So, what is a school like IU to do?

First, they have to decide what they want to be. You can’t draw a road map without a destination. Then, they have to decide how to get there. 10, or even 5 years ago, it would have seemed an insurmountable task to get them to a spot where they can play in a bowl game every year. That takes players, and IU’s recruiting limitations have been well documented on these pages. But this is today, and there is a weapon that can allow a school like IU to compete on equal footing for recruits: NIL. it is increasingly all about the money at the player level when it comes to recruiting. Get out there and recruit donors before you recruit players. Start with Mark Cuban. Build a great big war chest of $$ and entice recruits with NIL deals. Start getting some 4 stars who could go to OSU or Penn State or Michigan, but are lured to IU by big $$. Have a couple of good years in a row, and recruiting momentum builds. It’s a difficult process, but it starts with making the decision to be competitive.

Maybe on the right track...depending which rating one believes, IU was ranked between 20-30th nationally with their 2022 class.

Taking 247, they were ranked 30th.  That is higher than Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Purdue, Northwestern, Maryland, Rutgers and Cincy.  Challenge, as usual, OSU, Michigan, Penn State, and MSU is ranked higher.  Its life in the Big 10 East.

The Big 10 East will typically result in 4 losses for IU.  They is a tough hole to crawl out of.....leaving little more room for error.

I think parents/fans getting out of hand at a youth game is an issue that should be handled at a league administrative level. In high school, it’s game management, usually an AD or assistant AD. In my experience, they are very willing to assume responsibility for addressing those matters.

I don't disagree and those are handled in that fashion.  But usually when admin gets involved, it was already an issue.  I am trying to think of ways to prevent things from getting to that level, and that is with a warning so the coach can nip it in the bud.  But thanks for your thoughts.

That is not the purpose of a sideline warning in football, and it shouldn’t be used “off label” in that fashion. A sideline warning is given when the coach is out of his designated position: either in the restricted area when the ball is dead, or behind the restraining line when it’s alive. A coach coming on to the field to argue a call is one of the specific instances of unsportsmanlike conduct by a nonplayer found in the rule book. When I was wearing the white hat, they could bark all they wanted (within reason) as long as they stayed where they were supposed to be. Crossing the sideline to complain, however, was dealt with swiftly and decisively.

Thanks Bob...great explanation.  Could you get comfortable expanding the use of sideline warning in youth football to a  coach for to help prevent parents, family and other fans from "getting out of hand" as a method to help him own accountability to deal with the issue?  As you know, there is sometimes little space between and official and Mommy/Daddy just off the sidelines constantly yelling.  Thoughts??

Center Grove = Reloading Machine as long as Eric Moore is at the helm. Passion equates to success.

But sometimes a team can go through a trial period. Although the Trojans are 28-0 over the last two seasons, they lost 16 games in the three seasons prior to that.

that statement is a tad misleading.  The season prior to the first undefeated season (2019), a very young CG team started the season off 1-4 playing a monster opening 4 games.  They went all the way to the state championship game losing by 3 points to Carmel.  3 State finals in a row.

2018 Trojans go 9-4.  Lose 3 of their first 5 games (who opens with tougher games than CG?) and advance to the semi-state losing by a TD in a close slobberknocker with Warren Central.  The same WC team that went undefeated and beat Carmel by 3 TD's the following game in the state finals.

Most teams would sell almost everything but their souls to have a "trial" period of going to a state final and semi-state.  Tough grading curve for CG.  Yes, they lost 10 games those 2 seasons....but were among the states best in 6A at the end of those seasons.

Agree that its been a bit back and forth.  But 2021 was a huge swing year in Brohms favor.  Im skeptical of Indiana' s recruiting class ranking.  Our 4Stars have been busts for the most part.  These are the most valuable players in all of college football, at any level.  At IU, they are supposed to be the teams best players.  At elite schools, 4 stars provide depth and push the 5 Stars for playing time.  Im one of those who have thrown out the 2020 results and dont consider them to be a true indicator of ones body of work.

Nothing personal intended....but people who do this for a living obviously feel differently than you about their skill and upside. (2022 recruiting class)  The past doesn't dictate this class.  At the end of the day, none of us know.

Its ridiculous to throw out 2020...following that logic, the national title game doesn't count.  You only throw it out because it supports your narrative.  As FB16 pointed out, 2019 was a solid year for IU as well.

I guess time will tell if 2019 and 2020 were outliers or if 2021 was the actual outlier.  No one can be competitive without an experienced QB and that was the issue with IU.  Now they have an excellent transfer.  I was at the Cincy game and watched IU control most of the first half until McFadden was ejected...game completely turned and IU still could have pulled it out in the end.  They need work on the O line...no doubt and other key positions.

But I do not put Purdue heads and tails above IU....one can debate and defend slightly better....but  its not like there is a huge gap.  Drop Purdue in the East division and see how they fare.....by the time the Bucket game is played, IU has been through the gauntlet.

Its been 5 years.  Brohm is winning the battle at this point.  Do you disagree?

perhaps...but its closer than you let on.  Except for last year, all of the head to head games since 2017 (their first years playing against each other) have been within a TD.

Allen won the recruiting war last year and I know how much you value recruiting rankings

I think sometimes you look at a short stack of data to make major conclusions.  Let's see how this season goes.  Neither have set the world on fire.

NIL is going to start keeping players in college longer. A non-guaranteed first rd pick has the ability to make more in college than they potentially do in the G-League. The one and done rule has nothing to with the NCAA and is strictly on the NBA, players should be allowed to go professional straight from high school, it would alleviate part of that problem.

I agree 100% on both points.  (staying in school longer due to $$ making ability and high schoolers going directly to the NBA if talented enough)

It feels to me that the college game is becoming more and more like a minor league system....

Im happy for the kid.  But I can also be against the deceptive misinformation that is allowed to circulate This is one of the more egregious variance to reality that I can recall seeing for an ultra high level recruit.

Every school a kid visits measures them....no school was deceived.  OSU and every other school offering understand what they would be getting.

I dont see this as a negative.  Its just a fact.  He did not come up thru the bantam-peewee-junior high system like 99% of the CG kids do.  No harm no foul.  Just a fact.

ok...just wasn't sure where you were going.  Kids move into areas all the time.  Russ wasn't the first, won't be the last to move into CG.  CG has also lost a number of pretty good young football players that also move out of the area.  Remember former NFL center Nick Hardwick that graduated from Lawrence North? Guessing pretty much most areas experience the same.

Id be more concerned about his actual height, which is absolutely critical at his position.  There is a BIG difference between 6-2.5 and 6-5., especially when you are pass rushing against 6-7 offensive guards and tackles.

If he is closer to 6.2.5, dont be surprised to see him moved to LB.

Ohio State is listing him at 6'3" on their official roster.

I believe Yeast was a one year transfer into CG.  Not really a product of the system.

People move into areas all the time.  Not sure why that is seen as a negative.  Russ' Dad Craig, former NFL player himself, moved into the area when he took over as offensive coordinator at Franklin College.  I am sure he received some direction as to the best place for Russ and his sister, who is currently a standout in track at the University of Louisville for education and athletics.

Whether Russ grew up in CG or not, he sure understood the offense, (and D when he played that side of the ball)  Not living in an area one's entire life doesn't diminish anything and Russ will hardly be the last to move into a given area later in his high school career.

Im tired of all the "LEO" BS.

We got our butts kicked all over the field last year and 2020 was a pandemic fluke.  The reason we have so many injuries is do to the fact that the roster is filled with sub par athletes who cant take the pounding of BT football.

Allen's pixie dust has run dry.  Indiana football's only hope is that the BT scraps its divisions and goes to an 8 game conference schedule, which is being discussed.  The conference wants to create a BT-PAC12-ACC Alliance to offset the SECs addition of OU and TEX.  The quicker IU can get away from OSU/PSU/UM the better.  Then we will pick up games like NC State, Oregon State, Arizona, Boston College, etc.

Didn't IU have the 4th ranked recruiting class in the Big 10 earlier this year?  20th nationally?

https://www.idsnews.com/article/2021/12/indiana-football-2022-recruiting-class-national-signing-day#:~:text=Indiana's class of 2022 is,20 nationally.&text=Indiana football signed its 2022 recruiting class Wednesday on National Signing Day.

That may have changed given the exodus of the running back from Cincy to ND, but pretty darn good for IU.  As FB16 indicated, some excellent players via the transfer portal.

I do agree...its unfortunate IU plays in the Big 10 East.....I hope they shake up this conference alignment someday.  That is 2nd only to the SEC West in terms of tough competition.  I also agree with your comments about Schiano and Rutgers....greatly improved.

Warren Central and Ben Davis have much larger national reputations in football than either Carmel or Center Grove.  BD has been building their rep since the early 90s and the mid 2000s Warren teams were considered the states all time best run of excellence.  Neither CA or CG have approached either of the Big Two from a NATIONAL perspective.

??  The last 2 years of national rankings might just say different with CG gaining top 10 season ending rankings in all 3 national high school ranking groups.  The MIC big 4 have frequently been ranked in the top 100 nationally.

No argument of BD and WC's dominance in the 90's and mid 2000's respectively.  Saw both teams play a ton then.  But that was then....and not sure how much weight that carries today.  The reason for the constant high rankings of the MIC conference nationally is due to more than those 2 teams.

I understand Hoosier FBs point.  temptation has taken every opportunity to call out CG/CA victories over the MIC 6 since the divorce between the two, as if it somehow cements someones point of view or personal agenda.  It is what it it.  CA/CG are beating the MIC 6 in the country club sports and also taking them down in the pure athletic events.  We dont need to be reminded of this every time CG beats Warren Central 15-0 in baseball.  Is that outcome a surprise to anyone?  I dont think so.  CG and CA are moving forward with class and dignity.  temptation is the only one gloating on behalf of the two.  Just ignore it.

I understand one making that point. The “bashing of communities” and making it personal to individuals took this to another level, in my opinion.

I absolutely agree that it’s time to move on.

Who are you attempting to bash at this point?  The kids?  The adults?  Neither one is a good look and is a low blow, even for someone such as yourself. That’s what this has turned into, you making fun of the MIC. I am a former teacher of a MIC school and have a kid who graduated from Carmel. I can assure you that we hold no animosity and understand the need for the move in sports that are not generating revenue.

The kids in these communities are killing each other daily, fighting to have a good home life with some not sure where their next meal might come from and you’re worried about LOGOS ON A TROPHY???? These teachers, for many of the students, are the adult figures in their lives and if you taught at an inner city school as you say you do, you wouldn’t be bashing these communities.  One athletic director just buried his two grandchildren and again, you are worried about LOGOS ON A TROPHY????? I thought my disgust for you couldn’t get any worse but I was wrong.

My son won a state title at Carmel and as proud as I am of him, none of that compares to the real problems facing these communities. Your comments are pathetic. Good for Carmel and CG on having outstanding athletic programs. Good for both schools who manage to get their kids to school on time, get good grades, have supportive parents with money to get them the tools to succeed. Go spend a day in the lives of a child who’s parents either don’t exist, or only have one parent working three jobs to make ends meet and have teachers who have to buy coats for their students just to keep them warm in the winter and then maybe you’ll understand your comments are unneeded and unwanted.

I guarantee you that you wouldn’t run your mouth in front of anyone from these communities.  No, you need a keyboard to spew off your hatred.

How is that for a hot take?

I must have missed where he in any way bashed any community or the people in them. Can you show that to me, or is this simply an example of what social media has become?

My interpretation of his remarks was direction to administration and not communities nor the people in them.  His point was that administration in the MIC schools kicked Carmel and CG out due to feeling betrayed and also as a result of tilted competitive results.  You or anyone may disagree with his position, but to twist the meaning as to him attacking communities and people are unfortunate and in my opinion, a tad disingenuous.  Now, if you can show me comments where he attacked people in MIC communities, I will re-evaluate my thoughts as to your message intent.

I love the MIC and hate that this change happened.  I will remain a fan and that comes with watching kids compete against each other for many years.  While I agree that revenue was a major reason Carmel and CG started looking for another conference alternative, it was hardly the only reason.

Thank you for years of being a teacher and obviously committed to the community in which you educated others.  I appreciate your passion and understand to a degree your defensiveness.  But for what its worth, I think you also jumped on the opportunity to make this more personal that what was warranted.

Its no surprise to anyone that Carmel and CG beat up on The MIC in golf, tennis, baseball, softball.  Its quite expected as these sports exacerbate the huge socio economic disparities between these competing communities.

What is shocking is Center Grove's dominance on the track, and especially in the sprint and relay events.  We've all heard the phrase, "you cant teach speed."  That simply is not true at CG.  In my view, this is the single greatest accomplishment of the Eric Moore Era at Center Grove, which has been his ability to catch and pass the MIC urban schools by beating them at their own naturally gifted game, which is flat out runners speed.

Eric and his staff are amazing track coaches.  Eric runs the CG Power Club where they properly teach speed and lifting techniques (not lifting weights) beginning at the elementary age for all athletes, boys and girls.  It pays off huge dividends as they learn young so when they get to high school, they are ready and aligned.  There have been a number of CG kids go on and have very good track and field careers at the collegiate level, with most of the boys also playing football.

Marty Mills is the CG strength coach and he is second to none.  It all fits together.

When it is all said and done, Eric Moore should be a HOF coach in both football and track. CG is beyond blessed to land Eric a couple of decades ago and his biggest attribute to coaching goes way beyond teaching a sport.
