Bad news for some: The state football tournament will not be cancelled. And let's just say, I trust my sources. Unless football players start dropping like flies all of a sudden (which will not happen). From what I know, majority of schools and counties have handled outbreaks fairly well. If teams have to forfeit, so be it, the healthy teams move on and props to them. While serious and unfortunate, the big bad virus that results in an extremely high survival chance does not mean we have to give up, give in and cancel life.

Let's wait and see what happens.  My allegiance is the with South Bend teams and Gary West.  Could fans be rooting for attrition.

It is nice to have the means to get tested so quickly...will never happen in other places.

I was watching the game tonight and I couldn't help but notice that every player I saw in the dugout was not wearing a mask nor social distancing, but the umpires all had masks on and 6/7 were able to social distance.  And all the coaches had masks on.  Wonder why this is?

They are tested quite often...bet they have to be cleared before every game.

Baseball survived this year...a glorious thing

    What is United football?

United flag football is an IHSAA sport that has players with and without disabilities as part of the team.

They play for a state championship just like any other IHSAA sport.

Indiana was the first state to offer Unified Flag Football.

Indiana also sponsors Unified Bocce, Bowling, and Track and Field

    Bremen runs wild over clay.

Elkhart will handle NP. Hopefully the Cougs get some positives out of this game as they head into a winnable sectional.

    Penn soundly beats Adams.

    Jimtown whips the wildcats

Marian comes out on top of St. Joe. Wouldn't be surprised if Marian is a little sloppy in this one.

    Glenn sneaks by Washington.

I don't know if it was the departure of Mishawaka, Covid, cancellation of the most important game, or just an "off" year but it didn't seam  that we had too many intriguing/good matchups this season. I think the schools did the best they could when the old NSC dissolved, but I just don't see this conference set up lasting too much longer (I'm talking all sports, not just football). Unfortunately Elkhart and Penn are  two elephants in the room. Do you court Warsaw and talk with some Fort Wayne schools? go independent? Duneland is too far and they don't "fit" the mold.

Wouldn't be my dream conference but if Elkhart and Penn left and South Bend consolidated into 2 or 3 high schools; a conference that looked like: New Prairie, Marian, St. Joe, Glenn, Bremen, Jimtown, South Bend "A", South Bend "B" would be a pretty nice conference from a competitive and size standpoint across all sports. won't happen but fun to talk about.

Last Monday, it was recommended to the South Bend school board to close 5 to 8 schools in the district.  So South Bend may be down a high school or two.  Hammond is about the same size and they reduced to 2 high schools.

I don't see any reason for Elkhart and Penn to leave.  Penn has had many opportunities and stayed put.  Elkhart is the last charter member of the NIC.

I think all sports are fairly competitive in the NIC, especially boys basketball.

I don't think the football will ever have parity.

One of the seniors that graduated in 2018 rode his bike 6 miles one way to practice every single day during the summer his jr and sr year, never missed a single summer practice or weight lifting session while working his jr and senior year. He bought his own vehicle...paid for his cell phone, insurance and gas...had an absolutely terrible home life, his father is currently in michigan city, living there not because he wants to...if you catch my drift. He was a manager in basketball and played JV baseball too. He rarely played.  He's a character kid... The sports teams have him a sense of family that he was missing.

The boy that joined the military played JV as a jr and a sr. He started the two sectional games winamac had that year due to injury. Him and the kid above coming out their senior year ALLOWED winamac to have a junior varsity team.. so honestly their selflessness allowed underclassmen to get reps. He also got accepted into purdue, ball state and so on. He chose to join the military cause that was his dream due to having other relatives In it + the free college.

The 3rd kid never missed a single morning basketball work out or practice in his 4 years, is an outstanding young man. He came out his senior year to help with numbers and helped winamac have atleast 2 jv games last year.

This website is to promote high school kids. You routinely do not .. your dumb contraction posts, you insulting kids by saying they have no pride. You are a grown a** man. Do you not have any pride in yourself? Cause if you did. You wouldn't spend 75 percent of the time insulting kids on here.

Where do you think this is unique...there are plenty of examples of kids like this all over the state.

Maybe the circumstances are a little different, but the stories are the same.

The boys are to be commended...but they aren't unique.

  6. How can so many people be so wrong on an opinion to a simple question.

I know how a senior can still play football and learn some serious life lessons.

The is Unified Flag Football in Indiana.  It give students who would never play high school sports a chance to say I played for Local Town High School.

You learn about people different from you, how to work together to make a team.  Who knows, they may become your best friends.

Unified Sports is going to grow and grow.  Maybe kids need to look at how they can make a contribution to their school.

  7. I believe that there are some on this site that overestimate their importance.

Arguing to argue kind of ruins the flow of a thread...there were a lot of valid points until personal attacks come into play

I try to respect all in here and accept their point of view...Many here do not.

Maybe the administrators need to set up permanent conference threads so people can talk about what they want.

Maybe some want to have debate over general football topics.

    Jeeze

So let me ask you this. Do you see organized sports as an arbitrary sideshow devoid of positive benefits in the development of our youth? I would definitely argue the contrary. Of course that depends on quality of coaches as well. Sports, and my coaches, definitely instilled in me qualities like courage, humility, work ethic, team work, sacrifice, how to respond to pressure or adversity, how to compete, determination, perseverance, mental toughness, physical toughness, and sportsmanship just to name a few. Now there are other potential avenues to gain these things, but in my own experience, I found sports to be a leading contributor. A coach can instill these values in a young person that may not have another support structure. If you have strong parents and athletics, you are almost sure to get these experiences. A kid without strong parents and athletics may never experience or learn these things. Of course the wrong coach or parents combined with athletics can teach the wrong things as well, but by and large, athletics teaches positive characteristics that will benefit most later in life. The more people that develop these qualities as a whole, the stronger our communities and country become as a whole. The fewer, the weaker.

If fewer adults or future parents are interested in viewing a sport the more likely their children are not going to participate at young ages and possibly not ever knowing they will not have the support of their parents.

What I see is a lack of kids playing any sport without adult interference.  Kids just don't meet at the park, choose up sides and play.  It's a new day of parent interference, uniforms, and officials.  Can't play without em.  Got to have the most expensive equipment, best looking uniforms.

AAU and Travel have stunted the growth of the player mentally, making it a coaches game more than a players game.

A sad state of affairs indeed

I am beginning to think SB could get by with 2 traditional high schools and one vocational high school

The superintendent is too busy looking at his national profile and awards to do anything like consolidation.

For the moment...there are 4 high schools.  I don't see that changing for a while.

What does South Bend have in place for a youth program? Start with 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. Then lay a stronger foundation in junior high.  Try to get families to buy in at younger ages.  I don't know the answer but you have to get the community to buy in.

The biggest problem is that there is open enrollment.  So there is no actual feeder to any high school.  There are a couple of youth football leagues, but they aren't very big.

The last time South Bend had really successful teams was when they switched the junior high sport seasons.  Football was in the spring.  High school coaches were able to help out and give better instruction.

Consolidation of high schools isn't in the picture for the near future.  So we will see what happens.

  11. Interesting fact:

South Bend schools are 3-11 against non SBCSC opponents this year

The 3 wins came from Gary West, Woodlawn (2A), and Osceola Grace (non IHSAA)

Let's hope for a better finish.

I wonder is SBCSC athletics director Howard Edwards will look for a different placement of South Bend sports teams.

  12. While I agree that you have to build your program from the bottom up, there are many factors that a coach has little control.

It is much easier to have consistency in a one high school town.  All the junior high feed into your program.

In South Bend...there are 5 middle schools going to 4 high schools.  With open enrollment, any kid can go to any school in the city.  There is no way to build consistency if you don't know who you are going to have.  This leads to letting the middle school coaches do what they want.

There are some programs in multi high school towns that have had consistent success...but the are the exception rather than the rule.

  13. I doesn't seem that there are too many close games every week so I thought I would bring up another topic to spice things up.

Given that the South Bend School won't contract their high school in the near future...

Do you believe that the other schools leave the NIC or All South Bend Schools form their own conference.

    Just having a conversation

  14. The year...The South Bend Schools added that athletes grades will me monitored weekly.  Ultimately, it is up to their teachers to record their grades in a timely manner.  So some of those ineligible player could be eligible today...if the teacher puts the grades in Power School.

To become ineligible...a player must have 2 F's on their progress reports.
