    IU 2020

Don’t get all warm & fuzzy about Glass. If you’re going to give him some credit for what IU football has done this season, then you have to assign him blame for the fact that they haven’t done in the first 10 years he was AD.
  2. Well, it just occurs to me that you may have not accounted for a variable or two in your determination of causation, rendering the conclusion a little suspect.
  3. How do you know it “didn’t benefit them one bit?”
  4. Not for me to say. What I will say is I’ve known him a long time as a coach. He really cares about those kids. He gets the benefit of the doubt from me.
  5. I have my doubts. But if anyone could do it, he’s the guy.
  6. I don’t think anyone can recreate magic these days anywhere by having a tailback to give the ball to 30 times, a fullback with a butt an axe handle wide, and a willingness to run iso up the middle until the opponent’s mike wishes he had never been born. It’s a different game today.
  7. In high school, when a few teams dominate the rest, we impose barriers designed to “level the playing field.” In other sports, when you’re successful, you end up with worse draft order, in the name of competitive balance. Why can’t we do this in college football? Currently D1 programs can award up to 85 full scholarships at any one time. How about if a team wins 11+ games, they get cut to 75 for the next year? If they win 10, they only get cut to 80? And so on. I think that might work, over the long run. Change my mind.
  8. When I was starting high school at St. Ed’s in Cleveland, Dowling had just finished at our rival, St. Ignatius. His name was spoken in hushed tones. 56 years later, he still holds the Ohio high school record for career interceptions ... by 6! Carmen Cozza, the legendary Yale coach, tells a story that during the waning moments of the famous Harvard - Yale tie in 1968 — one of the greatest games in college football history — when Harvard was mounting a furious comeback, Dowling begged to be put in on defense. Cozza said he didn’t do it because he didn’t want to humiliate the kid playing safety, because Dowling hadn’t played defense all year. But, having said that, Cozza said he was 100% certain that if he had put Dowling in, he would have found a way to win the ball game. Of course, he was also an honors student, homecoming king, played pro football, etc. But his greatest claim to fame is he was used by his Yale classmate, Gary Trudeau, as the model for “BD” in the comic strip, “Doonesbury.”
  9. I remember working games when Chip played. He was always one of my favorite coaches. Very, very smart guy. But the real All American boy was a guy named Brian Dowling. Look him up sometime.
  10. Chip has been the Superintendent of the Duneland School Corp. for about a year and a half now.
  11. When he stops coaching, he’s got a great career doing voice-overs, if he wants it.
  12. Known Coach Richards for a long time. Great coach, and a better person. I hope the way he left Morton doesn’t make either of these schools shy away from him if he’s interested. Because he’s a quality coach who, with the right program, could do wonders. He’s the one that made Morton a “destination” school for football players in Hammond’s open enrollment.
  13. Oh, it’s certainly part of the problem. I didn’t say my solution was workable. Or even desirable. More of a tongue in cheek thing.
  14. Of course not! Unlike many places, a very significant chunk of all that football money finds its way into the University’s General Fund at Notre Dame, where it’s been used, among other things, to fund lots of scholarships for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Athletic Dept. does not call the shots on that stuff.
  15. I did not see a foul. I don’t consider myself an expert on the NCAA rules. But I didn’t see either contact by the defense, or reaction by the offense.
  16. So, one question worth asking is how supportive one might expect these schools’ administrations to be of the football program? Not sure what that situation is at LC. But at CP, their long time AD was a head football coach in the Duneland for many years. Until recently, their principal was their former head football coach of 13 yrs. They’re fully committed to supporting the program, as is the community.
  17. How about instead we make college football what it really was intended to be, and let the NFL do what the other major sports have had to do: create and fund their own minor league system? Right now, the colleges are just a training ground for the pros. Or, if you will, a great big combine or audition.
  18. Is there any reason for “closed conferences” other than convenience in scheduling?
  19. I will now reveal my plan to fix college football. It’s really very simple. The problem with college football is that the concept of the “student athlete” went by the wayside quite a while ago. There are places now where the football players have about as much in common with the other students as I do with Chief Justice Roberts: We’re both lawyers from Indiana, but the similarity pretty much ends there. But how can we put the “student” back in “student athlete?” It’s so simple. Make college football success include success as a student. How? Henceforth, all conference championships, post-season bowls, playoff participation, etc., will be awarded according to “College Football Rating, derived by the application of “Bobref’s Formula.” The formula is: CFR = GW x GSR. A team’s College Football Rating (CFR) is equal to the product of games won and NCAA Graduation Success Rate. For example, this season, ND has won 10 games. Their latest GSR for the football program is 97%. This gives them a College Football Rating of 9.7. By comparison, for example, Alabama’s CFR is 8.25, Clemson’s is 7.5, and Ohio State’s is a lowly 4.68, since they’ve only played 6 games. Problem solved. FTFY. No need to thank me.
  20. Is LSU still being investigated? After all they self-imposed a bowl ban for this season. 😂😆🤣😅
