As the Chicago Bears celebrated an incredible comeback win over the weekend—the team’s first playoff win in 15 years—the NFL officially has boots on the ground to scout out potential stadium sites for the franchise in Indiana.

WGN, a partner station of FOX 59/CBS4 News, confirmed Monday “with someone close to the negotiations that [NFL Commissioner] Roger Goodell was in NW Indiana touring potential sites for the new stadium.” The exact locations have not been disclosed.

“It makes it more real,” said State Rep. Earl Harris, Jr. (D-East Chicago). “I know that some people who have had doubts, some people have thought about ‘we’re just being used for leverage’—this, to me, eliminates that conversation.”

....

Indiana lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have said the move could result in transformative growth for the Northwest Indiana region.

“The conversation specifically around the Bears in Northwest Indiana needs to take place this year,” Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) said during a press conference earlier this month. “I would anticipate that conversation taking place this year.”

“You have the potential for a Super Bowl in Northwest Indiana and what that will mean in terms of economic development,” State Rep. Harris, Jr., said. “You have jobs, you have building the stadium as well as permanent jobs, and it also gives young people an opportunity that want to work in professional sports to stay in Northwest Indiana.”

According to Gov. Mike Braun (R-Indiana), preliminary steps to bring the franchise to Indiana are underway, but he remained mum on the details.

“There’s a real discussion going on to see if that happens,” Gov. Braun said during an interview Monday with Evansville’s WEHT. “Don’t want to get ahead of our skis on it, but we will do everything we can to get the Chicago Bears to move to Indiana. It’s just getting started, though, in the discussion.”

“There’s a potential for something to happen in ’26,” State Rep. Harris, Jr., said. “If that happens, that’s great, but we know that ’27 is a budget year. Might be a little easier.”

In a statement released Monday, Indiana Congressman Marlin Stutzman (R-Indiana) said:

“Indiana is excited to be considered as the potential new home for the Chicago Bears. Governor Braun & Republicans have made us one of the best states in the country for doing business and this is yet another example of opportunities they are bringing here. Hoosiers would be happy to roll out the red carpet for Bears fans and welcome their historic franchise to our great state.”

As of this article’s publication, the NFL has yet to publicly address the commissioner’s visit to Northwest Indiana.

Just say NO to a heavily taxpayer-funded NFL stadium in NW Indiana.

So what if my tax goes up a few bucks, perhaps I do not go and get a few extra treats for my belly

oh the sacrifice

Such an investment could really make a difference in an area that needs it desperately.....that is why politicians on both sides of the aisle will support.

AND there is room for it too.

HOWEVER, still very very skeptical it will even get "serious".

Despite perennial claims from team owners that building new stadiums or revamping existing ones will result in a fiscal and jobs boom for a city or region, research consistently shows that the hundreds of millions of public dollars that are often outlaid are not typically a sound investment.

“You might see a little bit of a resurgence in the area right around the stadium, but it comes at a cost to less commerce in the outlying area, which is exactly what we’d expect,” says Bradbury, who is the current president of the North American Association of Sports Economists. “This is just a transfer of wealth within the community.

I'm skeptical as well....feels like its an "option" driven to put pressure on the city of Chicago/state of Illinois.  Would love to know what opinions were shared by Goodell.

As am I.  These forays into NWI are just leverage and scare tactics aimed towards various legislative bodies in Illinois, at the local and state level.

Senate Republicans write bill to lure Chicago Bears to Indiana with stadium authority: https://www.indystar.com/story/news/politics/2026/01/15/senate-republicans-write-bill-to-lure-chicago-bills-to-indiana-with-stadium-authority/88201917007/?tbref=hp

Two top lawmakers in the Indiana Senate have authored a bill that makes the state's bid to attract the Chicago Bears more serious.

And in return, the Chicago Bears called it "a significant milestone."

Senate Bill 27, initially an empty vehicle bill waiting for a subject matter, would create a northwest Indiana stadium authority, which would have the power to acquire and finance the construction of facilities. The bill was assigned to the Senate appropriations committee on Jan. 15.

"Senate Bill 27 sets a framework as we continue discussions throughout the rest of the legislative session on the possibility of bringing the Bears to northwest Indiana," Mishawaka Republican Sen. Ryan Mishler, bill author and appropriations chair, said in a statement. Sen. Chris Garten of Charlestown, the Republican majority floor leader, is also a bill author.

Just the night before, Gov. Mike Braun gave prominence to the idea of bringing the Chicago Bears to northwest Indiana by saying in his State of the State address that the administration is "working hard" on it. Following the speech, House Speaker Todd Huston told reporters that this could be accomplished without opening the budget this year, as lawmakers are wont not to do in a non-budget year.

“The legislation presented by the State of Indiana is a significant milestone in our discussions around a potential stadium development in Chicagoland’s Northwest Indiana region," reads a statement from the team, via a spokesperson. "We appreciate the leadership and responsiveness of Governor Braun and Indiana lawmakers in advancing a framework that allows these conversations to move forward productively.”

This all started when Bears President and CFO Kevin Warren penned a surprise open letter Dec. 17 saying that the team wants to expand its search for a new stadium site to the wider Chicagoland region, including northwest Indiana. This launched a flurry of enthusiasm from community leaders and Braun.

"With our strong business environment, it’s not surprising that another organization has noticed that Indiana is open for business: the Chicago Bears," Braun said on Jan. 14.

Indiana already had some existing planning infrastructure to support this: Lawmakers passed a law last year creating a new "Northwest Indiana professional sports development commission," whose task is to figure out how to build the infrastructure necessary to attract a professional sports team ― be it football, baseball, basketball or even hockey ― to the region.

Mishler has previously acknowledged that he was in talks with Warren just after his open letter.

"I’ve had a conversation with Mr. Warren, a critical individual with a lot of Indiana ties, and I’m sure we’re going to have a lot more discussions moving forward," he said on Dec. 18.

The sports commission has also been raising money for a regional market study to position the area to attract a professional sports team.

The bill lays out all the abilities granted to the authority in relation to issuing bonds and making financial decisions to acquire land, build a stadium and enter into contracts. The authority can only issue bonds if it has a written agreement with a National Football League team that includes an at-least 35-year lease for the stadium.

The board overseeing the authority would only comprise three members: the director of the office of management and budget or a designee, the public finance director, and another member appointed by the OMB director.

*Blech* Yet another "authority' setup to steal money from Indiana taxpayer to fund a boondoggle.  They will never learn.

After all, why would we want an area in desperate need of development, developed?  Why in the world would we want employment for people?  Why would we want infrastructure improvements for the region?  Why we want to lure people to an area historically seen as not desireable?

Let's just stay the same and never invest in the future....yea...that's the ticket!!  What a visionary!! 🙄

Coach, correct me if i am mistaken, aren't the Bears funding their own stadium?  At least I thought the was the case for Arlington Heights. The stickler for Arlington Heights was that the state was also forcing all of the infrastructure costs onto the Bears as well unless I got that wrong.   Would the Bears still plan on investing the funds for the stadium in northern Indiana or does that change?

Any stadium built in NW Indiana will become an abandoned eyesore in 30-35 years.  Just like the Pontiac Silverdome was:

Abandoned - Pontiac Silverdome - YouTube

Now that site is a Amazon warehouse and fulfillment center.   Why not build something like that to begin with instead of a structure that will only be used on certain days and employ significantly more people?

Yes, that is what they are doing:   What they are asking for is infrastructure partnerships and probably what has hurt the Arlington Heights spot is the state of Illinois to give them any sort of capped property tax system in place, the current proposal from state of Illinois would make it impossible for the Bears to pay the Property Tax bc state of Illinois has not locked it in

I know about that. It's disgusting, and it's only getting worse:

When Washington, D.C., agreed to hand over billions in land and tax breaks for a new Commanders football stadium, experts thought it would long remain an outlier in sweetheart deals for sports teams.

But just months later, attention turned to Kansas, where officials in December announced plans to fund 60% of a new stadium for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. The state committed to spending up to $1.8 billion — the largest-ever professional sports subsidy.

Geoffrey Propheter, who studies stadium deals as an associate professor in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver, thought the Commanders deal would stand out for years to come “for how ludicrous it was.”

The D.C. Council in September finalized a plan to dedicate more than $1 billion in public funds to move the Commanders some 7 miles from a suburb in Maryland to a new facility planned for the old RFK Stadium site.

The city’s deal, which offers free riverfront land and exclusive development rights, means the district could forgo between $6 billion and $25 billion in revenue over time, Propheter said. By his calculations, that makes the planned Commanders stadium project the most valuable package ever awarded to a sports team. The team is primarily owned by Josh Harris, an investor with a net worth above $11 billion who also owns majority stakes in the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.

The stadium deals in Washington and Kansas — both involving relocations within the same metropolitan area — have set separate records for taxpayer subsidies to sports teams. They serve as further evidence that public officials are uninterested in curbing giveaways to billionaire team owners, despite decades of research suggesting stadiums are a wasteful use of limited tax dollars.

And the deals could further push up the public price tag for projects in Chicago, Denver and Newark, New Jersey, all of which are discussing new or upgraded venues for NFL and NHL teams.

“Kansas lawmakers have done every NFL team and every pro-subsidy lawmaker everywhere else in the country a huge favor, because now teams can look at the Kansas deal and say, ‘Hey, what we’re asking for is not nearly as bad or as crazy or stupid as what Kansas is offering,’” Propheter said. “So now we’ve just pushed the expectation upward.”

No way will the taxpayers of Kansas ever recoup that $1.8 billion dollars.  Never.

Not sure when last time you went up i65 N to my neck of the woods:   Last 3 years much like your area near Lebanon there has been MANY very large storage and distribution centers popping up from Lowell to Merrillville.   At least 2 Amazons I think maybe 3.
