  1. Halftime-Ben Davis 17, Cathedral 7

Huge score by the Giants before the half. Tommy Gotkowski tossed it up for grabs in the end zone from 13 yards out, and Nate Williams caught it in traffic. Giants also got a break on a 4th down conversion during the drive. Irish ball to start the second half.

They could host the Semi-State with a W

BD barely beat LC and Warren.

Warren/Ben Davis is always going to be close. That's a rivalry game. BD came off the loss to IMG that week and didn't get fully reengaged per Coach Mann. He said they really learned from that situation.

I can't fully explain why the Giants had trouble with the Bears. It was their senior night, and LC seems to know how to play the Giants (up 28-0 in 2022 before losing 29-28). The Giants did not have Nylan Brown that night and were missing a couple of receivers. Gotkowski got hurt as well during the game, but the Giants, for some reason, could get into the red zone but couldn't make 3's turn into 7's. It was a weird game.

Like they have most of the year, BD performed well in the clutch though and LC scored a TD right before the end of the game to make it 26-23. Outside of the IMG game (where they also had opportunities against a really good opponent), that was probably the worst performance of the year.

BD dropping 62 on LN was definitely eyebrow raising. The Wildcats threw 5 Int's and had a fumble in that game something that was detrimental to them, you can't give BD that many possessions or a short field.

That was a very surprising game. I think everything snowballed on LN quickly. Never expected the Giants to be up 55-14 at the half.

Didn't someone recently write a three-quarter guide on how to stop Ben Davis' offense.

Ben Davis stopped themselves a lot in that game with drops. Finally, Gotkowski and MZ IV just put the game on their backs and legs and took over where they could. Nylan Brown, Drew Evans and the D stopped Sherrell a lot except for the big plays.

The Giants have an excellent QB as well.

Offensively Ben Davis is averaging 42 PPG Cathedral 36.36

Defensively Ben Davis is allowing 16.82 PPG and Cathedral 17.27

They do. Tommy doesn't get enough credit for how good he's been this year. Wherever this ends for the Giants this year, this week, next week or on November 26th, it's going to be tough to replace this senior group and these guys.

Think of Warren Central and Ben Davis similar to Carroll and Homestead. Homestead and Carroll are not part of Fort Wayne Public Schools just like Warren Central, Pike, North Central, Lawrence North, Lawrence Central, Southport, Perry Meridian, Speedway, Franklin Central, and Ben Davis are not part of IPS. The Private/Parochial schools have been around (earliest 1918 Cathedral) even during the hayday when Arsenal Tech, Howe, Washington, etc. were doing very good.

The decline of IPS was a direct result of busing and it has never recovered. From 1973 to 1998 IPS student enrollment plummeted by 64,000 students. It had zero to do with recruiting.

Some PP Catholic schools are tied to specific parishes. Ritter, Roncalli, Chatard, Scecina for ex. are tied to parishes. Cathedral and Brebeuf Jesuit are not.

It coincided with the arrival of Mr. Dick Dullaghan. One of the finest men I have met in my lifetime. He treated the janitor the same as he did the Superintendent. Before he was hired at Ben Davis they had only had 10 winning seasons in 46 years.

    It's 11 by my count.

    1940, 1950, 1951, 1954, 1958, 1964, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979

In addition, they were .500 in 1947, 1949 and 1953.

So, all totaled up, the program had 11 winning and a total of 14 non-losing seasons between 1937 and 1983.

Ben Davis's State and National prominence was there long before Washington High School closed the first time in 1995. Their National Title came in 1991 Dick Dullaghan started coaching at BD in 1984 and that is when they really began to take off.

Busing though really was the start of the death nail to IPS schools.

I agree with much of this. Ben Davis had always been pretty good in basketball, but the football team largely struggled between 1937 and 1983.

Bob Wilbur did a fine job at BD in the 70's, but the big jump came from the hiring of Dick Dullaghan. Coach D arrived on campus with a program that had a record of 155-265-12. When he retired, BD was 368-307-12. I attribute the biggest jump in hiring Coach D and Coach Kevin Vanderbush.

Judge Dillon's deseg order bussed students from IPS into the townships, and that went into effect in 1981. Washington closed in 1995.

For a real primer, you might pick up Steve Witty's book "I Remember When The Game Had No Class" because he covers it from the basketball side.

Well now FHS will get a nice, fancy, professionally built press box with A/C, an elevator, and probably a mini-bar.  It will match their fancy-dancy LED field lights that they flash in blue and white whenever the Hot Dogs score.  Of course they don't get used much.......................

Those LED lights are far more efficient and less costly over time.
