There are so many factors that impact these programs, it is too easy to say a coach was not qualified. It is also unfair to connect the two programs. Mike Brevard did a great job at North Side. He moved on to St. Francis, something he had wanted to do; so it's hard to find fault there. If you are talking about the new hire, then it really is unfair to make the claim. I think Norfleet was a good coach as well. He sure had his kids ready to play us this year. Looking at the record as the sole measure of success in a program is not enough in programs like these; there are other programs in the area that are in the same boat.

My own thoughts are that the NAIA is mainly focused as an association on football and basketball, even though there are only something like 90 football programs in the association. As far as a competition level, it is tough to gauge. I would typically say NAIA is on a level of DII. It is hard to gauge that though, because there is only one DII team in the State, UIndy. When Marian was first getting the program off the ground, they were REALLY good. I forget what year it was but they throttled UIndy. I believe that was the only season, or at least the last season they played. I put NAIA ball on that level simply because they can offer scholarships, where DIII cannot....at least specifically for athletics. The top DIII programs seem to have ways to get money for athletes though. All that said, I don’t think the NAIA would compete well with the top DIII programs in the country. Programs like Wisconsin Whitewater and Mount Union could compete well in DII. So the lines may be a bit blurred at the top on those levels. I also think UIndy has improved enough over recent years that they would compete well with a team like Marian and St. Francis. It is interesting to IWU progress in NAIA. They should have beat St. Francis last year, and it’s my understanding that IWU is a non scholarship program, or at least don’t have the numbers like St. Francis and Marian do for offering kids. Taylor seemed to be a program on the rise, but I believe they went non scholarship as well. That tends to slow the progress. As far as academics, I am not sure one could say one segment holds the high ground. It is strictly a school by school thing. St. Francis has several tracks for becoming a teacher, and has a solid nursing program as well. I know Marian has a good school of education, but I am not familiar with other programs.

It will be interesting to see the coaching moves now that the season is over. There is some talk of Arians stepping down (He ain't the healthiest dude around) and Todd Bowles stepping into the head coach spot. Looking at Bowles resume', it is impressive. Even with the Jets, likely the worst run organization in the league, he got them to win 10 games his first year. He has certainly paid his dues, and deserves another shot. I think Leftwich stays put. This is only his second year as a coordinator. As far as KC goes, the only name that came up was Bienemy. he must not be good at interviews, or maybe he just wants to stay put? Their DC, Spagnuolo seems to be the type that is a solid coordinator, but not a head coach. No other names really stand out from either staff, off the top of my head any way.

So, no discussion of a QB from the era where the QB was fair game? Winning 4 Super Bowls in said era? Just asking for discussion purposes....difficult to compare eras, BUT Montana playing in this era? No spy gate issues, tuck rule, deflate gate, etc? Compared to TB playing in that era? What Brady has accomplished is incredible, and he very well may be considered the goat. Honestly, the 9ers of that era and this Tampa team were very similar as far as the way Tampa played in this game.

I agree...the conflict between Brady and the coaches was noticeable early in the season. When they finally turned Brady loose, it was clear he was in control of the offense.

Interesting stat:

So defensive holding is a thing? Huh While KC is not helping themselves, that last drive was the league’s going away gift to Brady. Exactly like the end of the first half in Green Bay. Sorry, but as great as Brady actually is, things like this bug me.

As with most of your posts on this topic, there really is no point......just let it go. It was Dullaghan who pushed for those things; if it were any other coach, they don't get the full support like that. Not sure what you are not getting here, or why you don't just stop.

Correct...I may have forgotten a LOT of things over the years, but my senior season ain't one of em. :)

The regular season was still 10 games in 84. There were just 4 playoff games then as well. Our sectional game was against Washington, Regional was against North Central, Semi State was against Martinsville, and we played Hobart for the State Championship.

That was a regular season game though. It was my senior year, and was the last game of the season.

I have a frozen Malnati's pizza in the freezer, since there is no restaurant nearby. I will throw that in the oven. I'd be in heaven if I had some of their bruschetta for a warm up.

There may be a few communities where basketball gets the support, but one thing we learned from this football season; football drives the budgets of many more schools, AND the budget of the IHSAA. The IHSAA could afford to cut off the basketball tournament last season, BUT the football season had to happen, or there would have been a high number of schools in trouble financially. Even though crowds were limited at football games, they still drive the budget. So, while the sentimental game may be basketball, the one that pays the bills is football.

Our head coach and Dullaghan were NOT friends at all. We were only ranked 3rd or 4th going into that game.....the ONLY time I ever heard Coach Stauffer come close to swearing.......we are going to prove to everyone we are the best damn team in the State. Final score was WC 61 BD 8.....and we did not let up.

I was a student at IUPUI, and he was a guest speaker in one of my classes. He could have gone on for hours. It was a great class. He did mention that when he met with the Principal, AD and Superintendent, they asked what he needed. He said we need to go visit Chuck Stephens at Franklin Central. They had recently been a State champion 3 years in a row. They looked at the weight room, and saw that he was actually teaching a class and DD looked at his administrators and said THAT is what we need. They did not even blink and said done. The rest is history. And his fee for that day? A large bag of popcorn from the concession stand at the Natatorium. To this day, he goes out of his way to say hello, and ask how I am doing....and I was a senior at WC his first year and BD. I can only imagine how well he treats people he likes. 😃

lol...ok, but your original point was about Dullaghan...he had moved on before that point as well, to Purdue and West Point. He came to BD for the 84 season. Really not sure why you continue to reply; your original point is long lost.

????? Ok, they were still in a conference, but every team was put into a cluster with a few teams; Conferences were not a consideration when the clusters were put together. If you won your cluster, you went to the playoffs in 83 and 84. Not sure what your point is, or even what you are attempting with the post; but seriously, let it go. Your point was not a good one; and yet you dig in even further.

Ok...so that MAY account for HALF the schedule. And your original point, as weak as it was, was based on qualifying for the playoffs. That ended prior to the 1985 season. Add to that they were put in a cluster in 1983 and 1984....not really under their control what cluster they were in. AND, My focus was the OUT of conference schedule. Probably should have quit while you were behind though.

I would not say they "packed their schedule" with clods. Part of the point system was strength of schedule. It was tougher to qualify in 3A, because you could not really play up. You had to either go undefeated, or maybe lose 1 game a year to qualify for the playoffs. Their out of conference schedule still had them playing teams like Warren Central, North Central, and Chatard; all solid teams back then.

Rams gave up too much. While this is an upgrade from Goff, no first round picks for 3 season? Your o line AND d line need help now as well, and the run game was ok. This could work out well for the Lions....hopefully not too well.
