I think to an extent, the 40 time is misleading. David Bell is going to be a star in the league. Yep, I am biased being a WC Alum as well. He has been underestimated a lot in his career. With that he lead his high school team to State titles in Football and Basketball, taking it right to Langford for a game winning shot to get to the championship in bball. He was also B1G freshman player of the year as well, right? He is a competitor, and has what I call game speed. His ability to catch is great as well. If he is there for the Colts, I say take him. He may even be around in the 2nd round. This is a really good group of receivers in this draft.

Not questioning David Bell at all.  I have personally seen him play a ton of football and basketball games during his WC days.  Great athlete and great young man.  I know what he did at Purdue.  So I don't question he will be a success.

The question I am raising is that having both he and Pittman would be having 2 of the same type of receivers.  They are both excellent, but I question their abilities to stretch the field and force the safeties to play deeper.  This is where we may disagree that speed matters.  Perhaps it was a bad day for his 40.  Pittman ran a 4.52 for his 40 (considerably faster than Bell) and he is not considered a field stretch type of receiver.  To ignore Bell's 4.65 40 would not be wise.

Reggie Wayne ran a 4.45 40.  And yet Harrison with a 4.38 was typically considered the deep threat.  All I am saying is that I am not sure to compare Bell to Harrison (a proven HOF guy) is a good comparison...at least yet.

Colts have a pretty darn good WR coach.....my guess is that Ballard and Reich will certainly listen to his input.  But please know I am a David Bell fan....and not saying the Colts would be wrong for drafting him.  Just hoping they can find a WR with great hands that puts fear into a secondary.

I don't know, @AGis the one who originally mentioned him. It appears  Bell is on record as saying he'd like to be drafted by the Colts. That's the link I shared.

Could have said that about Marvin Harrison. He worked out pretty well.

I did read Bell's interest.  Great character guy, playing for his home town team and catches everything that comes his way sounds awesome.

I agree there are some comparisons with Harrison in terms of hands and route running.  But they are very different physically.  Bell is much bigger than Harrison, but Harrison was timed in the 40 at 4.38 while still at Syracuse.  He could definitely stretch the field.  The 4.65 40 Bell ran at the combine does raise eyebrows, and would seem to be more of a possession receiver.  It would be great to have him, but I hope the Colts find that receiver that makes the safeties respect and play deeper.  I hope that is Campbell.....and he can stay healthy.  I like Bell a ton, but hard to compare him now to a HOF player.

    Love the stadium.

    1. What took so long?

    2. Why is it not a dome? lol

Bills are my 2nd favorite AFC team.

I was a little surprised they kept it in Orchard Park....I kept hearing downtown.  The area close to where the Sabres play by the Lake Erie waterfront is nice.

Good for them...glad this will keep the Bills at home and not in Toronto or some other city that would have absolutely paid for the team.

Missing the point, which is: whatever the reason, he can transfer and it would not be viewed the same way as an athlete entering the transfer portal .. even though the reasons may be very similar.

Not sure if he is missing the point......

Not everyone entering the transfer portal is "transferring up".  I would say most transfers are perceived lateral or even transferring down.

Not sure of this comparison.  Why didn't the smartest student in the math program enroll at MIT in the first place if their math department was so much better than any other he surveyed?

Why do student athletes enter the transfer portal today?   Probably two reasons:  playing time and coaching changes.

If I head to "Negativetown", some reasons may include:

    Path of least resistance

Inflated feelings of their own abilities

    Difficulty in accepting feedback

Work ethic - personal feeling of entitlement

Only two homes games for the Irish...our favorite venue will get little love this year (i.e. Arlington!)

Too bad the powers at be be can't make it happen where the opening game of season would be Irish vs. Center Grove (game is 10/14 this year - last game regular season again @ CG) as the season would get more hype with defending 5A/6A champions teeing off on each other!

I wonder if that might change in the future, as CG won't be playing a MIC schedule after this season. Tough game going into the post season.  Plus falling on fall break impacts attendance for CG....not sure about the Irish fall break schedule.  Classic series.

Fantastic talent, much like Percy Harvin was coming out of UF.

Appears their pro careers are aligning too.

Sadly so....I sure hope that changes in the final year of his contract with the Colts

Historically, Ballard has never spent the money available to him to make major moves. Not sure if this is directed by Irsay or not. After Jim took over, the cheapskate spending practiced by Bob Irsay ended for awhile, and boom, we went to the Super Bowl. Let's get back there.

The Colts have spent less during the off season than any other team in the AFC South recently. It's time to turn that around also if we expect to be a contender.

they really need a LT, WR and a TE.  Hope he does something.

I would really love to see Paris Campbell break out and stay healthy.  He has the speed and skill....just has to figure out a way to stay on the field.  If he could stay healthy, he could have major impact with Matty Ice.

How about job performance in the last two games.  It's been well know, long before he was a Colt, that Wentz wasn't a team player.  He can be as devout and good to his family as he should, but he had a job to do.

There is no debate about his play....although he wasn't the only one to fail the last 2 games of the season.  Especially in the Jax game...that was a total team breakdown, especially with the O Line and the entire defense.  To single out one person for those debacles is certainly biased.  The entire team had a job to do, including the coaching staff that obviously didn't have them ready to play.

I am asking you about your sources in regards to his actions in the locker room.  Do you have real sources or is this just your personal feelings?  Simple question.

The 8 man field is a little smaller. When I lived in Montana, 8 man and 6 man football was pretty popular. We recruited a lot of 8 man and 6 man players! The games were also played on Friday nights there, but doesn't necessarily mean it would be best here.  This entire thing is going to be very good if done right. I love it.

I used to get out to Wyoming (Casper area) for business and local sports page featured their 8 man HS teams.....but always 2nd fiddle to rodeo.  I thought that was really cool.

I like the Matt Ryan trade. He will actually play behind a good offensive line in Indy and I think that he has at least 2 more years left in the tank. If he doesn't, the Colts can release him next season and face zero dead cap money. His TD-INT ratio wasn't fantastic, but his completion percentage was 5% higher than Wentz. He also had 3 4th quarter comebacks and 4 game winning drives, while Wentz had zero of either. Ryan also threw 4 percent less bad passes and his on target percentage was 5% higher.

Ryan is much better than every single free agent QB and it only cost the Colts a third rounder.

Wentz is damaged goods and doesn't possess the clutch gene. He also didn't seem to be as committed as he should have been and also had possible attitude issues.

Some good insight.....Ryan is probably one of the best options out there...for short term.  He's definitely on the tail end of his career and hopefully he can rebound from declining stats last year.  But he is a short-term solution...Rivers Part II

I do hope the O line improves this year...wasn't great down the stretch and now they must replace both the LT and RG positions.  I'm a little more skeptical than you about their recent performance.

Its time to move on from Wentz.  I understand Zak Keefer wrote a negative article on his leadership and coachability in the Atlantic, but again provides no sources.  I tend to take the work of players like Leonard, Pittman, Taylor, etc. over a member of the media....a biased media from day 1.  Reich had positive words to say just yesterday, and I don't see him be blantantly dishonest.  As the quote from the Forgetting Sarah Marshall, "its like the Sopranos....its over."

Now, let hope the Colts can fill other needed position gaps.....LT, WR, TE, etc.

I don't really have an opinion on who will land in town to QB. I have opinions on who I think it should be, but the Colts aren't going to listen to me.

My opinions: Fitzpatrick and Ryan too old for long term solution. Mayfield injured, no guarantee he'll recover from torn labrum(Luck didn't). Mariota also injury prone, plus I'm not a fan of running QB's in the NFL, they just don't last. My top two are Garopollo or possibly Winston. That's about as good as the Colts can hope for unless they trade for Brady for a year.

I hear you...but its fun as a fan to speculate.

I guess my top wish would be Garoppolo.  I am not overly excited about any of the options, but it is what it is...

Looks like someone has made an offer for Jimmy G.....reported less than an hour ago

If we’re talking about marketing the game to new fans, perception is all that counts. And the DH is a small piece of the puzzle in terms of tweaking the game to appeal to a new generation of fans.

if the DH in the AL hasn't made a big difference in the past (and I supplied you plenty of data that shows it hasn't) then WHY do you think adding the DH to the NL will make a significant difference to a new generation of fans that currently don't have a baseball tradition?  As I showed you, the NL already has 7 of the 10 highest drawing venues now in MLB, based off 2021 attendance.

According to this article, MLB has the oldest fans of all major sports.  I understand trying to do something to get the attention of the 18-34 age group.

    https://frontofficesports.com/mlb-looks-to-grow-its-younger-fanbase/

    https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-sports-with-the-oldest-and-youngest-tv-audiences-2017-06-30

Major League Baseball’s television audience is among the oldest in professional sports, according to data recently released by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal and Magna Global. The average age of a baseball viewer is 57, up from 52 in 2006. There won’t be a youth movement, either, as just 7% of baseball’s audience is below age 18.

Can you provide something other than your personal desire to see expansion of the DH work when history has proven its had minimal impact?

You’re the one who posted it.

    LOL...SMH

What I did post were a couple of examples that showed their was no real statistical relationship to the DH making the game better.  a slight offensive increase. I also provided a paper (dated back to 2010) that illustrates the DH has done nothing to increase attendance in its use over time in the AL.

The DH brings a perception more than anything else.  It hasn't driven attendance in the past, but you think it may now.  OK....wish away.

What has led to the decline in MLB attendance is hardly the difference in offensive production in the NL vs the AL.  7 of the top 10 MLB teams in 2021 are NL teams....if the DH was so great to spur attendance, why aren't AL teams doing better putting fans in the stands?

    https://www.statista.com/statistics/193664/regular-season-home-attendance-of-major-league-baseball-teams-in-2010/

  15. theses from a Clemson grad student "Revisiting The Impact of the Designated Hitter on MLB"  2010.  Perhaps the data has changed since this work, but interesting read nonetheless.

    https://tigerprints.clemson.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1878&context=all_theses#:~:text=They included%3A 1.,a temporary pinch hitter 3.

The DH rule change was designed to improve attendance in the AL. When performing a regression analysis on 108 years of data, it appears that complete games pitched is more closely aligned with attendance than are batters ages or runs scored.

  16. interesting read..........this may be more about perception and the hope of something big vs reality.  But driving up attendance and viewership?  I don't think so.

    https://brandeishoot.com/2020/10/09/results-of-the-designated-hitter-rule-change-in-the-mlb/

So, for the 2020 season, there was a DH for the teams in the National League for the first time. Since there was now a DH in both leagues, you would assume a higher average batting average for the entire league. However, that is not what occurred this season. Based on the information from Baseball Reference, the average batting average for the entire league was 0.245 and teams scored 4.65 runs per game, on average. If you take a look specifically at the National League, you can see that they had an average batting average of 0.246 and only scored an average of 4.71 runs per game during this season. Both of those statistics are less than last season without the DH.

Does this mean that the DH in the National League is actually worse for teams’ offenses? Do the DH curse National League teams to have worse offensive seasons? Should the National League go back to having pitchers hit to improve batting for these teams? The answer is: maybe. In reality these statistics are a bit deceiving because of the shortened season. The previous year’s stats were measured for a full 162 games while this year only consisted of 60 games. So, in general the down year could actually improve if there were more games, considering most hitters start off really slow and get better when they play more games. Additionally, this season was full of surprises. Many players were either forced to not play or chose not to play due to restrictions because of the coronavirus pandemic, so this may have influenced batting stats.

Even though statistically overall, the addition of the DH did not accomplish the task of increasing the offense in the MLB, the entertainment level of the game likely went up. No longer did people have to sit and watch the pitcher be a “free out.” The reality of the change is that it seems like there is more chance for offense because you have someone that can actually hit in the lineup over the pitcher.

Overall, the rule change did its job. It helped keep some pitchers safe from being injured and it gave people that only watch National League baseball a taste of what it is like to have a DH hitting instead of the pitcher. People don’t really care about whether or not statistically there was an increase in offense in baseball. What people really care about is what seems to be happening. It doesn’t matter if the batting average of teams went down; now that the pitcher isn’t hitting, you have one more chance of hitting a home run in any particular inning.
