No need to clarify. I understood exactly what you were saying. And to me, that still is not a common sense approach. Again, for all the scenarios I mentioned above, the ONLY names that you would not acknowledge are those of transgender students? Not a realistic plan either, honestly. So the teacher does not want to follow a district guideline, so the principal will? I also only see the whining on one side of the issue. The question is.....is this the hill you want to die on? There is no religious tenet on the face of this earth that would prohibit an individual from calling someone by a name they would prefer to be called. Common sense would dictate calling a student by a name they would prefer to be called. If TJ’s name on his record is Thomas, but has gone by TJ, who are you or I to stick to calling him Thomas? Are you going to call any student that goes by Mike, Michael? Treating someone different because of some loosely held “religious” belief is just childish and ridiculous.

And I explained previously why that is lacking common sense. And that thinking would have still violated the policy Brownsburg schools has in place.

Your first comment was to stick to what was on the registration. I cited several examples where the name on the registration may not be the name a person goes by. I would say that the teacher at Brownsburg made a decision to stick to the name on the registration, for certain student(s) only, of course. So the adherence to the name on the registration is not really the simplest way to avoid any problems. Common sense would say live and let live, right? Or is it to let your personal religious views override that?

I agree that it could have easily been avoided, but your comment here contradicts the one I replied to above.

So if a kid wants to be called Mike or Bob, stick to Michael or Robert no matter what? I had a student last year with a foreign name. His friends called him Steve though...have for years. So, go against that? Had another student who was a 3rd ( gpa was senior, dad was junior). The common name they had been called going back to gpa was Bob. That name is not on the record. If the students wants to go by Bob, and I refuse, it creates more problems than it is worth. I have had multiple transgender students the last few years; great kids as well, and solid students. It is no issue for me to call them by the name they want. Again, I am not willing to insert my personal beliefs where they do not belong. As far as this case goes, the teacher was even told by his association and the ISTA legal rep that he had no leg to stand on in this case.

No, it’s about respecting all students in the room, and putting them before personal beliefs and opinions. The teacher is wrong here in his actions. As others would say, don’t like the rules? Move on. This is no different than a teacher talking politics and picking a side in front of students. Allowing students to make their own decisions is more important than what a given teacher believes is right or wrong. I have a handful of students each semester that go by something other than the name I see on my roster. If I truly want all my students to succeed, they need to know I have their best interests at heart. If I choose the name to call them by, especially against their wishes, then that relationship is fractured. There is no skin off my back as a teacher to call a kid by a name he or she chooses to be called.

That does not really address the question though. If it is a completely private institution, then yes, they have their rules. The crux of the issue for me is should this system be allowed to take tax dollars AND use a discriminatory hiring process? In my mind, one of them has to give. They should not have it both ways. If this were a public school, it would be illegal to fire this person. The money that the Catholic schools gets comes from the same source as public schools. Should they have to play by the exact same rules?

A more accurate count has the total taxpayer funding of the ArchIndy schools at $38.6 Million. The total for the last 3 years is $110 Million. So, the question again is, should a system that is allowed to discriminate for religious reasons be able to continue taking taxpayer money?

One other thought on this witch hunt; The strict interpretation of this mindset is that he also has to exclude non Catholics from working in these schools as well. After all, living the Catholic faith includes the obligation of attending Mass every Sunday and receiving Holy Communion.

Cathedral received $1.14 Million in tax dollars this past school year. Roncalli received $1.75 Million. Should schools that discriminate continue to receive tax dollars? I did some checking as well. I looked at the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. I am sure I missed a few, but the schools I did count, add up to over $30.5 Million in tax dollars. These schools and more are all subordinate to the Archbishop, and since Cathedral has chosen that route as well, I included them.

It has been for many years now. They also have a healthy Jewish population.
