Joe Goodman was one of the most organized well prepared men I’ve ever met. That being said couldn’t coach by the seat of his pants to save his life. Field was a quagmire, Greenwood adjust, Seymour didn’t. That Seymour team was loaded.

Joe had some really good teams up there though.

That really blows. Hate to hear that even if it benefits East’s chances of beating them. Hopefully he can heal up quickly and be ready to go at full-speed next year.

Also, it’s nice to see a Seymour fan on here. I wish we could get fans from the other schools on here. New Albany, Jeffersonville, and Jennings County are severely lacking.

I tell you what. This conference is going to be ridiculously competitive. There isn’t a clear favorite. I’m not sure you can really sort them 1-5 because it’s going to be messy. New Albany and Jeffersonville you would think are down. But I do my homework. NA returns 8 starters on defense. They also added two of Louisville Males best players to that defense. Their OL is big. Their QB and RB are first year players but they are athletic. Jeffersonville has a 230 lb RB with 4.7 speed and an OL with its smallest player being 260 lbs. Floyd Central is a lot bigger then they usually are, especially on their DL. Their QB has a cannon and their RB is a 210 lb animal. East has a lot back. Big strong kids. Probably the best LB in the conference. BNL is going to be better because they had some promising games last season and brought a lot back. Seymour brought a lot back. Really good young QB and a SO that I believe was an All State WR as a Freshman? This conference will be nuts. Some of the results will be suprising IMO.

Updated my list after the scrimmages and info I have heard about East.

    1. Columbus East (was told they will be solid this year, and looked good in the scrimmage… Chase Harrison is an absolute monster)

    2. Seymour (They return a lot like East, from a solid campaign last year)

    3. Floyd (always has the athletes, injury bug seems to bite them some each year)

Yeah that’s a big key for sure. We need to stay healthy. As is the case for most HHC teams because good depth is hard to come by.

  4. With that being said. I’ll give my HHC predictions.

    1. Seymour. I’d like to be a Homer and pick FC. But Seymour was the first team to knock off East finally. And I think they have a good team on paper and a good QB in Brett Perry. Their schedule sets up good for them. So I’ll go with Seymour.

    2. Floyd Central. The biggest non-homer reason I’m picking them, is because East comes to Floyd Central and I think this is the year that FC will break that losing streak.

    3. Columbus East. I’m picking them here based off reputation. I think that East will have good teams and win HHC Championships, but everyone seems to be a on a more level playing field with them Post-Gaddis. Replacing Parks, McDonald, and Villarreal will be big for them.

    4. BNL. I like their team this season. Their QB was very good last season and he’s a Jr now and I think they could easily upset one of these top 3.

    5. New Albany. They’re rebuilding but they’ve brought in a couple of good transfers that will help. Defensively they’ll be pretty decent but offensively they are young and have some questions to answer.

    6. Jeffersonville. Coach Parker has brought discipline there but they are replacing some good players off a team that wasn’t very good. A lot of questions about them and the answers haven’t come yet.

    7. Jennings County. Based on reputation. I don’t know what they have coming back, but they are the perennial basement team. Nice community up there so I’m hoping they can make some moves to get competitive again.

  5. I attended the Floyd Central vs Charlestown scrimmage. I had a feeling it would be a competitive scrimmage and I was right. Both teams looked solid. Charlestown is a contender to win the MSC and their sectional. My biggest takeaway was how much bigger and stronger Floyd Central looked. Their RB Mitch Bernardi is a load to try to tackle. Their OL looks like a typical HHC OL. A couple of pretty big guys and some regular size guys. But they played well. Robertson looks a lot bigger and a lot more confident for them. He looked more accurate, especially with his deep ball. Their WRs are really good. A lot of experience there. Jordan Fonda should be a standout in the HHC this season. They had a SO who is also the backup QB starting at WR. Very athletic kid at 6”4.

Defensively they played fairly well, but there is some work to be done, especially in pass coverage. Biggest takeaway was the size of their DTs. One guy is about 6”4 315. And the Other guy is about 6”1 260. And they have another guy that was sick, that is 6”4 295. So they have some girth in the middle and they’re hard to run against. Their LB core of Hausz, Bernardi, and Lockhart is very good. All 3 guys are over 200 lbs and can run. Their secondary is basically made up from their WR core. There are some athletes back there but they’ll need to continue to work to improve.

I don’t seem them doing very well against the typical Louisville Male who basically destroys everyone they play, or Louisville Manual who is typically pretty good. But in the HHC where everyone is basically a matchup opponent, they’ll have their chances to win several games.

    HHC Scrimmage Schedule:

    Mitchell at BNL

    Martinsville at Columbus East

    Floyd Central at Charlestown

    Jeffersonville at Whiteland

    Jennings County at Brownstown Central

    New Albany at Scottsburg

    Silver Creek at Seymour

I’ll be at Floyd Central/Charlestown. Should be fun. The two teams are similar.

I know about East, Seymour, and Floyd Central. I’m just curious with how New Albany compares to Jeffersonville and BNL.

I see BNL as improved. I like their QB a lot. They’ll be competitive. Jeffersonville is going through another coaching change and lost some good Srs from a team with a losing record.

I’m curious to see how far New Albany falls. Not sure what Jeffersonville and BNL have but it seems possible that New Albany could go from 1st to 6th.

Their talent isn’t good. They are going to be putting a lot of guys out there with very little experience. While East, Floyd, and Seymour bring back at least half of their starters or more.

My take for this year will be :

    1. Columbus East

    2. Seymour

    3. Floyd

Would not surprise me if Seymour won the conference tho, they return a lot from a good team last year.

That’s probably my top 3 as well. Seymour and East both play down here at Floyd Central so those should be interesting games.

  10. We’re getting very close to getting things kicked off. Football is right around the corner. I figured I would go ahead and give a Floyd Central preview since I know a little bit about them and probably a HHC preview in a few weeks when I know more about the other teams. I would love for you guys to talk about the other teams. The more I know, the more I appreciate it.

Floyd Central-Coach James Bragg is going into his 5th season. Overall, he has a winning record. Coach Bragg is probably disappointed with how last season went. Floyd Central finished 4-6.

Offensively, their team should be built around Jr QB Tristan Robertson. He showed some flashes last season, including some impressive throws up in Columbus. But he was mistake prone too. He threw some ill-advised passes that were picked off. He has good size and above average arm strength. If he can cut down on mistakes, he could be an All Conference QB this season. Their RB should be Jr Mitchell Bernardi. A transfer from Florida in 2021, he started most games for FC at RB last season. He was very good. He’s around 6 foot and about 200 lbs. 4.7 type of runner. Should be able to run for 1000+ this season. Jake Hausz is another guy who played LB last season but didn’t run the ball because he had a foot issue. Another strong kid with decent speed. They have a few other younger guys with speed that we could see. WR should be their best position group. They’re led by Sr Eli Branham. He’s probably Floyd Centrals best player IMO. At 5”8 160 lbs, he’s Floyds quickest and most dynamic player. He played RB, Slot WR, CB last season. A likely All Conference performer this season. Sr Jordan Fonda is another guy who should start at WR along with Sr Max Grainger and Sr Cody Bibelhauser. A lot of experience there and some guys that have decent speed. Their OL suffered some losses. I think they are replacing 4 guys there. They will be anchored by Jr Justin Brown. He’s a 6”0 300 Lb OG with possible All Conference potential. I’m not sure who the other guys will be on the OL but there is definitely some work to do at that position.

Defensively. Floyd suffered some losses up front. Matt Bernardi, older brother of Mitchell, graduated along with Gavin Harvey and Nate Ripley. There will be some inexperience playing at that position. Their back 7 is in a lot better shape. The guys I mentioned on Offense, Branham, Fonda, Grainger, Hausz, Bernardi, Biblehauser, all of those guys will probably go both ways and sub out at times. Coach Bragg will get his best athletes on defense. I think Branham could be the best CB in the Conference. Such an impressive athlete.

Special Teams. Floyd is typically solid in the kicking game. Max Grainger plays 3 ways. Because he’s also the K/P. And he was very solid last season and I expect him to be even better this season. I’m not sure who will return the ball for Floyd but I would definitely expect Branham to be back there somewhere.

Synopsis. I do expect Floyd Central to be a better team this season. They should be able to pass the ball very well this season. People have praised their execution in 7on7 play albeit, with no pass rushers. I think this is a good opportunity for coach Bragg to right the ship.

I don't really follow the HHC much, just glace time to time because GS picked up New Albany last year and we're hosting them again this year.  Curious to know your thoughts on them taking a step back in 2022.  Loss of a lot of key seniors?  I honestly don't know what their starting roster was made up of in 2021. I do know there were several electric players that could do damage in the open field.

I’m actually supportive of New Albany, even though they rival Floyd Central, because I’m a lifetime Floyd County resident. But they spent many years, as BoilerFan87 alluded to, building that team. I’ve heard that it started in the youth leagues. That was probably the most stacked New Albany team that I’ve ever personally seen. I don’t think they have anything like that coming up the next few years. Quite honestly, I think this entire area of the State is going to be down for a while.

This conference has some of the best coaching in the state.  Reed May at Brownstown is a HOF Coach with one of the highest winning percentages in state history.  Dave Papenhaus at SC, Kyle Mullin at Scottsburg and Blair Thompson at Salem are all young , rising coaches who could be leading bigger programs in the future.  Charlestown's Jason Hawkins and Mark Williamson at North Harrison are veteran coaches who know how to win.  Solid group puts this league on a good footing.

I know a few bigger schools that could use guys like them.

Does anybody want to take a shot at how the standings will look this year? I feel like this is the most wide open the conference has been in a very long time. I personally don’t know what everybody has coming back this year. Columbus East will have much more experience and I believe I heard Floyd Central and BNL will be as well. New Albany will take a step back. I’m not sure about the situations at Jeffersonville and Seymour. As for Jennings County, I don’t think it matters what they have coming back. Yet another coaching change means yet another system to learn.

I’ll answer for Floyd Central. We have plenty of talent. But will we be a good team this year? We’ll see.

  14. I’d take the Jennings County job. It’s a hell of a challenge, but I’d give it a shot. Trying to figure the winning formula there would be the biggest challenge. It’s like trying to turn around Indiana University Football. And at JC, the talent level isn’t on par with most of the conference. I think the right coach needs to learn how to develop their size. Better fundamental blocking. They’re going to win with strength and not speed. You can develop guys to become stronger. Speed is a hard thing to teach unfortunately. More or less impossible.

Aside from a couple of parochial powers, running the CYO Toss, I can’t remember the last time I saw Power I, the 80’s maybe?

I’m not sure of the MS program of late, but thru the years, JC HC changes didn’t necessarily mean youth/MS coaching changes. I’m not sure the HC has any control over the youth program. I think there are some good guys there doing the best they can, I think they could use some coaching and some new blood. Year in and year out over the last probably 8-10 years, hands down the best youth teams in the conference are Madison. They are well coached, disciplined, and the play hard. And they don’t do anything the HS does, they run single wing, and they run it well. It makes zero sense to me.

I should elaborate. I don’t mean the 3 RB, 2 TE style of football. I just meant, an offense that is geared more towards running the ball between the tackles. Maybe the Wing-T, although that offense has many variations of running plays. I just want to see them do well. I am supportive of every team in the HHC getting better. I like watching games where if you win the game, it’s a good win.

Have you been talking to the “experts” in Seymour?

I’m not sure what you mean?

15 hours ago, Old Man High Pants said:

They did that when Coach Beuning was there and still didn't have much success. He has gone on to win a state championship and had multiple deep playoff runs since then so it wasn't a lack of head coaching while he was there, maybe a lack of assistant help.

Jennings County is definitely different since he was there. They have made some major upgrades. What they really need is somebody who is going to be there for the long haul. I don't think they need to hire a guy who is wanting to have a few successful seasons and turn it into another job.

This is true, but he wasn’t there long enough. You don’t turn around a program like that in 2-3 years. It starts in the youth system.

  17. I’ve always thought Brian Glesing would be a great guy for a program like JC. Unfortunately he’s moved around a lot since leaving FC. But they need a good fundamentals, ground and pound, type of football coach. Spreading the offense out and trying to create a passing attack will never work at JC. They need to take advantage of the size they have there. I remember talking to a guy who ran a lineman camp years ago, that said the Floyd Central OL were some of the most well coached lineman he’d ever seen. But they were undersized. Unfortunately our kids eat Salads and Sushi. Lol. JC needs to find a coach that can teach those JC lineman how to fundamentally run block. They need to run the Power-I.
