I've admired Coach Radke for years but never been on staff with him.  Every story I've gathered from opposing coaches, every old article from Northwest Indiana Times or Region Sports Network, paints a picture of a extremely passionate individual that pushes his staff and players to the limits.  You could easily suspect the man of being some sort of tyrant.  Then you talk to players who have played for him or coaches that have coached under him, and they are all FERVENT Coach Radke supporters.   It will be interesting to see how fast he can turn Portage around, which of his longtime staff members of his staff will go with him,  and what "Vibe" he chooses to exude at this stop.  Is the old dog learning new tricks late in his career?    Does anyone know if he will have some sort of position in the school during the day?

Does he currently teach at new prairie or have an administrative role?

And what do we tell Johnny Football in 5 years when he is $100K in debt and getting ready to start his fabulous career as a Gym Teacher for $35000 in Podunk, Indiana?

Oh wait, President Warren will likely forgive that debt as part of her income redistribution initiative

Congrats! You saved $250k by not playing at Wabash and getting an Education Degree that you will use to get a job as a Gym Teacher for $35k in Podunk, Indiana.

Come on folks, we're PE teachers who teach in the gym, not about the gym!! haha

  3. Was at the game. What happened at the end of the first half? Thought IU had 1 timeout left and instead of using it they let the clock run down to 3 seconds then kicked the field goal. Why didn’t they use the timeout earlier, try a play to the end zone then kick the field goal? I didn’t understand that and not having the hands team out there for the onsides kick. Great game to be at, except the ending if you’re an IU fan, and I thought the stadium was awesome.

Why would Keith Kinder leave a 2 time sectional championship team/school with great facilities, awesome support, large fan-base, full time strength & conditioning coach on staff, etc. to go back to Jimtown which has numbers dwindling and community apathy for the sport?  Baugo has CHANGED since the glory days and the one's there KNOW it, but the one's still living in the past can't accept it.

Easy there champ, I just said if I was Jimtown I would see if he was interested. I agree on your points but maybe KK wants to see his old school return to glory.

Downtown Mishawaka, Prized Pig is a new BBQ joint...pick up your tailgating meat there and head back to Roc's (also right downtown) after the game.

Southside of SB, where you will get off of 31 has BW's, WIngs Etc, Hacienda, and the usual Applebees/McD's/etc.

Was in Mishawaka over the weekend and Roc's has closed down. Not sure when and why but just saw this on Saturday. Scoobies, in downtown Mishawaka, has some awesome subs and burgers but closes early, like 5pm.

I was the quarterback on that team...and YES, we RARELY threw the ball, but it was our ONLY option as our running game was stuffed in the 1st half.  Besides winning such a thrilling game, the second best memory of that game was after.  The SB Tribune and The NW Indiana Times asked Coach Smith and myself to stick around in our "makeshift locker room" by the football field (it was a garage).  We were both interviewed about the game and walked out of the garage expecting the school bus to be there so we could hitch a ride back to Valpo High School to change/warm up for our trip home.  When we walked out we realized the bus had already went back to the school and Coach Smith and I RAN back to the high school because it was so cold.  It was the ONLY time I ever saw Coach Smith run.

Side Note:  Coach Smith was and is one of the all-time greatest men to ever coach in Indiana!

Shout out to #3, who had 3 straight sectional starts vs Valpo in the early 90s (and was 3-0 I might add!)

They came to LC in '90. In '91 they beat Portage in 2nd Round 13-12 in Mishawaka, won Sectional's at Valpo in the game mentioned above, beat Crown Point in Regionals, and lost to Penn in Semi-State. I was at the Portage game as a 7th grader. Man, that was brutal weather that week as well. It's pretty crazy though, at least to me, that Penn and Mishawaka didn't meet each other until SEMI-STATE. It's not like 5A was just a 32 team class back then.

This was back when Mishawaka had some great sectional games vs valpo, like 3 straight years including a game I saw as a 7th grader with Mishawaka recovering an onside kick and kicking a field goal as time expired to win. Penn was east and Mishawaka went west when it came tourney time.

There most certainly was, and I was the Referee on that game. Valpo had a big lead and appeared in control. Mishawaka mounted a furious comeback on the strength, of all things, of their passing game. Al Smith was the coach at Mishawaka, and his attitude toward the forward pass was somewhere to the right of Woody Hayes. 😅 Outside the hashes the field was OK, but between the hashes was solid ice. The big play that won it for the Cavemen was a long punt return TD where the returner literally skated right down the middle of the field.

Perhaps @maroonman can confirm my recollection, if he’s lurking out there somewhere.

I believe it was current Mishawaka councilman Matt Mammolenti who returned that punt! Must have been 90 or 91

Contrary to what some people think , both Schools want the Penn - Mishawaka series to continue . I've said it all along , it's a scheduling issue for the next few years as both schools have contracts for week 1-2 .

Grew up watching and played in the backyard brawl. Back in the mid 80s and 90s in the Geesman era it seemed like we would never beat Penn, coming within 20 seemed like a victory and we only had a few moral victories that I can remember. That trend continued throughout the 2000s and then Curtis changed the entire culture and brought a system that enabled Mishawaka to really hang and play with anyone on the schedule. It’s a shame, perhaps last time since the Michigan City merger the possibility of these teams not playing each other but that got figured out before they missed a game. I can’t imagine being a player at either school and not having the opportunity of playing at either Steele Stadium or Freed Field on a fall Friday night. Think the cavemen take care of business in this “final” meeting.
