If you look back at some of the games, a good handful came down to final drives. There was the heartbreaker at Penn, I think 4th and goal BD punched it in for the win. My Senior year at BD we were down by 21 or so, came back and forced overtime.

IDK if you still do it, but you guys would line up shoulder to shoulder along your sideline for the coin toss. I think it was supposed to intimidate us, but the guys always seemed ready for the challenge.

11 of the games played were 1 score games.  15 games were played from 1996 - 2010. Penn only won 4 of those games. but each game was memorable in some way.

Then having the teams sit down and eat dinner after the game together was really special.

It has been since 2010 since Penn has played BD yearly. Idc if we got walked, won or lost close. BD was always the game on our schedule. Also, the respect between the two programs, sharing meals after the game was an awesome sign of respect.

I loved that rivalry....well it was lopsided but still a Rivalry to us.

    It was so unique.

I think Penn needs to have Mishawaka on their schedule. It is good for our area. What threw me into a frenzy, is the fact that we (the school) are so worried about hurting conference schools feelings that we are sacrificing our competitiveness in the 6A tourney for a conference championship.

I would rather have Mishawaka on the schedule and send the JV to play most of our conference schedule.  That gives us 3 or 4 games we could play Carmel and other 6A schools.

But, we care more about feelings than we do about winning.

I remember running into Coach Geesman before BD and Penn played for the last time in the regular season at Lucas Oil. He was talking about how he told the NIC/ADs they needed to protect rivalries so that games like the Mishawaka game never fell off.

There are a few yearbooks on the classmates website.

You can also use inspire.in.gov and click on the newspapers link and search for the Indianapolis Star, it has all the past editions except for the last 30 days or so.

I may be able to help you with what you are missing if you want to dm here.

I'm using the Digital Indy site which has most of the Yearbooks in question. I appreciate the Star link idea. The problem is that the yearbooks would put regular season results in and then say Sectionals 2nd. John Harrell also has all the IHSAA yearbook data inputted.

I wish her the best. It's a lot of fun trying to search down little tidbits of history to give to future generations. I'm currently trying to figure out game-by-game results for Ben Davis girls basketball, and it's a challenge. Once it's done though, it's there for everyone. My project is easy compared to what she's trying to do.

Penn Drops Carmel in favor of Mishawaka.....

We will be an undefeated paper giant going into sectionals for the foreseeable future.

    GAH.

Penn/Mishawaka is like BD/Warren, Avon/Brownsburg, Bloomington North/Bloomington South, HSE/Fishers right? I mean, not the same district but huge rivals. I can see this making difference in gate receipts, but I think Penn needs to play someone down in this area.

I was watch the cg vs greenwood basketball game and they mentioned that was like the  192 meeting between the the two schools.  I know that is basketball and it is have played a lot longer, but it got to wondering what is some of the longest rivalries still playing today in football.  I know BD and WC have going on for a long time, just not sure how long

Ben Davis/Warren dates to 1937, and there have been 99 meetings, including the playoffs, in that time. Warren leads the series, 58-38-3.

Ben Davis's next longest continuous rivalry is with North Central. They've met 75 times since 1956. The Giants have the series lead, 43-32.

After that, it's Carmel. The Giants played them twice in the 50's and they've played every year since 1981. The series is tied at 25 a piece.

The other longtime series (may not be continuous or on hiatus) include:

Ben Davis/Decatur Central: 62 meetings, Ben Davis leads 45-16-1 (Series on Hiatus)

Ben Davis/Southport: 58 meetings, Tied 28-28-2 (Only play in the tourney now)

Ben Davis/Pike: 50 meetings, Ben Davis leads 38-12 (Played 1945-1954, 1961-1963, 1970-1979, sporadically in the tournament, then 2012-present)

Unless they would split into two high schools. As for Carmel, you can bet you're life savings that will never happen. A guy I knew who used to be one of the higher ups in that system told me they will keep adding freshmen/senior centers and whatever to avoid a second high school. The main reason - SPORTS! Imagine if the HSE District had not done this. Both HSE and Fishers High Schools have over 3,000 enrollment. So a 6-7,000 enrollment high school.

There's no land for a new high school in Wayne Township, and there's not really any talk of splitting up BD. There hasn't been any talk of that for 30 years.

  9. I think the Giants should still be pretty good. Isaiah Rogers has one of the best arms I've ever seen in a high school quarterback. I mean, his ball means business coming off his arm. It's going to be incredibly hard to replace the leadership the Giants will be losing on the field and off (Kevin Vanderbush retiring), but I think Coach Mann and his staff will "go back into the lab" and figure something out. I was really impressed with Russ this year. While he landed on second or third base with this roster, he certainly never acted like it the way he coached them up.

As far as the rest of 6A goes, I would expect Warren will have a lights out, championship defense. They were very young this year. If they can figure something out on offense, they could certainly have enough to hang a plaque. Center Grove's not going anywhere. You'll probably see those HCC teams continuing to show what they're made of...especially Westfield who, anecdotally, I heard was a year ahead of where they thought they'd be.

I'm interested to see what happens with Sectional realignment this year. With Snider joining 6A, that likely pushes Fishers and HSE south again since the IHSAA does not want to separate schools in the same district. Of course, that depends on what squads end up at the bottom of 6A and drop to 5A with Cathedral and Snider up.

Can someone please tell CalPreps that Ben Davis is the full name of the school? I've tried. MaxPreps finally got it right a few years ago.

Ben Davis is named after a place which was named after a person. It's like Jim Thorpe, PA, for example. You wouldn't put Central (Warren) or Grove (Center) on there. OK, back to my Thanksgiving nap.

I know from a broadcast perspective what you mean. I can't imagine those involved with 5A (TV or Radio) will be thrilled if Decatur Central wears their white uniforms with gold numbers! Nothing against DC as the uni's look great, but very hard to read numbers especially in the LOS press box!

I've heard rumors that BD will be in their purple on Saturday.
