts of corners Jesse Voigtchild, Hunter Johns and Hayden Feltner (10 6’1 165) were solid along with safety Hunter Gennicks and Braden Walters. Linton will rotate a 3 man front line with Jr Ashton White (11 6’0 195), Hank Gennicks (10/6’2 250) Aiden Giles (12’ 6’3 200) and Ty Boyd (11 6’1 210). LBs are led by leading tackler Russell Goodman (1, 6’2 180) with 108 stops 10 TFK. Christian Shonk (11’ 5’10 180) and Braydn Cox (12 5’10 185) alternate at the other ILB. 6’3 205 FR Paul Oliver (16 TFL) and 6’3 205 SR Wrigley Franklin (15 TFL) are forces at OLB. After Goodman, White has 87 stops 11 TFL, Hunter Gennicks 86, Franklin 80, Giles with 69. Other factors--- Cold Weather… and 2.5 hour bus ride for the Bulldogs…. Kicking game??? Go Miners
  2. I'm gonna admit it. I know little about the Lapel Bulldogs. I know they are always pretty good, and have a terrific senior RB in Tyler Dollar with his 2,108 yards rushing. Considering Lapel as a team has 2,961 yards rushing it's clear that Dollar is their bread and butter. I figure Craig must be a good athlete as well if he's starting at QB as a Freshman... was he there all year? 1,469 yards passing but what stands out is his 62% accuracy. 3 Bulldogs with over 20 catches each in Witte, Hudson and Jennings... Schedule wise obviously it's an indication that Lapel is playing their best right now... revenge wins over Eastern Hancock and then Heritage Christian. Dollar with 251 on the ground last week. HOnestly though, their regular season losses to those two teams were close. Their other losses were to solid teams... 8-3 3A Hamilton Heights... and unbeaten 1A's North Decatur and Lutheran. Like Sullivan last week, 7-5 isnt an indication of the talent Lapel has on the field. I know Lapel has never won a regional so I'm sure they are hungry. Linton hasn't had much success at 2A, with last week's win being our 1st in 2A... I also know I am glad not to be travelling the 2+ hours to Lapel... I can't fathom how Lapel is in the southern regional... I don't mind of course....Mater Dei has been our demise so many times. I see some big boys on the Lapel roster...soph tackle Kinsinger 6'5 325, Prater at DT 6'2 320 and just 4 seniors starting on offense it's a relative young team. DEfense is led by LB Bruin Wilson with 109 tackles 9 TFL... safety Lutz with 95 and 8.5 and DE Carpenter 72/12. The Miners of course I know all about lol. Gennicks at QB with 1,707 yards 29 TDs.... but add key roles from Voigtschild and Walters 400+ yards and Johns at RB with 712 and 12 TDs. Hunter has about the same in passing as Craig at Lapel, 1,452 and both about the same attempts (gennicks 105-193, Craig 130-208)... LInton also with 3 recievers over 20 catches each (Webb, Walters and Oliver) Linton has been led by freshman Russell Goodman at ILB, and junior Ashton White as of late at NT. 6'3 DE's Wrigley FRanklin and Paul Oliver (another freshman) having great seasons as well as Gennicks at safety a key role in Miner defense.

Anyone care to chime in so I can learn more about Lapel... I'd appreciate it!
  4. oh yeah.. .this kind of talk is always going on. I have yearly info that ranks the teams in teams of offense defense etd... but it sometimes is not fair really. The 2000s schedule with Dugger Wood Memorial, Upstart Eastern Greene, North Central were almost always over at the coin toss and certainly by the 1st quarter... Recent schedules have been much more competitive.. Interesting the 2022 and 2021 score. If 2021 would have had the addition of Walters as a soph....which would have opened up some passing options .... or if Eslinger would have been a senior this year with Goodman at ILB and WB....
  5. Monrovia has been playing much better with Belcher back healthy...
  6. I also wouldn't say that... Altho that 2016 team was pretty awesome. Both teams are very similar, and I have been asked countless times my opinion on who would be tops between Meurer and Gennicks. They both were outstanding on both sides of the ball, and both made plays to single handedly win ballgames in their Miner career. It would be a heck of a game... and i'm not gonna try and pick. LOL. I don't see any 70+ margin on either side. same with 2012 team. Tyler had 1524 yards and 32 rush TDs in '16...and had great support with Kendall Williams and Keaton Cox (soph), and bulldozer in the Blue Mule..aka Mason Garrett at RB. Hunter is at 1710 rush yards at this point in 12 games, with 29 rush TDs. He also has solid backing with Braden Walter and Jesse Voigtschild (a soph), and HUnter Johns at RB... Johns and Mason both with big motors, Garrett more pure power and Hunter with a huge burst of speed... GEnnicks has benefit from a tri fecta of height in the passing game.. 6'3 Oliver 6'4 Webb and 6'5 Walters...as well as Voigtschild from WB. At this point Hunter is 105-192 with 1449... 19 TDs and just 3 picks. 2016 did not throw nearly as much.... 117 attempts... 56 complete, 1402 yards... 19 TDs and just 2 picks. 2016 didn't have near the options...Williams and Cox each had 13 catches...Bill Smith had 10. For 2022 the pass has been much more prominent and effective. Webb with 33 catches, Oliver 22... and Walters with 22 as well... all three well over 300 yards apiece. Voigtshild adds another 10 and 180+. I can see by the numbers that 2016 didn't give up near the pass yards. Sullivan as always it seems, had 191.. but honestly... I don't see the teams on that schedule being pass heavy teams other than the Arrows and perhaps Eastern Greene. Tecumseh as well. So it's hard to make comparisons. I know that the LB group from '16 was pretty stellar with Avery Gentry, Ian Fonseca, Williams Cox...and luke Miller too. Meurer was certainly a huge factor at FS and Linton used 3 DBs then. I think Gennicks, Walters, Voigtschild and Johns have the ability...and I think they showed that much better this game... plus Feltner and Webb give depth we didn't have in 2016. I feel Ashton Miller this year reminds me of Chance Howard at NT on D... '16 had some big talent up front with Clayton Walker and Mason at DE's...Levi Jerrels with Howard at DT. Russell Goodman has really impressed as a Freshman at ILB this year, but it's hard to top that group of LB's in 2016! 2022 has 3 year starters in Giles and Franklin on the O line and definitely a high point talked about coming into the year... 2016 wasn't as big, all seniors, but averaged 327.7 per game on the ground..... Hard to answer than inevitable question. but 70 points better? Don't think so. My gut says the battle would be the '22 Oline and Gennicks against those '16 LB's and DE's... '22's ability to pass... but could '22 contain Meurer as well as the inside power of Mason. Lemme fire up my NCAA Nintendo and see.... !!
  7. I wouldn't say that. I haven't gone thru the numbers... yet... but Sullivan put the ball in the air 34 times... hitting 16.. but... most of those completions were short. The last 2 Sullivan possessions Linton was not going to let anything deep happen so we gave up short 8-10 yard passes. Up 27to 24 then 33 to 24 that was an easy call. Of those 34 passes... 11 were of 20+ yards only 2 were completed and both TDs. Voigtschild was especially good at using the sideline and not letting anyone by...plus a big pickoff at the Miner 5 just before halftime. Both Gennicks and Walters made hits from safety that broke up passes. Feltner, a soph, came in at CB for an injured Hunter Johns and did well. I'll take that percentage anytime against a very good passing offense with a very good running QB. He ran 15 times for 85 unofficial...and 9-59 was in 1st half. No question turnovers played a role. but cashing in on them is imperative. Gennicks' 16 yard TD run would have been a TD from anywhere on the field. Just as his last run from 35 would have gone the distance from anywhere. The only gimme was the high snap giving Linton the ball at the Arrow 6. The other Arrow fumble resulted in a 3 and out from Linton. Linton also gave Sullivan the ball on a F near midfield just before the half but the defense answered the bell. Gennicks won this QB battle with 166 big rushing yards 4 rush TDs on 24 carries, 11 of those moved the chains including several 4th and short. But credit Voigstchild (7-55) and Walters (9-48) in that run game that came to 307 yards. Adds Gennicks 10-21-113 and Linton had 420 to Sullivan's 269. When Linton had to dig in and move the football down 24-21, they did it. They went 80 yards to open the game with a score... and the 8 play 74 yard drive that put Linton up 27-24. Also had a 16 play drive late in 3rd that was blown up on a grounding call and a failed 4th and 7. Earlier reached Sullivan's 22 and again Sullivan stopped us on a 4th and 7. Yes Sullivan had a drop on a 3rd down late that would have moved chains... but yes Linton did the same thing on a 3rd and long that was clearly gonna move the chains. Yes the arrows fumbled twice, but those were the result of big solid hits from Oliver on the 1st, and Gennicks on the 2nd. LInton was the more physical team all night in my obviously bias opinion, as well as getting a few yellow hanky's for genuinely solid physical hits. I don't think you can hit anymore in football. I definitely have respect for the Sullivan program. Rowdy Adams is a gamer Luke Adams almost unstoppable at WR, and Cody Adams a monster on defense. The SUllivan folks know Linton, and what Linton does as well if not better than anyone....to beat them twice in one season is pretty awesome. I think the Miner kids heard all about week 4 all week leading up to this game...not only from Sullivan folks and social media, but even from Linton fans worried about the pass defense given the first meeting as well as with Southmont in the 2nd half last week. We faced some good passing teams in South Put and South Vermillion the prior 2 weeks and advanced too. As I said to start with.. I think the pass D wins this game. Toward the end Rowdy could not find the open downfield receiver and had to go under or run... and the Dline and ILB's were able to keep him from busting the long play. The offense had to work for what they got all night...but numbers don't lie. 307 rushing, 113 passing indicates Linton did move the ball. Congrats to Coach Caton... Sullivan is certainly much better than a 7-5 record indicates. I am very happy for this group of LInton Seniors...I think losing this game and not bringing home the sectional crown would have stuck in the crawl forever and put a damper on an otherwise terrific year.
  8. True... Triton Central is always competitive for sure...
  9. It was sure an amazing environment at Sullivan Friday....one of the ages and one that will once more be talked about! But Linton wins... and I feel the pass defense is responsible for the win with their play all 4 quarters.
  10. I though the pass defense won the game for LInton. Gave up a couple TD passes...but I think Arrow Folks and others (even me) thought Sullivan would have a field day passing....but it didn't pan out that way. Linton with a big stat advantage and made the plays in a lot of adversity and calls that went against them. Gutty effort again by Linton. 4 quarters to win too.... they drove the field when they had to, and made the defensive plays keeping Rowdy Adams in check the majority of the night.
  11. That's the thing... 2A teams like Luers, LCC, Mater Dei, Andrean....play much bigger teams and stronger schedules that the actual rural 2A schedules... so when it's time for post season... they are certainly the favorites. I was surprise at the Triton Central win... but TC is always a tough out as well.
  12. I am sure GCSN wil...wait... I don;t think Sullivan allows the video stream... come to think of it... I believe that's what happened last year regular season at Sullivan. We do audio at MEdia Five.. which is WQTY 93.3 FM.. but also at www.wqtyradio.com.. or www.network1sports.com. I realize it's not video... but we know football and the history and have the facts n stats. Any stat you hear on GCSN comes from my pen LOL... Greg Orman, whom I do consider a good friend...has done a lot with GCSN for Greene COunty Sports...county wide and I appeciate that... but I feel we will always be the source for LInton FOotball even tho far more people watch the stream. I've had a million people ask if GCSN could tap into my broadcast but it's just not possible We are unfortunately 2 actual competing entities. I've even spoke to the station about trying to delay our signal to try and match their stream so the places that want to...could use our audio... but it's a cluster. The only remedy would be that I join GCSN.. but I'm only interested in Linton Football... altho I'd do any Linton sport to be honest... I don't really have the time for all the basketball games or trips... but I tell ya... you never know what the future hold. I love doing MIner FOotball... and when Jared and the Lintonian were doing the Video Stream and using Media Five Audio we had a killer thing going... I wish it woul have continued. It may be that Sullivan is offering VIdeo.. but it would be through IHSAA and you'd have to pay. I'll check and see what I can fin
  13. I think Sullivan will get there scores and get their yards, but we have to make them earn in... none of the big long pass plays for touchdowns. ... but the real question will be can they stop the Miner offense? Linton needs to click as well... need their passing game to be a factor so Sullivan can't just key on Gennicks.
  14. Well.... lemme just say.. .that 40-20 score is misleading. I'll be the first to admit it. Sullivan did not have Rowdy Adams at QB to start in that game, and the backup threw 2 INTs in their 1st 2 possessions... one went to the house, the others put us at the arrow 20 and we scored... we were up 20-0 early. Adams in the game changed things as Sullivan was able to move the ball. They got 1st and goal at the 2 before the half.. and Linton stuffed them all 4 downs. They also were at the 7 earliers and failed on a 4th down. They key in that win for Linton was that Sulivan could not slow down Linton's offense. Southmont was able to do that in later portion of the game. Linton DID have a solid drive in the 3rd and looked to be heading down to score were it not for a hold that pushed them back to 3rd and long long long.. then Southmont seized every ounce of momentum. I know Arrow fans absolutely feel they are the better team. Their passing game is very good, and we have had trouble with it all year. We had been doing better but that 2nd half with Southmont was a step back, and perhaps that's good for the Miners because I'm sure alot of work will be put in that aspect this week. At the same time I know the Arrows are likely licking their chops at having Rowdy Adams 4 quarters....because he ended up with 219 yards passing and 70 rushing.
  15. Tale of two halves. Linton 1st half 35-7 with Gennicks 6 carries 219 yards 3 Scores... to all Southmont 2nd half 22-0. 191 yards in the air, and keeping the ball away from Linton's offense. Souhmont scored on 48 yard pass with 2:13 In 3rd after Linton had stopped their first 2nd half possession 3 and out only to muff the punt return gving the mounties life. Then did a pooch kickoff that they recovered at Linton 35... quickly scoring 1st play of 4th qtr to pull within 35 to 21. Linton had three punts in 2nd half...no offense. great adjustments by Mounties.. and all the momentum... hit a 64 yard bomb for a score with 7:20 left.. botched the pat snap but hit the pass for 2... 35-29. Stopped Miners... punt with 5:30 left... drive from own 38 to Miner 27.. 3rd and 7 .. miner freshman LB Goodman with pick return to southmont 25 2:12 left. Miners get 1st down.. run out time at southmont 14. Holy Moly...
  16. I think this Southmont team is pretty solid. Their competition level is pretty good... I mean would anyone in Sect 37 beat let alone compete with WeBo or Tri-West... or Lebanon and usually Danville? Linton is always a physical team but I'm sure the Mounties saw that in those teams as well. Linton hasn't come out fast in the last 2 games for whatever reason. However the defense comes around after the 1st drive, and neither South Put nor South Verm were much a threat. Of Course Hunter Gennicks has put the team on his shoulders with long TD runs to give Linton a lead and then the Miners wear down the opponent. I don't think anyone should or would underestimate Southmont. I know most everyone had Linton rolling through this sectional when it was announced... But Southmont is very solid... Sullivan is very solid and I think Cascade is certainly better than their WL indicates. Linton and Southmont have only met twice, and it’s been 24 years ago that Linton won at the Roy in 1998 24-21 to even the series 1-1 after a 61-13 Mountie win in New Market in 1997. Southmont does not own a sectional crown in their school history, having only been in three sectional championship games losing all three: 2017 41-14 to Brebeuf Jesuit, 2008 24-8 to North Montgomery, and 1998 47-14 to Western Boone. The Miners are still looking for their 1st sectional title in 2A. They had become a 1A power with 12 sectional titles from 1997 to 2016 and 7 semi state appearances before finally reaching the 1 finale in 2015, then winning it all in 2016. Linton has reached a sectional championship game just since being moved to 2A. The winner of this game faces the winner of the other semi-final matchup with 6-4 Cascade travelling to Sullivan to face the 6-4 Arrows at Sportland Field. It’s an intriguing game with Sullivan’s losses coming to unbeaten 10-0 Linton and 10-0 Owen Valley, 7-3 Indian Creek in OT and to 4A 6-4 Northview. The Cadets losses to 8-2 Triton Central, 9-1 Indy Scecina, 10-0 Indy Lutheran and in OT to 3A 6-4 Speedway.
  17. Thank you Sir. By the time I write these things I don't need rosters or stats for my broadcasts!! It's also nice to go back and look at these a few years down the line... along with game recaps... but I guaruntee I will sooner or later deal with wrist injury.... not to mention playing guitar for 45 + years!
  18. Miners to Face Southmont in Sectional Semi-Final It will be quite the night for Jock and Nancy Hannum as they watch their son Desson, or “Doc” as most know him, lead the Southmont Mounties on to the Roy. Desson has been at the helm of Southmont since 2007 with this his 16th year being one of his best. A win Friday ties his 8 win seasons in 2009 and 2010 as best under his tutelage. His over-all W-L tally is 75-94. Jock, as any Linton high schooler knows, was a fixture on Linton’s campus and naturally a well-known figure at Roy Williams Field over the years. I’m proud to say that my father hired Jock and always had such positive things to say at the mention of Hannum’s name. The humor in it was Jock was a Dugger Bulldog class of ‘68, 5 miles to the west and always, particularly back ‘then’, a bitter enemy to Linton’s Miners. Desson was also a Dugger Bulldog and yearly faced the Miners and certainly knows what style of football Linton plays. The Mounties have for the last several years made a summer jaunt to Linton to scrimmage the Miners, this past in a 3-way meeting including Riverton Parke (who is enjoying their best season in years at 8-2). Southmont plays in the tough Sagamore Conference that includes typical juggernauts Western Boone, Tri-West, Danville and Lebanon. Southmont is the lone 2 school in a conference of 3A and 4A schools. The Mounties opened with 5 wins with big wins of 1A 4-5 Fountain Central 55-12, 2A 4-6 North Putnam 42-21 and 4A 1-9 Frankfort 60-7. They escaped 3A 5-5 North Montgomery 14-12 and defeated rival 3A 3-7 Crawfordsville 26-13. They had done this same thing in 2020 with 5 wins to begin the season only their next 4 to the Sagamore big dogs. However 2022 the Mounties served notice with a 28-14 win over Danville (3A 4-6), their first over the Warriors since 2015. A game that saw Southmont put up 367 yards on the ground. Western Boone at 9-1 proved to be too much as WeBo rolled to their typical 38-7 win for the 1st loss of the year. 4A 6-4 Lebanon pulled out a 20-13 win at New Market but again the Mounties racked up over 300 rush yards in the loss and had about 100 yards more offense than the Tigers. The monster stretch of games ended as 3A 7-3 Tri-West, who hadn’t lost to Southmont since 2011, proved superior with a 35-0 win. Southmont made a statement with a 31-0 win at home in the opening salvo in Sectional 37. Linton had also blanked the Warriors in week 7 42-0 in the only common opponent the 2 share. Linton ran for 202 in that game, as well as 173 in the air while Southmont ran for 193 and threw for a season high 254 yards. A big difference was Linton shut NK’s run game down (40 yards on 32 carries) while the Warriors has 199 on 38 in their meeting with the Mounties. Now, that could have been against second teamers as well. Both the Miners and Mounties are run orientated teams but with the ability to pass with several options to choose from. Both teams also feature very good defenses. Linton gives up 14.67 ppg Southmont 17.2. Linton has run the table as they did in 2021 before losing to Evansville Mater Dei 28-27 in the same week in Linton. The Miners also made a statement last week on the road with a 47-21 win over 7-3 South Vermillion. They had defeated 7-3 South Putnam on the road to close out the season 35-10. Linton had quality wins over 6-4 Sullivan 40-20 and 4A 7-3 Boonville 50-40. The Skill players at Southmont are dominated by seniors as well as size at all positions. They run the ball 74.8% of their offense with 2,165 yards, 216.5 per game and feature 2 main weapons in FB #9 Wyatt Woodall (11, 6;2, 225) and HB #23 Carson Chadd (12, 6'4, 210). Woodall the workhouse with 789 yards on 172 rushes with 12 TDs and Chadd at 660 on 80 touches with 6 scores. They are augmented with HB #5 Sam Line (12, 6'2, 185) with 21-110-0 and QB #4 Nick Scott (12, 6'0, 175) with 36-86-1. Scott has 10 TD passes and 4 Int’s in a year passing for 892 yards on 50 of 126 attempts. However that’s just 39.7% completion rate however, he’s coming off a season high 12 of 20 for 3 scores and 254 yards last week and had a 12 of 18 night for 247 in week 2 vs North Putnam. Line, at HB, leads the team with 13 catches for 207 and 2 scores. The Mounties have height across the board with two 6’4 guys Chadd, who has 7 for 138 and 2 scores, as well as WR #88 Seth Tolliver (12, 6'4, 200) with 6 for 46 and a score. WR #24 E J Brewer (12, 6'2, 185) has 9 catches for 131 and 2 scores. Woodall adds 5 for 167 and 2 more scores. Still 2 more 6’2 receivers get in the mix with #18 Kyler McCandless (11, 6’2 180) and #13 Aaron McMasters (10, 6’2, 205) another combined 8 for 124 yards. You can see there isn’t really one favorite target for Scott. The Offensive Line starts with Soph Tyler Davis (#73, 5; 9 215) LG #67 Waylon Gomez (11, 6; 4 250) and LT #70 Kasey Line (11, 6’2 245) with RG #62 Will Cody (Jr 6’3 250) and RT #77 Gabe Brenda (10, 6’0 235). They will match up against a Miner defense allowing just 82.6 rushing yards a game (826). They have also faced 57 pass attempts the last two weeks facing spread style offenses. Other than Monrovia’s Brayton Belcher in week 3, no opponent has had a 100 yard allowed rusher, and kept South Vermillion’s Dalton Payton and South Putnam’s Luke Switzer in relative check. Linton’s D features 2 sophomores and 2 freshman in the starting 11, and is led by #6 Russell Goodman (9, 6’2 180) with 87 stops and a full time starter since week 6. #33 Ashton White (11, 6’0 195) moved into a starting role on the DLine at the same time has 71 stops with 12 TFL. #14 Hunter Gennicks (12, 6’0 195) adds 69 from Strong Safety. White is joined up front by #69 Hank Gennicks (10, 6’2, 250) and #56 Aiden Giles (12, 6’3 200) as well as #54 Ty Boyd (11,6;1 210). Along with Goodman at ILB are #5 Bradyn Cox (12, 5; 10 185) and #4 Christian Shonk (11, 5’10 180), with the outside manned by #51 Wrigley Franklin (12, 6’3 225) and #13 Paul Oliver (9, 6’3 205). Oliver lead Linton with 14 TFL, Franklin 12, White, along with Goodman, with 7.5. Boyd had 4 last week to push his total to 8. The corners will certainly be at a disadvantage size wise but have played very well the last several games in the same scenario. #12 Hunter Johns (12, 5’8 180) and #8 Jesse Voigtschild (10, 5’7 150) and likely #15 Hayden Feltner (10, 6’1 165) will be those cornerbacks while Gennicks along with #16 Braden Walters (11, 6’5 190) are safeties. Gennicks has 3 of Linton’s 9 picks (2 for TD returns). Oliver leads in QB sacks with 5, White with 2.5 Franklin with 2. Oliver and Franklin combine for 27 QB hurries, Shonk with another 11. The Miner offense has racked up 2,995 yards on the ground, 1300 of that from the legs of Hunter Gennicks. Behind the line consisting of LT Hank Gennicks, LG Wrigley Franklin, C #74 Nathan Watson (12, 6’0 255) RG Aiden Giles and RT #77 Jacob Breedlove (11, 6’7 300), they average 299.5 rushing per game with 48 rush TDs. The Elder Gennicks (#14) averages 11.1 per carry with 22 TDs of his 117 carries. Like Southmont, the Miners have multiple backs who can each become factors in any ballgame. #12 Hunter Johns came into last week with 650 yards, 12 scores on 83 carries, and left with 6 carries and 0 yards. However Wingbacks #16 Walters and #8 Voigtschild combined for 109 yards on 11 carries, along with Gennicks 175 to put 320 yards on South Vermillion. #5 Braydon Cox, while rarely seeing action at RB, had 6 for 34 yards a score last week. The Passing Attack has been a positive for Linton in 2022 with Gennicks throwing for 17 TDs, just 3 picks while connecting on 93 of 165 for 1,271 yards. Linton has almost always been known as a ground and pound offense, and while still basically the same, they’ve gone to the air for 127.8 per game and throw the ball 31.5% of the time (68.5% runs). The Miners also have height on their group of receivers with 6’5 Walters, 6’4 #23 Logan Webb (12, 6’4, 205) and 6’3 Oliver. Webb leads all with 25 catches (258 yards) with Walters lead in yards on 22 for 393. Oliver has caught 19 for 309, and he and Walters each have 5 TD catches. #8 Voigtschild adds 10 for 187 with 2 TDs, #12 Johns 7 for 73 and a score. The Mounties defense has seen some good offenses with WeBo, Lebanon, & Tri-West and still allows only 92.9 rushing yards per game. LB’s #9 Woodall leads the D with 89 tackles, #23 Chadd with 69. Both Linebackers are big at 6’2 225 and 6’4 210. Soph #14 Dylan Howell (6’0 170) at what they call the Drop LB has an impressive 21 TFL and 8 Sacks#8 Trip Ward (11,6’0 175) has 13 TFL of his 75 stops from the SAM LB, with Rover #11 Kion Cornelius (12,6’2 160) adding 41. #88 Seth Tolliver at 6’4 200 has been a monster at DE with 68 tackles and a whopping 27 TFL and 10 sacks. He’s joined up front at NT #55 Ayden Dickerson (11, 5; 10 260) and DE #67 Gomez. The Defensive backfield is anchored by #24 Brewer (46 tackles) and Corners #18 McCandless and #5 Line. The Kicking game is always something to look at in big games, and both seem to be in good shape. Trip Ward has only missed 4 times in 35 PAT’s for and 88.6% mark, and is 1 of 3 in Field Goals with a long of 32 hit last week. Linton’s Nathan Frady joined the team in week 5 and has been 21 of 30 (70%). He has tried one FG and it was good from 40. Aaron McMasters has punted 27 times for 31.5 average for the Mounties, Paul Oliver for 32.5 but only 11 punts on the year for Linton. Southmont’s Ward has kicked deep on kickoffs at 45.9 per kick with 10 touchbacks. Linton’s Braden Walters averaging 35.1 per kick usually down to the 15 unless he does a squib kick. Both would seem to have dangerous return specialists as Linton’s Johns has 2 kickoff return TDs and with Voightschild teams are leery to kick to either. E J Brewer has a 60 yard punt return for Southmont. Obviously it’s a big game for both teams, and being at Roy Williams Field in Linton should be a benefit to the Miners. To achieve that we once more need everyone to fill the Roy and line the field and make plenty of noise for this group of Miners who have gone 20-1 these last 2 seasons. Linton would be on the road next week regardless of Cascade/Sullivan outcome and of course to get there they must get by the Mounties. It’s time to let Miner Pride shine with the best showing of the year when it matters the most! Go MIners
  19. Yeah I knew that was a big win...I forgot to look it up... Yeah that's pretty good!
  20. Actually,,,that's a warning. 😕 Having grown up with grandparents, Aunts and Uncles from Owensville, FOrt Branch and Haubstadt, even Johnson... I recall when Gibby South formed and wondering what a Titan was. Long live the Kickapoos and Twigs! And I'm just glad to see my Miners in a conversation other than my own posts. It would be nice to see OV compete for 4 quarters and end their season on a good note even if they don't notch the W. Its the standard thing....SOS. No question GS plays a better level of competition that the Pats do. Brown County, Edgewood, Cloverdale don't prepare for GS...altho Washington and Princeton are perennial losing programs. The Pats had close wins with SUllivan and Indian Creek...but gave up a lot, and that makes me think GS will be able to score a lot as well. I must admit to thinking Northview would beat OV...but was surprised in the 28-7 Patriot Win. The Titans have wins over 2 5A schools, Terre Haute South being an unusual 6-3... not to mention Southridge Heritage Hills and a solid Boonville team. And I think VIncennes at 4-6 was pretty good when they clicked. It would be hard to pick OV to pull this upset. But kudos to OV... seniors were 1-9 as freshmen and 3-26 from 2018-2020. Went from 3-7 to 10-2 in Coach Gibson's 1st year. Hopefully being at home in Spencer with I suspect a heavy turnout from the area giving the Patriots an extra push makes this a ballgame. Perhaps the Titans will take them lightly and come out slow... but I don't think OV wins in a shootout, and I don't see GS not scoring a bunch.
  21. It’s really hard to believe that Linton and South Vermillion have never met when you consider all the opponents Linton has faced over their history. However, there were two meetings between the predecessor of South V, Clinton. It’s interesting that South Vermillion was not a consolidation, but an official name change from Clinton in 1977. The Wildcats (of Clinton) did “absorb” some schools (Dana, Hillsdale and St. Bernice back in 1961). They had a several successful teams in their history, and in two meetings with the Miners they didn’t allow a point! In 1972 in was at least a game at 14-0, but in 1973 Clinton destroyed Linton 61-0. That was the last time Clinton/South Vermillion and Linton squared off. Head Coach Greg Barrett came to South Vermillion in 2017 after the Wildcats had endured 7 losing seasons in a row, and he led SV to a 7-3 start. He came from North Putnam where he went 57-34 over 8 years. In 2008, his first year at North Put was 10-1, and in 2010 they made it to state (actually losing 26-14)losing by a heartbreaking one point (28-27) to Ft. Wayne Luers to end a 14-1 season. As far as I can see, South Vermillion has not won a sectional crown. With a win Friday it gives SV their first 8-win season since 2009. They have been in a couple of Sectional Championship games but lost both- 2019 lost to Western Boone 56-14, and in 2004 lost to Tri-West 47-13. There’s no question Coach Barrett have brought an environment of success to the Wildcat Football program having gone 35-25 in his 6th year at South Vermillion, and over-all at 92-59. Since his arrival SV has had four 7-win seasons in his 6 years. The Wildcats are 7-2 coming into the Sectional with their 2 losses coming to 5-4 Sullivan 24-14 in week 2 on the road, and a 19-15 loss to 7-2 Seeger in week 8. Of their 7 wins, two have come again +.500 teams (North Vermillion 5-4, a 35-19 win, and 38-0 over 7-2 Riverton Parke). They have wins against West Vigo (3-6), Covington (3-6) Attica (0-9) Fountain Central (3-6) and Parke Heritage (1-8). The Miners under Coach Brian Oliver, who just achieved his 100th win against 21 losses in 10 years at Linton, have just finished their 2nd unbeaten regular Season in a row. Their wins feature last week’s 35-10 win over 7-2 South Putnam, a 50-40 shootout with 4A 6-3 Boonville, 40-20 over 5-4 Sullivan, 42-7 over 5-4 N.Daviess, and 64-15 5-4 over N.Vermillion. In head to head comparisons the most obvious would the Arrows. In Linton’s 20-point win back in week 4 the Miners ran for 312 of their 381 total yards. 381 was the 2nd lowest Miner output of the year, and probably would be the lowest had the North Knox game not been a running clock. Where Linton’s running game was key in their win, it was 255 of passing that was the most effective against Arrows for SV. That was the biggest output of the year for the Wildcats in terms of passing (17 of 25). However, SV could not run at all against Sullivan (34 yards on 31 attempts) while Linton subsidized their run game with 69 pass yards on 7-12 passing with a TD. As it was in South Putnam’s preview, South Vermillion runs a spread offense with multiple receivers and a single back. Sullivan passed for 224 yards against Linton and ran for 121. Sullivan had 123 rushing and threw for 197 against South Vermillion. It should be mentioned that Rowdy Adams, Sullivan’s elusive QB, was injured in the SV game and missed most of the game. Against Linton he didn’t appear at qb until the 2nd quarter and Linton had put up 20 points by then (Interceptions thrown by the back-up playing a major point). Obviously both teams easily dispensed of Parke Heritage (Linton 56-6 SV 48-0 ) and North Vermillion (Linton 64-15 SV 35-19). SV starts with Soph QB Dom Garzolini (#1 6’0 195) who has thrown for 993 yards on 59-91 (64.8%) passing with 10 TDs and 3 Interceptions. Garzolini is not a scrambler or a runner as we’ve seen with Conner from Boonville, Adams from Sullivan or White from NV, and had -4 yards on 26 attempts. He does have #34 Dalton Payton (Sr 5;10 170) to hand the ball to, with his 944 yards on 100 carries and 14 TDs. He had a 9.4 per carry average. #5 Gabe Clay (Sr 5’9 145) has his share as well with 70 touches and 442 yards with 5 TDs. #25 Alex Shryock is the H back (Soph, 5’9 165) has just 4 carries for 30 yards and no catches. Payton out of the backfield has 11 catches for 200 yards and 2 scores. Leading receiving is #8 Dallas Coleman (Soph, 5’11 168) with 16 for 316 and 3 TDs. Coleman adds 78 yards and 2 TDs rushing. #9 Parker Weir (Soph 5.8 141) has 3 catches and 53-yard rushing with 2 total TDs. Their version of a Tight End is the “Y” receiver and that’s #80 Ryan Straw (Sr 6’0 210) who has 2 TDs on 6-98 receiving. Clay adds 9 catches for 161 (2 TD) while Aiden Wallace (#10, Soph 5’11 135) adds 44-yard rushing and 8 catches for 112 yards. As a team they average 304.67 per game, 192.78 on the ground, 111.69 in the air. Linton is led by Sr QB Hunter Gennicks (#15, 6’0 195) with 1,125 yards at 10.82 per carry (104). He has thrown 148 times hitting on 86 (58.1%) for 1,209 yards and 16 TDs against 3 interceptions. Sr Hunter Johns (#12, 5’8 180) has been solid at Running Back all year with 650 yards rushing on 83 carries (7.83), as well as 6 catches (usually screens) for 73 yards and a score. Between Gennicks (18) and Johns (12) they have 30 rushing TDs. Wingbacks #8 Jesse Voigtschild (Soph 5,7 150) and #16 Braden Walters (Jr 6’5 190) are both involved in both facets of offense. Walters, is his first year of varsity football, leads the Miners with 22 catches for 393 yards and 5 scores, along with 3 scores on 38 carries for 249 rushing. Voigtschild adds 335 on the ground with 43 carries and 5 TDs, but also 2 receiving scores on 10 catches for 187 yards. Sr Logan Webb (#23, 6’4 205) missed a game and a half but was back last week. He has 20 catches for 214 and 2 scores. Freshman Paul Oliver (#13 6’3 205) has been a weapon with 18 receptions for 291 yards and 5 catches. 6’1 165 Soph #15 Hayden Feltner has also gotten in action with a couple catches as well. With all that firepower, the biggest threat still may be in Gennicks ability to move with the ball. He has 188 scramble yards, and his ability to make plays when needed has been something to see in 2022. Each Team’s defense will have to keep big plays to a minimum if not completely stopped. Linton did a great job of that last week at South Putnam with no 20+ yard plays. Miner ILB Russell Goodman (Fr, #6, 6;2 180) has become the leading tackler since being moved in as a full-time starter in week 6. He had a stunning 23-tackle game last week, and over-all has 79 tackles, 7.5 for loss. Both jar Christian Shonk (#4 5’10 180) and Sr Bradyn Cox (#5 5’10 185) rotate at the other ILB. OLB’s have been very good for Linton with Oliver leading the team in TFL (14) and sacks (5) as well as in Hurries (15). Sr Wrigley Franklin (#51 6’23 225) in 3rd in tackles with 56.5 and 11 TFL with 2 sacks. He and Oliver both are leapers and have several passes they have knocked down or tipped or merely forced a QB to alter his throw. A 3-man front features a rotation of Ends Ashton White (Jr #33 6’0 194), Sr Aiden Giles (#56, 6’3 200), Soph Hank Gennicks (#69 6’2 250) and Jr Ty Boyd (#54 6’1 210). White is 2nd in tackles with 64 with 7.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks. He started the year as a back up linebacker but earned his way to start. Giles has 52.5 tackles 6.5 TFL, and started the year at ILB, but moved back to his 2020 position and has been solid. Boyd is, if there ever is a need) the tight end you might see him wearing #9. It changes it seems every week! The Defensive Backfield was tested against the Eagles last week and did very well. They will see much the same from the Wildcats. Johns and Voigtschild are both undersized at 5’7 and 5’8 but their speed and technique are on target. Gennicks and Walters are the safeties, with Gennicks solid in run support (56 tackles 4 for loss). The Miner front will face against 4 juniors and 1 senior on the South Vermillion offensive Line. The lone senior is RG Gus Shryock (#77 6’2 225), and he has Jr Payton Stevens (#78 6’1 261) on his right. The Center is Jr Carter Wood (#68 6’1 190), while the left side has guard Jr Aaron Kersy (#56 6’2 269) and tackle Jr Zach Hess (#66 6’2 300). The Miner offensive line consists of Center Sr Nathan Watson (374 6’0 255), Guard Aiden Giles (Sr #56, 6’3 200) and Tackle Jr Jacob Breedlove (#77 6’7 300) on the right side, while guard Sr Wrigley Franklin (#51 6/3 225) and Soph Hank Gennicks (#69 6’2 250) on the right. The Miners average 435.78 per game on offense, 300.67 on the ground, 135.1 in the air. The Wildcat Defense is led by ILB Ryan Straw #80 (6’0 210) with 75 stops, 7.5 TFL, 5 Sacks> #7 Dylan Hill (Soph #7 6;0 156) joins him, with OLB’s Payton and Alex Shryock. Payton has 48 tackles 5 TFL 2 sacks). Up front it’s Gus Shryock (Sr #77 6/2 225) who has 60 tackles 12.5 for loss 8.5 sacks. Zach Hess (#66 Jr 6;2 300) is 2nd in tackles with 63, 6 TFL 2 Sacks), Logan Fiock Soph #79 6.4 234) had 8.5 TFL 3.5 Sacks, and Will Clay-Faulkner (Jr #81 5;11 157) who had 8 TFL and 6 sacks. The Backfield will have their hands full as well with #9 Parker Weir (Soph 5;8 141) #11 Dylan Conder (Jr 5;10 162) and #8 Dallas Coleman (Soph 5;11 168). Both defenses have 8 interceptions each on the year, 3 from the Wildcats’ Coleman as well for Linton’s Hunter Gennicks. 2 of Gennicks picks went for TDs, actually all three did but one was called by on a questionable flag. South Vermillion has 3 pick-six to their resume- Clay, Hill and Conder. Linton’s Hunter Johns has 2 kickoffs return TDs and SV’s Coleman and Payton each have a KO return score as well. Coleman is an obvious threat, as he also has a punt return TD. The kicking game seems strong as well with South Vermillion’s Dominick Hanson and Linton Nathan Fray. Frady didn’t start kicking until mid-year and is 16 of 23 and has hit a 40-yard Field Goal. Hanson is 2-3 on field goals with a long of 30, and 34 of 37 on Pats One area Linton will need to improve was turnovers and penalties. Linton has 16 turnovers on the year and had 4 in last week’s win. Games can be decided on a single turnover at this point in the season, and certainly losing points or giving first downs due to an infraction can play big roles in any game. For Linton, the whole purpose of the season is to prepare for the post-season. All the work put in is for this time of the year. I’m sure South Vermillion has the same goals. It is yet another long road trip for Linton as well, but they’ve handled that thus far. For the seniors it is now do or die time. Linton with 10, South V with 7. One thing noticeable about the Wildcats are the amount of Sophomore’s on the roster-21. 4 of the 6 skill players are sophomores, and there are only 3 seniors starting on offense for the Wildcats. 5 Sophs start on the Defense for SV. Linton has 2 freshman and 2 sophs starting on defense, and a roster loaded with 20 freshmen. The game will be broadcast on your friendly radio and 93.3 WQTY, as well as streamed audio and www.wqtyradio.net. 22. Week 7: Sect 37 team North Knox 3-3 at Linton 6-0 A big matchup locally between old foes. Linton had won 14 in a row til a loss 27-15 in Linton on 2020. Linton won 38-24 in 2021. NK's losses have come to 3-3 Sullivan,6-0 1A Tecumseh and 3A 4-2 Boonville. All 3 wins have come against a combined 2-15. This is a big opportunity for North Knox to prove they belong in the discussion of post season. Linton took care of then 4-1 1A North Daviess 42-7, after a back n forth tussle the week before with Boonville 50-40. Linton averages 50.7 pp and it's offense has so far not been stopped. NK defense allows just 17.8 a game so something has to give. Both teams played Sect 37's Sullivan, Linton winning 40-20, NK losing 31-17. Linton remains at the top of both 2A Polls. Southmont 6-0 at Western Boone 5-1 A true test for the Mounties, who haven't started 6-0 since.. well .. I don't think they ever have. They had 8 win seasons in 2008 and 2009, but head into the hardest part of their schedule tonight and the following 2 Fridays. 5-1 WeBo's only loss was to 4-2 Tri-West, who Southmont will see in week 8. Western Boone and Southmont have played several common opponents, both winning... but WeBo looks to have dominated Crawfordsville (49-0) and North Montgomery (35-8) while the Mounties, while getting the "W", had 26-13 and 14-12 battles. Both teams doused Frankfort by huge margins. The MOunties defense has been steller (13.2/game) WeBo comes in over 42 a game. And it's a road game. I don't necessarily think any other Sect 37 team would come away with a win aganst the Stars, but you never know. A lot of eyes will be on this one. the AP has Southmont at #9, but the Coaches put them a #13 . WeBo at #8/#6 in 3A polls. South Vermillion 5-1 at Fountain Central 2-4 The Wildcats had back to back 7 win seasons in 2019 and 2020 then a little falloff in 2021. They appear to be back to winning ways with Coach Barrett, and should be favored against the Mustangs tonight. SV has a won 4 in a row and had dropped the ppg allowed to under 10 (8.2). They had a resounding 38-0 win over previous 4-1 1A Riverton Parke last week, and their only loss has been to 3-3 Sullivan 24-14 in week to at Sportland Field. Fountain Central opened with 3 losses but put up big numbers on Covington and Attica. They battled 4-2 Seeger losing by 1 (28-27) Edgewood 1-5 and Sullivan 3-3 Coach Caton's Arrows are much better than the 3-3 record they sport. Their losses have come to 6-0 Linton, 6-0 Owen Valley and 4-2 Northview. They were in both the Linton and Owen Valley games to the end. It was 27-20 Linton at one point in the second half and Sullivan left points on the field as well as giving points away. It ended up 40-20 Miners. The Patriots Beat Northview 28-7, and the Knights beat the Arrow 28-7, but Sullivan mounted a big comeback against OV and just fell short losing 40-20. Edgewood started 1-0, but have lost their last 5, and the Mustangs could be on the receiving end of some pent up anger. The Arrows will be battle tested coming into the post season with games like Northview, Owen Valley, and again with 3A 4-2 Indian Creek in week 8. 3-3 Cascade at 4-2 Speedway The Cadets have gone back and forth but are back at .500 after winning an inter-37 matchup with 1-5 North Putnam 40-21 last week. They have a solid test hosting a rejuvenated Speedway team that is 4-2. Of course the 3 losses Cascade has endured have been lopsided losses to some of the top programs in the area- Scecina, Lutheran and Triton Central. It will interesting to see how the Cadets do in this matchup. Speedway fought Scecina decent in a 28-7 loss, the Saints beat Cascade 41-14. An interesting score was a loss to Beech Grove by Speedway, while Cascade beat the Hornets 28-13 in week 2. hmm. 1-5 Cloverdale at 3-3 Greencaste The Tigercubs stopped the 2 game skid by blasting winless Brown County 63-0. That same offense was blanked the week previous by SUllivan 38-0. Greencastle has wins over 2-4 West Vigo and 3-2 Attucks but have not fared well against solid opponents. Losses as well to Northview and 5-1 1A South Putnam. There really isn't much doubt that the Tigercubswill pick up win 4 tonight against the 1-5 Clovers. Cloverdale's long win was over winless Brown County. Unless Greencastle starts looking ahead at Owen Valley next Week 2-4 West Vigo at 1-5 North Putnam The Cougars continue to look for improvement after a loss to Cascage 40-21 and face a Viking team who's only wins have come against Brown Co. and Parke Heritage. North Put have lost to good programs in Southmont, SOuth Put and Covenant Christian. West Vigo lost to SOuth Putnam 40-8 last week while the Eagles beat NP 52-20.
  23. Linton, North Knox, Sullivan, Southmont, South Vermillion, Cascade, Greencastle & North Putnam. Well it just occurred to me that several of us in this somewhat new arrangement in Sectional 47 really don't know much about each other. So... creating this thread will hopefully get some discussion about the teams involved, and bring others into the conversation as well as follow each team through the remainder of the season. I know for me, there are teams I've not really any info on other than their records of the past and basic school info. Obviously for Linton we know Sullivan and North Knox particularly well having played these local rivals for years and years. We've played Cascade in a series from 1999-2003 winning 4 of 5, and met them in post season 1992 losing 45-13. We've not played South Vermillion, but have faced Clinton in '71 and '72 getting blanked twice! Greencastle is a foe Linton has never beaten, but we've not played then since a 1990 post season 55-0 loss. They were a regular schedule opponent from 1970 to 1975 where we lost all 6 meetings....add a loss in 1961 and Linton is 0-8 vs the Tigercubs... but those Linton teams weren't the Miners of the last 15 years. Linton faced Southmont in back to back years 1997 and 1998 splitting those games. North Put is a team Linton has never faced. So I am continuing this thread hoping it picks up speed as we get nearer to post season!
  24. Miners and Warriors to Tangle at the Roy on Homecoming Night. North Knox and Linton is another long term rivalry for Linton that dates back to the Bicknell Bulldogs days of battles on the gridiron. I only have records to 1930, but Linton seemed to get the best of that series from 1930 to 1958 winning 21 of 27 meetings with 2 of those ties. Oaktown, Bicknell, Freelandville and Vigo consolidated to North Knox in 1963. It became Miners vs Warriors in 1966 with newly christened North Knox winning the first 7 of 8, and 9 of the first 12. For whatever reason these two teams, separated by 30 miles of farmlands, did not meet in 1972 nor ’73, then again not in 1980-81-82. But they’ve met every year since 1983, sometimes twice a year which I have totaled up as 58 times with the Miners winning 42 of those, and including those 1930-58 Bicknell years Linton leads 63-20-2. Linton has dominated on the gridiron but North Knox won three in a row from 1990 to 1992. The Miners then won 32 of the next 36. The Warriors last win was a dominant one in 2020 at Roy Williams Field in Linton that shocked Miner Fans, 27-14. Linton had won 14 in a row coming into that game. That loss, and another in 2009 (15-7) are the only two losses Linton has had to the Warriors from 2000 onward. Linton got revenge on the 2009 loss by blasting NK 44-0 in the sectional rematch, but had to wait a year for the big loss in 2020. That would be last year’s 38-24 win at Warrior Field. The Miners and Warriors have met in post-season 7 times, when they’ve been in the class and sectional, with Linton winning all 7. Being that both schools are in Sectional 37, it could happen again. Josh Chambers in the head coach of North Knox, this being his 8th season at the helm. They went 8-3 last year, matching his 8-4 2019 season in wins but both seasons ended with losses in sectional play. Since the new post season system came into place in 1985 I don’t show the Warriors with a sectional title, but I know they had a rich tradition in the early 70’s. The best season in the 2000’s came with Shawn McDowell at the helm, in 2014 finishing 9-3 where they lost to Linton 41-0 in sectional championship. With Chambers NK has had winning campaigns in each of the last 3 years. Having to replace some big names in the North Knox program due to graduation certainly a big thing to do. Rhett Sheren rumbled for 262 yards in the 2020 win, and had 67 in 2021. Holtman Doades had 205 rushing against the Miners in the 2021 loss. They do return QB Mason Lyons, FB Kale Jones and both Tight Ends, or as they call them (Y & Z) in Brennan Messel and Devan Kent. Up front 3 year starters Dylan Bond (5’11 225) and Landyn Worstell (6;2 185) return to lead newcomers Logan Foster (5’10 190), Jacob Etmeier (5’9 250) both seniors, and sophomore Garret McGuire (5’11 170). I’ve also seen Blake Goodwin in there at 5’11 335. Junior RB Carter Lemberg is in Sheren’s familiar role, as the offense has not change in any way. Lamberg averages 6.8 per carry and has 693 yards on 102 carries, but is not the leading rusher of the Warriors; That person is WB Caleb Bottum, another junior. Bottum, a starter at safety last year as a sophomore, has an impressive 961 yards on a team high 104 carries with 9 rush TDs. QB Lyons adds 131 yards on 37 keeps and those three have all but 28 of NK’s 271 rush attempts, and all but 178 of their rushing team total of 1963. Passing has never been a Warrior commodity but they always seem to complete a couple big passes in past Miner meetings. Lyons has only put the ball up 37 times, hitting just 32.% of them (12) for 191 yards with 1 score and 3 interceptions thrown. I would also point out that in the 2020 loss to NK, then QB Reese Hammelman threw only 8 times, hitting 4 for just 23 yards. Everyone and their brother in law know what you will get when NK lines up across from you. It’s mano a mano, and if you can stop them running the ball successfully, you have a good chance at a win. NK has put up over 400 rush yards twice this year (489 vs Eastern Greene, 358 last week against Pike Central), and 306 against Sullivan in week 1. Messel had the most catches with 4 (61 yards), with 3 from Kent (49 yard and the lone air TD). As is always the case, opponents will load the box on the warriors and both squads will fight hand to hand helmet to helmet in a huge scrum play after play. Miner fans will hope that Lamberg, Lyons or Bottum will not pop thru that scrum into the secondary for big plays, but also that the defense isn’t lulled to sleep by anticipating the run only to see Warrior receivers 20 yards behind them wide open for huge plays. The Miner D came out with some changes last week in Elnora, and it looked to inspire the team, as well as supply depth at positions and put players were they seemed to be perfect fits. I know there will still be things to work on and mistakes made but it looked like a most cohesive group, and as it’s said completion breeds excellence. There is a lot of rotation at positions which not only gives guys a rest who play both sides, but allow time to watch and see what’s happening which can occasionally be a help. Russell Goodman at ILB even as a freshman, has been more and more involved and is 2nd in tackles with 42 with 4.5 TFL, 1.5 Sacks. Bradyn Cox, 3rd in tackles with 39 and 1.5 TFL, as well as Christian Shonk who moved to ILB from the nose tackle spot previous. Shonk has 4 TFL 1 sack and 9 Hurries. These three man in ILB spot, with Paul Oliver and Wrigley Franklin at OLB. Between Oliver and Franklin, both at 6’3” and leapers, they have 19 pressures on opposing QB’s, 13 TFL and 4 Sacks. In addition, Oliver, just a freshman, has 2 picks (1 returned for a TD).and a fumble recovery, plus 2 blocked punts. Up front Shonk still saw action at NT, but it was a rotation with Soph Hank Gennicks and Jr Ty Boyd. Boyd has 18 stops 3.5 for loss and .5 sacks. He also was in the mix at DE along with Senior Aiden Giles and Junior Ashton White. Giles had been at DE in 2021 but at ILB these first 5 games. He has 37.5 stops 3 for loss and half a sack. White has gone from mainly special team’s duty early in the year to time at ILB and more snaps at DE the last couple games. White makes plays, and it was evident immediately against North Daviess. He leads the team in total tackles with 43, with 5 TFL 1.5 Sacks and 5 Hurries. All of this means you can have an assortment of talent on the field at any time. Giles, Boyd, Gennicks, Shonk, White at any of the front 3 spots and feel good in any situation. The Defensive Backfield has seen good and back in 2022 giving up 16 pass plays of over 20+ yards but held a successful pass heavy 4-2 North Daviess squad with 1000-yard passer to just 6 of 15 for a mere 53 yards last week. Miner Coaching staff made a couple changes with Hunter Johns moving to CB from Free Safety. He has started at OLB in 2021, and the move put his speed and reaction time to the fore-front. In non-passing plays he is an asset to containing the outside run pushing it to the inside, not to mention he is a great tackler as well. Braden Walters moved to Free Safety where I feel his 6’5” height plays a bigger role. He’s already provided some big hits to break up would-be receptions. Soph Jesse Voigtschild was at the other corner, with mainstay Hunter Gennicks at Strong Safety. Gennicks speed makes it difficult for anyone to outrun him on a break-away, and his closing speed in a huge plus on any busted plays. Gennicks is always solid on run support with 38 tackles, 23 of those solo, 2 TFL and 2 picks. Both picks would have been TDs but one was called back via a questionable flag. You also have 6’5 Logan Webb with a lot of experience at CB, and add 6’1” sophomore Hayden Feltner in that mix. Feltner is another special teams’ mogul with 20 tackles to his credit. The Miner offense has been a juggernaut in 2022. Averaging 440.8 of total offense per game. Remember that three games have had running clocks the entire second halves which means the bulk of those yards came in Quarters 1 and 2. The most damage has come in the 2nd quarter with 135 of their total 304 being scored then. The Miners have found themselves up at the half by scores of 50-0, 56-7, 34-13 and 36-0. Only against Boonville have the Miners been behind at any time. They have shown the ability to face adversity with important scoring drives at big moments against Monrovia, Sullivan and many times against Boonville. The ability to churn out long time consuming drives as well as big play soul breakers, as evidenced by 38 plays of over 20+ yards. Linton has also been successful in scoring 62.5% of their possessions (40 of 64), which is you look at varsity time it jumps up to 69.6% (39 of 56). Linton has rushed for 1,853 yards with 30 rush TDs, averaging 308.8 per game. Credit must be given to Center Nathan Watson, Guards Aiden Giles and Wrigley Franklin, and Tackles Jacob Breedlove and sand Hank Gennicks. They have been consistent from week one. They love to compare Pancake Block tallies, but honestly a good block that springs a back for a big play or crucial first down and merely be a shove to be as effective. But for them I’ll say Franklin leads with by my tally 22, Gennicks and Giles with 15 each. Hunter Gennicks leads in touches (66) yards (788) and Tds (13) with an amazing 11.9 per carry average. His partner in “the Firm” in the backfield is fellow senior Hunter Johns, who has 510 yards on 53 totes, 10 TDs and himself a 9.6 average doing the in between the tackles work. Once more I bring out the fact these guys have essentially not played in at least 5 if not 6 quarters of games well at hand. Voigtschild has broken a few long runs and adds 204 yards on 27 carries, Walters as well with 139 on 22 carries. Capable back-ups are there with sophomore Eli Scott who started week 1, Russell Goodman, Ashton White, Bradyn Cox, Cody Pigg, and Tyson Walker all having their moments. A big plus to 2022 has been the array of receivers with size to this year’s edition. Logan Webb came out to play football his junior year, and by week 3 he was very involved in the pass game. At 6’4 he has proven to be Gennicks most targeted at 33 passes, and has made good on 18 of those for 195 yards and 2 TDs. But the addition of two newcomers has bolstered the passing game to new heights. The Air attack now accounts for 132.0 yards per game, with Gennicks on target 63% of his passes (57-90) for 785 yards with 10 TDs and just 1 interception thrown. Hunter has had 1,000 yard passing seasons in both his shop and junior years, not to mention 916 rushing as a sophomore and 1,195 last years. He is well within reason to eclipse both those again this year. The addition of 6’5 junior Braden Walters, who like Webb, came out his junior year and as stand-out for the Miner Basketball program. His 1st game was week 2, and he has had immediate impact with 18 catches for 286 yards and 4 scores. Freshman Paul Oliver at 6’3” had 11 catches, 3 of those scores with 169 yards. Voigtschild and Johns have 7 catches between them and 12 yards and a score. It’s been awhile since the Miners have had this many viable receivers each with the ability to make the big play. The Warrior defense will have their hands full, but it won’t be anything they haven’t seen and faced what Linton does. They faced the same Boonville Pioneer offense Linton did and held them to 7 points in regulation before losing in OT 13-7. Boonville put 40 on Linton. While NK held Boonville’s QB Conner to a 1 of 11 passing night producing 23 yards and a pick, the same QB out 218 yards, 3 touchdowns on 12 of 21 passing. So it’s to be seen how the Warriors fare. Sullivan ran for 161 yards and 4 scores while passing for 136 and another score in week 1’s Arrow win 31-12. By comparison Sullivan has 121 rushing and 224 passing against Linton in week 4. NK is led in tackles by ILB junior Kaleb Archer with 69, 7 TFL and a Sack. OLB Brennan Messel, a sophomore, is next up with 39, with the other ILB senior Logan Foster at 37 with 2 TFL. Junior Caleb Bottum also has notched 37 stops from Free Safety. OLB Devan Kent had 3.5 TFL from OLB with 31 stops, with Corner back Lane Adams, another soph adding 30. Nose Tackle Jean Pierre gets in the action with 25 tackles and 1 each of a TFL, Sack and Interception. NK only returns 4 starters from the Linton game of 2021- Kale Jones at OLB, Dylan Bond at DT, Mason Lyons at CB and Bottum at Free Safety. NK comes to the Roy with an eye on upsetting the Miners on Homecoming. As always the Miners have the target on their back, but even more so with a #1 ranking in 2A in the State. The Warriors coming in after back to back wins over 1A North Central 35-0 and 3A Pike Central 35-14. Their other win came in week two 45-14 over 1A Eastern Greene. Those wins come against a collective opponent Won-Loss of 2-15. Their losses come to Sullivan (3-3) 31-17, 1A 6-0 Tecumseh 35-14 and to 4-2 A Boonville 13-7 in OT. You can bet Coach Brian Oliver in year 10 at the helm of his Alma Mater will have his Miners primed with enthusiasm and intensity. Coach Oliver is 45-17 since taking over for Steve Weber staring in 2013 and led Linton to the promised land of Lucas Oil in back to back years (2015 and 2016) with the trophy coming to Linton in 2016. The bad taste of losing to North Knox in the Warriors last trip to Roy Williams (2020) still fresh in the mind, a game that saw Linton out done in physicality and embarrassed on their home turf. Many of these current seniors were sophomores: Hunter Gennicks, Aiden Giles, Wrigley Franklin, Hunter Johns certainly remember that game. Once more I can’t impress on Linton fans how important it is to fill the Roy with full voice and support for your Miners. They have put on quite the show in 2022, as well as in 2021 and should be taking the field to a packed house of Miner Red and Blue. Again we have been blessed by weather as it looks to be a perfect fall night for football. You can bet North Knox will show up in full voice. Beating Linton is always something huge locally, but beating Linton at Linton, on Linton’s Homecoming, when Linton is ranked #1 in the State would be talked about forever. The crowd support has been stellar thus far, and was very impressive in the last home game with Sullivan. This was noted by Coach Oliver and by the players themselves as helping them in many ways. You can’t know how it feels unless you have been on that field and experienced it. Let’s keep that happening for these guys. You can carry our radio broadcast online on your phone while at the game by going to www.wqtyradio.com. Listen as the game plays out to hear all the pertinent info, and maybe a little more than you necessarily want to hear! All the stats as they happen, and experienced play by play from Kevin Rader, and all the color you’d even need from my 23 years of coverage as well as my great memories of playing Linton Miner Football.
