That makes it even more unsportsmanlike if they threw the ball in the 3rd quarter. I could see on one had that you'd like to give your second stringer an opportunity to throw the ball in the state game, but damn. As a coach, I'm probably setting an example for the second stringer by telling him that were running out the clock. Call some QB runs if you want him to do more than just hand off the ball.

It doesn't diminish my view of the great program that Ben Davis has built. But I could see how it might piss off a Penn fan.

They scored 14 in the second half. That's it.

    Saturday semi-states at neutral sites.

Either that or just do away with this PHD degree needing level of trying to figure out where the heck you're going to playing the next game.

"Home team is the Regional non-host but only if the team came from an even Sectional and played a team that started with the letter B and led after the first quarter but not if they hosted the Regional six years ago...blah blah..."

I can see why a fully seeded state tournament would be popular, especially amongst the Indy donut coaches.  I agree 6A would be the perfect place to do it.  It only works if there is some sort of geographic restrictions.

WC's Mike Kirschner has long advocated for a 1-32 seeding in the 6A tournament by the Sagarins. Home team is the higher seed.

Then Penn gets thumped by Ben Davis in state, the two head coaches are supposedly friends. We sit here and throw out words like professionalism, from my understanding, is the kids play the game, if our own coaches wont call of the dogs on our own state rivals, why should we expect and outsider to do so?

I don't think Ben Davis, Warren or Carmel have ever suffered embarrassment like that, but maybe they should.

It was 49-7 at the half in that game against Penn. If BD had left in Reese and the rest of the guys, it would have been MUCH worse. Should the Giants have benched everyone in the second quarter? I mean it was 28-7 after one. I mean, what do you want them to do? That team was one of the best ALL TIME in Indiana. Same for the Warren teams under Kevin Wright and Steve Tutsie that embarrassed everyone (including Ben Davis, 76-7, in '06).

As the 76-7 game and BD football history pre-1977 shows, the Giants have taken plenty of embarrassments...some fairly recently. The 2018 season wasn't fun at all.

  5. It's my understanding that the previous BD HC, Jason Simmons, has a relationship with someone on the IMG staff. I believe that's what got the ball rolling. Listen, I don't know what's going to happen that night or if Ben Davis has any shot, but I think it speaks well for the program and for Indiana High School Football that IMG wanted to come and play here. I also know there has been tremendous interest in the game from not only BD folks. If the Giants get shellacked, it will be what many expect. If they are competitive, it will really show the team where they are against one of the country's best.

  6. Ron Sexton (aka Donnie Baker, Floyd the Trucker, Kenny Tarmac and so many others) was so amazingly talented. I met him early in my teaching career when I was the GM of WRFT at Franklin Central. He was a big time believer in the power of high school radio, which gave him his start. Many also don't realize that he was a talented sports anchor back in the Mark Patrick days at WISH-TV in Indy. He served on IHSAA broadcasts as well when WNDY had the rights to the state tourney.

To say I knew him well would be an overstatement, but enough people who I know have nothing but high praise for him as a man. He'll be missed. Linked is one of my favorite Bob & Tom bits where two of Ron's characters met up in the Ronaverse. That guy was so talented. The degree of difficulty of this as a voice actor is ridiculous.

Agree on Patterson and splitting hairs but I just don’t think that you can replace guys like Mickens on D and Jackson on O and not skip a beat.

Luter and Duff are the real deal though.

I really think BD is the MIC favorite and Warren, LC and LN are neck and neck (and neck) for that runner up spot.

I mean, it's one spot different. It's not like five spots.

Did a weekly installment of this last fall at it generated discussion and received solid feedback so I’m gonna give it a go again in 2023.

Here’s how I see the state’s top 25, regardless of class, heading into the opening week.

Admittedly, my knowledge of central Indiana (my backyard) is better than other areas but I did some homework and even picked the brains of some GID members for which I am grateful.

Once the season starts, I’ll post these every weekend after surfing game results.

I’ll keep 50 teams in my database (25 honorable mention) weekly but will await week 1 results before doing so.

    Critique away!

    1. Center Grove
    2. Cathedral
    3. Ben Davis
    4. Hamilton Southeastern
    5. Brownsburg
    6. Carmel
    7. Westfield
    8. Warren Central
    9. Carroll (Fort Wayne)
    10. Fishers
    11. Valparaiso
    12. East Central
    13. Lawrence North
    14. Lawrence Central

Any reason for LN over LC? LC has a lot coming back. Will Patterson has done a phenomenal job there.

I know!  We are just restless up here.  The long term fans of the program remember what we were, and right now it is hard to watch us struggle with local teams.  I miss the days of slug fest games with Ben Davis.  Hell, I miss us getting handled by you.  It woke us up to the level we would need to be at, to compete.  Those days are long long gone.

I miss the BD/Penn rivalry. I know it was one sided in results, but those games were always close. A few plays here and there, it's an even series.
